WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE TEAM Hello to all the beautiful readers of 2Cents! This issue of the magazine would be a special one for me as it ’s my last. Yes, I’ll be leaving my heart with 2Cents and furthering myself to better opportunities. 2 years and 4 months I have been here and there hasn’t been a time where I didn’t regret being a writer. It has exposed me to so many things and learn along on how to be independent, confident and most importantly to stay happy. With that being said, here are some of the best articles to craft for all of you to read on! Cafes are pretty much a trendy thing to do and it ’s the next best thing to showing off to your friends on how happening you are. However, visiting a themed concept cafe would take you to another level of cool. Unique concept themed cafes around the world was an interesting piece to write as you find out so much of the creativity people have when it comes to expanding out of the box. Next, one can’t go anywhere without my love for food! I’ve had the pleasure of exploring to two places for this month. One was in Terrasse Cafe and Bistro where you’ll be splurged by their cocktail mixes, pretty European type of ambiences and of course their food speciality. Lastly, was this modern colonial cuisine in Manja Restaurant right in the heart of the city. It ’s complexity in the dish is shown through its bursting flavours and fusion of Malaysian flavour into their western type of dishes. Perfect place for a night out with loved ones. Incorporating my love for psycho thriller movies, I’ve even compiled 10 totally twisted AF movies for all to enjoy and must watch. I’m definitely a sucker for movies that would blow my mind and here are just some of the movie. If I were to tell all films I love, even one whole magazine wouldn’t be fitting. Writing about something I love has been the icing on the cake and for all to read, share and enjoy has been a ride of joy for me. It ’s been a great pleasure inspiring, educating and keeping all of you entertaining. Those of you who love to write, my advice is to start doing it. Cafes nowadays are a booming business in the food and beverage department. Almost everywhere you go, they’ll be a new cafe opening up somewhere nearby you. It’s sort of like a norm now where most cafes are being branded as a hipster or the in-trend thing to start a business with. However, for me, cafes are more of a place to keep my friends and family close and also that one book you’ve been dying to finish in a peaceful place and cafe is the perfect spot. However, because of the common cafe vibe, there are some ‘think-over-the-box’ cafe owners who dare to go beyond the normality of how a cafe should be. Here are some of the quirkiest cafes around the world.

A. The Kid-Mai Death Cafe, Bangkok The Kid-Mai Death Cafe looks more like the scene of a funeral than a place you’d want to hang out with your friends. Black is the dominant colour, but that’s probably the least morbid thing about this establishment. Wreath of flowers are used as floral decorations and on the menu, you have names like “ageing”, “illness” and even “death”. Plus, to earn a discount, there’s a coffin for visitors to lie down into! Yikes! However, for the owner of the cafes, they prefer the term “death awareness cafe” to encourage people to enjoy every moment of their life.

B. The New Lucky Restaurant, India Have you ever imagined what it’s like to dine with the dead? Well, you can do that in The New Lucky Restaurant in Ahmadabad, India. This place is built literally around a cemetery so you get to have the full experience too. You may think it’s creepy but this place became popular due to its unusual settings. The restaurant owner, Krishnan Kutti didn’t want to disrespect over the gravestones when he first bought the property. Every morning Krishnan would make sure he cleans and puts flowers on them.

C. Fortezza Medicea, Italy What could be worse than death when you’re alive? Serving time in prison. In 2007, a restaurant opened in Fortezza Medicea, near Pisa, Italy. To make this prison cafe more believable, the wait staff are the inmates with some serving life sentences. You’d think that it’s scary to have your food served by real-life murderers, however, this restaurant is extremely popular and some even have to book weeks in advance to get a spot on the table. The concept of this is mainly a rehabilitation program for the inmates.

D. Cannibal Sushi, Tokyo Would you even dare to visualize yourself being like Hannibal Lecter that eats human flesh? Surprisingly now you can but it’s not like what you think. The beautiful tradition of serving sushi on the body of a naked woman - which is only a replica - where guest can “endeavour” them. The skilled waiter would dissect the body in front of the visitor with the help of scalpel and expect to see bloody sauce spilling out with the help of special effects.

A. The Owl Cafe, Tokyo While Japanese are creative in redefining the ordinary, owl cafes are a concept that is unique about Japan. There are about four owl cafes in the Tokyo area. You can pet the birds and take photos (no flash photography) with them. About $12 will even get you an hour-long session with the birds of prey. It’s almost like a themepark attraction than an animal cafe.

