Located in Oneida County – the heart of the Northwoods of Wisconsin – Rhinelander has a population of around 7,700, and it stands as the retail hub of northern Wisconsin and upper Michigan. Our Famous
Hodag
What is a Hodag? Some say the Hodag is the fiercest, strangest, most terrifying monster ever to set razor-sharp claws on this earth. Others describe the Hodag as a reclusive woodland creature, misunderstood by many and only wanting to be left alone in the woodland paradise that is the Rhinelander Area. No one really knows for certain, but for the people of Hodag Country, he’s as real as the towering pines and the crystal clear lakes that encompass the area.
History of the Hodag
Hodag
While it’s hard to put a finger on the exact nature of the actual Hodag, we do have a very accurate history of the legends surrounding the fabled beast. In 1896, Rhinelander pioneer and timber cruiser Eugene “Gene” Shepard claimed to have snapped a picture of a ferocious monster just before the beast sprang on him from a white pine log. The camera caught the most horrible sight: a hairy animal seven feet long and thirty inches tall, with white horns, menacing tusks, vise-like jaws, and sharp claws. Not surprisingly, Shepard later admitted that the Hodag was something of a hoax, and that the beast in the photograph was really just made of wood and ox hides, bull horns and steel. But for Rhinelander residents, the Hodag is no hoax.

The Hodag has become a local legend and the symbol of the City. Parks, plaques, schools, and businesses bear the Hodag name and image. And rumors of Hodag pranks, sightings, and other close encounters circulate to this day. When something out of the ordinary occurs in Hodag Country, you’ll hear people say, “I think it was a Hodag.”
Hodag Statues A larger-than-life representation of the fierce beast can be found outside the Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce office at 450 W. Kemp Street.
Painted Hodag Statues Hodags come in many sizes, and they like to try to camouflage themselves by wearing various disguises. Thanks to Downtown Rhinelander Inc.’s Hodags on Parade initiative, there are many hand-painted statues located at different businesses and locations around Rhinelander. If you would like to go Hodag hunting, stop by the Rhinelander Chamber to pick up a map!

Historical Locations of Interest
Pioneer Park Historical Complex The free admission and must-see Pioneer Park Historical Complex includes: Logging Museum, Antique Saw Mill, CCC Barracks, One Room Schoolhouse, Fire Museum, Restored Soo Line Depot, and Antique Outboard Motor and Boating Museum. Rhinelander City Hall City Hall was constructed in 1908 by Ashland Architect, Henry Wildhagen. Oneida County Courthouse While the first Courthouse was built in 1887, the current Oneida County Courthouse was constructed in 1908 and features a beautiful Tiffany Glass Dome.
The Rhinelander Area is famous for its connection with the logging industry and the lumber boom of the 19th century. Located in premier area for timber, Rhinelander was one of the most important logging centers in the Northwoods. The community has evolved to embrace a number of thriving business sectors, including medical, paper-making, packaging, defense contractors, and national research facilities.
HISTORY
Rhinelander was born in the boom days of logging. Settled in 1880, at the confluence of the Wisconsin and Pelican rivers, it was first called Pelican Rapids. It was granted a charter two years later and named after F.W. Rhinelander of New York. Rhinelander was president of the Milwaukee, Lake Shore and Western Railroad. Grateful residents renamed their community in his honor after the railroad agreed to come to town.
Rhinelander Historical Museum The little yellow house with a blue peak at 9 S. Pelham Street is a time capsule full of items from when Rhinelander was a bustling logging town. It reflects the elements of family life found in Rhinelander from around the turn of the century.
Sarocka Field Sarocka Field is a park at the epicenter of Rhinelander. It was home to the Rhinelander High School team for decades and is thought to be the first formal preseason training camp location for the Green Bay Packers, who played there in 1935. A Community with Historical Football Ties Namesake of the College Football Heisman trophy, John Heisman, is buried in the Forest Home Cemetery. The Rhinelander/Oneida County Airport includes a display of Green Bay Packers memorabilia including, Packers jerseys, helmets, footballs, and even Super Bowl rings, from the entire length of the team’s history.

