Computer Know How! – Slow Computer? - UPGRADE! … Does your PC seem slow to use, slow to start up, slow to shut down maybe even noisy? Well these could be just some of the signs that suggest the hard drive could be at the end of its life. If you’re running Windows 7 or higher, we recommend changing the hard drive for a solid-state drive (SSD). This is a drive that uses flash memory as a means of storing and accessing data, much like computer RAM but still behaves in the same way a Hard Drive does. Unlike other storage devices such as the original hard drive in your PC, an SSD has no moving parts, which gives it advantages such as; accessing stored information MUCH faster, produces no noise, often much more reliable, and consumes much less power than the traditional hard drive (HDD) found in computers. This upgrade will significantly increase the speed of your PC even if it’s not very old. This is a possibly the best upgrade to carry out and at a fraction of the cost of a new machine. Assuming your PC is still working we can clone the original drive onto the SSD so the computer will be exactly as it is now, just much faster (can deliver speeds of up to 100 times faster than a hard drive) and more reliable. If you would like more information on SSD drives or would like to upgrade your PC please call us and we arrange this for you.

Get the new Internet Explorer Edge…

Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 and legacy Edge support ends 2021. Microsoft has announced that its apps and services will stop supporting Internet Explorer 11 on August 17, 2021. It will be dropping support for its existing legacy version of Microsoft Edge on March 9, 2021. Apart from all of this, the company has also announced that it will be dropping support for its existing legacy version of Microsoft Edge on March 9, 2021. After the slated date, Microsoft will not be releasing any security updates for the browser. The new Chromium-based Edge browser can be downloaded at https://www.microsoft.com/ en-us/edge or just search for Edge. Microsoft are also saying that all future Windows feature updates will include the new Edge browser.

6

Magazine #GetInTheLOOP

Chromium is the engine that Microsoft now uses to run its Edge browser. It is owned and developed by Google. At Hypersonic we like the Google Chrome browser although we have to say that the new Edge from Microsoft is very good. Why not have both on your PC or laptop and alternate from one to another, you may find a favourite.

Theatre and Art “He shaved the faces of gentlemen, who were never thereafter heard of again.” How can you find creative ways of killing someone without being too close? That has been the challenge of the cast and directors of Sondheim’s celebrated musical Sweeney Todd, which opens next week, with Titchfield Festival Theatre’s Artistic Director Kevin Fraser promising a new “post Covid” style of theatre. Kevin Fraser said, “Sweeney Todd is our first production at the main theatre in St Margaret’s Lane since March and all of our team have been extremely busy putting in place the necessary arrangements to ensure safe distancing throughout the building, including sanitising the theatre thoroughly after each performance. “However, it is not just the backstage team that has had to think creatively in this new world we live in. The directors, producers and cast have worked hard too, constantly thinking about how to change the fight scenes for example, and the interaction between the actors to ensure that there is safe distancing at all times. Of course, Sweeney Todd is a particularly sinister and gruesome tale set in the dark streets of Victorian London, so we have had to find unique ways of disposing of all the bodies!”

Sweeney Todd's story is one that encapsulates excitement, romance, revenge and humour through a beautifully rich, challenging and humorous score and script. Hugh Wheeler’s script has focused the charm and wit of each spoken scene to that of a laser beam. The team directing the Titchfield production is Sassy Harvey, Daniel Brown and Elliott Fendle, with Sassy and Daniel making their directorial debuts; Elliott having directed Avenue Q last year. Sassy said, “We are so looking forward to performing in the theatre again – and Kevin and the team have been great, dedicated to finding ways that ensure the safety of patrons, the cast and crew. “The requirements relating to social distancing and singing have required us to adopt a more refined chorus. Therefore, the large chorus ensemble has been condensed down to a fiery, ferocious and fierce trio of ‘Fates’ throughout the majority of ensemble numbers. “As well as making alterations to the singing, the majority of the blood and gore is suggested, implied and technically executed to remove the overt horror and to remain socially distanced as a cast. Although I promise the audience that there will still be plenty of blood!” Sweeney Todd will be performed between Wednesday 9th – Saturday 19th September at 7.30pm (matinée performances on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th at 2.30pm) in the Oak Theatre, Titchfield Festival Theatre, St Margarets Lane, Titchfield PO14 4BG . Socially distanced workshops with Wiltshire photographer at Savernake Forest

This autumn Wiltshire photographer Nigel Hudson is running socially distanced workshops at Savernake Forest. “The forest is a beautiful environment but also a visual challenge, which makes it the perfect place to learn how to accelerate photography skills and realise creative potential,” says Nigel, a professional photographer for over 40 years and whose workshops run for four hours. “My workshops are open to everyone, no matter what age or level of experience. The emphasis is firmly on amplifying your existing skills and developing an intuitive method of working that will allow you to create images that have real impact.” He adds: “Photography, like painting or

writing, is a vehicle by which we can express our unique vision of the world: and it is not all about F stops and exposures. As you progress, you will find that the technical aspects of photography become second nature and that the real joy is in your newfound ability to create truly personal images that have powerful emotional impact. All you need to bring is your preferred camera equipment, which ideally would include a tripod. And of course, plenty of batteries and CF/SD cards. I would also recommend suitable clothing for a woodland environment: stout footwear is essential.” For more information contact Nigel on: Tel. 07778 806767 Email. nigel@nigelhudson.co.uk Web. https://bit.ly/3irBYem