B. The Huskitory, Melaka Who doesn’t love dogs? Especially huskies. Out of the many cafes in Malaysia, one must experience this place. The Huskies are all well-trained and groomed by the owners. Some of this Huskies are also award championship winners in a dog competition. If you’re wondering if you can kidnap the dogs back home, you can’t as these Huskies are all privately owned. Be there about 5-6 pm or 7-8pm daily for their feeding time too.

C. Les Cafe Des Chats, Paris Love to purr all the way to Paris and drink coffee with cats? Here’s your chance to do so if you’re a cat lover. In 2013, Parisians witnessed the opening of France’s first ever cat café in the Marais. Ever since it’s opening, the place is popular and is always high on demand to the owners would recommend booking before coming in. It’s so popular that they had to turn away 300 potential customers because it was so packed.

D. Little Zoo Cafe, Bangkok Not only will you be able to see the typical cat and dog type of animals but sticking true to its name, you have exotic animals to see too. Little Zoo Cafe serves as a way for potential exotic pet owners to familiarize themselves because these animals takes more patience. They also serve drinks and snacks. One of the animals you can witness if you visit this place are such as hamsters, corgis, racoon, meerkat, fennec fox, chinchilla and many more.

A. POISON APPLE, BANDAR SUNWAY Upon arriving, you’ll be bewildered with the creation of the iconic Lord of the Rings’ Hobbit door -which is customized by the team – with a signboard written as Poison Apple. As soon as you enter into the restaurant, you’ll feel like a Princess or King entering into a land of fairy tale. The ambiance does feel like you’re entering one of your childhood storybooks that have turned into reality. It’s a place that’s full of not just one fairy tale story but a tremendous amount of it. Picking up inspiration from Snow White, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Jack and the Beanstalk, ogres, grim characters and many more.

b. BREAKING BAD, LONDON Someone call Jesse Pinkman and Heisenberg because the chemistry has gone a level up. Breaking Bad had created a large following for its unique narrative. As you enter, the renovation of the interior is fitted like Walter White’s lab and the drinks come in various unique concoctions that would make you relive your favourite television moments.

C. GIGER- BAR, SWITZERLAND The fascinating thing about this place is probably the intricacy of the design and feel you’ll get once you enter in. It might feel like your dinner might pop out of your chest mid-meal and scatter around the room. For those of you are unfamiliar with Giger, he is the Swiss surrealist artist who did the set designs and visual effects for the film Alien.

D. CENTRAL PERK, SINGAPORE The F.R.I.E.N.D.S themed cafe is certainly a big hit and talked about when it first opened. The team led by young owners has made this possible through a crowdfunding exercise which led to the interest of investors. You can take a wonderful memory lane when pieces of Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler and Ross found all around. Who knows you’ll be serenaded by Phoebe’s “Smelly Cat” song while you’re there too? Well, that dream might just come true.

E. ALICE IN WONDERLAND, TOKYO In the Tokyo suburb of Shinjuku, lies a magical world that will transport you back to Alice In Wonderland themed cafe. Patrons would be in for an afternoon tea with a twist of immersive decors and characters mascots. Nothing beats Japan when it comes to themed cafes. There is also a Wonderland Cafe in Nottingham.

A. Modern Toilet, Taiwan Some of you might be grossed out by this concept let alone to eat in one. The meals here off their extensive menu are all presented in miniature toilet bowls and resemble steaming hot diarrhea. This definitely sounds like a fear factor challenge. You can upgrade your drink to have it served out of a urinal. Mind over matter guys!

A. The Earthquake Cafe, Spain Want to shake up your eating style in a cafe, no pun intended? Well, this may be a dangerous place to eat but fret not, no one has ever been injured… yet. The dining here comes with a nerve-wracking 7.8 magnitude earthquake as the cafe is built to withstand such Richter scale numbers. The plates and glasses are heavy so they would stay put and the staff are required to wear safety gear, though mostly for the entertainment purposes of it. Of course when the “show” starts, the food and drinks are known to spill a little so dress accordingly.

B. RED SEA STAR UNDERWATER CAFE, ISRAEL Dining with the waters sounds more like a unique cafe on its own. Situated in Eliat, Israel, this is the perfect spot for honeymooners, romantic couples or those looking for a unique experience for date night. It comprised of two areas; surface area and an underwater area. The surface area also offers a fantastic view of the Gulf of Aqaba. As for the underwater area, this 5 feet below sea level, offers a gastronomic and excotic food while seeing sea creatures swim. Fun fact: this place is the world’s first underwater restaurant.