Summer highs average right around 76 . In the last three years, we have averaged around 100 inches of snow. Certain times of the year draw different amounts of people. Snow is melting and warmer weather is coming. Now is a great time for early season outdoor recreational activities. With over 1,100 area lakes nearby, Rhinelander is the perfect spot for fishing opener. Our Hodag Statues – Use the Hodag Finder Map to hunt down all the unique and creatively crafted Hodag Statues around town. Each statue has a different theme, and they all have been painted by various local artists and organizations. The Chamber/Visitor Center is home to the “World’s Largest” Hodag. Find them all and win a Hodag-themed prize.

“Celebrating Rhinelander’s Industry” Mural – The massive mural, designed and painted by Wisconsin artist Alicia Rheal, spans the outer wall located on the west side of the AirPro Fan & Blower Company main office building facing Sutliff Avenue. It chronicles the founders of industry in Rhinelander, starting with the first logging business founded by Anderson Brown, coinciding with the arrival of the railroad in 1886. In all, the mural features 24 founders and their businesses that helped make Rhinelander what it is today. Festivals and Fairs – Rhinelander is home to a calendar full of festivals and fairs year round. From the annual Hodag Country Festival to Project North Festival, the Rhinelander Car Show to our area Fall Festivals, and everything in between – you’ll want to photograph how much fun you have in the Northwoods. Oneida County Courthouse – Visitors to downtown Rhinelander will marvel at the Tiffany glass dome atop this historic building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The 1908 courthouse is a gray limestone ashlar three-story Neo-Classical building with an octagonal, stained-glass, lantern dome, which becomes an internally illuminated, greenish beacon at night.

Our Fall Color – The Rhinelander Area wows visitors with a stunning color display every autumn. The forests surrounding Rhinelander provide a beautiful backdrop for your fall getaway. Hiking and biking options abound, and Rhinelander is surrounded by beautiful public lands that welcome outdoor enthusiasts like the Holmboe Nature Preserve.

Area Parks – Aside from our area trails, 5 area parks offer a variety of scenic adventures here in Rhinelander. Pioneer Park features museums. Hodag Park is beautifully situated on the shores of Boom Lake. Shepard Park features our local dog park and has river views and a nice walking path. West Side Park is home to the Hodag BMX complex, and finally, Sarocka Field is a winter sledding destination.

Historic Architecture – Rhinelander’s history can be told through its people and buildings. Most homes in the courthouse district were built prior to 1894, and many business structures have a great architectural and/or historical significance. Area Parks
Winter Activity Trails
Rhinelander offers a number of parks and other recreational facilities. Hodag Park is located along the beautiful Boom Lake shoreline and features baseball/softball diamonds, park shelters, playground equipment public fishing pier, and swimming beach. Pioneer Park is home to the Logging and Railroad Museum Complex, playground equipment, and park shelters. For your furry friends – the dog park is located at Shepard Park on Boyce Drive. The city is also home to a BMX bike track at the West Side Park.
Cross-country ski or snowshoe miles of well-groomed trails running through the beautiful forests. Trek through the snow-covered pines or glide along tamarack bogs and groves of hemlocks.
Hiking and Biking The Rhinelander Area trails are second to none. There are more than a dozen trails within 15 minutes of Rhinelander offering a trail for every skill level. You’ll find a number of biking opportunities in Hodag Country. Mountain bikers and road cyclists alike will enjoy bicycling in and around the Rhinelander Area.

ATVing Rhinelander offers two different ATV trail systems that are sure to provide a wonderful day of riding. The Little Rice Trail System is located west of Rhinelander and offers 16 miles of woodland trails, 23 miles of connecting road routes, and 76 miles of open town roads. The Enterprise Trail System is located south of Rhinelander. The Enterprise Trails run for 10 miles and links to Langlade and Lincoln County trails. The City of Rhinelander and surrounding townships also offer ATV road routes throughout most of the county.