Sunflower Patch opened a route to an Amaze-ing Time

Although thunderstorms threaten to spoil the unseasonably hot weather we are experiencing, the sun won’t be driven from a field near Fordingbridge, it opens it’s gates this to welcome staycationers or families of any size on to their patch to walk amongst and pick some of the 60,000 vibrant sunflowers growing on the three acre site. Opening the gate beside the A338 at Bickton, Niall Smith said “ It’s like a painting from a dutch master, a vibrant palate of yellows and oranges to warm the soul, just half an hour will brighten your day.” Up to Eight different varieties Including Sunrich Orange, Suntastic Yellow, Big Smile, Ring of Fire and Ruby Eclipse can be picked by anyone who books a timed session ticket online, allowing them also to enjoy the challenge of a giant maize maze, spanning four acres with two kilometres of pathways measuring three meters in width to enable good social distancing as the puzzle seekers tread their way to the centre of the tallest maize in the county, measuring over 2.5 meters tall. Sunflower picking patch founders Niall Smith and Suzanne Hennekens enlisted the help of

14

Magazine #GetInTheLOOP

Dutch maze designer Erik Hooijmeijer as they worked out with pinpoint accuracy the exact planting specifications needed to create a fun design, and as social distancing became a new challenge, plot a route that wouldn’t compromise the fun for the outdoor enthusiasts. Patch founder Suzanne Hennekens said “ It has been a determination of ours to create a positive colourful and happy environment for families staying at home this summer, to step outside and enjoy some safe outdoors time together ”. For all those budding painters, an easel, canvas and paints can set you on your way to a creative day amongst the thousands of sunflowers, whilst plenty of crafts and tyre toys will entertain the children and hay bales to climb will stimulate their imagination after traversing the maze. When the season is completed the environmental benefits have been thought through too, with all remaining sunflowers left for over wintering birds to feed and the maize cut for silage to keep local farm animals feed. Leisure centres in Winchester District welcome members back River Park Leisure Centre in Winchester and Meadowside Leisure Centre in Whiteley have reopened their doors for people to enjoy activities and sports once again. Staff at both centres have been busy behind-the-scenes putting in place various safety measures to enhance social distancing so people can enjoy using the gym facilities, swimming, various classes and sports with confidence. To use the leisure centres people will now need to book activities in advance, either online or by using the Everyone Active app before visiting the centres. Users must make sure they are already in their sports kit and are also reminded not to visit if they have any COVID-19 symptoms. Winchester City Council Leader Cllr Lucille Thompson said: “It is wonderful to see our much-loved leisure centres welcome people back. These fantastic places contribute so much to the wellbeing of our residents by providing a space for people to train, swim, take part in

Work begins on new Pirelli Park play area

Work is under way on the new play area at Pirelli Park in the centre of Eastleigh. Contractors, working for the Borough Council, have started construction of the new facility and there will be limited access for residents until it is completed. The design of the play area takes inspiration from the heritage of the Pirelli Cable factory that used to be where the Pirelli Estate is now. The play space uses the shapes of the cable drums and wires to create structures for play that are unique to this park with the patterns in the safety surface featuring some of the artwork created by local children. The funding for the project came from a combined fund for Play and Public Art, drawn from contributions from the developer of nearby

20

homes, Bellway. Cabinet Member for Social Policy and Chair of ELAC, Councillor Tina Campbell, said “We had to suspend work on this site whilst the country was in lockdown, but we’re really pleased to be back on site now building a fantastic new play area for local children to play in. Play parks like this are so important for helping families to keep active and stay fit and healthy.” Work began on the site on Monday 17 August with the area expected to be closed until later in the autumn. A large area of the park is currently fenced off to allow the construction of the play area which will restrict the use of the park. The area that has been fenced off is marked out on the below map.

Young Nomads selected for elite national swimming programme Three young Fareham Nomads Swimming club members have been selected to be part of the Swim England National Development Programme, a scheme to promote the country's best young swimming talent. The three swimmers George Snow, aged 14, Emma Skelton and Joe Dollimore, both aged 13, will benefit from a number of online workshops that aim to help improve their performance. The first workshop will focus on topics such as 'loving race day', injury prevention and sleep recovery. Other sessions will focus on developing their body conditioning, improving mobility, and stability. The programme has been moved online by Swim England due to the Coronavirus pandemic. All three swimmers are part of Fareham Nomads elite 'Platinum' squad, which sees swimmers training up to 9 times per week, with additional circuits and gym sessions. George and Emma have swam with Fareham Nomads as youngsters, coming through the squads. Joe also swims for Gosport Dolphins Swimming Club and trains with Nomads as part of a training agreement between the two clubs. Fareham Nomads swimming club has around 250 members ranging from aged 4 in the 'Learn to Swim' programme to elite swimmers who

compete in national finals. There is also a Masters squad for older swimmers looking to stay fit or compete in Masters Competitions. Swimmers at Nomads can progress from learning to swim to competing at the highest levels. HMS COLLINGWOOD VETERAN’S CYCLE CHALLENGE TO SUPPORT CARERS

HMS Collingwood’s Environment & Energy Manager will soon be facing a different kind of energy challenge as he attempts a daunting fundraising trip.

