Portsmouth Economic Development

PORTSMOUTH IS ON THE MOVE ... P ortsmouth is on the move and wants the world to know it; business, retail, tourism, residential movement – Portsmouth is taking off, and we want your business to come see why you should become a part of our success story. This year in business, the big story is the reopening of Portsmouth Marine Terminal (PMT) for container traffic. As a 287-acre multi-purpose terminal, PMT will handle 100,000 containers annually and add significant shipping muscle to the Virginia Port Authority’s already powerful Portsmouth-based Virginia International Gateway terminal, giving the city two of the best terminals for global business commerce and international trade in the United States. Retail investment is moving up as well, with the new $31.5 million, 175,000 square foot Midtown Marketplace, anchored by the region’s second Kroger Marketplace, T.J. Maxx, Hibbett Sporting Goods, and other nationally and locally known retailers and restaurants. In our historic Downtown, eclectic galleries, independent restaurants, funky shops and new small businesses compliment the major law firms, government offices, and the U.S. Coast Guard’s Atlantic and Fifth District Commands that have been mainstays here. Come visit our world-class Children’s Museum of Virginia and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, grab dinner and a movie at the

historic Commodore Theatre, tour Olde Towne, or go see international and national performers at the 6,500 seat nTelos Pavilion – all within walking distance! We want new residents to move to Portsmouth, and in 2014, that message was heard and the market responded with phenomenal new and planned residential developments. Of note - the $17.0 million, 140-unit The Quarters at Park View, opened this year. Plans are underway for the $17.1 million, 134-unit Harbor Vista, while the $9.2 million, 67-unit Sterling Court, and the $6.3 million, 46-unit Kings Court are both under construction. Portsmouth is a great place to live – for any lifestyle you are looking for! Finally, Portsmouth is pleased to announce another move this year – Charles E. “Chuck” Rigney has joined the Portsmouth Economic Development team as Director. Rigney, well-known in economic development circles, is excited to be joining Mallory C. Kahler, Assistant Director, and Toi M. Wilson, Business Development Manager, and the entire City team, in keeping Portsmouth moving in 2015 and beyond. Follow Portsmouth on Twitter (EconDev_PortsVa), check out our website (www.portsmouthvaed.com), email Chuck (rigneyc@portsmouthva.gov), or call our offices (757) 393-8804. ustomer Magnetism (CM) is a full-service digital marketing agency based out of Virginia Beach. Founded in 2000, the company has continuously grown over the past 14 years into a fun, hard-working, and passionate team. Everyone at CM has one common goal: the clients’ success. It takes a lot of hard work to stay at the top of their industry, which makes the ambition and creative energy fueling each of their team members crucial to their own success. Their staff is consistently researching, learning, and coming up with creative approaches and ideas—not to mention staying on top of the ever-changing landscape of digital marketing—to provide their clients with totally specialized online marketing campaigns. Customer Magnetism is a place where employees want to come to work every day because they have found the right balance of working hard and having fun. The office itself is designed to foster creativity and communication, where employees roll their chairs around the office to chat and brainstorm. To keep at the top of their game, the whole team meets weekly to smear some bagels with cream cheese before a weekly training session and group discussion. It also helps that the executive team sets a laidback example, whether by sporting shorts in the dead of winter, or ending the day with a friendly-yet-competitive game of Kan Jam. One of Customer Magnetism’s core values is to appreciate employees and reward them for their hard work. Every month they set aside time to get out of the office and have a little fun. Whether it’s bowling, watching a movie, a pumpkin carving contest, or an all-out corn

hole tournament– all rules are thrown out the window. One employee commented, “While the goal is to get our minds off work, next thing you know, we’re collectively brainstorming a big idea for a client because you know what they say about all work and no play.” If you ask any one of the employees, they’ll tell you it’s fun to work at Customer Magnetism with comments such as: “We love what we do.” At a recent holiday party, the executive staff began to reflect on 2013 and then asked what the rest of the team thought of this year at CM. Nearly every employee spoke up to say that out of all the places they have ever worked, CM is the best place they have ever worked. Walking into work isn’t the same as walking into any other “job” – it’s walking into a place where you’re ready for the day and excited for the challenges and projects that come your way.

