Welcome to Manitowish Waters

W

Welcome...

elcome to Manitowish Waters! Whether you are here for work, pleasure or just passing through we know that you will find something to love about our home in the Northwoods. Our town is formed around the “Legendary 10 Lake Chain” that is perfect for relaxation and recreation. Our lakes, world class bike trails, restaurants and charming downtown are the centerpiece of a great vacation in any season. Manitowish Waters has always been a place for traditions and making memories with my family and friends. My grandfather

taught me how to fish on the end of our pier on Rest Lake; my family still sets up chairs at 6am to get the perfect spot for the 4th of July parade; and every year we huddle around the fireplace to ring in the New Year with rosy cheeks from a long day playing in the snow. Whatever your interests - biking, skiing, boating, snowmobiling, shopping or total relaxation - I can’t wait for you to make your own traditions and memories in Manitowish Waters. Enjoy your stay, Elizabeth Gering President

rom the earliest times to present day, the history of the Northwoods of Wisconsin has been written by the lakes, rivers, forests and changing seasons. Bands of Native Americans were the earliest inhabitants of Manitowish Waters, drawn by its abundant wild rice, fish, game and even maple syrup that they harvested to sustain generation after generation.

Entrepreneurs saw promise in other ways: some through homesteading; others sensing the desire of city folk to relax, fish and hunt in the pristine and beautiful Northwoods. Sportsmen and wealthy families traveled by rail from Chicago and Milwaukee to rail hubs, then were taken by horse and wagon, some even by boat, to reach their vacation destination. The first lodge was built on Island Lake in the 1880’s. By the first few decades of the 20th Century, Manitowish Waters and the rest of the Northwoods swelled in population as more and more vacationers sought to escape big city life. Small towns grew noticeably bigger, as resorts needed more goods and workers, including fishing guides. During Prohibition, the lodges and halls filled with “one-armed bandits” and “rum runner” spirits. The local law rarely enforced the federal laws against alcohol and gambling. Famous and infamous guests were legendary. Among the latter, were members of the

A notable exception occurred in 1934, when the FBI caught wind that the John Dillinger gang was staying at the Little Bohemia Resort. A trap was laid, but Dillinger escaped. The resulting shootout left town constable Carl Christensen riddled with eight bullet wounds. He survived, got $3,500 from the federal government for his troubles, and started his own resort and bar on Hwy. 51. The tavern is still running today and is called the Cozy Cove. Their Bluegrass Festival in July still brings in big name Bluegrass bands from around the country. Visitors can still see the bullet holes in the walls of Little Bohemia Resort; Christensen’s scrapbook and other historic artifacts are housed at the Koller Library and at businesses throughout town. The town’s colorful history includes tightrope walker Bob Loveless and a caged bear at the Howling Bear. Eventual civic development led to a school, cemetery and town hall. The airport came after World War II when public enthusiasm for aviation burgeoned. With the advent of the snowmobile in the ’60s, the Northwoods officially became a four-season vacationland. Hwy. 51 was vastly improved, greatly improving the time for visitors from Chicago and Milwaukee to travel north.

The earliest European voyageurs and fur trappers were next on the horizon. In the 19th Century, these explorers traded with the natives and mapped the territory for the next influx of immigrants. The Northwoods’ vast timber resources that stretched over the land seemed endless. Timber barons sent their work crews steadily into the Northwoods, felling giant red and white pines, floating them down raging rivers in the spring, and later, bringing them out of the woods by oxen pulling huge loads of cut trees that towered above them.

Chicago mob. For the most part, they behaved themselves while “Up North” and didn’t attract much outside attention.

