Mangrove madness Waiuku’s John Fairburn looks back on the history of the Manukau’s treatment by successive councils, and says bureaucratic issues with our coastline are nothing new. From mangroves to Pacific oysters to sewage outflows, our coast has been under attack for years.

The Post Newspaper is now on facebook, and our team has been having fun with local news items, a few video clips and hosting our print edition as a flip-page electronic copy. We expected it might be something our readers would be interested in; we didn’t quite expect to have 9,000 individual viewers in five days, with over 5000 downloads of our College Haka video alone! Garage sale for Relay fund The Karioitahi Konexions Relay for Life Team are hosting a garage sale this Saturday at the Waiuku Fire Station as part of their quest to reach $100,000 in total donations to the Cancer Society. Since the group formed several years ago, they have raised close to $80,000 already, and are aiming to reach the $100,000 total before the next Relay event in 2015. The garage sale starts from 8am and runs to noon, with a large variety of items available, plus a sausage sizzle and raffles.

Kariaotahi Surf Life Saving Club has been twice-honoured at the 2013 Surf Life Saving Northern Region Awards of Excellence on Saturday night. The club won ‘Rescue of the Year’ for a rescue that involved seven of its volunteer lifeguards, and club stalwart Jim Coe was honoured as he became one of the youngest Life Members of the region. The Rescue of the Year was for a multiple rescue. After a long day on patrol, local lifeguards Ben Coers, Lee Lawrence, Guy Hornblow, Alex Van Tilburg, Cameron Burrows, Eoin Elliot and junior Lifeguard Zach Butters decided to go for a body surf. Whilst out in the water they came across an adult and two children struggling to stay afloat and

were forcing each other under water in attempts to stay alive. Without any rescue equipment the lifeguards assisted them to safety but in doing so spotted another five children caught in the same rip closer to shore. All patients were taken back to the club and multiple patients had to be given oxygen treatment to be kept in a stable condition. Without the lifeguards’ intervention, eight lives could have easily been lost. Jim Coe, (pictured left with his award on Saturday), has been involved in life saving since he was 14, and has held virtually every role possible with the club, and is widely recognised as one of the outstanding servants of surf lifesaving nationally.

Chief Fire Officer of the Waiuku Fire Brigade, Colin Riddle, is disgusted after thieves stole vital rescue equipment from the brigade’s Rescue Tender on Saturday. Sometime between 1pm and 4pm on Saturday, a defibrillator, used for saving people with heart attacks, plus two radios and four Fire Rescue jackets, were taken from the engine. Colin says the local St John have loaned the brigade a defibrillator for now, but would really love to get the items back. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the brigade or Waiuku Police.

carpentry apprentices

Local building apprentices, Aaron Coe (inset, top), and Taylor Oaks (in set, bottom), have been named among the 12 national recipients of the 2013 PlaceMakers Apprentice Scholarship Scheme (P.A.S.S.). In partnership with the Building Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO), PlaceMakers last year called for applicants for the scheme’s pilot year and was met with an overwhelming response. The scholarships mean Aaron and Taylor will have their tuition fees paid by the building materials supplier and the PlaceMakers Pukekohe branch will also provide them with on-going mentoring, support and experience as they work towards completing their qualifications. A former Waiuku College head boy, Aaron has wanted to be a builder since the age of fifteen when he began working in his summer holidays as a trade-hand at Walworth Builders in Pukekohe. The 18 year-old enrolled as an apprentice last year and it was his boss who encourage him to apply for P.A.S.S. “I put together a big book of my achievements over the last few years and sent it in with my application and they liked it.” “I am very lucky because I’ve had a

load of support from PlaceMakers and my workmates at Walworth Builders,” Aaron says. Aaron’s greatest ambition is to one day build someone’s dream home. “It would be great to start a well-loved project from scratch in Franklin and see it through to completion,” he says. Karaka building apprentice, Taylor, hopes to continue the family ‘quality handy-men’ tradition. He grew-up building tree huts with his Dad, and his builder/bricklayer Grandfather often shares his tricks of the trade. The 16 year-old is an apprentice with Dean Mcgahey at Bronsnan Construction in Rosedale, and has most recently been working on leaky homes and assisting with new builds “Being able to see the industry from a wider perspective was a huge draw card of the P.A.S.S. programme. “Days are set aside to visit frame and truss plants and get on-site experience and mentoring at PlaceMakers, which I’m really looking forward to. “Having the course fees paid for by PlaceMakers is also a huge bonus. It means I can spend that money on getting some really good power tools instead,” Taylor says.

