rom the earliest times to present day, the history of the Northwoods of Wisconsin has been written by the lakes, rivers, forests and changing seasons. Bands of Native Americans were the earliest inhabitants of Manitowish Waters, drawn by its abundant wild rice, fish, game and even maple syrup that they harvested to sustain generation after generation. The earliest European voyageurs and fur trappers were next on the horizon. In the 19th Century, these explorers traded with the natives and mapped the territory for the next influx of immigrants. The Northwoods’ vast timber resources that stretched over the land seemed endless. Timber barons sent their work crews steadily into the Northwoods, felling giant red and white pines, floating them down raging rivers in the spring, and later, bringing them out of the woods by oxen pulling huge loads of cut trees Lloyd & that towered above them.
Entrepreneurs saw promise in other ways: some through homesteading; others sensing the desire of city folk to relax, fish and hunt in the pristine and beautiful Northwoods. Sportsmen and wealthy families traveled by rail from Chicago and Milwaukee to rail hubs, then were taken by horse and wagon, some even by boat, to reach their vacation destination. The first lodge was built on Island Lake in the 1880’s. By the first few decades of the 20th Century, Manitowish Waters and the rest of the Northwoods swelled in population as more and more vacationers sought to escape big city life. Small towns grew noticeably bigger, as resorts needed more goods and workers, including fishing guides. During Prohibition, the lodges and halls filled with “one-armed bandits” and “rum runner” spirits. The local law rarely enforced the federal laws against alcohol and gambling. Famous and infamous guests were legendary. Among the latter, were members of the Chicago mob. For the most part, they behaved themselves while “Up North” and didn’t attract much outside attention.
A notable exception occurred in 1934, when the FBI caught wind that the John Dillinger gang was staying at the Little Bohemia Resort. A trap was laid, but Bill Monroe Dillinger escaped. The resulting shootout left town constable Carl Christensen riddled with eight bullet wounds. He survived, got $3,500 from the federal government for his troubles, and started his own resort and bar on Hwy. 51. The tavern is still running today and is called the Cozy Cove. Their Bluegrass Festival in July, still brings in big name Bluegrass bands from around the country. Visitors can still see the bullet holes in the walls of Little Bohemia Resort; Christensen’s scrapbook and other historic artifacts are housed at the Koller Library and at businesses throughout town. The town’s colorful history includes tightrope walker Bob Loveless and a caged bear at the Howling Bear. Eventual civic development led to a school, cemetery and town hall. The airport came after World War II when public enthusiasm for aviation burgeoned. Skiing Skeeters - 1962 With the advent of the snowmobile in the ’60s, the Northwoods officially became a fourseason vacationland. Hwy. 51 was vastly improved, slashing the time for visitors from Chicago and Milwaukee to travel north.
HI STO R Y
A Genuine Northwoods / Manitowish Waters Welcome!
The Manitowish Waters Skiing Skeeters – one of the oldest amateur water-ski clubs in the U.S. – was established in the late 1950s. They sponsored, and won, the first statewide barefoot tournament held in the U.S. in 1964. National publicity of the event established Manitowish Waters as the “Barefoot Capital of the Midwest.” Today, Manitowish Waters is also famous for its cranberry industry, its location on the Great Wisconsin Birding and Nature Trail, and its breathtaking “Legendary 10-Lake Chain of Lakes.” It is a community connected by a love for nature, its sparkling waters and numerous recreation opportunities. We invite you to make Manitowish Waters your vacation destination and to build your own memories. Biking: / Pedal through your own epic adventure
ave you noticed? The Northwoods is experiencing a revolution in outdoor recreation with bike trails all over the place! The Manitowish Waters Trail is now connected to neighboring Boulder Junction, boasting miles of beautiful paved trail along pristine woods and waters. The Manitowish Waters Trail is part of the 45-mile countywide Heart of the Vilas Trail, a system featuring a number of modern trailheads, many with swimming access as well as a variety of restaurants to slack your thirst or settle your hunger. The possibilities are endless and ideal for all levels, from families with young children to touring groups and dedicated riders. One avid biking couple who have ridden trails all over the world, including China, claims Manitowish Waters the “nicest trail we have been on.” The entire system winds through the 240,000-acre NHAL State Forest, a forest flush with towering pines, lakes and streams, wildlife, wild flowers and rare highland tamaracks. The chattering of red squirrels and the whisper of wind through tall trees greets riders. These same wind-whispers carry the sweet smell of campfire, the laughter of children playing along sandy beach lake shores, and the cry of serenading Loon. One event, the Solstice Festival, highlights these treasures and trails. Celebrating the longest day of the year, the June 18-19, 2016 event acts as the official start to the summer cycling season. Join the excitement and camaraderie by participating in the Family Fun Paved Trail Ride with activities along the way, or the Century Road Ride featuring distances from 25 to 100 miles. Both days conclude with lakeside park gatherings complete with music, food, drinks, games, and more.
Manitowish Waters has two more biking complexes in the North Lakeland Discovery Center and the WinMan Trails, which feature mountain biking for families and skilled riders alike. This fall, our neighbor to the north, Mercer, will begin development of a trail that will connect to the Manitowish Waters Trail. This will provide an exciting route starting at the Great Northern Hotel, heading south and connecting to the Manitowish Waters Trail. Join us often for an unparalleled experience to explore the beauty of Wisconsin’s Northwoods -- from exceptional roads to family friendly paved trails to adventurous mountain biking experiences. Manitowish Waters Trail The Manitowish Waters paved trail links the Community Center at U.S. Hwy. 51 and Airport Road to the trails of the North Lakeland Discovery Center and beyond to Boulder Junction, a distance of approximately 16 miles. From the Community Center’s trailhead, it’s 1.2 miles to Hwy. W, which takes riders past Koller Park, the downtown business district and Rest Lake Park. From there, the trail goes east as it shadows Hwy. K. The Community Center has a nice playground, restrooms and water. From North Lakeland Elementary School, the trail resides almost entirely on state land. An arch bridge spans Rice Creek, a favorite of trail users who stop to take photos. There’s a restroom facility and picnic tables at the bridge site. Later on, two separate boardwalks totaling 600 feet span wetlands. North Lakeland Discovery Center Trails The Discovery Center is across from Rest Lake Park and just off the paved bike trail. 12 miles of off-road, multi-use bike trails take riders on quiet wooded trails