Mark “Cozy” Powell will join with a group of other Armed Forces veterans to cycle the 180 miles from Birmingham’s Bullring to Havant Ex-Serviceman’s Club near Portsmouth in just four days. The aim is to raise both awareness and funds to help Macmillan Cancer Support nurses, who are there for cancer patients from diagnosis right through all stages of treatment. They understand that a life-changing cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming and so provide emotional, financial and practical advice and support. Cozy’s team wanted to help these

22

Magazine #GetInTheLOOP

valued people in direct ways that will hopefully benefit their working lives and support them as they help others. Although Cozy and friends Keith Clark, Steve Vaughan and Spencer Drain often champion good causes in their communities, they are not experienced long distance cyclists, having previously managed just a maximum of 25 miles. This challenge will see them push themselves to double this distance for four consecutive days to complete the journey. Explaining the reasons behind this daunting challenge, Cozy said “I have been saddened this year by the number of close friends that have been devastated with tragic and

Royal Navy terminal news due to cancer. I have seen first hand how it has affected their lives and their families and can’t put into words the emotions and feelings of these situations. I have in mind three special people who are living day to day not knowing what tomorrow will bring. When I have listened to the incredible stories of what they have endured with treatment, pain and suffering, two things stand out in particular. One, how lucky I am, so I really want to do something to help them in their time of need, and two, the incredible humanity of the doctors and nurses that have supported each of them at such a low point at the near end of their lives. They do it, day in and day out. Now Covid has changed their lives as well and it is just very stressful for everyone. Unless you come into contact with this subject you may not even know these specialist nurses exist. We all take life for granted, but it is a special gift we should cherish and hold onto for as

long as possible. These nurses are amazing and have to cope with a roller-coaster of emotions just the same as you and I. I have never done anything like this before but while I am fit and healthy, I want to give these people something to say “thank you” for helping the people I know and love. My thoughts and best wishes go to Steve and his sister Carron who is no longer with us, Keith and his brother Brian and my good friend Spencer Drain and his wife and family. For everyone else who has gone through the same pain or may be in the same position, I want you to know, there are genuine people who care, and we are thinking and praying for you all.” To support this very worthy cause, please donate via the team’s JustGiving page on https://bit.ly/32mHuJE Photograph courtesy of Mark “Cozy” Powell Caption: Keith Clark, Spencer Drain, Steve Vaughan and Cozy Powell take a break on a training run.

SCOTTISH SAILOR ACHIEVES AWARD IN FIRST YEAR OF SERVICE

A sailor from Neilston, East Renfrewshire, recently topped off an excellent year by receiving a coveted accolade at an award ceremony at HMS Collingwood.

Engineering Technician (ET) Jordan Dalgleish received the Herbert Lott Award from Officer Commanding Weapon Engineering Training Group Commander Jonathan Pearce in a socially distanced ceremony at the Establishment. Herbert Lott was a Victorian stockbroker who set up a fund to “encourage efficiency” within the Royal Navy and the annual award is much valued by those who receive it. Jordan, who attended Eastwood High School and the University of the West of Scotland, only joined the Royal Navy in July 2019 and lists building computers, reading and meeting new people amongst his hobbies. His Herbert Lott Award citation reads: ET Dalglish has greatly impressed instructors throughout his course, completing all the work to a very high standard. It is evident that he has studied previously at a high level. In areas that were new to him he used his research and notes to develop his knowledge further. In a number of practical activities, he was highly commended for his enthusiasm and knowledge by the instructors.

24

Magazine #GetInTheLOOP

ET Dalglish was impressive in his understanding of the course content and was able to use this to communicate information during class discussions. He showed a desire to learn and share his knowledge, with an excellent attitude at all times. Consistently top of his class with a great understanding and enthusiasm, he regularly demonstrated his leadership skills by readily assisting other members of the class. He demonstrates the maturity and aptitude required for the Fast Track scheme and has been recommended for this by several of his instructors. He shows a strong commitment to the RN ethos which will make him an outstanding asset to the WE Department in the Fleet. Speaking of the future Jordan said, “I’m grateful for the opportunities the Royal Navy will give me which I’ll gladly accept.” Jordan’s next step in his naval career will be a posting to HMS Duncan. INEOS TEAM UK – THE BRITISH CHALLENGER FOR THE 36TH AMERICA’S CUP