The Manitowish Waters Skiing Skeeters – one of the oldest amateur water-ski clubs in the U.S. – was established in the late 1950s. They sponsored, and won, the first statewide barefoot tournament held in the U.S. in 1964. National publicity of the event established Manitowish Waters as the “Barefoot Capital of the Midwest.” Today, Manitowish Waters is also famous for its cranberry industry, its location on the Great Wisconsin Birding and Nature Trail, and its breathtaking “Legendary 10-Lake Chain of Lakes.” It is a community connected by a love for nature, its sparkling waters and numerous recreation opportunities. We invite you to make Manitowish Waters your vacation destination and to build your own memories.

ave you noticed? The Northwoods is experiencing a revolution in outdoor recreation with bike trails connecting communities near and far! The Manitowish Waters Trail is now connected to neighboring Boulder Junction, boasting miles of beautiful paved trail along pristine woods and waters. The Manitowish Waters Trail is part of the 45-mile countywide Heart of the Vilas Trail, a system featuring a number of modern trailheads, many with swimming access as well as a variety of restaurants to slack your thirst or settle your hunger. The possibilities are endless and ideal for all levels, from families with young children to touring groups and dedicated riders. One avid biking couple who have ridden trails all over the world, including China, claims Manitowish Waters is the “nicest trail we have been on.”

14

The entire system winds through the 240,000-acre NHAL State Forest, a forest flush with towering pines, lakes and streams, wildlife, wild flowers and rare highland tamaracks. The chattering of red squirrels and the whisper of wind through tall trees greets riders. These same wind-whispers carry the sweet smell of campfire, the laughter of children playing along sandy beach lake shores, and the cry of serenading Loon. One event, the Solstice Festival, highlights these treasures and trails. Celebrating the longest day of the year, the June 16-17, 2017 event acts as the official start to the summer cycling season. Join the excitement and camaraderie by participating in the Family Fun Paved Trail Ride with activities along the way, or the Century Road Ride featuring distances from 25 to 100 miles. Both days conclude with lakeside park gatherings complete with music, food, drinks, games, and more.

Manitowish Waters has two more biking complexes in the North Lakeland Discovery Center and the WinMan Trails, which feature mountain biking for families and skilled riders alike. Mercer, our neighbor to the north, last fall developed a trail that connects that community to the Manitowish Waters Trail. This provides an exciting route starting at the Great Northern Hotel, heading south and connecting to the Manitowish Waters Trail. Join us often for an unparalleled experience to explore the beauty of Wisconsin’s Northwoods -- from exceptional roads to family friendly paved trails to adventurous mountain biking experiences. Manitowish Waters Trail The Manitowish Waters paved trail links the Community Center at U.S. Hwy. 51 and Airport Road to the trails of the North Lakeland Discovery Center and beyond to Boulder Junction, a distance of approximately 16 miles. From the Community Center’s trailhead, it’s 1.2 miles to Hwy. W, which takes riders past Koller Park, the downtown business district and Rest Lake Park. From there, the trail goes east as it shadows Hwy. K. The Community Center has a nice playground, restrooms and water. From North Lakeland Elementary School, the trail resides almost entirely on state land. An arch bridge spans Rice Creek, a favorite of trail users who stop to take photos. There’s a restroom facility and picnic tables at the bridge site. Later on, two separate boardwalks totaling 600 feet span wetlands. North Lakeland Discovery Center Trails The Discovery Center is across from Rest Lake Park and just off the paved bike trail. 12 miles of off-road, multi-use bike trails take riders on quiet wooded trails around the lake and along the Manitowish

Winman Trails The WinMan Trails are the perfect complement to a growing biking community in Manitowish Waters. This new system sits on 1,300 acres and has quickly established itself as a silent sports mecca, providing some of the best mountain biking in the state. With 10 miles and more to come, these purpose-built trails feature flowy single-track, berm turns, rock features, and freeride structures. In addition, there are miles of logging trails to customize your ride, traveling from forest to lake or from woods to town. The site’s natural terrain features rolling topography and unique ecology, making this a blast to recreate in. Trailhead/parking is 2.5 miles north of Smokey’s at the intersection of Hwy. W and Hwy. g Cal’s Borrow-a-Bike program is a unique feature of the Town of Manitowish Waters. The program allows visitors and community members an opportunity to hop on a bike for an hour or more of touring our town. Best of all – it’s a free service! Bikes are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Riders must provide their own helmet and are responsible for the bike’s return in good condition. Many have baskets so riders can pick up items from stores and gift shops. The bikes are unlocked and are provided on an honor system that has worked out very well.