This new system sits on 1,300 acres and has quickly established itself as a silent sports mecca, providing some of the best mountain biking in the state. With 7 miles and more to come, these purpose-built trails feature flowy single-track, berm turns, rock features, and freeride structures. In addition, there are miles of logging trails to customize your ride, traveling from forest to lake or from woods to town. Big Cal’s Borrow-a-Bike is a free service
ig Cal’s Borrow-a-Bike program is a unique feature of the Town of Manitowish Waters. The program allows visitors and community members an opportunity to hop on a bike for an hour or more of touring our town. Best of all – it’s a free service! Bikes are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Riders must provide their own helmet and are responsible for the bike’s return in good condition. Many have baskets so riders can pick up items from stores and gift shops. The bikes are unlocked and are provided on an honor system that has worked out very well.
B I K I NG
The LaPorte Foundation not only provides the bikes, but also services them to ensure they are in tip-top condition. Currently, there are 25 bikes available in five locations around town. The bikes are marked with stickers and have maps for easy navigation. The bikes are staged in wooden bike racks at Rest Lake Park, Koller Park, Manitowish Waters Airport, The Lodge, and Alderwood Resort. Once you’re off and peddling, you’re free to go wherever you like! But most folks head either downtown for an ice cream treat or maybe lunch, or they get on our fabulous paved bike path for a leisurely ride with friends and family. Photo by Steven Bartling

Hunting & Fishing
By John Andrew pring, Summer, Fall, Winter… are all family time on the lakes in Manitowish Waters. We are one of the premiere destinations of northwestern Vilas County, featuring our “Legendary 10-Lake Chain” that is completely navigable.
Our fishing is also legendary, including for muskie, walleye, large and smallmouth bass, northern pike, crappie, perch, bluegill and sunfish. In all of the 10-Lake Chain there are always great opportunities for each species mentioned. Some lakes are better for certain types of fish while others are better for other types of fish, but always providing a great opportunity for a great day to go fishing.
Whether you take the children geared up with the bobbers and worms for perch and bluegills or you cast for the mighty muskie, the Manitowish Waters Chain of Lakes has what you are looking for. There is a full service marina located in the middle of the chain for fueling your boat or renting a boat for the day or week. Winter is one of the most exciting times to fish the Manitowish Waters Chain of Lakes. We have boat landings on several of the lakes with access for your 4-wheelers and snowmobiles. Pulling your portable or permanent ice shelters onto the ice is easy. There are bait & tackle shops located in Manitowish Waters for all your fishing needs. The fish are biting and the friendly people of our area are waiting for you to arrive! Hunting is very popular and opportunities are widespread throughout our Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest, which is where Manitowish Waters is located. Good populations of deer and bear, along with snowshoe hare, squirrels, grouse, turkey and waterfowl, will satisfy big and small game hunters with plenty of action. With thousands of acres of public land to hunt, and thousands of acres of public water to enjoy, we offer a fantastic year-round destination for everyone!