INEOS TEAM UK was formed in 2018 to bring the America’s Cup home to Britain. The America’s Cup is the oldest international sporting trophy in the world, pre-dating the modern Olympics, the Ryder Cup and the World Cup. The Cup originated in 1851 when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert hosted the Great Exhibition, to showcase the best of British technology and excellence to the world. They invited the New York Yacht Club to send over a vessel that would represent American shipbuilding prowess and compete against the British fleet in a race around the Isle of Wight. After winning the trophy, the United States embarked on what would become the longest winning streak in the history of sport, a 132-year stretch of domination. The Cup has only been won by four nations in its history: USA, Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland. A British entry has never won the America’s Cup. INEOS TEAM UK is based in Old

Portsmouth and led and backed by INEOS Founder and Chairman, Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Sir Ben Ainslie, a previous America’s Cup winner (AC34) and the most successful Olympic sailor of all time is Team Principal and Skipper and four times America’s Cup winner, Grant Simmer is team CEO. Combined, the team has 16 Cup wins and eight Olympic medals. The 36th edition of the Cup (AC36) takes place in Auckland in 2021. The Cup is ultimately a design and technology race and INEOS TEAM UK will use the best of British innovation to design and build two ‘AC75’ boats; 75-foot foiling mono-hulls. Each competing team races under a challenging Yacht Club and INEOS TEAM UK will race for Royal Yacht Squadron Racing. Founded in 1815, the Royal Yacht Squadron – based in Cowes on the Isle of Wight - is regarded as one of the most prestigious yacht clubs in the world.

THE AC75 – ‘BRITANNIA’ KEY FACTS From the moment the AC75 Class Rule was published on 29 March 2018 by the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand, the team have put over 90,000 design and 50,000 construction hours to get Britannia in the water. INEOS TEAM UK Chief Designer, Nick Holroyd, outlined the complexity of the challenge; “This AC75 is the first foiling monohull of this size, it’s unlike anything ever seen on the water before, it’s hugely ambitious and it sets out an entirely new type of boat and with only eighteen months to design and build there comes challenges, but that’s what makes the Cup so exciting.” The name ‘Britannia’ was chosen by INEOS TEAM UK founder and owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in homage to the racing cutter yacht ‘Britannia’ whose name in turn was taken from James Thomson’s famous poem ‘Rule Britannia!’ written in 1740. The original Britannia was built in 1893 for King Edward VII, the then Prince of Wales.

Meet the Skipper

INEOS TEAM UK’s sailing team includes several Olympic Gold medal winners and some of the world’s most successful sailors. Ben Ainslie (GBR) – Team Principal & Skipper

Sir Ben Ainslie is the most successful Olympic sailor of all time, he has competed and medalled at five Olympic games. At his first ever Olympic Games, aged 19, he won an Olympic silver medal and went on to establish himself as the world’s best by winning consecutive gold medals at the next four Olympic Games. Fresh from his London 2012 success, Ben turned his focus to the next challenge, competing with Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) on the 2012/13 America’s Cup World Series. In the summer of 2013, he went on to join ORACLE TEAM USA as Tactician for their

defence of the 34th Cup, helping the American team win the event, 9-8, against Emirates Team New Zealand. Ben was an instrumental part in one of the greatest comebacks sport has ever seen, becoming the first Briton, for 110 years, to be part of a winning Cup team. Ben is now the Team Principal and Skipper of Britain’s America’s Cup team. The team won the 2015/16 Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series and in 2017 he led his first British challenge to compete in the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda. Ben will now lead INEOS TEAM UK in the team’s attempt to win the 36th America’s Cup in Auckland in 2021.

100 CONVERSATIONS HELP RELIEVE LONELINESS DURING LOCKDOWN

“Ahoy There” – Cowes Sailability Club initiative holds over 100 conversations during COVID-19 lockdown. Volunteers at Cowes Sailability Club, on the Isle of Wight, conducted over an impressive 100 telephone conversations to people with disabilities during the COVID-19 lockdown, helping to relieve feelings of isolation and loneliness. At the beginning of Lockdown, Cowes Sailability Club, a registered charity which provides sailing to children and adults with physical and learning difficulties, realised that many of its own volunteers and members - a large proportion of whom have disabilities or underlying medical conditions - and hence amongst the most vulnerable during the pandemic, may start to feel vulnerable during this difficult time. Many of the club’s members and volunteers were identified as high risk criteria for contracting coronavirus and had to stay home and self-isolate. To help provide emotional support throughout what could be a long period of uncertainty and social isolation, the Club launched its ‘Ahoy There’ initiative. This successful initiative sought to give support to those who may have been vulnerable and self-isolating or living alone through a simple system of talking. Representatives from the charity telephoned any member or volunteer who requested a call, to lift their spirits and help

36

Magazine #GetInTheLOOP

relieve feelings of isolation and loneliness. The Ahoy There initiative was conceived and run by Cowes Sailability Club volunteer Kathryn White. Kathryn commented: “Because Cowes Sailability Club provides activities specifically for people who have disabilities or debilitating medical conditions, the club’s members were among the most vulnerable people on the Isle of Wight at the height of the COVID-19 outbreak.” “Setting up the Ahoy There initiative felt like the right thing to do, and I am absolutely delighted that the scheme has enabled the club to provide companionship and support for so many people at a very challenging time.”

