YEAR-ROUND FUN ON RHINELANDER’S WATERS In Rhinelander, water is a way of life. With more than 1,100 lakes in Oneida County and easy access to the Wisconsin and Pelican Rivers, there’s always a place to swim, paddle, fish, or simply relax. From family-friendly beaches to quiet forested lakes, Rhinelander’s waters invite you to slow down, explore, and enjoy every season.

MAKE A SPLASH Warm summer days are best spent on the water, and Rhinelander has plenty of places to dive in! Public beaches like Hodag Park on Boom Lake or Almon County Park on Buck Lake offer sandy beach areas perfect for individuals and families. Whether you’re building sandcastles, enjoying a lakeside picnic, or cooling off with a swim, these welcoming spots make it easy to spend the whole day by the water.

PADDLING ADVENTURES If you’re seeking a slower pace, Rhinelander’s lakes and rivers are perfect for a paddle. Launch a kayak or paddleboard for a quiet afternoon on the water. Smaller lakes, like Hanson Lake, as well as stretches of the Wisconsin and Pelican Rivers, offer calm waters suitable for both beginners and seasoned paddlers. You may even spot some wildlife.

FISHING THROUGH THE SEASONS Rhinelander is an angler’s paradise. Cast a line for musky, walleye, bass, and panfish in spring, summer, and fall—or bundle up and try your hand at ice fishing when the lakes freeze over. Local bait shops and outdoor outfitters can point you to the best spots and ensure your tackle is ready for success. There are many public boat launches in the Rhinelander area, making it easy to explore new lakes. Popular locations for fishing include Boom Lake, Lake Thompson, Lake Julia, and the Rainbow Flowage.

CATCH THE SUNSET A Rhinelander sunset is the perfect way to end the day. Bring a blanket to a public beach, relax on a dock, or take in the view from a lakeside park. Whether it’s Boom Lake, Perch Lake, Lake George, or countless other spots, you’ll find the perfect spot for a colorful sunset.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Before you head out, take a moment to review Wisconsin’s boating and fishing rules. If you’re operating a boat, a boater safety certification may be required, and life jackets are always a must. Anglers ages 16 and older will need a fishing license and many lakes have designated no-wake zones to protect shorelines and fellow lake users. By following the rules and putting safety first, you’ll help keep Rhinelander’s waters fun and safe for everyone!

Art lovers will discover plenty of ways to explore creativity. Rhinelander is home to several galleries and exhibit spaces. Public art can be found throughout town, including murals and outdoor installations that can be enjoyed year-round. Visit the Attractions tab of this guide to discover where to find it all.

STROLL DOWNTOWN

Scattered throughout the downtown Brown Street area and beyond, you can find painted hodag statues, each with their own theme. How many can you find? Pick up a Hodag Finder Map at the Chamber & Visitor Center to go on a scavenger hunt to find them all. You can also spot several murals downtown, as well as a few storefronts selling local artwork and handmade goods.

EVENTS AND PERFORMANCES

In Rhinelander, you can find live music at many events and festivals throughout the year. Outdoor concerts in warmer months are held at several locations, including the Hodag Park Amphitheater and the Riverwalk Bandshell. The Hodag Country Music Festival is held every July, bringing together thousands of visitors and locals alike for live country music. Theater and live performances add another dimension to Rhinelander’s creative spirit.

Rhinelander’s ’ Hodag THE LEGEND LIVES ON

If you spend any time in Rhinelander, you’ll quickly notice a curious creature appearing everywhere—from statues and signs to city vehicles and water towers. That creature is the Hodag, the legendary beast that has captured imaginations for more than a century and has become the beloved symbol of Rhinelander.

HOW IT BEGAN

The Hodag’s story begins in Rhinelander’s early days, when the community was a booming logging town. In 1893, a local logger named Eugene Shepard claimed to have seen the fearsome creature deep in the forests. Descriptions were vivid: the Hodag was about 7 feet long and 30 inches tall. It had the head of a frog, the face of an elephant, thick legs with enormous claws, a dinosaur-like back, and a spear-tipped tail. Green eyes, sharp horns, and fangs completed the terrifying picture. The name of the beast, “Hodag”, was a term used to refer to a common logging tool known as a grub hoe.

THE HOAX HEARD ‘ROUND THE NATION

Shepard created elaborate tales and even staged photographs attempting to capture the beast. Word spread around town and curious crowds paid to see the beast at the County Fair, where it growled and moved in the shadows of a darkened

tent. Word of the Hodag spread so far that the Smithsonian Institution planned to investigate. That’s when Shepard admitted the truth: the creature on display was a cleverly crafted hoax made from wood, leather, and wires.

A CREATURE OF MYTH AND MISCHIEF

Even after Shepard’s confession, the Hodag never faded away. Stories of mischievous Hodag sightings continued, from snatched fish off an angler’s line to golf balls mysteriously vanishing on the course. The legend was far too good to let go—and today, it remains a playful part of Rhinelander’s history and identity.

THE HODAG TODAY

Far from a frightful monster, the Hodag has become Rhinelander’s most famous resident. It’s the official high school mascot and a symbol you’ll spot everywhere as you explore the community. The Hodag represents not just a tale from the past, but also the creativity and character of Rhinelander today. So, is the Hodag real? That’s for you to decide. But one thing is certain: when you visit Rhinelander, you’re stepping into Hodag Country—where the legend lives on.

The Hodag Dome, the largest air-supported high school dome in the country, provides a versatile space for football, pickleball, soccer, softball, and a variety of other sports. Ponsse North America In 1995 Ponsse established its U.S. operations and a spare parts outlet in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, marking its entry into the North American market. The company later expanded operations in Rhinelander, choosing it as the North American headquarters and it’s grown into a significant hub for the family-owned Finnish logging equipment manufacturer. In 2025, Ponsse celebrated 30 years in the U.S., underscoring its long-standing commitment to the region and the North American logging industry.
