The Vintage Air Rally - Crete2Cape Abbas Takim Who can forget the romantic image of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones at the controls of a vintage aircraft as he flies to exotic places across the globe? Well, a group of real-life aviators are lucky enough to be flying across Africa and they are coming to Tanzania! Following in the footsteps of the pioneering flights of the 1920s and exactly 30 years after the epic movie “Out of Africa”, 15 vintage aircraft built in the early 1900s will take to the air for a truly unique rally across Africa. The Vintage Air Rally - Crete2Cape starts on the 12th of November 2016 from Crete, Greece. The Rally connects some of the most beautiful and evocative points in Africa, combining the challenge of flying these magnificent planes with the element of competition. Among the vintage biplanes taking part will be a Bücker Jungmann, two Travel Air 4000s, two Stampe SV.4s and four de Havilland Tiger Moths. Flying low along the Nile from Cairo to Khartoum, past the highlands of Ethiopia, further down the plains of Kenya. Then off again past Mount Kilimanjaro into the Serengeti and Ngorongoro and on to the spice island of Zanzibar and even further South, crossing Zambia, over the Victoria Falls to Bulawayo in Zimbabwe. The final days of this breath-taking journey will take the teams into Botswana and South Africa, ending in Cape Town. The Vintage Air Rally - Crete2Cape is a truly unique event and has never been done before, ever! This is an international event with 15 teams from various nationalities (amongst others from the USA, UK, Germany, Belgium, Chile, Israel South Africa and Botswana), supported by the British governmental GREAT campaign and the FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale). A key feature of the Vintage Air Rally will be the opportunities it offers for Tanzanian residents - especially those who love historic aircrafts - to see and photograph the vintage squadron at a series of scheduled stopovers along the route, specifically Ngorongoro (28 - 30 Nov) and Zanzibar (30 Nov - 02 Dec).