Maritime Stuart Manton is one of the people who appreciated Cowes Sailability Club’s support during the lockdown. A club member since 2009, he lives alone in the west of the Isle of Wight and has a visual impairment. Stuart said: “You don’t realise the value of contact with other people until it is taken away. I’m normally a cup half full person, but there were definitely times when I felt quite low, so I really valued the support I received from Cowes Sailability Club. Every week, Chris, one of the club’s volunteers, gave me a ring for a chat and it was nice to be able to talk about all sorts of things, not just sailing. I found the conversations very supportive, especially at the beginning of the lockdown when everything felt very uncertain.” Wendy Todd, an enthusiastic young club member with cerebral palsy, has benefited from regular conversations with Judy, another volunteer at the club. Wendy added: “COVID stopped me from socialising as I would normally do. It also stopped me from going dancing, seeing my friends, volunteering with Friends of St Mary’s Hospital and, most of all, sailing with Cowes Sailability Club, which was a highlight in my week. This made me feel very sad at times, no matter how hard I tried to keep myself busy with other hobbies at home. Then I had a very surprising phone call from Judy. She inspired me to keep my hobbies going and called me weekly, which meant the world to me, as I was able to talk about how much I missed sailing and she understood. We had really good and funny conversations. Thank you Judy and everyone who set up Ahoy There.” Trish Rooke, Fundraising Officer for Cowes Sailability Club added: “I would like to say thank you to Kathryn for setting up the Ahoy There initiative and another thank you to the team of volunteers who stepped forward to have conversations with members. Everyone involved made a big difference to the lives of people with disabilities during lockdown.” Leon Ward, RYA South Disability Development Officer, stated: “As I’m sure everyone can relate to, keeping in touch with friends and family has been so important during this time when we can’t physically meet up like we normally would. Cowes Sailability Club and its Ahoy There

initiative has really helped with that connection. By staying in touch with its members and volunteers, the club has given vital support to some of those that have been greatly affected.” Although sailing is still yet to return to Cowes Sailability Club it has recently received £2,563 of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Community Emergency Fund, which will be used to help the club cover the storage and other essential running costs for its boats during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Cowes Sailability Club is currently appealing for funding to purchase a new wheelchairaccessible motorboat so that it can offer more boating trips for people with disabilities on the Isle of Wight. Taking a motorboat trip can be incredibly beneficial for those who have to overcome the challenges of physical disabilities, illness, and mental health issues on a daily basis. Adults and children alike can build their confidence by learning new skills, improve their health by undertaking an outdoor activity, and relieve their isolation and loneliness by meeting new people. This will be even more beneficial now as many of it’s members have been shielding from the Covid 19 virus. Charity in the Community ROTARY CLUB OF FAREHAM Purple Community Fund helped through crisis by the Rotary Club of Fareham

There are some charities that just tick every box for needing our help – whether in this country or overseas. One of those worthy causes supported by the Rotary Club of Fareham, in a long-standing relationship, is PCF - the Purple Community Fund. As an example, in 2016 our Club was instrumental in providing solar panels on the roof of the PCF School in Tondo as an ongoing economy initiative.

over 10,000 children and provided health and welfare education. So, where do we come into it locally ‌ The Rotary Club of Fareham heard that the families supported by PCF were receiving the necessary food stocks but then further disaster struck.

The Purple Community Fund was started in 1996 by Jane Walker MBE and the charity is based in Hedge End. It supports women and children living AND working on the rubbish dumps of Manilla in the Philippines. Looking around at our own children close by, it is unthinkable to have youngsters in such terrible surroundings and Jane decided to do something to make their lives better. They recycle everything imaginable from truck tyres to drinks can ring-pulls! Before the added pressures of the Coronavirus, Jane and her team supported those working as waste pickers and set up a feeding programme for undernourished children. PCF has educated

Charity in the Community A devastating fire swept through the community. 1055 people lost their homes, possessions, food and even clothes. As Rotarian John Rowlinson, who liaises with the Purple Community Fund for our Club, said “PCF were able to open their centres to help the affected families to give them a place to stay. They opened a community kitchen to feed children and their parents with three meals a day. When I heard of this, I knew that the Rotary Club of Fareham could once again offer help during this current crisis.” Members of the Club and Rotary charities were able to raise funds between them and sent out £1,445 to the Philippines for PCF. Some of that was used immediately to buy 55 sacks of rice providing 10kg bags of rice for 138 families. PCF then added donations of vegetables and canned goods giving cooked meals for the

families while they were rebuilding their homes after the fire had left them homeless. So, the positive effects of the Rotary Club of Fareham were felt 6,729 miles away in Tondo, Manilla putting into perspective our own concerns to help these families at the time of their greatest need. We continue to support them and, if you would like further details of this charity, the Purple Community Fund can be found at www.p-c-f.org Photos show the waste pickers on the rubbish dumps and also the health facilities set up by the Purple Community Fund.