Residents say response raises more questions than answers Local residents Sandra Holmes and Tamara Bennett have had a response from Auckland Transport over the decision to increase the recommended speed on their notorious stretch of the Waiuku-Pukekohe road, but say the response has raised more questions than it answers. Auckland Transport says it is ‘prepared to reinstate the 65 km/h advisory speed and will amend the signage accordingly,’ after they installed 75km/h signs recently, but said as a mediumterm fix they would prioritise resealing that section of the road. However, as Sandra says, the council’s

response says the majority of the accidents involve vehicles travelling eastbound (towards Pukekohe), when all the documentation the residents have supplied show 90% of the accidents are from cars travelling towards Waiuku. Sandra and Tamara are also stunned that Council’s official figures show only a fraction of the accidents that residents have themselves documented and sent to Council, with photographs. Auckland Council says it does not believe lowering the speed of that stretch of road would be consistent with roadside development in the area, and ‘is therefore highly unlikely to be support-

ed by stakeholder groups or complied with by the majority of drivers.’ While Sandra and Tamara say they have excellent support on the issue from local board member Jill Naysmith, they feel that the response from Auckland Transport suggests the Council does not yet have a grasp of the issues, and also suggests that the information they have sent in terms of accident frequency has been either mislaid or disregarded. In the meantime, as Sandra says, she still has front paddocks that can not be used by stock, as she is continually worried about another vehicle breaking down the fence and the stock escaping.

Waiuku Policing report by Sergeant Simon Palmer

Burglaries and threatening behaviour Hi, I hope the last few weeks have been good and everybody has been thinking about their driving habits. I have received a number of complaints regarding impatient driving, over taking unnecessarily and speed too great on our rural roads. Police were called to a burglary on Totara Street last week. It was a very good result with the 14 year old offender in the Police cells within an hour. His bail was opposed and he is now in youth justice lock up. Given the active charges and history he has hopefully he will remain there for a lot longer. Police also responded to a domestic incident where the 21 year old male has threatened family members. On arrival at the address Police noticed that the male took an interest in horticulture. They were not your normal pot plants, but they looked pretty healthy. He was charged with threatening behaviour, threatening to kill, cultivating cannabis and possession of pipes. At the moment there is a 15 year old female Maori with long black hair snooping onto peoples properties. She always has an excuse

if she gets caught, such as someone is chasing her. Waiuku Police know who she is, and have dealt with her over the past few months including assault, fighting, stealing from cars, burglary and unlawfully on property. Please ring 111 if you have any instances like this. They all need to be reported. We have a number of our main offenders out of action at the moment. A couple are serving time in prison for burglary, another two have been bailed to another district or area all together, a recidivist shoplifter is in prison and one of our youths is in lock up. These have been good re-

Federated Farmers is backing the wrong side with the decision to support Environment Minister Amy Adams’ intention to block local councils from being able to regulate for genetic engineering in their local communities. By supporting the Minister, Federated Farmers is misrepresenting rural New Zealand, many of its own members, and the majority of New Zealanders who do not want genetic engineering (GE) in their farming systems, environment or food supply. Instead of protecting the best interests of local farming families, Federated Farmers is supporting a move that flies in the face of the international experience of GE, litigation, lower yields and unnecessary herbicide use. Local councils need to represent their communities in the absence of government regulation. It’s currently up to councils to ensure a genuinely precautionary approach to the risks

and how it all fits together, rather than an incremental approach” she said. Greenfield RUB areas currently under investigation in the south, north and northwest have a potential capacity for around 90,000 dwellings and 35,000 jobs. These areas include Warkworth, Silverdale, Kumeu-Huapai, in the north and north-west, and Drury - Pukekohe in the south, and also incorporate around 1300 hectares of new business land. Yesterday’s RUB workshop considered issues such as infrastructure (transport/ roading, stormwater, wastewater, parks and schools) as well as environmental pro-

tection. The Deputy Mayor said it was excellent to have the area knowledge of local boards to guide the discussions. “When you start to get down to the nuts and bolts of the draft Unitary Plan, and all its components, local knowledge is invaluable if we are to arrive at wellconsidered solutions for population growth across all of Auckland,” she said. Elected members gave interim direction for staff to do further work on potential changes to provisional RUB boundaries. This work will contribute to the upcoming mapping workshops.

greenscene Charmaine Petereit Green Party Spokesperson for Hunua Ph: 027 6794044 Email: charmaine.petereit@greens.org.nz of contamination, litigation, economic loss, and environmental damage from GE. Government legislation, such as the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act and agencies such as the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), the Ministry for Primary Industries and the Ministry for the Environment, consistently fail. GE proponents seem very happy to see inept legislation and compliance as a means towards the introduction of GE, regardless of the effects on New Zealand’s clean green 100% Pure brand. Local councils need to represent their communities in the absence of government regulation. Federated Farmers has also discouraged suspension of the neonicitinoid poisons that threaten the important pollination activity of honey bees and other insects. Phone: 09 235 7835