The Manitowish Waters area and its neighbors offer a wide array of trails to hike, mountain bike, cross-country ski and snowshoe for all abilities. All of the trails are within a short drive from your lodging headquarters in Manitowish Waters. Wildlife viewing, friendly folks and great eats along your way will guarantee you and your companions have an experience to remember. A Northwoods’ gem, the Van Vliet (pronounced Van Vleet) Hemlocks, located in neighboring Presque Isle, have more than 5 miles of marked trails for hiking, XC skiing and snowshoeing. Visitors can explore and experience an example of what was once abundant in Wisconsin -- old growth hardwood/hemlock forests. The site’s 400 acres represent a rare remnant of this uniquely historic forest system. Walk along undisturbed cedar swamps and undeveloped bog lakes, climb scenic eskers and take in the richness of the plant and animal life that abounds in this special place. The Van Vliet Hemlocks contain 1.5 miles of undeveloped shoreline on Averill and Van Vliet lakes. Located just 2.2 miles south of Hwy P on the Presque Isle Chain of Lakes. North Lakeland Elementary School Nature/ Cross-Country Ski Trail System offers 10 miles of looping trails suitable for hiking and cross-country skiing. The trails are located on the grounds of the North

Lakeland Elementary School and wind through a variety of towering evergreens and hardwoods. Volunteers from the North Lakeland/Northwoods Ski Touring Association groom the trails during the winter. The trailhead may be accessed from the north side of the school’s football field or from Hwy K and Papoose Lake Road (approx. 1 mile North of Hwy K on Papoose Lake Road.) The Discovery Center, located 1.2 miles east of Hwy 51 on County Rd. W, provides over 12 miles of well-marked trails for hiking & biking, a beautiful snowshoe loop around Statehouse Lake and the bog, groomed/tracked cross-country skiing, plus a one-mile Bill Lambrecht Memorial Interpretive Nature Trail. The gentle terrain winds through woods, around the lake and bog, and along nearby Manitowish River. Snowshoe rentals are available at the Discovery Center for a nominal fee. Powell Marsh State Wildlife Area Trails. Hikers of all ability levels are welcome during all other seasons. Trail loops range in length from 1.5, 2.0, 4.5 and 7 miles. Powell Marsh is home to waterfowl, deer, ruffed grouse, furbearers, raptors, shorebirds, songbirds and many other type of wildlife. These trails are located 6.5 miles from Hwy 51 on Powell Road. The WinMan Trails are a silent sports destination featuring year-round activities. This beautiful 1,300 acre site is situated in the northernmost section of the 260,000-

Premier fishing opportunities await you

anitowish Waters’ lakes, rivers and streams offer plenty of top-notch opportunities to catch that fish of a lifetime, and enough panfish action to keep the small fry excited and smiling while out on the boat with Mom and Dad. The tiara of the Northwoods’ water bodies is Manitowish Waters’ “Legendary chain of lakes” – whose crown jewels encompass 10 lakes chock full of largemouth and smallmouth bass, muskie, walleye, northern pike, crappie, perch, bluegill and sunfish. Anything you need or want in the way of fishing equipment and bait can be found here. Bait shop staff will give you tips on where to fish and what bait, color or presentation is triggering the bite. Our retail and grocery stores have other needed supplies for your stay. There’s also a full-service marina midway on the chain where you can get gas and oil, and if needed, a boat and motor for the day or week. Knowledgeable fishing guides will put you on the hot spots for a memorable outing! There are multiple boat landings on the Manitowish Waters Chain of Lakes, including for larger rigs. You’ll find that winter accessibility is also great for getting portable or permanentstyle ice shelters using your ATV, UTV, snowmobile or 4-wheel drive vehicle onto the lakes.

