WHAT WE’RE
ALL ABOUT 4moms is a special place. We accomplish great things and have a great time doing it. We have resisted putting words to things like our mission and our values and our culture. We’re either innovative or we’re not. We’re either a great place to work or we’re not. Anyone can write platitudes but writing them doesn’t make them true. It’s one of those areas where actions speak louder so words haven’t been our priority. However, as we grow, it’s important that we don’t lose our way. So we’ve tried to put down words that capture what we are, not some theoretical ideal of what we’d like to be. Hopefully these words will be a reminder to our team, instructional to anyone joining us, and informational to anyone wanting to learn more about who we are. With diligent effort these ideals can endure and together we can build a company that we’re all really proud of. Life is too short to do anything less.

HOW WE GOT STARTED In 2005, Rob Daley and Henry Thorne met for lunch. Six hours later, they’d decided to form a company. Rob’s business acumen, Henry’s engineering expertise, and a shared conviction that increasingly inexpensive electronics could add value in static product categories gave them confidence. Not long after, a focus group of four moms gave them insights, ideas, and a name for their company. From that first Digital Spout Cover to the mamaRoo® infant seat to the origami® stroller and more, 4moms’ products are innovative, elegant, and helpful to parents everywhere.

IT’S JUST A BATH OF WONDERFUL IDEAS AROUND HERE. It starts with a clarity in understanding the customer, really, really listening and understanding, then adding a huge dose of open creativity to generate genuinely new things and crafting them so well they can’t be described as anything other than marvelous. Then we throw a bunch of love and hugs into the packaging, website, and other contact and hope everyone outside the company feels the same excitement and passion we do.

When I was asked if I wanted to join the 4moms team, I thought, “How can I pass this up? This could be a chance of a lifetime…newer company, career potential, really cool-looking products with awesome technology!” But during my first few days of working here, I quickly realized that it wasn’t only the products or the career potential that made coming to 4moms a great opportunity. The REAL chance of a lifetime is working with the incredibly talented people behind the products: from the engineers and designers who make these amazing products to the creative people who market and sell to our customers. From the people who get the products out to customers, and the people who support the customers when something’s not working right. The software team who innovates our web applications and the IT, accounting and company leadership who help each of us and keep the business moving forward.

I’ve worked many places throughout my life. Always making sure to find some fun aspect for the job I was doing. After all, let’s face it, most of us have to work and if that’s the case then make sure you are having some fun or what’s the point? Before coming to 4moms I had the pleasure of working with some of the people in the company on a consulting basis and was able to immediately tell that this would be a fun place to work. You are given the freedom to invent, the freedom to succeed, and the freedom to fail. Working daily with intelligent, passionate, and innovative people makes every day exciting and interesting. When I first started at 4moms it was a culture shock, because I came from a very traditional company. I was worried that the management structure would be a little too laid back, the polar opposite of what I was used to. Fortunately, at 4moms I feel like I have a direct impact on the company with every milestone I reach; I don’t feel like my hard work slips through the cracks, I feel appreciated. Management is open and communicative, so I never feel like they are trying to hide anything (whether good or bad) from the rest of the employees. In 2006, when I was on maternity leave from the robotics Ph.D. program at CMU, I got an e-mail about a local startup that wanted to apply robotics technology to baby products. At the time, I thought it sounded like my dream job. Little did I realize just how amazing it would be. Sure, I’ve learned so much getting to work alongside fabulously talented and passionate businessmen, engineers, and designers. And I’m always amazed and humbled to participate in turning our ideas into real products that make a difference in the lives of families around the world.
BUT MOST OF ALL, I LOVE COMING TO WORK EACH DAY TO SOLVE NEW CHALLENGES WITH A TEAM THAT I TRUST AND RESPECT. In case you can’t tell, it’s hard for me to keep my enthusiasm to myself, which is how I recruited our best man and my sister to the team. I had no idea, when I first read that fateful e-mail, how much 4moms would become part of my life and the 4moms team would become part of my family, but I can’t imagine being anywhere else.

My first week, I would meet a new person and walk away with a bucket full of work. All the while, the smile on my face grew and grew. I have never accrued more work (and trust, camaraderie, and support) at any other company like I have here. While I have previously seen co-workers mope and complain with workloads much lighter, everyone at 4moms carries on with a smile and - perhaps the most important part - a sense of purpose.