It is vital that spokespeople for primary production in New Zealand, like Federated Farmers, represent the best interests of family farmers and sustainable farming systems, not the corporate interests of the life sciences and agrichemical industry giants. Federated Farmers grains council has previously been concerned at the risks of GE contamination in exports to Japan and elsewhere, and the honey industry knows that the EU and other markets don’t want GE in a speck of their pollen or honey products. GE contamination has had a significant cost on rural communities’ world wide. The Environment Minister and Federated Farmers should stop pretending that New Zealand legislation can prevent the same here. Councils must be able to fill the gap left by the deficiencies in central government legislation and administration.

Lions farewell longest serving member A huge turnout of family, community members and at least 30 Lions packed out the Holy Trinity Anglican Church on Tuesday last week as they paid respect to a well known and respected member of the community and their longest serving Lion of 43 years service. Bruce joined Waiuku Lions Club in 1970 when he was share milking in Aka Aka. The club was just five years old at the time. Bruce had held most

executive positions over his tenure and chaired many committees, most recently as Chairman of the Membership Committee. With his in-depth club knowledge and years of giving back to the community, his loss will be felt at a local club, local community, and national club level. Bruce was also a keen golfer and as both a Lion and Patron of the Golf Club, organised the first ever Lions Club Golf Day which he was very proud to see become an annual fund-

raising event. His presence will be sorely missed at this years event. The Waiuku Lions Club would like to extend their deepest sympathies to Bruce’s family and thank them for allowing the farewells given at the funeral where Lions Marian Thomas and Grant Thompson spoke of his irreplaceable knowledge, friendship and wise counsel. The Lions proudly gave Bruce a guard of honour as he left the church.

‘Great Gurnard Grab’ as Scouts raise jamboree funds A big part of Scouting is community service which the Waiuku Scout Group has a strong focus on. Most recently local Keas, Cubs and Scouts complete a clean up at the Tamakae Reserve, (picture right). Past activities have included cleaning up gardens at Kindergartens or collecting for the annual Plunket Appeal. The Waikaretu Easter Camp this year saw Waiuku Scouts involved in clearing 250 sacks of Wandering Jew (a weed that can destroy native bush). To continue their learning, the Waiuku Scout Troop is about to attend the 20th NZ Scout Jamboree at the end of this year. Held every three years, Scouts will normally only get one opportunity to attend this wonderful event. Joining up with thousands of fellow scouts from throughout the country and around the world, they will test themselves and learn many new skills, developing their team building and leadership qualities in the

process. The Waiuku Troop joins others from the region, on their journey to Feilding, via a vintage steam train. Following 10 days of activities from rock climbing to bush craft; their parents will pick up some very weary souls. In recent months the troop has been working hard to raise money for this event. They have shovelled sand,

provided security patrols and catered functions. They have also been at New World running sausage sizzles and selling raffle tickets, and the next big event is ‘The Great Gurnard Grab’ The Counties Sport Fishing Club have lent their facilities at TeToro and it is set be a great day out for the whole family. Tickets for the

competition are on sale at DKM Fishing & Marine in Waiuku for $15 each. From 3pm Sunday July 14, there will be raffles, a sausage sizzle and magic carpet rides happening. Weighin is 3pm, with a follow-up day of July 21 in case of bad weather. For further information, contact Bob on 027 488 0563

Stunning haka caps off week Waiuku College concluded its Maori Language week with a stunning mass haka at the gymnasium last Friday, an event captured by Maori TV and Seven Sharp. Teacher Piki Jakeman had spent several weeks working with senior students and a number of local primary schools, practising a special haka for the occasion, and before the mass performance all participants lined up to spell out ‘Haka 13’ on the gym floor. Master of ceremonies Roimata Minhinnick detailed the history of the haka, before senior

students led a quick practice before the full hall thundered into the emotional and enthusiastic performance. • See the video of the event on the Post’s facebook page, www.facebook.com/districtpost. The video has had over 5000 downloads since Friday afternoon! Below, some of the images from the haka, and Julian De Villiers’ stunning image of the ‘Haka 13’ captured from a ladder high atop the gym mezzanine.

