For

Become a Key Leader If you are a 4-H leader who is passionate and knowledgeable about the 4-H program, you may want to consider becoming a Key Leader. Each Key Leader acts as the ‘go-to person’ within a district to offer support, help out and answer questions that others may have. They are dedicated and experienced leaders themselves who are well versed in club, committee and council operations. Key Leaders strive for the success of the 4-H program and those within it. For more information or if you are interested in pursuing this opportunity, contact your district council or Regional 4-H Specialist. Ongoing

It’s Club Registration Time! Welcome to the 2016/2017 club year! The following are a few tips that will help make club registration a breeze! • Each General Leader and Club registrar will receive an email with their unique 4-H Alberta Online Registration System Username and Password. New General leaders or Club Registrars should contact the 4-H Registrar at 4hregistrar@gov.ab.ca. • At the first club gathering, each member, leader and volunteer will fill out the 4-H Alberta Registration Information Forms. These are available at www.4h.ab.ca and this information is important when registering your club. • Have your club’s banking information handy as you’ll be required to provide it to receive sponsor funding. • In order to receive your club supplies, your club must submit payment for registration. Payment can be submitted by credit card online or on the phone, or a cheque made out to the 4-H Foundation of Alberta. You can order supplies immediately after paying or wait until your club is approved by your 4-H specialist. • Visit www.4h.ab.ca for more information and to access the Online Registration System tutorials which will walk you through Logging In, Changing Your Password and Leader Screening. Your Regional 4-H Specialist or the 4-H Registrar is available to help you through the online registration process.

4-H Canada Club to Club Exchanges

Volunteer at the 6th annual 4-H Alberta Corporate Partnerships Appreciation Evening Sponsors play an integral role in 4-H and this is our chance to say thank you. Once again, the 4-H Foundation of Alberta would like to invite clubs, leaders, parents and members to participate in the sixth annual Corporate Partnerships Appreciation Evening. Participants will be treated to a delicious meal where they will have the chance to mingle with sponsors, share their 4-H experience and demonstrate the value and benefits of the program. The 4-H Foundation of Alberta is looking for volunteers to help in the following areas:

Club Showcase Display (10 Club Spots) Participating clubs will set up a display demonstrating the programs and opportunities their club has to offer.

Meet new people, travel to new places and experience Canada like you never have before. Travel across the country as part of a group of 10 and tour around the area with a local 4-H group. Members aged 1217 will have the chance to learn about a different part of the country, experience 4-H in another province and make incredible friendships. For the second half of the exchange, the travelers will become the hosts, putting their hometowns on display and showing their guests the local sites.

Sponsor Engagement (Five 4-H members)

Summer 2017 Canada-wide

Club Presentation (One 4-H Club)

4-H Canada Going Global Service Learning In the summer of 2016, 4-H Canada partnered with 4-H Ghana on a new community service learning program. This year, for the first time, 4-H Canada will be hosting 4-H youth delegates from Ghana and is looking for 4-H communities to help. The community must propose a service project to engage the youth and must be able to host up to 10 delegates from Ghana. For more information, contact Erin Smith at esmith@4-h-canada.ca.

Energetic 4-H members are needed to greet sponsors when they come through the door, show them around and ensure they are immersed in 4-H.

Table Hosts (25-30 Members, Leaders and Parent Volunteers) Two 4-H volunteers will be assigned to each table to ensure there is always a 4-Her ready to engage with sponsors.

One club will be a part of the Key Speakers Presentation, talking about the opportunities their club offers and the value of 4-H.

Take Down As many volunteers as possible are needed to assist with the clean up after the event. If you or your club is interested in participating, please contact Rae-Lee Erickson at Erickson@4hab.com. November 3

Helping Hands for the Holidays Christmas is the season of giving and what better way to give than to put a smile on a child’s face. Helping Hands for the Holidays is a province wide toy drive for Ronald McDonald Houses throughout Alberta. Simply collect new and unwrapped toys and drop them off at your regional 4-H office where the 4-H Ambassadors will hand deliver them to Ronald McDonald Houses. December, 2016

Host an International Delegate Show the world Alberta hospitality by hosting a 4-H exchange student or chaperone this summer. Each year, 4-H Alberta hosts students from Japan and Finland who come to Canada to improve their English, experience a new culture and learn about our agricultural practices. As host, there is no expectation that you tour them around but rather that you welcome them into your family with open arms and give them a taste of what it is to live in Alberta. Summer 2017

Nominate 4-H Alberta’s Best for the Golden Clover Award Do you know an individual or group who has made a big contribution to 4-H in Alberta? Nominate them for an award! This contribution may have been an innovative idea, project, activity or event that has made a significant difference at a club, district, regional or provincial level. Any 4-Her can complete the nomination by submitting a Golden Clover nomination form along with three letters of support to council@4hab.com by November 15.

