Celebrating the Art of Storytelling 2D, the Northern Ireland Comics Festival, is Ireland’s longest running annual comics event. The festival is organised and supported by the Verbal Arts Centre, Ireland’s leading centre for literature and storytelling. 2D celebrates comic book culture and works to promote and support comic art and visual storytelling. 2D 2013 will be the largest comics show ever staged in Northern Ireland. The theme of the festival this year is ‘The Art of Storytelling’ and the festival promises to be the best ever with a bigger line-up of guests and events than ever before. We have FREE schools’ workshops and talks on Thursday and Friday, Evening Sessions for the mature audience on Friday and Saturday, with the showcase of the entire festival being the 2-day Comics Fair on Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd June. The Comics Fair is FREE to attend and will play host to a great mix of comic stalls, children’s workshops, talks and other activities. Come along to meet the world’s best comic creators, who will be sketching, signing and selling loads of cool stuff. We will also have fantastic prize giveaways and spot prizes for cool costumes - Dress to Impress! Running alongside the Comics Fair we have the massively popular Heroes & Legends show, which visits the city for the first time and features a brilliant variety of characters, sets and props from Sci-Fi & Fantasy Movies, TV and Comics. Force Training will also be here as part of Heroes & Legends, where you can learn to be a Jedi! (see inside for all ticket details). As part of 2D, the Verbal Arts Centre will also play host to an amazing exhibition of the Film and TV Concept and Storyboarding work of artist William Simpson, who has worked on everything from Game of Thrones to Batman and Transformers. 2D has something for all ages and interests, come along and join in the fun!

Gary Erskine and Mhairi Stewart Come up with your own characters for the Star Wars universe and pitch them to Star Wars artist Gary Erskine and writer Mhairi Stewart.

For Schools. Award-winning local publishers Uproar Comics will be giving a talk about how their company was started and quickly developed into a runaway success. They will also be giving a sneak peek behind the scenes at how they make their hit comic ‘Zombies Hi’.

Tony Lee New York Times best-selling author Tony Lee (Dr Who, Star Trek, Superboy) will be talking about being a reluctant reader as a boy and how he overcame this to enjoy books and eventually become a successful writer. Tony will create a story with the help of the class in this inspiring, interactive session.

Visual Storyteller: The Film & TV Work of William Simpson

Art Exhibition 22 May – 14 June Verbal Arts Centre

Will Simpson is a local artist, originally from Prehen, Derry/Londonderry, who has established an international reputation as a visual storyteller. Will has worked on some of the world’s biggest comic books such as Batman, Transformers and Judge Dredd but in recent years has worked more and more behind the scenes for Film & TV productions. 6

This exhibition will feature Will’s concept and storyboarding work from big budget movies such as ‘City of Ember’ and ‘Your Highness’, as well as the ‘Mighty Celt’. The show will also celebrate Will’s current work for the Emmy and Bafta award winning HBO TV Show, ‘Game of Thrones’, based on the New York Times bestselling series. It will feature the character designs and storyboards he produces for the series, shown beside stills from the HBO show to demonstrate how the storyboarding process works.

Keynote talk: Herb Trimpe US Comics artist Herb Trimpe is a comics industry legend, not least for being the first artist to draw the most famous member of the X-Men; Wolverine, but also for his seminal run on the Incredible Hulk in the 19 0s. Herb has also worked on a host of other top titles and characters and will be discussing his career and his thoughts on the industry with host & leading comics journalist, Chris Thompson. Early Registration is advised as places are limited.

Nicholas Gurewitch is an award-winning creator who produced one of the most popular web comics of recent times, the Perry Bible Fellowship. The strip became a phenomenon and was then syndicated in countless magazines internationally, including the Guardian. He has collected and published his strips as a book, which became one the fastest selling books in Amazon’s history. Nicholas is a versatile and gifted storyteller and has recently produced work for the BBC and Marvel Comics. Early Registration is advised as places are limited.

Talk: The Losers The Losers was a seminal, award winning comic that topped the New York Times graphic books list. The main dream team behind this top drawer publication, writer Andy Diggle, artist Jock and top DC Comics editor Will Dennis reunite to discuss the success of the comic, their experiences working together and the subsequent Hollywood movie adaptation. Beastly Drawings workshop with Chris Judge Hear Chris read from one of his books and learn how to draw the Lonely Beast! Chris Judge is an illustrator and children’s picture book author from Dublin. His first book The Lonely Beast won the Specsavers Irish Children’s Book of the Year 2011 in Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards with his second book The Great Explorer published in 2012. Laura Howell is a super talented comic writer/artist and is famous for being the first female artist to have worked for the Beano. Laura has also worked for the Dandy as well as countless other top comics. She will giving plenty of great hints and tips during this fun session, as she teaches how to create quality cartoons and comic strips.

Will Sliney is a true comics superstar! He was the regular artist on ‘Star Wars: the Clone Wars’ and was recently signed up by the mighty Marvel Comics, to work on Fearless Defenders! He created the hit graphic novel ‘Celtic Warrior: the Legend of Cú Chulainn’ a current Irish TImes bestseller.