Sinclair double sinks Manukau

Waiuku AFC took on Manukau in Northern League soccer action on Saturday in another must win game - for both sides in reality. Manukau were bottom of the table on 7 points but had scored a valuable 3-1 win against Albany last week while Waiuku, on 12 points, had beaten Warkworth at the death. Waiuku were under no illusions that while Manakau were sitting on the bottom that this was going to be no walk in the park. And so it proved. The reserves had put on a fine display in the curtain raiser with a 2-2 all draw. The Waiuku reserve team, who have an average age of 18, again played their opposition off the park with some nice football and were unlucky not to get three points. The tone was set quite quickly in the main game with the football being played at both ends. Waiuku were dominating and if not for the Manukau keeper would have been two ahead. Twice an Elliot Crean header was kept out and then Mitchel Thomasen went close with another header but damaged his knee when he hit the ground. Thomasen had been playing out of his skin to this point marking Waikato National League player Hone Fowler and Chilean Ricky Espinoza. He never recovered and was substituted at half time. Not before Fowler nearly scored one of the goals of the season when he flicked on a menacing cross which just missed the top corner. The second half started in the same fashion but you could sense that both teams really wanted this result. Waiuku were the first to make the break-

through. A Cody Ralph corner was not cleared and the ball found its way to Derek Sinclair at the back post. Sinclair volleyed it on the first time of asking and the ball smashed its way into the top of the net. This spurred Manukau on and Waiuku started to give away needless freekicks in their defensive third. The pressure told and Phil van den Broek parried a direct freekick and Espinoza was on hand to header into the goal. Waiuku had to start all over again and they did. Paul Duffy in the midfield was outstanding with his ball winning tackles and it started to give Waiuku the momentum. A ball forward saw Ralph get away from his marker and around the keeper. His shot was destined for the net and as he turned to celebrate, the Manukau defender somehow got back and cleared on the line. Duffy went close with a volley which was deflected out for a corner with Sinclair free on the far post. Then the winner came. A Darren Woolnough freekick picked out Duffy and his shot was blocked out towards Sinclair who volley into the top corner. After this point there was only going to be one winner and youngster Mitch Hill, George Winship and Ralph nearly came close to adding the score. 2-1 to Waiuku it finished Coach Jim Evans was a very proud man. “We knew this was going to be tough today but the boys were up for the challenge and they should be proud of their result. Man of the match is shared between Derek Sinclair and Paul Duffy who were both outstanding.”

The drought has frustrated many but has encouraged large numbers to get afloat and enjoy the outstanding boating opportunities we are blessed with. Many are saying it has been the best boating summer for many years and are eagerly awaiting the next one. Reviewing the season with our Coastguard volunteers, two types of incidents stood out - vessels capsizing and vessels that have struck rocks. In fact since the beginning of summer, the Northern Region Operations Centre has been involved with 48 capsize and 45 grounding incidents – unfortunately some with fatal consequences. Exercising key safe boating practices such as checking the weather, not overloading, being aware of the limitations of the boat and some basic navigation precautions would have prevented many of these occurring. Obviously wearing lifejackets can also make a huge difference should the unexpected happen. If you’re looking to learn about safe boating, one of our friendly and enthusiastic tutors (many are also active Search and Rescue Phone: 09 235 7835

Volunteers) can take you through the Day Skipper - New Zealand’s most popular recreational course. Should you find yourself needing help there is no doubt a VHF Radio is your best option and far superior to any mobile phone. By using a mobile, you are communicating one to one whereas the VHF mobile is one to many which can make the world of difference. We recently received a Mayday from a sinking vessel. Because they knew what they were doing, the call gave everyone in the area all the information they needed to help. Almost instantly they had four vessels alongside escorting them into shore and Coastguard assistance wasn’t required. The Marine VHF Radio Operator Course covers the correct use of this vital tool. You’ll learn about distress calls, routine operation and how the radio can help you stay safer on the water. You’ll be surprised at the peace of mind this knowledge provides. We’d suggest you don’t put it off until the prime boating weather returns. Instead consider using the winter to get ready for another great season.

We have had birds hit and killed on several occasions, making us concerned for both geese and drivers. “This demonstrates the lack of nourishment available to them from the kikuyu grass on both sides of the road. “Also, the geese are regularly being fed bread by the public which has contributed to wing deformities in younger birds, leaving them flightless,” he says. If you can provide a new home for some geese please contact parks advisor Kristen Ross on kristen.ross@aucklandcouncil.govt. nz. You will need to take 15-20 birds and demonstrate that you have a suitable new home for the geese. Ideally this will consist of a rural property or large section of land with a pond. Council’s parks staff are hoping that birdlovers with an appropriate property might come forward to re-home and take care of some of the birds. Malcolm Page, Manager Local and Sports Parks South, says the site can no longer cope with this large flock of birds, which now numbers around 65, putting the health and wellbeing of the geese under threat. “Embden geese are a domestic goose breed and we suspect they were abandoned on this site some years ago. “With the flock now at around 65 birds, we are concerned that numbers will increase by 25% next breeding season if we don’t disperse the flock. “Several times each day the birds cross Wattle Farm Road between Tington Wetland

Special feature: synthetic cannabis in our community

Michael Botur talks with a local grandfather who became addicted to synthetic cannabis, held a knife to his wife’s throat, and stood over his kids for money for his addiction. Today, he has new hope and is rebuilding his life.