FinFit provides employers a program that serves as a valuable benefit for their employees by offering financial assistance when it’s needed most. By empowering staff with educational tools, resources, and guidance, FinFit helps create a future that is built upon a solid foundation of financial wellbeing. This combination of financial support and knowledge leads to a stable workforce that is free of unnecessary, stressful distractions, allowing them to be productive and fulfilled with peace of mind. It’s inevitable that unexpected financial hardships are bound to arise, and for many people who are living paycheck to paycheck, options are limited to predatory payday lenders or high-interest credit cards. FinFit provides a better alternative, proving that affordable, low-cost credit can be available to everyone. Established in 2008, FinFit was initially introduced as a solution to this dilemma, strictly serving as an employee loan program known as WorkersChoiceUSA. In that capacity, we assisted hundreds of companies and thousands of borrowers. Through direct interaction with customers, it quickly became clear that today’s workforce doesn’t only require financial stability, but can also benefit from an understanding of how to successfully prepare for unexpected financial difficulties. It was out of this realization that FinFit was developed. FinFit offers a full-service platform that doesn’t impart any cost or liability upon the employer. We equip employees with an alternative to high-cost credit, helping them to live comfortably within their means, while building a secure future through positive credit reporting. The FinFit process involves an assessment of each individual’s current financial situation. Members are then provided a unique, detailed financial action plan, which maps out specific tools and resources to attain stability in a world full of unexpected events. From budget tools and calculators, to tax tips and student loan

information, FinFit spans the range of financial planning elements that are critical to financial wellbeing. In addition, we have partnered with one of the nation’s largest providers of legal and identity theft protection, enabling us to offer its services at a reduced cost to members. David Kilby, president of FinFit, is a hands-on visionary who consistently empowers his staff to excel while holding true to the company’s core values, which include mutual respect, honesty, integrity, loyalty, and a commitment to work-life balance. He also instills his passion for giving back within the company. In addition to serving as President of Cerebral Palsy of Virginia, Mr. Kilby, encouraged the FinFit staff, to create their own charitable foundation, “It’s A Surprise!” On behalf of FinFit, it’s an honor to be named one of the “Best Places to Work” in 2014 by Virginia Business Magazine. It is a genuine tribute to our dedicated team, as well as our loyal customers. To learn more about FinFit, please visit www.finfit.com.

Virginia529 Turning college dreams into reality In 1994, a year of public college tuition in Virginia averaged $2,500; today, the cost is $6,800, a 171 percent increase. Fortunately for Virginia families, in 1994 the General Assembly created the Virginia529 College Savings Plan to help families prepay college tuition. 529 plans are state-sponsored, federal and state tax-advantaged programs which help people save for their future higher education expenses. In the 20 years since opening, Virginia529 has added three college savings programs and a scholarship program to its lineup. With more than $47 billion in assets under management and 2.3 million accounts, Virginia529 is the largest plan nationwide. That rank mirrors the agency’s mission to be a national leader in tax-advantaged college savings programs and to provide flexible and affordable options to families in Virginia and beyond. Virginia529’s size and reputation are helpful in advocating for state and federal legislative and governance issues relating to the 529 industry. The Virginia529 team is an active member of the College Savings Plans Network and the College Savings Foundation, of which Virginia529 CEO Mary Morris was recently elected chair. Located just outside Richmond in North Chesterfield, Virginia529 is a growing employer with more than 85 dedicated and diverse employees. “We recognize the need to remain competitive by attracting and retaining qualified employees,” explains HR director Debbie Allan. “As an independent state agency we can offer the best of both worlds: comprehensive benefits from the state plus additional advantages more often seen in private industry employment.” State benefits include flexible and affordable health insurance packages, long- and short-term disability coverage and paid time off with annual, sick, and personal leave options. Employees also enjoy a defined benefit pension program and an optional deferred compensation plan. 18

PROFILES IN BUSINESS

To encourage and reward employees for personally saving for higher education, the agency provides a dollarfor-dollar annual match up to $529 for contributions to the employee’s Virginia529 accounts. Employees may use the match towards their own educational needs or to benefit a loved one. Virginia529’s active presence in the community offers employees a change of pace from serving customers at the office or via phone. Venues range from sporting events to children’s festivals to PTA meetings. Morris sums up the relationship between Virginia 529’s business and its employee satisfaction goals: “Saving for college is a long-term, emotional and, at times, complex process. As a financial services provider with regulatory and investment responsibilities, we depend on our employees knowing all aspects of the 529 business so that we can keep our customers informed and offer them the best 529 options – and we want to offer the best employment situation possible to our team.” To learn more about Virginia529, its programs and its employment opportunities, visit Virginia529.com.