This group, sponsored by the Manito Art League, gathers in a different location each Thursday morning, June through August, to draw, paint or photograph the beauty of the outdoors. Grab a pencil and sketchbook, some paints and paper, or your camera and create your own art! If you just want to browse and view fine art or perhaps shop for a piece of art, there are wonderful galleries close at hand. The Artists Palette in downtown Manitowish Waters and Moondeer and Friends Gallery in Boulder Junction feature the work of local artists among their eclectic art offerings. The Northwoods Art Tour will take place the weekends of July 29-31 and October 7-9. The self-guided tours take you through the back roads and by-ways of northern Wisconsin where the Northwoods’ finest artists and artistowned galleries give visitors a behind-the-scenes look at how their artwork is created. Artist demonstrations are given, original and local art is for sale, and artists often give access to home studios rarely open to the public. A brochure with gallery and studio information and a map is available at the Manitowish Waters Chamber of Commerce.

Manitowish Waters Activities Guide 2016 Hi, Sarah,
f you love chickadees and other songbirds, loons and other waterfowl, eagles and other raptors, then you will be pleased to know that the Town of Manitowish Waters is an official “Bird City,” one of 15 inaugural Bird Cities in Wisconsin so named in 2010. The designation recognizes the town’s effort to make their neighborhoods a better place for people, birds and other wildlife. Come celebrate the peak of spring bird migration at the 12th Annual Birding Festival on May 13-14, 2016 at the North Lakeland Discovery Center, hosted by the North Lakeland Discovery Center, the Discovery Center Bird Club and Manitowish Waters and Presque Isle Chambers of Commerce. Learn about birds through workshops, hikes, paddles and field trips as you enjoy the gorgeous Northwoods scenery. The Town of Manitowish Waters has three sites on the Lake Superior Northwoods Region of the Great Wisconsin Birding & Nature Trail. These are great places to view many endangered or rare birds in their natural habitat. Powell Marsh State Wildlife Area has an 1,800-acre refuge located in the middle of the 4,300-acre property. Bird species most commonly seen are Bobolink, Great Blue Herons, Yellow Rail, Songbirds, Marsh Hawks, Common Loons, Eagles, Sandhill Cranes, Northern Harriers, Sharp-tailed Grouse, LeConte’s Sparrows, Short-Eared Owls, Nelson’s Sharp Tailed Sparrows and Henslow’s Sparrows. Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest has many bald eagle sightings in their nesting habitats. Birders may spot the Alder Flycatchers, Vesper Sparrow, and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and a lucky one or two may also spot a Gray Jay. This 220,000+ acre forest is Wisconsin’s largest property. North Lakeland Discovery Center offers a variety of self-guided trails ideal for bird walks, as well as a number of public programs related to birds. Migrating songbirds, raptors, and waterfowl can be found along the 12-mile trail system. Most commonly seen species are Trumpeter Swans, Winter Wrens, Warblers, Vireos and the Belted Kingfishers. Experience the 22-station breeding bird trail, which highlights birds you will likely encounter in various locations throughout the 12-mile trail system.

he Manitowish Waters Cranberry Growers consists of five marshes ranging in size from 63 acres to 186 acres, totaling about 600 acres. These marshes were started soon after World
War II in an area of Wisconsin that was not yet known for cranberry production. These pioneers undertook building what is today – a major scenic and economic contributor to Wisconsin’s Northwoods. The cranberry marshes surround the northeast 1/3 of Little Trout Lake, a pristine 1,000 acre nearly-uninhabited lake, which is located along the southern edge of the Manitowish Waters town line.

Sporting GoodS & Services Bobber Down Guide Service 4816 Little Pike Rd, Mercer, WI 54547 715-776-0140 www.bobberdownguideservice.com BobberDownGS@gmail.com I fish with St. Croix rods. They’re made in Park Falls, Wisconsin, and for me that’s about as “buy local” as it gets. My favorite jigging rod is an Avid series 6’8”medium power extra-fast action. For slip bobbin’ I like a long rod and use the Triumph series in 7’ medium light fast action. It also makes a nice lower cost jigging rod. I have a pretty aggressive style of fishing but try to adapt to the client’s pace. after all, it is often said, “life should be fun.” Well, fishing should be really fun! I encourage customers to opt for having a shore lunch. A fish fry over a campfire on an island is a fitting compliment to spending a day on the Flowage. It’s a little more effort on my end but I enjoy doing it and don’t count the lunch break into our fishing time. I also have it priced to mainly reflect my costs. Careful attention by the servers ensures fast service. At evening’s end, when one gives a friendly wave and says, “Goodnight, folks!”, you know you’ll be back. For breakfast, lunch and dinner! Snowmobile trails and frozen lakes up the travel possibilities in winter. In addition to those lakes and great swaths of forests, our excellent roads make it easy to get around by car, truck or motorcycle. Bon appétit!