From despair to new hope for grandfather Four years ago, Johnny tried synthetic cannabis. From there, it wasn’t long until it became an uncontrollable habit which led to him losing his tattooing job, extorting his family for money, running up a tab for hundreds of dollars of drugs at a Waiuku dairy, attacking his wife and sleeping rough under View Road Primary School. “It’s an ugly drug man, an ugly drug. I hate what it’s done to me. I used to have regular paranoia and hallucinate about killing my wife. This led to an incident where I held my wife up by the throat with the knife. I was prepared to kill her.” Reflecting on the four years of his life in which he ignored his children in order to smoke synthetic cannabis in his garden shed, Johnny says “I’d get up at 5.30am and all throughout my day I’m getting stoned. The kids knew their dad always had to be stoned when he went out; when I came back, it was straight into the shed.” Johnny tried every variety of synthetic cannabis there was. “My favourite was Kronic, that was the closest you could get to a marijuana [sensation.] You’re looking for that quick fast hit. I tried to go back to marijuana, but it had no effect. When Kronic was taken off the market I went onto Kryptonite. Also, K2 Black was the killer, this stuff would make you so paranoid it felt like your brain was going to explode.” “I got my daughter into it which really distresses me now. Pukeoware student wins Young Leader Award Greer Sinclair, Head Girl of Pukeoware School has been recognised with a Sir Peter Blake Young Leader Award for showing leadership within her school and the community. Greer’s award was presented with a medal and certificate, by Pukekohe Westpac Bank Manager Sue Chung, at school last Monday. The past twelve months have been one of many successes for Greer, who been has selected for, and exudes leadership in, the Auckland AMI Netball Training Squad, Auckland Rep Netball Team, Mini-bots Netball Team, Head Girl of Pukeoware, as well as success in guitar and singing competitions. This is all in conjunction with educational success and participation in all areas of school life. Pukeoware Principal Eamonn Kelly says, “The award exemplifies the allround excellence that Greer exudes; and is a testament to the determination that she has towards reaching for the stars, and inspiring other’s to do the same. Her leadership is truly unparalleled; her natural aptitude for leadership surpasses many her senior.”

Greer Sinclair, Head Girl of Pukeoware School with Pukekohe Westpac Bank Manager Sue Chung last week. Sir Peter Blake Trust CEO, Shelley Campbell, says Sir Peter, through his own amazing achievements and incredible leadership, inspired all New Zealanders to dare to dream and to have the drive and determination to make their dreams a reality.

“Through its programmes and activities, the Trust aims to inspire and mobilise the next generation of New Zealand leaders to realise their goals and dreams too. “The Young Leader Awards are a great way to recognise and build confidence in our young people, and show them that they’re on the right track, so that they may one day go on to be a future New Zealand leader.” Campbell says. Bank Manager Sue Chung says Westpac has been a primary sponsor of the Sir Peter Blake Trust for the past nine years and is right behind acknowledging and cultivating New Zealand’s future leaders. “These young students are the future generation of our New Zealand leaders,” Sue Chung says. “It’s important we recognize and acknowledge what Greer has done to achieve a Young Leader Award and hopefully it will encourage and inspire her friends and peers to see what great leadership looks like so they can do the same. “Our Young Leader Award winners can be exceptionally proud of what they’ve achieved,” she says.

er status is $113 (or $93 with the discount). Selected or farm dog fees are $59 (or $39 with the discount). The council’s policy is that all new dog owners are considered to be an approved owner. The onus is then with the owner to show they are a good dog owner who takes responsibility for their pets. Failure to register a dog can result in dogs being seized, an infringement fine of $300 or prosecution.

Gregory a determined young achiever

Womens Health Seminar

Eight year old Gregory Capper-Conijn from Waipipi (left, with his calf Peanut)), has achieved his goal of winning the Holley Geck Memorial Junior Showing trophy in the 2012-13 show circuit. Holley Geck from Pukekohe was involved in showing before she tragically killed in a car accident at the age of 17. Her family donated the trophy in her memory and Gregory was determined to win it, as he had known Holley very well. It is a national trophy awarded to the junior handler who has accumulated the most points during a season. Gregory also achieved second Ayrshire Junior Group showing New Zea-

Postponed from an earlier date the Barfoot and Thompson sponsored Women’s Health Seminar is being held on Thursday July 18 from 6.30pm in the Pukeoware Hall. The presentation is by Diana Burgess a naturopath and international speaker and will be a very informative seminar for women of all ages. There will be no door sales but tickets are available from Barfoot and Thompson Waiuku and proceeds will be donated to Starship.