hy work at Divaris Real Estate? Ask any of the 30+ employees who’ve worked here for over a decade, or any of the eight who’ll celebrate 20 years with DRE in 2014. How does a company retain a loyal staff? Some stay for the entrepreneurial spirit fueling the eight regional offices. Many appreciate the variety of work in a full-service company. DRE leases, manages and sells all types of commercial real estate – from shopping centers, regional malls, office/ industrial buildings, to mixed-use new developments. In fact, since The Town Center of Virginia Beach groundbreaking in 2000, Divaris’ headquarters have had a front row seat to watch 17-city blocks rise from raw land. Leased and managed by Divaris, the iconic, city redefining Town Center brings thousands of office tenants with whom to network; shops to browse; and restaurants for summer patio happy hours and DRE’s annual Christmas lunch. The high retention rate may result from the open-door policy of CEO, Gerald Divaris; President, Michael Divaris; and COO, Sandy Cohen. Each is available to answer questions and to listen to suggestions from any DRE associate. Maybe it’s the comprehensive benefits package keeping so many devoted? The training of young leasing/sales associates? Annual recognition awards? Support of volunteerism? Pride in the highest percent of women agents and department heads? Accustomed to the latest industry technology? Certainly.

hat makes W. M. Jordan Company such a great place to work? The underlying philosophy of empowering people to be the best they can be is the foundation of success for the 56 year old commercial construction company. John Lawson, President and CEO, explains, “Give your employees the opportunity to develop and the freedom to make decisions, and they will succeed. Beyond technical, hands-on training, we prepare our staff to be equipped for work and life in the 21st century. By offering our employees knowledge, experience, know-how and accomplishment, it’s no surprise that job satisfaction and exceptional work follow.” How does the company accomplish its goals for developing 270 employees spread across four offices in two states? Claire McCleery, Director of Learning & Development, noted, “We offer programs in our Learning & Development Center ranging from how to incorporate Building Information Modeling effectively into a project to gardening classes and financial literacy programs. Our goal is to help people develop both personally and professionally, and to raise awareness whenever we can.” This attitude is exemplified in W. M. Jordan’s newest endeavor, a wellness program for all employees. Julie Sever, Wellness Director, brings 30 years of experience as a fitness professional and personal trainer to her role. Julie provides a full complement of exercise classes in on-site Wellness Centers at W. M. Jordan Company’s Newport News and Richmond offices. She offers a weekly newsletter full of health, wellness, and nutrition tips and travels to job sites to work with field staff. W. M. Jordan’s intern program exposes between twenty and thirty college students to the work and culture of the company each

summer. Many students work through the four year program to eventually join the firm as full-time employees. “While we produce quality buildings through our Construction Management and Design Build services, we are really in the people building business,” Lawson noted. “That is the secret to our success.”

Strength for Today, Growth for Tomorrow Eagle Ray Strategically Positioned for Continued Success with Kore Federal Acquisition Eagle Ray, Inc. is a woman-owned, strategic enterprise consulting and IT management services company on the rise. As a repeat Fantastic 50 recipient, this year Eagle Ray not only built on its strengths to achieve growth through its existing customer base, but also found a synergistic opportunity for continued growth through acquisition. The newly expanded Eagle Ray continues to deliver a full range of business and technical capabilities to solve critical programmatic and technical problems across the intelligence community, Departments of Defense and Homeland Security, and public sector finance agencies. In December 2013, Eagle Ray acquired Kore Federal, a woman-owned, IT services company supporting the Department of Homeland Security, Defense, and public sector financial clients. Kore Federal was founded by Andrea Stygar and Mike Woods in 2004. Andrea retired when the acquisition closed and Mike joined Eagle Ray as a Principal consultant. CEO Babs Doherty is justifiably optimistic about the acquisition, “We knew that Kore Federal shared our values on paper – mission focus, common sense and performance excellence – and now, in this new reality, we see a whole that truly is stronger than the sum of its parts.” And in this case, the “parts” make an impressive list: • A strengthened executive team, adding Gregory Williams as Chief Strategy Officer and Brian Stygar as Chief Technology Officer • Eagle Ray’s award-winning, ISO 9000-certified, capabilities in the areas of program/project management, IV&V, process and system engineering, performance and risk management, cyber compliance/information assurance, and acquisition support

• Kore Federal’s recognized expertise in key mission growth areas: enterprise mobility, applied analytics, Open Source platforms, and Agile software/systems engineering • A diversified set of prime contracts and partnerships in DHS, DoD, and public sector finance that enhance a well-established contract base in the intelligence community Doherty adds, “Our shared mind-set of continually improving and implementing industry best practices means that we’ll keep learning from each other and strengthening our capabilities, all to the ultimate benefit of our customers.” From CTO Brian Stygar’s perspective, “Together, we have the opportunity to apply specialized engineering expertise and innovations in big data, mission system modernization, and open source architectures to our marquee customer base in the intelligence community. Likewise, we further strengthen our program delivery excellence on key engagements within DHS.”

