The SMOT “Sustainable Mediterranean Old Towns” project aims to contribute to the risk factors reduction for the environment through the development of urban waste management actions in the Medinas around of the Mediterranean Sea. It intends to participate to thedefinition of sustainable solutions in waste management within historic cities centers/medinas. The project partnership, composed of 9 organizations from Egypt, Jordan, Italy, Tunisia and Spain, is coordinated by the municipal company “SADECO” of Córdoba (Spain). The project “Sustainable Mediterranean Old Towns” total budget is1.324.506 € and it is financed, for an amount of 1.192.055 € (90%), by the European Union through the ENPI CBC Mediterranean Sea Basin Programme (European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument). What is the 2007-2013 ENPI CBC Mediterranean Sea Basin Programme?
The 2007-2013 ENPI CBC Mediterranean Sea Basin Program is a multilateral Cross-Border Cooperation initiative funded by the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI). The Program objective is to promote the sustainable and harmonious cooperation process at the Mediterranean Basin level by dealing This publication has been produced with the financial with the common challenges and enhancing its endogenous assistance of the European Union under the ENPI CBC potential. It finances cooperation projects as a contribution to the Mediterranean Sea Basin Program. economic, social, environmental and cultural development of the Mediterranean region. Partners Presentation We are 9 partners and 2 associates in SMOT project. In each newsletter 2 of them will be presented: SADECO Sanitation of Córdoba, SA (Sadeco) is a public Company was established by the Municipality of Cordoba on September 24, 1986 with a public service in the city of Córdoba. Its main objective is the management of the urban environment. The company is structured attending to the services provided: urban waste collection, treatment and final disposal of waste, recycling and preparation of compost, cleaning of streets, schools and municipal public buildings, control of pests, technical services and maintenance and educational services.
University of Jordan The University of Jordan is both a modern as well as old institution of Higher Education in Jordan. Established in 1962, the University has, since then, applied itself to the advancement of knowledge no less than to its dissemination. In its capacity as a comprehensive teaching, research and communityservice institution, the University of Jordan enables its students to choose from a wide range of programs- more than 3500 different courses are offered by some 18 faculties.
Kick-off Meeting Al-Salt (Jordan), 4-6 March 2014 Nine partners from five countries are collaborating in the project: Tunisia, with the Medina of Sfax, Spain, with the Medina of Cordoba, Italy, with the city of Ragusa, Jordan, with the city of Al-Salt, and Egypt, with the city of Alexandria. In addition, academic and administrative institutions with the support of local economic and social actors of these countries participate actively in this project. www.smotproject.eu
The kick-off meeting was organized from 4 to 6 March 2014, by the municipality of Al-Salt in Jordan. The meeting brought together about 50 participants from the five cities with historic centers “Medinas”. The participants established the future actions for the next 2 years.
Training Seminar Rome (Italy), 9-10 April 2014 SADECO, as a beneficiary of SMOT project, has been invited to a training seminar that will be held in Rome on Wednesday, 9 April 2014. During this meeting, the Joint Managing Authorityand the Joint Technical Secretariat provide the participants with key information on project implementation. Link..

“Towards a European Circular Economy” conference Rome (Italy), 21-23 April 2014 Project SMOT “Sustainable Mediterranean Old Towns” showed the waste management state-of-theart in the Med regions during the conference Towards a European Circular Economy: a three-days environmental conference held in Rome from the 21st to the 23rd May, gathering together many relevant international experts in the field of sustainable waste management and representatives of both local authorities and international institutions.
The project ZeroWaste Pro organized the session of the 22nd May within this international conference and SMOT was invited to debate on waste prevention and sustainable management: good practices were exchanged and compared. Link..

Al-Salt and Madaba Study visit The days 4th, 5th and 6th March 2014, SMOT kick-off meeting was held in Jordan. Study visits for AlSaltand Madaba medinas and for AlSalt and Madaba landfills were scheduled.
In the first part of the visit to Al-Salt medina the participants visited AlHamam street, located at the historical center of Al-Salt city, where the pilot solutions of the project will beimplemented.

In the second part the participants visited Al-Hamra landfill, the place where the collected waste from AlBalqa are a municipalities is transferred. The third day of the kick-off meeting, a study visit was made to Madaba city, where the participants visited the landfill, where Mr. Basem Al-Bashat gave an explanation about the landfill main data: area, amounts of waste collection, mechanisms for waste disposals. Then a tour was made into the landfill itself to see in situ how thewaste is transferred and disposed. The participants had also thechance to visit the medina of Madaba and check the state of wastedeposit and collection there.
This a project funded by the European Union under the ENPI CBC Mediterranean Sea Basin Programme.