A. Cabbages & Condoms, Bangkok Yes, you saw that right. This is a concept restaurant in Bangkok, Thailand that was created by non- profit association. The restaurant promotes family planning, uses condoms as décor on the walls and instead of being offered an after-dinner mint, you’re offered an after-dinner condom. I had the pleasure of coming to this cafe and all I can say is Thailand never fail to surprise me!

B. TWIN STARS IN MOSCOW, RUSSIA You might think you’re seeing double after all those shots of vodka, but it’s actually because the entire waitstaff is made up of identical twins. The restaurant was inspired by a 1964 Russian film called Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors, which is about a girl who looks in a mirror and sees her twin in an alternate universe. After throwing a few back, you might actually start seeing quadruple.

C. JUNK CAFE, PENANG Most people would throw any junk that has been piling in their house but not this unique cafe in Penang. Easily one of the most fascinating cafe places, this place stores vintage collection of all sorts like wooden old school table and benches, rusty musical instruments and funky antiques you have never seen in a long time. Plus, their burgers and coffees are what makes this cafe an entertaining one.

D. DINING IN THE DARK, KUALA LUMPUR Located in the party streets in Bukit Bintang lies an almost blind dining experience. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a restaurant in total darkness with every movement, taste and breath is an adventure. Diners can also look forward to their 4-courses surprise menu are specially designed by renowned Chef Werner and team. The main theme to dining in the dark would be to take a unique approach to appreciate oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s food.

Iran With 82 million inhabitants, Iran is the world's 18th most populous country. Due to Islam being its official religion, they are tied to the Sharia Law. Which means every Muslim in Iran should be doing their daily prayers, fasting and give donations to the poor. That doesn’t seem all too bad but when it hit is when Iranians are prohibited from doing any actions or any sort of propaganda against the government. Going against such things would result in huge consequences.

You can only have an option of 28 styles of haircut that is approved by Kim Jong-Un, with men having 10 styles to choose from and women with 18 various styles. When it comes to fashion, jeans are a big no-no as it deemed as a symbol of capitalism. Even, North Koreans must not smile or talk loudly on the 8th of June. This day was when North Korean President Kim II-sung died. As well as on his birthday (April 15). Those who don’t do this will be sent to labor camps.

Food We set out to have our first dinner in Kitakyushu in this famous local area. The soup was very sweet and delighted all of us with the taste. The sashimi was very different from all the other times I’ve eaten it as it has a very fresh, thick meat and presents a vibrant flavour. Definitely was satisfied with the meal!

Iceland

A land that is defined by its dramatic landscape with volcanoes, geysers, hot springs and lava fields. One of the main attractions in Iceland that draws in a crowd of more than 2.3 million visitors per year is the Blue Lagoon. The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa in southwestern Iceland. The spa is located in a lava field near GrindavĂk on the Reykjanes Peninsula, in a location favourable for geothermal power, and is supplied by water used in the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power station.

Another attraction is the Diamond Beach. One of the most unique things about the beach is that it never looks the same. Even if you just visited the day before the beach will have changed completely and the natural ice sculptures, the icebergs, will have reformed, melted away and new ones appeared. Many of the icebergs are over 1,000 years old and have made their way through the grand lagoon first as enormous ice blocks and now smaller bergs enjoying their last moments until their join with the Atlantic ocean. The icebergs glisten on the beach giving it the name Diamond beach.

How long have you been on TikTok and what inspired you to try it?

I’ve always been a big fan of social media, as it always piqued my interest. Making comical and dance/song videos really highlight my personality so, with TikTok, it’s the perfect fit for me. I have been on TikTok for about a year and a half now since early 2018. For a video that is only 15 seconds long and allows me to link my other social media platforms makes it easier for me too. It allows me to distinguish between short-form content and longer-form ones, which gives my followers an option to choose which content they want to consume.

If you were to describe Penang in a sentence, what would it be?

As a Penangite, I can safely say that it is impossible to summarize the beauty of Penang into a single sentence. WHY LISTENING IS SO IMPORTANT? Written by: Natasha Christopher If you ever wonder why certain people goes to this one person to rant or just to let their emotions out, you could say it’s from trust. Yes, confiding in a person you really trust is truly important as well but the main thing they keep going back to the same person besides they might offer good advice is the fact they are good listeners. You know how sometimes people don’t want a solution but rather a listening aid for their problems may it be from stress at work, relationships or family matters, all they need is for someone to value them through the art of listening. I had my fair share of wanting people to listen to me when I have an issue, but then they turn the other cheek and it always upsets me even more than I already have. Some of the examples if you want to be a better listener for your loved ones is; learn to not look, reply or engage in your phone when they are talking, constantly looking at your watch or even looking distracted or interrupting them. All of that will make them feel like their issue is boring. No one likes when that happens. Being unheard results in feelings of disconnection and loneliness. Essentially, human beings just wants to be understood. Being in a psychology major as well, it has taught me to be a better listener and cater to people’s problem. For example, while in college I was exposed to a subject where you have to learn to speak in a counseling session manner and through that course, I’ve figured that you can know so much about people when you start listening to them. Ever since then, whenever a friend comes to me to pour their feelings out, I’ve adopted this lifestyle of speaking less and listening more. It works wonders, I tell you.

