OUR HISTORY

Rhinelander was born in the boom days of logging. Settled in 1880, at the confluence of the Wisconsin and Pelican Rivers, it was first called Pelican Rapids. It was granted a charter two years later and named after F.W. Rhinelander of New York. Rhinelander was president of the Milwaukee, Lake Shore and Western Railroad. Grateful residents renamed their community in his honor after the railroad agreed to come to town.

The Rhinelander Area is famous for its connection with the logging industry and the lumber boom of the 19th century. Located in premier area for timber, Rhinelander was one of the most important logging centers in the Northwoods. The community has evolved to embrace a number of thriving business sectors, including medical, papermaking, packaging, defense contractors and national research facilities.

HISTORICAL LOCATIONS OF INTEREST

Pioneer Park Historical Complex

The free admission and must see Pioneer Park Historical Complex includes: Logging Museum, Antique Saw Mill, CCC Barracks, One Room Schoolhouse, Fire Museum, Restored Soo Line Depot and Antique Outboard Motor and Boating Museum.

Oneida County Courthouse

While the first Courthouse was built in 1887, the current Oneida County Courthouse was constructed in 1908 and features a beautiful Tiffany-style glass dome. Brand new –go on the free self-guided historical walking tour during regular week day hours.

Rhinelander Historical Museum

Tour the little yellow house with a blue peak at 9 S. Pelham Street for free. It is a time capsule full of items from when Rhinelander was a bustling logging town. It reflects the elements of family life found in Rhinelander from around the turn of the century.

A Community with Historical Football Ties

Namesake of the College Football Heisman trophy, John Heisman, is buried in the Forest Home Cemetery. The Rhinelander/Oneida County Airport includes a display of Green Bay Packers memorabilia including, Packers jerseys, helmets, footballs, and even super bowl rings, from the entire length of the team’s history.

The Hodag Legend

WHAT IS A HODAG?

Some say the Hodag is the fiercest, strangest, most terrifying monster ever to set razor-sharp claws on this earth. Others describe the Hodag as a reclusive woodland creature, misunderstood by many and only wanting to be left alone in the woodland paradise that is the Rhinelander Area. No one really knows for certain, but for the people of Hodag Country, he’s as real as the towering pines and the crystal clear lakes that cover the area.

HISTORY OF THE HODAG

While it’s hard to put a finger on the exact nature of the actual Hodag, we do have a very accurate history of the legends surrounding the fabled beast. In 1893, Rhinelander pioneer and timber cruiser Eugene “Gene” Shepard claimed to have snapped

a picture of a ferocious creature just before the beast sprang on him from a white pine log. The camera caught the most horrible sight: a hairy animal seven feet long and thirty inches tall, with white horns, menacing tusks, vise-like jaws and sharp claws.

Not surprisingly, Shepard later admitted that the Hodag was something of a hoax, and that the beast in the photograph was really just made of wood and ox hides, bull horns and steel. But for Rhinelander residents, the Hodag is no hoax.

The Hodag has become a local legend and the symbol of the City. Parks, plaques, schools and businesses bear the Hodag name and image. And rumors of Hodag pranks, sightings and other close encounters circulate to this day. When something out of the ordinary occurs in Hodag Country, you’ll hear people say, “I think it was a Hodag.”

HODAG STATUE

A larger-than-life representation of the fierce creature can be found outside the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce office at 450 W. Kemp Street. Snap a picture with your whole group, using the new selfie post.

PAINTED HODAG STATUES

Hodags come in many sizes and they like to try to camouflage themselves by wearing various disguises. Thanks to Downtown Rhinelander Inc.’s Hodags on Parade initiative there are many hand painted statues located at different businesses and locations around Rhinelander. If you would like to go Hodag hunting – stop by the Rhinelander Chamber to pick up a map!

HODAG HERITAGE FESTIVAL

Whether you’re talking about the Rhinelander, WI High School mascot, the huge statue greeting visitors, or the cryptid legend... the Hodag is Rhinelander’s. Find your favorite version at the annual Hodag Heritage Festival! Hear all about the Hodag themed events on Facebook at @HodagHeritage.

Live the Legend Outdoors

HOLMBOE NATURE PRESERVE

Enjoy peace and solitude on your walk through this beautiful, oldgrowth forest. Although the trail is less than a mile, it is one of the most beautiful places in the area to take a nature hike. The preserve features hemlock, giant red pines and white pines, white cedar and black spruce swamp all along the scenic Pelican River. This hidden gem is tucked back off of Boyce Drive.

