How Appium Disrupted Mobile App Automation Through Collaboration. •What is open source software? •How OSS disrupts the balance of power, by having everyone work together to solve common problems, and provide solutions to organisations of all shapes and sizes. •The story behind deciding to open source Appium, •How Appium has disrupted mobile automation through collaboration

Dan Cuellar is the creator of the open source mobile automation framework Appium, and Head of Testing at Foodit. Previously, he headed the test organisation at Zoosk in San Francisco, and worked as a software engineer on Microsoft Outlook for Mac, and other products in the Microsoft Office suite. He is an advocate of open source technologies and technical software testing.

R.I.P Testing 2018 In 2013, Chris made a statement that he thought testers would not exist in five years’ time. Currently, testing focuses on development, and is used to try and prove development assumptions and interpretations are accurate against badly defined user requirements. The cause of all our problems is inaccurate, incomplete requirements and specifications – the symptoms are project or product failure, loss of reputation and loss of revenue.

With a degree in Computer Science, and as a Fellow of the British Computer Society, Chris is a senior testing professional, with over 30 years experience in the IT industry. While passionate about product and process quality, he understands that this comes at a price, and tries to adopt the concept of ‘good enough’ testing, to ensure value for money and quantify return on investment.

Introducing a Testing and Environment Practice Team within an Omni-channel Retail Environment The demands placed on IT to support continuous growth within John Lewis as an omni-channel business mean that system changes are increasingly complex, as solutions have more touch points and more levels of integration, thus increasing the potential points of failure. John Lewis has introduced a Testing and Environment Practice Team, to de-risk IT change through the delivery of software testing, and test environment provisioning. At the 2014 TESTA Awards, John Lewis won the Best Overall Testing Project in the Retail sector, in partnership with Cognizant Technology Solutions. The judges felt this entry provided a clear explanation of the business and technical challenges involved. It was a compelling case, showing how the test and quality approach was a significant enabler in the project reaching its goals.

Chris Young is a Chartered IT Professional member of the British Computer Society with over 40 years experience of project delivery within various project roles. He has over 25 years experience of working within software testing, and during a 34 year career with Post Office Ltd he worked on a number of major projects.

With over 20 years of experience as an information systems professional in the UK and America, Hector has held technical and managerial positions in application development, test automation and software testing. In the last decade he has worked at John Lewis where he participated in the creation of a Testing Centre of Excellence and is currently a Portfolio Test Manager.