Nominate YOUR Leader for the National Volunteer Leader of the Year Award Volunteer leaders are an integral part of the 4-H program. They teach members the skills they need to succeed and empower them to affect positive change in the world around them. One leader from every province has the chance to win $100 cash and a pizza party for their club to celebrate. A $1,000 cash prize is also up for grabs for the national winner as well as a trip to Ottawa, Ontario for 4-H Canada’s 2017 Annual General Meeting. Show your appreciation and nominate your leader for the National Volunteer Leader of the Year award. Submit your nominations at apply.4-h-canada.ca by January 31.

4-H Canada Science Fair Explore, experiment, discover and take part in the 2nd annual 4-H Canada Science Fair. Either individually or in partners, members in grades 7 to 12 can plan, research, complete and submit science projects to be judged. As for a topic, the sky is the limit! Ask yourself, “Why?”, “What?”, or “How?” and let your curiosity lead you on a path of discovery.

Virtual Round The first round of the competition will be conducted online. Instead of creating displays, members will instead submit PowerPoint presentations through the online portal that will be judged virtually. Resources and mentors are available to assist members with their project prior to the January deadline. Members can visit 4-h-canada. ca/4HCanadaScienceFair to register and find online resources. In January 2017, up to 35 finalists from the virtual round will be chosen to compete in the Semi-Finalist Round. September 1- Online January 16

Semi-Finalist Round Following the Virtual Round, up to 35 finalists will qualify to compete in the Semi-Finalist Round. Qualifiers will have the opportunity to travel to compete in an in-person science fair where they will present their project to judges, meet other 4-Hers and participate in various science related activities. The 4-Hers with the winning projects will have the opportunity to travel to Regina, Saskatchewan to compete in the Canada-Wide Science Festival from May 14-20, 2017. March 2-5

Location TBA

Canadian Young Speakers for Agriculture (CYSA) Every year, youth from across the country converge at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto for CYSA to share their passion for agriculture and farming. Competitors must prepare a 5-7 minute speech surrounding one of the five topics provided. The winner of the 4-H Alberta Provincial Communications Competition will be sent to represent the province at the CYSA competition. November 5

Toronto, Ontario

Provincial Carcass Competition With the growing popularity of the carcass beef project, this year, members will have the opportunity to compete in a provincewide carcass competition. Members select and feed a beef animal to the finished weight, as they would a live market beef project, however the animal is judged live and on the rail providing members with an additional learning opportunity. Members’ carcass project animals will be slaughtered at one of several designated facilities across the province and judged by the same judges for consistency. The winners will be announced at 4-H Fever weekend. December 1

Provincial Consumer Decision Making Competition Every day, we are faced with countless decisions such as what to eat, wear, listen to, and many more. Consumer Decision Making helps 4-H members learn about what to consider when purchasing consumer items so that they can make more educated decisions. Members will also have the opportunity to explain their choices.

October 28-30 Alberta 4-H Centre

Become a Key Member Becoming a Key Member is the first step of many for senior members who want to go above and beyond the call of duty. As a Key Member, you will help create the 4-H member experience by sharing your time and insight with 4-Hers and clubs in your district. This is a leadership role that goes beyond the club and allows you to get more involved with other clubs within the district. This role allows senior members to take their 4-H experience to the next level while helping other members see and embrace all that 4-H is. For more information on becoming a Key Member, talk to your district council or Regional 4-H Specialist. October 14 Districts throughout Alberta

17 Teen Track Join 4-H members from across Alberta and the western United States for the experience of a life time. For the first time, Teen Track is coming to Canada and you don’t want to miss out. Formerly Senior Members’ Conference, Teen Track will combine with Leaders’ Conference as part of the Western Regional Leaders’ Forum (WRLF) for four days of sessions, speakers and fun. Senior members have lots of changes coming their way as they transition into life after high school. Teen Track is a chance for members to prepare for life after high school while meeting and connecting with other senior members who are in the same position as them. Members will also have the chance to participate in sessions with the international leaders attending WRLF. March 16-19, 2017 Shaw Conference Centre, Edmonton

Western Canadian Judging Competition Put your judging skills to the test at the 29th annual Western Canadian Judging Competition. Become a better, more efficient decision maker by keenly observing, analyzing and comparing various animals or items. In teams of four, participants will compete against other 4-H and intercollegiate teams to judge a number of livestock and crop classes. March 10, 2017 Lakeland College, Vermilion

Going Global Exchanges Go overseas and experience a different culture as part of the 4-H Going Global Exchange program. Learn about sustainable agriculture practices, food security and international farming all while seeing the sights of the country. This is an excellent opportunity for 4-H members and recent alumni, aged 18-25, to expand their global perspective and become immersed in a different culture. Though the 2017 destinations have not yet been confirmed, past destinations have included Taiwan, Finland, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and the UK. Members will travel in June and July and host visiting delegates upon their return the same summer. Summer 2017

Destinations TBA

4-H Alberta Finland Exchange Experience a new country, unique culture and international 4-H on the 4-H Alberta Finland Exchange. June/July, 2017 Finland

4-H Alberta Japanese Exchanges Immerse yourself in a new culture and learn a new language overseas in Japan. These unique 4-H Alberta exchanges partner each 4-H member with a family in Japan where they will gain a new cultural understanding and an increased world-view. Please note that participating in both of these exchanges is also an option. 4-H Alberta is also pleased to host 10 Japanese students each year and is looking for host families for each student and chaperone.