HODAG PARK

Hodag Park is a large park stretching along the shore of Boom Lake. It is home to the annual July Fourth fireworks celebration, three baseball diamonds, a public beach and a large boat landing. There is also a tennis court and play area for kids, along with several pavilions

that can be reserved for private events. This is a very popular park for picnickers and walkers due to its location along the waterway and is a great spot to watch the sunset. The Hodage Park Stage – the all new stage area for special events, concerts and more!

WASHBURN SILENT SPORTS TRAILS

The Washburn Silent Sports trails are located 7 miles west of Rhinelander. The Washburn Mountain Bike Trail offers approximately 5.0 miles of double-track trail for novice to intermediate skilled mountain bikers, and 6.0 miles of single-track trail designed to provide an extreme experience for mountain bikers possessing an advanced skill set. There are also cross country ski, hiking and snowshoe trails, and a warming shelter.

NORTHWOODS CROSS COUNTRY SKI TRAILS

Located just off of Highway 8, Northwood trails are a complete recreational system for both classic and skate techniques. With over 15 km, Northwood trails begin at Northwood Golf course, but they quickly move off the course into a pristine forest setting. While skiing Northwood trails, enjoy the local landmarks along the way, Ring Wayne’s Bell at the top of Shutes - n - Ladders. Then ski Cook’s Run to Judy’s Bench and enjoy the view of the Heal Creek lowlands.

ALMON COUNTY PARK & TRAIL

Almon Park is located approximately 5 miles south of Rhinelander on Buck Lake. This 160 acre park consists of a swimming beach, picnic areas and shelters, nature trails and an 18 hole disc golf course. The nature trails are open for hiking, skiing and snowshoeing and wind through old age mixed hardwoods, a northern bog with a boardwalk, and a lakeshore trail.

BOOM LAKE

Boom Lake sits on the north side of Rhinelander, offering great opportunities for fishing, boating and swimming. Boom Lake is actually a flowage of the Wisconsin River and spans more than 365 acres, providing lots of space for fun on the water.

AREA PARKS

Rhinelander offers a number of parks and other recreational facilities. Aside from Hodag Park and Pioneer Park, Rhinelander is also home to Sarocka Field, a small neighborhood park with a large grassy area, a playground for kids and a large sledding hill in winter. For your furry friends - the dog park is located at Shepard Park on Boyce Drive. The city is also home to a BMX Bike track at the West Side Park.

ATHLETICS

Does your team travel for sporting events? Rhinelander has outstanding athletic facilities including the Hodag Dome and the Rhinelander Ice Arena. The Hodag Dome is the largest air-supported high school dome in the nation and offers 128,000+ square feet for a variety of athletic and community activities. The Rhinelander Ice Arena offers a full-size NHL 85x200 foot hockey rink and is home to numerous tournaments throughout the winter season, as well as additional ice related functions.

ATVING

City road routes are open and can get you to trail systems like the Enterprise Trail System, located south of Rhinelander. The Enterprise trails run for 10 miles and links to Langlade and Lincoln County trails.

FISHING

Whether you are hoping to catch bluegill, perch, crappie, small or large mouth bass, walleye, northern pike or musky our lakes and rivers have it all! Rhinelander is also the “Ice Fishing Capital of the World”, so grab those tip-ups and hit our lakes year round. Check out a local guide service if you are looking to take your fishing experience to the next level.

GOLFING

The Rhinelander Area is one of the most scenic spots in the state for your next round of golf. Here you’ll find highly-rated courses tucked among towering maples, pines and oaks. With several area golf courses, each course will offer you and your group a unique golfing experience.

HUNTING

The Rhinelander Area is a fantastic hunting destination. Ruffed grouse hunting in Hodag Country is second to none. White tailed deer hunting is excellent as well, with a good number of bucks taken in both the bow and gun seasons.

Recreation & Sports

SILENT SPORTS TRAILS

Our silent sports trails are always expanding. There are more than a dozen trails within 15 minutes of Rhinelander offering a trail for every skill level. You’ll find a number of biking opportunities in Hodag Country. Mountain bikers and road cyclists alike will enjoy bicycling in and around the Rhinelander Area.

Cross country ski or snowshoe miles of well-groomed trails running through the beautiful forests. Trek through the snow-covered pines or glide along tamarack bogs and groves of hemlocks.

SNOWMOBILING

The Rhinelander area is the perfect hub for exploring snowmobile trails across the northwoods. More than 1,000 miles of snowmobile

trails run throughout the Rhinelander area. These snowmobile trails link to thousands more miles of trails running throughout Northern Wisconsin and into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

WATER FUN

With more than 1,100 lakes in the county, the words water and Rhinelander go hand in hand. If you are looking for a scenic paddle down the river, the Wisconsin or Pelican rivers will have a route for you. If you want to spend a day on the water boating, jet skiing or water skiing, there is surely a lake for you.
