July 28 is World Hepatitis Day. The theme of this year is to Eliminate Hepatitis. According to the World Health Organization, in 2015 “325 million people were living with chronic hepatitis infections worldwide.” Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, which comes in a variety of different forms. Each form is spread and treated differently. Many of the people who have chronic viral hepatitis do not know they have it. Many forms of hepatitis can be transmitted by blood, and can be related to drug use. According to TIP 53, “3-11% of people who inject drugs have chronic hepatitis B;” additionally, those that inject drugs are more likely to contract hepatitis C than HIV. Although there is a hepatitis B vaccine, the only way to avoid hepatitis C is by avoiding contact with contaminated blood. More than 1.3 million people die every year from viral hepatitis. It is considered a “global epidemic that can affect millions of people without them even being aware” of it. More than 80% of people with hepatitis B and C are unaware of their illness.