Nihongo (language) Exchange The Nihongo Exchange is a three-week program in Tokyo, Japan where 4-H members will be fully immersed in the Japanese language. Throughout their time, the students will attend Japanese classes and stay with a host family where they will be able to practice the language in an everyday setting. June/July, 2017

Tokyo, Japan

Cultural Exchange This is a month long exchange where 4-H members will have the opportunity to live with a Japanese family and experience firsthand their culture and way of life. Not only will members learn a lot about the country, they will gain lifelong friendships and amazing memories. July/August, 2017

18 Selections Every 4-H member has the potential to do great things and through the 4-H program, we help them try and reach that potential. The Selections program is one of those ways in which we provide members with the keys to ensure their own success and the success of those around them. Since 1957, Selections has been one of the premier learning and networking opportunities for Alberta 4-H members with various informative sessions and speakers. In 2017, the program will be focused on preparing for the future with sessions geared towards moving out, budgeting money and choosing a career path. At the end of the short program, the newest Alberta Ambassadors and the Premier’s Award winner will be selected and a number of travel opportunities will be awarded. The trip winners, Alberta ambassadors and Premier’s Award winner all play a very large role in the success of the 4-H program through engaging with other members, getting involved in their communities and demonstrating the benefits of 4-H. Date and Location TBA

Be named the 2017 Premier’s Award Recipient

USA National 4-H Members Conference

Since the first Premier’s Award was presented in 1964, one senior 4-H member is honoured with this prestigious recognition each year. This is the highest honour that an Alberta 4-H member can receive, recognizing exceptional communication and leadership skills, as well as a strong dedication to their own personal growth and the growth of the 4-H program. The Premier’s Award recipient represents 4-H on a provincial level, attending and speaking at various events, engaging with 4-Hers and even meeting with the Premier of Alberta.

One Alberta 4-H delegate will have the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C for the premiere civic engagement opportunity for 4-H members around the world. Not only will they learn and refine important skills, they will have the chance to practice them in a real world setting. In small groups, attendees will put together a presentation based on an important societal topic. These briefings will then be presented to U.S. federal officials. It isn’t all work however as delegates will also tour Washington, seeing important political sites including the Lincoln Memorial and Capitol Hill.

Become an Ambassador

March or April 2018

Each year at the Selections program, 14 new members join the ranks of the 4-H Alberta Ambassadors. Two senior members from each region are selected for a two year term where they will promote 4-H Alberta through programs, speaking at events and public engagement. To be selected as an Ambassador, members are judged on their diary points, their engagement in a group setting and their knowledge of agriculture, current events and the 4-H program itself. Having experienced first-hand much of what 4-H Alberta has to offer, these senior members or recent alumni are the perfect spokespeople for 4-H Alberta.

4-H Canada Citizenship Congress The 46th annual 4-H Canada Citizenship Congress will once again prove a challenging but inspiring opportunity for delegates across the country. Participants will get to experience government procedure up close and personal while simultaneously developing communication skills and expanding their horizons. Throughout the week, members will engage in workshops and sessions that will culminate into the annual debate. Attendees will learn the skills necessary to construct insightful arguments, be persuasive and effectively convey their message through hands on sessions and activities. Throughout the trip, members will also have the opportunity to explore Ottawa, Parliament Hill and learn more about Canada. April or May 2018

You will participate in many activities focused on leadership development, civic engagement and so much more. Along with the four day conference, there is also the possibility of extending the trip with a host family stay. July 2017 Humboldt State University, Arcata, California

Agriculture Development Tour Join 21 other 4-Hers on the road trip of a life time through northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories. If you like the outdoors and agriculture, this is the trip for you as 4-Hers will have the chance to see beautiful landscapes, stop at various agricultural centres and camp along the way. By the end of the trip, you will also have learned a lot about yourself and made incredible friendships with your travel companions. This year’s route and ultimate destination have yet to be determined but more information will be made available closer to Selections. Summer 2017

Christine Suominen 2016 Premier’s Award Recipient Like many 4-Hers, Christine began her 4-H career at nine years old after her parents brought her to her first meeting. In her hometown of Lacombe, Christine spent nine years in the East Lacombe 4-H Beef Club where she not only participated in the beef project but became a mentor and role model to many of the club’s younger members. After graduating high school and moving to Lethbridge for university, her 4-H involvement didn’t end as she joined the Kreative Kidz 4-H Multi Club, taking part in the knitting and sports projects. Christine says her favourite part of 4-H is meeting new people

from all over the province but she also loves helping younger members with their projects. Through her many years in 4-H, Christine says she has gained many important skills that she hopes to pass onto other 4-Hers. She hopes to take advantage of her time as a Premier’s Award Recipient and Ambassador by giving back and improving the program for the future. Christine is currently in her second year of the Agricultural Biotechnology program at the University of Lethbridge. Watch for Christine at various events in the coming months!