Test your talent and luck in one of the fishing contests held on area lakes. One of the better-known challenges is held during the Winterfest Rendezvous on Rest Lake in February. Manitowish Waters is also a participating member of the World Championship Musky Classic. Check out our calendar of events for more tournament information. We would be remiss not to guide you to our other great fishing lakes. Some are large, while others are small but hold surprising large numbers of quality fish. Indeed, Vilas County has over 1,300 lakes – all within a short cast from Manitowish Waters! Our pristine rivers and streams offer multiple fish species, including trout. This event is held on Rest Lake just off the boat landing at Rest Lake on Hwy. W, just 1/4 mile north of Manitowish Waters. This is the area’s biggest ice fishing contest with prizes awarded in eight categories. Besides the ice fishing, there are many other activities. In fact, many people who attend do not fish. This is a family event with activities for all: live music, food, refreshments, raffle prizes, hole-in-one contest, hockey accuracy contest and free rides in our 2015 Tucker Groomer. All five of the “Famous Klements Racing Sausages” will be racing and available for photo opportunities. The finale of this great day will be a spectacular fireworks show on the ice. Birding

I

f you love chickadees and other songbirds, loons and other waterfowl, eagles and other raptors, then you will be pleased to know that the Town of Manitowish Waters is an official “Bird City,” one of 15 inaugural Bird Cities in Wisconsin so named in 2010. The designation recognizes the town’s effort to make their neighborhoods a better place for people, birds and other wildlife. Come celebrate the peak of spring bird migration at the 12th Annual Birding Festival on May 12-13, 2017 at the North Lakeland Discovery Center, hosted by the North Lakeland Discovery Center, the Discovery Center Bird Club and Manitowish Waters and Presque Isle Chambers of Commerce. Learn about birds through workshops, hikes, paddles and field trips as you enjoy the gorgeous Northwoods scenery. The Town of Manitowish Waters has three sites on the Lake Superior Northwoods Region of the Great Wisconsin Birding & Nature Trail. These are great places to view many endangered or rare birds in their natural habitat. Powell Marsh State Wildlife Area has an 1,800-acre refuge located in the middle of the 4,300-acre property. Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest has many bald eagle sightings in their nesting habitats. Birders may spot the Alder Flycatchers, Vesper Sparrow, and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and a lucky one or two may also spot a Gray Jay. This 220,000+ acre forest is Wisconsin’s largest property. North Lakeland Discovery Center offers a variety of self-guided trails ideal for bird walks, as well as a number of public programs related to birds. Migrating songbirds, raptors, and waterfowl can be found along the 12-mile trail system. Most commonly seen species are Trumpeter Swans, Winter Wrens, Warblers, Vireos and the Belted Kingfishers. The Cranberry Marshes Manitowish Waters Cranberry Growers Bartling’s Manitowish Cranberry Co.

Likewise, a tour of a working cranberry marsh (or bog) isn’t just a staple of fall anymore. Five Manitowish Waters cranberry growers and the Chamber of Commerce have teamed up to offer free tours of a local marsh beginning in July and continuing through the first week of October so visitors may learn more about this native fruit-bearing plant.

Folsom Farms, Inc.

The berries ripen to ruby red later in the year, so if you can go only once, plan a later trip. Bring a camera to record the gathering of the berries and, of course, their bright color.

Rayala Cranberry Company

About our marshes The Manitowish Waters Cranberry Growers Association’s marshes range in size from 63 acres to 186 acres, totaling about 600 acres.

Vilas Cranberry Company Vilas 51 Cranberry

The marshes were started soon after World War II in an area of Wisconsin that was not yet known for cranberry production. These pioneers undertook building what today is a major scenic and economic staple in Wisconsin’s Northwoods.

See marsh locations on map

The cranberry marshes surround the northeast third of Little Trout Lake, a pristine 1,000-acre nearly uninhabited lake in the southern part of the township.