Books for Rotary For almost a decade, the Rotary Club of Waiuku have staged their annual book fair. Again this year the fair will be held in the Waiuku War Memorial Hall on September 7 & 8, but organisers say that more books are needed. The club is anxious to receive any donations of unwanted books, CDs, DVDs, sheet music and jigsaws that they can sell. Proceeds help Rotary donate to community projects like the defibrillator the club bought for the police last year, and assisting young people achieve leadership roles. Anne Woodward who sorts and prices each item on behalf of the club says their programme for the fair is on track, but they are still eager to receive more donations. land-wide and third Pure Bred National trophy. This young man has been involved with his mother Michelle showing their Ayrshire and Jersey stock for a few years. Last year he was responsible for his own calf and competed in 13 shows from Warkworth to Matamata, including calf club, group day, A & P and club shows. “On show day it is all on,” said Michele. “Gregory has to be up at 5am to help load the stock, make sure he has all his gear. If we are at home by 5pm it is a bonus,” she said. Gregory’s job is to stay with the show animals all day and help prepare them for the

show ring. “I usually enter up to four events at each show, as well as Gregory showing his calf,” said Michele. “He has to make sure they have water and feed as well as cleaning the animals and gear while making sure our uniforms are ready for each class.” Gregory is making a name for himself as a very professional handler who is in tune with stock from calves to bulls and often leads out animals for other owners. Watch this determined young man in the show rings with his animals achieving high accolades in the years to come — good on you Gregory.

Last of the regular traders A selection of old photos recently came in from Dave Sutherland of Grahams Beach, and some will feature in the column from time to time. Being a ship enthusiast this photo of one of the last commercial ships on the Manukau Harbour particularly took my fancy. The Awhitu is seen here making her way in the harbour in 1926 when she was less than one year old. It would be only a further six years and the vessel would make her last commercial trip to the port of Waiuku. She remained on the harbour operating from Orua Bay to Onehunga until June 1957—a time when road development on the peninsula progressed to out-strip the Awhitu of her useful water borne service. A short time later she slipped quietly out of the harbour to begin a new life in Kawhia, and then three years later was sold to a Tauranga owner. Some years ago, I had the pleasure to have a look over the Awhitu when she was back in Auckland as a pleasure launch. I wonder where she is now? Any information email bill@ thepostnewspaper.co.nz

Shop Local Our local store owners have an innate sense of customer service. Naturally and spontaneously, they never miss an opportunity to demonstrate the advantages and benefits of shopping close to home. More often than not, they know our names by heart as well as those of our parents or our children, bringing a warm and friendly dimension to our daily shopping. Better still, they remember our tastes and our expectations in detail. The butcher, for example, knows exactly which cut of meat to serve to one customer and which to serve to another without forgetting their favourite type of ham and how thick it should be sliced. It’s true, of course, that these little details are not essential to our survival, but they do contribute toward improving our quality of life and making our shopping experience that much more pleasant.

Collectively as a community, we all have a lot to gain by supporting our local shops and producers. Indeed, every time we encourage the merchants in our neighbourhood we are making a gesture that is profitable for ourselves and our community. We are contributing directly to the economic development of our region as well as strengthening its social fabric. Moreover, the proximity of goods and services not only makes our daily lives easier but also allow us to

save considerable amounts of time and money. Even though the item price may sometimes be a little higher at your local store, it reduces the number of trips we make to large city centres. Indeed, once the cost of gas is added to the bill, some price reductions do not justify the trip. At the end of the day, buying local is often our best option.

Nine tips to save on your fuel costs this season

Email: countiesdrivingschool@ps.gen.nz

Safe and precise panel repairs with Waiuku’s most advanced salvage and repair specialists

