LIVE MUSIC & GOOD FOOD AT THE FLEECE

Malthouse Theatre Presents NAMATJIRA

Reopening after undergoing a complete renovation, the Fleece Hotel has been transformed into a bustling and vibrant hub for great food, atmosphere and fantastic live music without losing its strong Australian values as the’ local’ but rather taking on a reinvention of the classic pub.

A white man and an Aboriginal man sit together in a boat in a creek bed. Together they paint the landscape around them. This is the moment that captures the symbolism, the hope and the simplicity of Albert Namatjira’s friendship with his mentor, Rex Battarbee.

Chef Trevor Schneider delivers culinary delicasies from an extensive menu serving up wholesome proportions using fresh local produce and offering comparable levels of service one would expect to find from city restaurants. Grab a great pub meal, meet for drinks after work or perhaps sit down to fine dining. An impressive range of wines and spirits, as well as local and imported beers compliment the tapas, bar and restaurant menus. With the innovative rooftop deck inclusive of its own fireplace, the Fleece Hotel is a definite must visit South Melbourne destination.

BigHart’s stage production of Namatjira traces the lifetime journey of our great water-colourist Albert Namatjira and in doing so reminds us of his immeasurable influence and legacy. In this production his legacy is made even more concrete by the presence of Namatjira’s own family members from his Hermansburg community on stage. Together they draw a vast, panoramic landscape across the theatre wall, while the charismatic Trevor Jamieson tells us Albert Namatjira’s story, one written through with all the varieties of experience life can offer.

Every Thursday night you can get your toes tapping, lips smacking and dance moves cracking with live music featuring some of Australia’s best musicians. The line up for August includes:

From his childhood in a Lutheran mission near Alice Springs to his international successes in the art world and recognition as the first Aboriginal citizen of Australia, through to his final years of illness and frustration.

4 August Robert James Kirk Band 11 August Billy Miller and The Love Bros. 18 August The Straight Shooters 25 August Gary Young Band - tbc 1 September Mick Pealing Band

Directed by Scott Rankin for BIG hART in collaboration with the community of Hermannsburg from which Namatjira came, Namatjira is the reappropriation of a story by the descendants who are its legacy, and an uplifting vision of Australia that might still come to pass.