Cranberries aren’t just for Thanksgiving! This antioxidant-rich “superfruit” can be found in juices, in other healthy products – a favorite of many is sweetened dried cranberries -- and in many recipes to liven up meals throughout the year.

During the marsh tour, you’ll learn that Wisconsin is the nation’s leading producer of cranberries, harvesting more than 60% of the country’s crop. Contrary to popular belief, cranberries do not grow in water. Rather, they grow on low-running vines in beds placed in bogs (or marshes).

When the marshes are flooded the night before harvest, an egg beaterstyle machine loosens the berries (each has four tiny air pockets so they float to the surface). Tractors drag a boom to herd the berries to one end. Workers in waders corral the berries to a vacuum hose to be deposited in the bed of a truck. They are then trucked to the storage bins or directly to the factory for processing. Visit cranberryinstitute.org to learn more about the good health benefits of cranberries and wiscran.org for the Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association. Free Cranberry Marsh Tours Manitowish Waters’ free marsh tours run from the first Friday after July 4th through the first Friday of October. The one-hour tour, rain or shine, starts at 10:00 am each Friday at the Manitowish Waters Community Center/Chamber office. The first half hour is spent viewing an educational video and display, tasting cranberry samples, and prize drawings followed by a Q&A session.

Bobber Down Guide Service 4816 Little Pike Rd, Mercer, WI 54547 715-776-0140 www.bobberdownguideservice.com BobberDownGS@gmail.com I fish with St. Croix rods. They’re made in Park Falls, Wisconsin, and for me that’s about as “buy local” as it gets. My favorite jigging rod is an Avid series 6’8”medium power extrafast action. For slip bobbin’ I like a long rod and use the Triumph series in 7’ medium light fast action. It also makes a nice lower cost jigging rod. I have a pretty aggressive style of fishing but try to adapt to the client’s pace. after all, it is often said, “life should be fun.” Well, fishing should be really fun! I encourage customers to opt for having a shore lunch. A fish fry over a campfire on an island is a fitting compliment to spending a day on the Flowage. It’s a little more effort on my end but I enjoy doing it and don’t count the lunch break into our fishing time. I also have it priced to mainly reflect my costs. DINING GUIDE

Legendary lakes, legendary eats

Y

our travels have taken you this far; now gathered around the evening campfire with family, you watch the sparks dance skyward, chuckle as the kids fill cheeks with roasted marshmallows like the resident chipmunks, and hear an adult voice then ring out: “Where are we going to eat out tomorrow?” Ah, consider the possibilities! As a veteran visitor to Manitowish Waters, you know this community is not only home of the Legendary 10 Lake Chain, but also home to a good number of fine restaurants and eateries. You sit back confident that the local cuisine will reward them with pleasurable and predictable experiences that will have them sighing with satisfaction after the last knife, fork, and spoon is put down.

This is the Northwoods, so hearty food is on the menu. The classic Friday night fish fry, the sizzlin’ steaks, bar burgers piled high with onions and crispy fries on the side dish, of course. There’s more to life, and there’s more to our menus that make your guests wonder if they have been magically taken to a world-renowned Chicago or New York restaurant. Our chefs bring you their best, whether it’s Catfish En Papillote or slow roast prime rib, along with homemade desserts such as Crème Brulee. Fine wines, craft beers and specialty cocktails complement the dining experience.

Celebrating 36 years in business

Careful attention by the servers ensures fast service. At evening’s end, when one gives a friendly wave and says, “Goodnight, folks!”, you know you’ll be back. For breakfast, lunch and dinner! A footnote: We have more than 10 lakes, of course. Dozens and dozens more. So it’s quite possible to travel by boat to some of our restaurants and taverns. Snowmobile trails and frozen lakes up the travel possibilities in winter. In addition to those lakes and great swaths of forests, our excellent roads make it easy to get around by car, truck or motorcycle. Bon appétit!