Charity in the Community Council run summer youth programme teams up with food banks to help Borough families

Council-run summer youth programme, Park Sport, has provided Eastleigh Borough’s three food banks with gift bags containing sports equipment to help families affected by the coronavirus pandemic to stay fit and healthy. The Borough has three food banks located in Eastleigh town centre, Hedge End and Hound. They are run by independent charities that help support around 80 families experiencing financial hardship. During the relief phase of the pandemic the Council’s HealthWorks and SportWorks team developed a stronger relationship with the food banks and used the connection to promote the health and wellbeing programmes that they offer to residents. Councillor Tonia Craig, Cabinet Member for Health, said: “We’re really pleased to have been able to offer some of the families that

rely on the food banks something to help them to stay fit and healthy during the summer holidays. These gift bags have activities for children that will keep them entertained and active.” The gift bags include equipment, such as a bat and ball, football and frisbee and are hoped to encourage children to exercise and maintain their wellbeing during this time of uncertainty, they will be handed out to families at the various food banks. Park Sport is Eastleigh Borough Council’s summer youth programme aimed at 8 to 16 year-olds in the Borough. The programme was forced to alter the way it operated this year due to the pandemic. Most of the activities were either virtual or for people to take part in at a time that suited them.

Charity in the Community Locks Heath Rotary helps Africa region to be wild Polio Free!

Locks Heath Rotary has played a role in a significant global public health achievement, as the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Africa region has officially been certified wild polio-free. Polio is a debilitating disease mainly affecting children, which can cause paralysis and even death. This incredible milestone is the result of decades of effort from volunteer members of Rotary clubs around the world, who have fundraised, campaigned and worked tirelessly since Rotary pledged to rid the world of polio more than 30 years ago. Locks Heath Rotary has played their part by fundraising through local street collections supporting World Polio day on the 24th October each year, sale of purple crocus and rotary umbrellas together with fun fundraising events including wine and cheese tasting evenings. President John Murray said, “This is a terrific landmark in the world’s battle to eradicate polio. Although it has been many years since polio has been present in the UK and Ireland, we are proud to have contributed to the global efforts to eliminate the disease for good.” “We remain committed to making the final, challenging steps towards making a polio free world a reality.” “If we don’t finish the job, it is estimated

that, within 10 years, as many as 200,000 children annually all over the world could succumb to polio, including here in the UK. The virus can literally be a plane ride away so vaccination is so important.” Despite this significant milestone being reached, the job to fully rid the world of polio goes on, as the virus continues to circulate in parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Rotary has directly contributed more than US$2 billion to ending polio since 1985. In order to sustain this progress, vaccination programmes must continue to protect every last child and strengthen routine immunisation to keep immunity levels high, so the virus does not return to Africa or other parts of the world, including the UK. Charity in the Community Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club News…End Polio Now

There was exciting news on 25th August when the World Health Organisation declared that the whole continent of Africa had been free of the wild Polio Virus for more than 3 years. Bishops Waltham Rotary has been contributing to the End Polio Now project since the club’s formation in 1989. The project was started by Rotary in 1985, when there were 350,000 cases of wild polio in 125 Countries every year. Rotary has been partnered by UNICEF and more recently the Bill Gates Foundation to advocate the benefits of the eradication of the virus which can cause severe disabilities, with children under 5 most vulnerable to infection. The announcement that Africa is wild polio free means that there are only two countries in the world where transmission of the wild virus has never been stopped these are Afghanistan and Pakistan. Rotary works with all the agencies in those countries to deliver vaccine to all children under 5, often struggling against the climate and communities that do not understand the benefits of immunisation despite this there have only been 102 cases of wild virus infection worldwide this year. The United Nations have established a World Polio Day on 25th October every year. As part of the awareness campaign Bishops Waltham Rotary will be planting 4000 purple crocus corms around the area during October. Look out

Street collection in aid of those affected by the explosion in Beirut Many of you would have been shocked, like us, to have seen the footage of the major explosion that shook Beirut in August, the sheer scale of the devastation and the numbers affected. We were very keen to help out by organising a street collection, but we were mindful of ensuring that any funds we sent would reach the right people, plus there were the practicalities of trying to do such a collection in the post lock down environment we find ourselves in. After a bit of careful research we made contact with a Rotary Club in Beirut, who were already running a food bank out there and were ideally suited to provide support where appropriate. Plus, with a bit of ingenuity involving screwing collecting buckets to workbenches so that we could be suitably distanced from any prospective donators, a lot of hand gel and some disinfectant wipes we managed to mount a street collection in early September. At this point in time we do not know exactly how successful the collection was because the money raised is in quarantine for 72 hours, but we are confident that several hundred pounds was raised. Finance and Legal Eastleigh Borough businesses reminded to apply for non-repayable government grants