New taxes and the recent drop in the New Zealand dollar have pushed fuel prices to new highs and as a result have put a considerable strain on Kiwi wallets! Fortunately most Kiwis have a good idea of how to drive economically. Unfortunately, it often involves driving as if there is a sleeping kitten just under your accelerator. Easy…easy…don’t wake the kitten. And as anyone who has taken part in a fuel economy test drive knows, that sort of driving can also put you to sleep. In celebration of the New Zealand launch of the AllNew Fiesta ST, Ford New Zealand offers these 10 real world tips for New Zealand motorists looking to lower fuel costs but still keep driving exciting… Get your kit off. The kit on the roof that is. Surf on the weekend but not during the week? Take the racks off your car during the week. This is about better aerodynamics and makes a big difference in fuel efficiency. Ensure your tyres are up to the correct pressure. So easy and can have a massive impact on fuel usage as well as handling. It’s also safe. Low tyre pressure can cause blowouts. What is in your boot? Weight can be another factor in both fuel usage and road handling. Unload unnecessary items from your car. Some people also never entirely fill their tank, opting to fill only 60 or 70 per

cent since a full tank is actually quite heavy itself. Don’t rubberneck! Keep up to speed; safely but keep up to speed. When you slow down to have a look, you’re causing others, in some cases hundreds of others, to slow down for no reason. All those cars then hit the pedal to speed back up, including you, wasting fuel in the process. In a 2011 study in the USA, it was estimated that traffic jams burned 5 per cent of the country’s total fuel used that year – that’s more than 7 billion litres of fuel worth more than 9 billion NZ dollars. That’s a lot of fuel! Anticipate – Don’t overdo this one and slow to crawling two kilometres out but always look ahead and get a good idea of what is about to happen in the next few seconds. Minimise your reactionary braking, or aggressive acceleration. Smooth out your driving. Don’t drive angry – Easier said than done, especially in frustrating city or town driving. But angry driving burns more fuel. Burning out at the traffic lights or weaving in and out of cars can all mean heavy acceleration and heavy fuel use. Cruise – Using cruise control can save. For example, setting it to 95kmh can save as much as 5 per cent versus manually driving between 90 and 100 kmh. Are you in tune? Would your engine sing well enough to win an automotive X Factor? Kiwis are notorious for not servicing their vehicles. But while you may be saving money in servicing costs, you’ll end up paying in the long run with poorer fuel economy or even bigger mechanics’ bills if you leave it too long. Rewards – This one has nothing to do with your car. Watch out for grocery store deals. Some can have up to 40 cents off a litre when you spend a certain amount, which is very exciting for your wallet! Just be careful you’re not overspending to get the deal, which would be somewhat counterproductive.

Decider matches this weekend for Premier Rugby It was another riveting round of Counties Power Club rugby with this weekend’s matches signaling the end of play-off hopes for some teams and going down to the wire for other teams as they head into decider matches next weekend. Waiuku now sit in third place after beating Karaka 31-18 in a fitting tribute to lock Sam Cole in his 100th match for the green and red. Karaka showed a lot of spirit in the first half which seem to evaporate in the second spell. Both sides started by trading penalties. Karaka’s wing Peni Buakula scored a 90m run away try from turn over ball on their own line. Waiuku responded from the kick off with a penalty which they back up shortly afterwards with a solid team try, finished off by second-five Toetu David. Waiuku applied more pressure on Karaka which resulted in another try to Lucky Palamo who darted inside the post to extend their lead. Karaka instantly replied with their own try in an impressive individual effort to their other winger Sione Molia. Both sides trade penalties again taking the half time score to 19-18 to Waiuku. Waiuku turned their nose into a strong wind in the second half and retain possession for most of the stanza and were rewarded with two tries to props Simon Lemalu and Maka Tatafu. Lemalu scored two minutes into

the second half in the corner and Tatafu crashed over the line from good forward play. Waiuku dominated in their defence for the next 30 minutes to deny Karaka any scoring opportunities. Simon Lemalu and Toetu David were their stand outs with a solid performance from Ronald Raaymakers. For Karaka their lock Asa Lehauli was their player of the Day and Sione Molia was a constant threat. Manurewa kept their playoff hopes alive with a 32-20 win over Bombay. Bombay showed glimpses of promise but ball handling errors, missed tackles and poor decision making let them down. Bombay scored first from a chip kick with flanker Matthew Biggelaar crossing the line. Manurewa slotted a penalty then backed it up with a converted try and from then on both sides traded points. Bombay picked up their additional points with five penalties to Ki Anufe and Manurewa scored four tries in total with Ben Masoe crossing twice and Louis Maxwell and Peter White collecting one each. Loki Crichton was his normal consistent performer with three conversions and two penalties. Manurewa stretched out their lead but Bombay fought back with Manurewa securing the match in the last five minutes when they put it out of reach. Bombay’s stand outs were

