Teaching code is one of the best ways to encourage students to use creativity, problem solving and critical thinking. The necessary skills to code successfully (such as problem decomposition and sequential processing) are vital to higher level thinking in any subject. Coding is a way to build these skills, while also building confidence and encouraging perseverance. Python is one of the easiest languages to teach, because it has some very useful features for a beginning programmer, including being quite easy to read compared to some other languages. Teaching (and learning) the Python language can help students and teachers to improve their new century skills.

WR4135 Infusing the Curriculum with GPS and Geocaching Cheryl Phillips, Instruction Technology Coach, Pennington School, Prince William County, Virginia As educators, we seek ways to integrate engaging technology to extend learning beyond regular school hours. An educator’s goal is for students to take ownership of their learning and develop both practical and critical thinking skills. Tasking students with a GPS-based activity and a sound lesson plan offers a superior and engaging way to meet this challenge. Authentic methods to infuse learning with GPS activities, an assortment of resources relating to geocaching, and lesson plans and QR codes will be included. It is our hope you will catch the geocaching bug and set out to create some academically rich geocaching adventures for your students.