Eastleigh Borough Council is reminding business rate payers in the Borough to apply for the non-repayable Business Rates Grant before the 28 August deadline. Businesses that are eligible could receive a £10k or £25k grant and not required to pay it back, which is the case with some of the loan schemes. The grant is aimed to help businesses affected by the pandemic and companies will receive varying amounts depending on their size. If a company is in receipt of Small Business Rate Relief or is a business in retail, hospitality or the leisure sector and have a Rateable Value of £51,000 or less, they can complete the form to be assessed for eligibility for any grants or reliefs. Business rate payers in Eastleigh Borough are being urged to apply for the Business Rates Grant if they are eligible and have not yet received any financial support during the coronavirus pandemic, as the government has now extended the deadline to 28 August. During the coronavirus pandemic Eastleigh Borough Council has already paid out over £17.5 million to 1,553 businesses across the Borough through the Business Rates Grants as well as other government funded schemes including the discretionary grant.

46

A total of £16,665,000 has been paid through the Business Rates Grant to 1,263 companies and a total of £968,500 was paid to 298 businesses through the Discretionary Grants scheme. The Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy Councillor Derek Pretty said: “We want to remind our business community that the Business Rates Grant is a nonrepayable grant. While some of the financial support being offered to businesses is given as a loan that would need to be repaid, these grants are given to businesses and repayment is not required. Our team has worked extremely hard over the last few months and we hope to help more businesses with the remaining funds.” To be eligible businesses must pay Nondomestic Rates, have a rateable value below £51,000 and be in the qualifying sector. Businesses can complete an online form here https://bit.ly/3bTlQ2C to find out if they are entitled to receive the grants or contact economic.development@eastleigh.gov.uk The Economy Team will process the applications for these grants and let business owners know if they have been successful.

Whats On - Music WICKHAM FESTIVAL RECEIVES CROWDFUNDING BOOST

Wickham Festival have extended the deadline to their hugely successful crowdfunding campaign which has raised almost £30,000 to safeguard their future. The hugely popular annual event was postponed earlier this month in line with Government guidelines in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The decision cost organisers close to six figures and might have left an uncertain future but for the generosity of their loyal fans who have rallied round. So far they have donated more than £26,000 and with the deadline, it looks certain to reach their target. Organiser Peter Chegwyn said: “We are incredibly grateful to all those who have contributed any amount, big or small – and to all those who have rolled their tickets over to next year.

“It has made a huge difference to us and it has helped to secure the festival’s future. We are absolutely overwhelmed by the response and with five days still to go, we are confident of passing the £30,000 target. “Like every other festival we have been hit hard by the lockdown and we have not received a penny in funding from the Government support schemes. We have had to rely on the generosity of our audience. “The postponement meant we lost £50,000 in non-recoverable costs as well as having to give out refunds to those who cannot make the August 5-8 dates next year. “Thankfully 90% of purchasers have kept their tickets for next year when Van Morrison, the Waterboys, the SAS Band and almost all our other acts will still be appearing. “It does sum up our loyal following. People come back year after year because of the unique atmosphere and top quality entertainment so I am not surprised they are helping us through this crisis but I am still very humbled by their support. “It shows the confidence they have in us as well as their affection for a unique event but it says a lot about the audience we attract. Music - New Releases GIANT ROOKS 'Rookery' Released 28th August, EMI Records In 2015, singer Frederik Rabe, guitarist Finn Schwieters, bassist Luca Goettner, keyboardist Jonathan Wischniowski, and drummer Finn Thomas founded Giant Rooks. Since those early days they’ve already come a long way. They won numerous awards in their native Germany, built up a seven-figure monthly listenership on Spotify, and have sold out concerts everywhere from Rome to Paris to Manchester. In Germany, they're already filling venues other artists need years to fill. They took their time with their debut, having played more than 350 shows in recent years, and this has given them the time and space to refine their own sound. The band’s “Rookery World Tour” has been rescheduled for 2021.

SNOW PATROL & THE SATURDAY SONGWRITERS 'Fireside Sessions EP'

Released 21st August, Polydor Records Speaking about how The Fireside Sessions came about, frontman Gary Lightbody says, “During lockdown I wrote a song each Saturday on Instagram Live. People from all over the world participated and each week there was 4 or 5 thousand people involved over the course of the hour: The Saturday Songwriters. They would suggest chords and lyrics and I would put them all together and add in a few of my own where appropriate but my unwritten rule was that there would be lyrics from a Saturday Songwriter in each line of the song. We did it for 11 weeks and wrote 12 songs together. It was a lot of fun.”