And life is a journey: From childhood to maturity And youth to age; From innocence to awareness And ignorance to knowing; From foolishness to discretion And then perhaps to wisdom; From weakness to strength Or strength to weakness – And, often back again; From health to sickness And back, we pray, to health again; From offense to forgiveness, From loneliness to love, From joy to gratitude, From pain to compassion, And grief to understanding – From fear to faith; From defeat to defeat to defeat – Until, looking backward or ahead, We see that victory lies Not at some high place along the way, But in having made the journey, stage by stage, A sacred pilgrimage. Birth is a beginning And death a destination But life is a journey, A sacred pilgrimage – - by Rabbi Alvin Fine.

SimVentions believes that all too often corporate America forgets the truth contained in this poem – that life is a journey and not a destination – that the destination of a company’s employee is not the company itself! In 1855, Reverend John Cumming put it this way: All life is a journey, not a home; it is a road, not the country; and those transient enjoyments which you have in this life, lawful in their way, – those incidental and evanescent pleasures which you may sip, – are not home; they are little inns only upon the road-side of life, where you are refreshed for a moment, that you may take again the pilgrim-staff and journey on, seeking what is still before you – the rest that remaineth for the people of God.

Why SimVentions: SimVentions is a company that understands that life is a journey – and their desire is to partner with their employees, their customers and their community – to come alongside them as they walk life’s road…to be one of those ‘little inns upon the roadside of life where you are restored and refreshed.’ This desire is represented in their company motto: “Your Success Is Our Honor™.” Location: SimVentions corporate headquarters is located in Fredericksburg, VA. In addition they have an office in Dahlgren, VA, and personnel in Florida, North Carolina, California and various ‘Theaters.’ Customers: They support the DoD and related organizations, striving to constantly remember that the ultimate customer for their work is the warfighter. Solutions & Services: SimVentions provides solutions and services in three main areas – Engineering (which includes systems, software, security and modeling & simulation), Acquisition & Program Management, and Training. Their company’s activities range from providing engineering solutions to current challenges of the day in areas such as AntiTerrorism, Force Protection, Weapons & Combat Systems Engineering, Information Assurance, and Electronic Warfare – to – developing specialized software applications and visualization capabilities – to – providing professional education and training to their employees, customers and community. “SimVentions is honored to be named to Virginia’s Fantastic 50 list, and consider it a true blessing.” SimVentions, CEO Larry Root. “We try to live out this truth: that where your heart is, there your treasure will be also. So, I am always amazed, and consider it a blessing, when recognitions such as this are received.” You can find out more about SimVentions at www.simventions.com.

YMCA Strategic Plan is Roadmap for Us All

F

or 160 years, the YMCA of Greater Richmond has served as a resource center, committed to strengthening the foundations of community. However, in the quest to shed its ‘gym and swim’ image, the Y is making a more concentrated effort to address the growing needs of the community through its programs and services. This effort is reflected in the Y’s new 2025 Strategic Plan, an initiative that stems from direct engagement with over 700 community leaders. While the plan stays true to the Y’s key focus areas of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, it also helps connect, educate and inspire individuals throughout the community. The plan is outlined in five key objectives: reach more youth during Out of School time; increase learning opportunities for teens; reduce obesity among youth and adults; reduce the occurrence of diabetes in adults; and be inclusive and accessible to people and neighborhoods across Central Virginia. The strategic plan is already proving to be on the leading edge of addressing Greater Richmond’s most pressing needs. A recent Gallup poll, named Richmond as the third “most obese major U.S. community.” Under its focus of healthy living, the Y aims to reduce obesity among youth and adults. The Y also strives to double the participation in wellness programs and activities and

ensure that participants in our Out of School time programs have 30 minutes of physical activity daily. “This community is evolving, and if the Y is to stay relevant, we need to keep up with those changing needs,” said Tim Joyce, President and CEO for the YMCA of Greater Richmond. “The 2025 Strategic Plan is a living, dynamic document that will serve as our compass for programs and services for the youth, teens and families we serve.” It’s not just YMCA leadership touting the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle. In April, more than 8,000 individuals attended the 5th annual YMCA Healthy Kids Day® and Walk, a free community event aimed at inspiring kids to keep their minds and bodies active. The event is held in partnership with Bon Secours. At the Northside Family YMCA site, participants were visited by Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III. While on stage, Griffin touted the benefits of exercise, eating healthy and believing in their dreams. Joyce said he is aware that the success of the strategic plan is dependent on collaboration with like-minded community leaders and individuals. “We approach this work aware that its success is dependent upon organizations, municipalities and individuals alike who believe, as we do, that this community can be one of the greatest, most life changing places to live.” To learn more about the YMCA of Greater Richmond’s 2025 Strategic Plan, visit ymcarichmond.org/2025.