Waiuku Netball Supporter of the Week

Ki Anufe and loose forward Johnny Kawai. For Manurewa Ben Masoe ran good lines and Mark Talaese was again strong. As expected the top of the table clash was an enthralling spectacle with Ardmore Marist edging out Pukekohe 47-42 to retain the Counties Power Cup. With nearly 100 points scored in the match it was a try fest and they started coming early with Ardmore Marist’s Alamanda Motuga and Luteru Laulala scoring two early tries. Pukekohe struck back with winger Sione Fifita crossing the line. Ardmore Marist’s backline cut through Pukekohe and the visitors did the same trading similar blows. The game evened out at many stages which saw the score equal at 22-all, 29-all, 39-all and 42-all. Ardmore Marist dominated the set-piece with Pukekohe winning only one line-out which proved to be the difference. For Ardmore Marist Tyrone Lefau with his red beard scored a brace of tries and was the stand out back with AJ Alatimu also scoring. For Pukekohe Jared Page scored two tries and was strong on the boot again. Team mates Joe Reynolds and Nigel Watson also crossed the chalk. Ardmore Marist sealed the match the same way they did when theses two teams met in the first round with a try at the end of the match to No 8 Jake Fepuleai. The last few minutes saw Pukekohe hot on attack but they miss the opportunity to even the score.

Player of the day for Ardmore Marist was their flanker Greg Lealofi with AJ Alatimu strong on his return from France. Pukekohe’s best were Nigel Watson, Niva Ta’auso, Maama Vaipulu and Joe Reynolds. The Counties Power Game of the week saw Onewhero finish their season with a 24-21 win against Patumahoe in another entertaining spectacle for fans. Patumahoe fielded a strong team in another fast and physical Counties Power club rugby encounter. They had the services of Jimmy Tupou and it was Ale-

pini Olosoni’s 100th match for his side. Onewhero went out to a 14-0 lead with two tries to second-five Filipe Pau and halfback Dave Bason. Sean Reidy got Patumahoe on the board with two penalties taking the half time score to 14-6 in the visitors favour. In the second spell Reidy slotted another penalty and also scored a try. Onewhero’s centre Elijah Koaneti scored an intercept try and Patumahoe replied with a try by Vern Comley. Nathan Langsford kicked a 49m penalty to win the game. In the end Patumahoe were

camped out on Onewhero’s line and had a penalty but opted for the tap in an effort to win the Nicholson-Dark Memorial Trophy. At times Onewhero did their best to lose the match but held for the win and retained the trophy. For Onewhero their lock Courtney Roberts was set phase and contact dominant and their flanker Nathan Sunde was solid all round. For Patumahoe their stand outs were their latest centurion and PGG Wrightson Player of the Day Alepini Olosoni, Josh Van Lieshout and Vern Comley.

New Aka Aka playgroup The planning and organisation of a newly formed Playgroup in Aka Aka is now complete and the centre is up and running. The name, Pukeko Playgroup is a follow-through of the Aka Aka School emblem of a Pukeko holding a milk

pail, as the Playgroup is running on the school grounds. Although it was initiated by the School Principal, Mr Keladitis, it is run separately from the school, with anyone being able to go along and join the activities, organisers say.

Those involved say the philosophy of Pukeko Playgroup is based around meeting new people, having a cuppa and a chat in a relaxed, comfortable environment while visitors’ children are provided with a range of activities and equipment to explore, learn and grow with their parents alongside. “It’s a wonderful addition to the Aka Aka area, to be able to have a Playgroup on offer for the community.,” one of those involved said last week. “The doors opened to the public thre weeks ago after a blessing was given from Ra Brown, Bryce Flavell and Stuart Muir. “Pukeko Playgroup will be open every Friday during School terms from 12.30pm till 3.00pm and run by gold coin donation. New shows on offer at Motat Motat visitors are set to experience an exciting explosion of sound this school holidays with Motat’s ‘Sound FX’ Holiday Experience from 13-28 July. Children and adults alike can immerse themselves in fun activities designed to highlight the important role that sound plays in our lives. Motat Museum Director, Michael Frawley explains that Holiday Experiences are designed to be an interactive experience for children that is both fun and educational and will keep the whole family entertained over the school holidays. The highlight of the Sound FX Holiday Experience will

be the ‘The Motat Radio Show’; an immersive play that invites kids to join in on the performance. Other interactive activities include bringing a silent vintage movie to life by creating sound effects, discovering the concept of onomatopoeia through a cartoon story telling workshop and crafting a musical rain stick. Additionally, the Fonterra Science Roadshow returns to Motat these school holidays, with two live daily shows; ‘Balloons and Bernoulli,’ an investigation into pressure, and ‘The Scientific Pantry,’ relating science to typical pantry foods and liquids. “We’re excited that the

Fonterra Science Roadshow is coming back for the third year in a row; it gives our visitors an interactive insight into the world of science. “The shows are relatable and entertaining to visitors of all ages and even parents have been known to learn a thing or two from their shows,” says Museum Director, Michael Frawley. Visitors can enjoy ‘Sound FX’ and the Fonterra Science Roadshow as part of their general admission fee to Motat.