ANOTHER SKY 'I Slept On The Floor' - Released 7th August,

Fiction Records Since the release of their debut single in 2018, Another Sky have flawlessly merged hardhitting, difficult topics with unparalleled cinematic sounds. Catrin Vincent’s poetic rage has been titular in Another Sky’s story, grappling with the topics of toxic relationships, childhood trauma, systematic elitism, Brexit Britain, the rise of Donald Trump and much more. However, the band’s debut album is never didactic; it’s more of a personal diary, with a tentatively hopeful outlook. contactus@loopmagazine.net Magazine 55

SEA GIRLS 'Open Up Your Head' - Released 14th August, Polydor

Records After taking 2019 by the scruff of the neck and making it their own, as well as a blistering trajectory in 2020, Sea Girls have come out all guns blazing with their emotionally charged, deeply personal, hook laden debut album Open Up Your Head. Featuring fourteen doses of memorable jagged guitar-pop brilliance, the LP was produced by Larry Hibbitt in London. Open Up Your Head is available in special coloured vinyl, limited edition picture disc, CD, cassette and digital.

All previously purchased + upgraded tickets remain valid for London 02 Academy Brixton, Glasgow Barrowland, Manchester Academy 1 and Birmingham 02 Institute – please keep hold of tickets. Sold Out Intimate Album Launch shows for Nov 20 and Jan 21 remain unchanged and tickets remain valid. Frontman Henry Camamile says of the tour and the band’s recent album success; “We started this band because we all love music. No way did we expect to have so many amazing people connect with our debut record and for it to enter the album charts at Number 3. We are so grateful and touched. Being amongst other guitar music in the Top 10 makes us smile and feels like it definitely ain’t dead. It’s been a lifeline that we could still chat to our fans and release music during lockdown. We want to be playing shows as soon as possible but it looks like it is still not gonna be safe to do this for the big dates on our Autumn tour. In consultation with our team, we have rescheduled the November dates to April 2021. It will come around soon and we'll make up for it at these shows.” With album Open Up Your Head, the band’s songwriting has elevated, with Henry stepping into the spotlight as a genuine storyteller for his generation. The album is an explosion of joyous indie rock held together to reflect topics such as his previous traumatic head injury, the anxiety that ensued, and resulting adolescent vices. In accessing those darkest and least comfortable parts of himself, the record becomes one of hope for the band and fans alike. Listen to album fan favourite ‘Lie To Me’ Here

With their unique blend of perfect pop rock'n'roll, outrageous flamboyance and pure fun, and no less than 23 Top-20 singles of which 6 were No-1 smash hits...plus 6 smash albums, Slade have become a firm favourite in the hearts of pop fans all over the world. SLADE'S chart career has spanned 6 decades and their enduring songs “Far Far Away”, "Cum On Feel The Noize" and "Coz I Luv You" are still featured today in TV commercials for some of the World’s biggest companies. SLADE first hit the road in 1966, touring throughout Great Britain and Europe and becoming a regular concert attraction. Joining forces with the former Animals bass guitarist and Jimi Hendrix Experience manager, Chas Chandler, Slade achieved their first chart hit in May 1971 with the Bobby Marchan song "Get Down And Get With It" then, released in October of the same year "Coz I Luv You" was the band’s first No-1 and a huge hit across Europe.

Throughout the seventies, Slade became one of Europe's biggest bands, touring and recording continually and making regular trips to America, Japan and other parts of the world. Slade's catalogue of hits are synonymous with the era:- "Take Me Bak 'Ome", "Mama We'er All Crazee Now", "Cum On Feel The Noize", "Gudbye T' Jane", along with the many others provided a soundtrack to the Glam Generation and are still today, heavily featured on any retrospective of the time. At the beginning of the eighties, Slade were invited to appear at the Reading Rock Festival, a massive annual event which attracted over 100,000 people. They literally stole the show, giving some of the world’s biggest rock bands a serious run for their money whilst kindling new interest from a whole new audience. As a result, the band signed a new record deal and unleashed the anthem "We'll Bring The House Down", which reached the Top-10 in the UK in January 1981. Slade were back! A second successful appearance at Castle Donnington in 1981, before a crowd of over 60,000 people, consolidated the bands position and paved the way for the single "Lock Up Your Daughters", and the album "Til Deaf Do Us Part". While Slade were busy in the UK releasing the massive hit "My Oh My" to huge acclaim, LA metal band Quiet Riot were spreading the word Stateside with their version of "Cum On Feel The Noize", which proved so successful that they followed it up with "Mama Weer All Crazee Now". Throughout the start of the eighties Slade toured and recorded due to them once again being a major force in British pop'n'rock. The early nineties saw the bands "Radio Wall Of Sound" hit the UK Top-30 and thereby give Slade a solid 30 year chart run! In 1991, due to the continual demand from around the world, founder Slade members Dave Hill and Don Powell decided to return to touring by playing a few select dates in Europe prior to embarking on what turned out to be a very successful two month tour of Australia. SLADE have continued to tour the world. They are firm favourites on the lucrative German festival scene and undertake an annual UK "Merry Christmas Everybody" tour in December. They have a huge following of fans and regularly play concert dates in Germany, Poland, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Spain & France.