For example, active listening requires question be thrown to them but in a subtle way. Like, “Are you saying that _______”, “What I heard you say was ______”, “Did you mean that _______.” This would bring you a deeper understanding of the issue the person came up to you and be able to help them by feeling good even though you were only just listening.

Paraphrase

When you restate, in your own words, what the speaker is saying, you prove that you’re listening carefully – after all, you wouldn’t be able to repeat anything if you weren’t paying attention.

Nonverbal communication is the process of sending and receiving messages without using words, either spoken or written. Also called manual language. About 60-70% of our communication involves non-verbal. It’s important to know this just so you see whether to encourage the speaker to open up, be supportive or many more. Observation is also important.

It’s one thing to listen to them but it’s another thing when you judge them. No one likes to be judged on what they are going through. Puts a negative circle on the whole thing and in turn, you’ll be labelled as the narrow minded one. Always make it your goal to be as open minded as you can.

Make Eye Contact

Showing that you are paying full attention to them can be done through the power of eye contact. If you don’t look at the person that you’re speaking with, it shows you almost don’t care about him or her feelings. Even if you are listening

Canard a l’Orange, RM 42 This French classic main course stunned us with how brilliant the combination of flavours were. It simply consists of French roast duck, orange sauce and sides of salad. Naturally one of the naturally trickiest things was to ace the orange sauce so its acidity doesn’t overpower the whole dish. Luckily for Terrasse Cafe&Bistro, they nailed it in terms of flavour, presentation and the juiciness of the duck. The sauce and meat pairs well together. The roast Canard a l’Orange, RM 42 duck was generous in portion and juicy for most part. Can be shared with 2 people.

I’ve always loved aglio olio. Plus it with seafood and my heart is taken. For this rendition of the seafood aglio olio, my verdict would be that I love how generous the seafood portion are. Just like that, I’m sold. The aglio olio has the right texture and taste that isn’t too overwhelming nor is the spaghetti noodles were oily. With cherry tomatoes, herbs, clams, squid and prawns into the Seafood Aglio Olio, RM 36 mix, it ought to be a nice touch of balance when you indulge in one of their cocktails.

You should try this drink because it has cili padi infused in it too. Kicks in a punch with tasty flavours.

As for the hummus, it is done with black sesame, dotted with dollops of fire roasted romesco (bell pepper sauce), goat cheese puree,tomato, grape and olive salad with handmade sweet potato chips. The puree mixed with almost everything else is just soothing to the mouth. The way it just sort of blends in perfectly with everything else is just amazing on its own. The black sesame gives it a hint of sweetness but balancing out the goat cheese flavours itself. Dip the sweet potato chips in and you’ll have a nibbles platter. Can be shared by two people.

Tawau Prawn Terrine (RM 34) Their prawns are obtained straight from Borneo and it’s all wild sea prawn instead of farm prawn which means it’s all antibiotic and hormone free. The wild sea prawns are diced in a tangy aioli of Tibetan Pepper, tomato chives, sweetened shallots, oelok chili sauce and includes with creamy ebiko avocado with caviar plus herb dressings. When it comes to Tibetan Pepper, what differs it from other peppers is when you bite on it, this pepper gives you a tingle or somewhat of a shock to the taste senses which isn’t too spicy. Wild sea prawn are generally a little bit sweeter so the flavours doesn’t require much effort in terms of getting the taste from this dish. It comes with a house made white bread which enables you to soak up that last sauce. Although some of the ingredients are foreign to you but you can definitely taste the Malaysian flavours in there.

The ten cha green tea gives you that smokey taste as it is chargrilled that sits adaptly to the other colourful ingredients and the lobster meat is just fresh from its core.

Taiping Duck Done Two Ways (RM 116) All of the duck here are provided from Taiping hence what it’s called in the menu. It’s all organic free range duck that is done in two gorgeous preparations. One is grind overnight with kiwi tenderiser and fresh apple puree. Then they sous vide the duck to maintain its juiciness pink of the duck with better infusion of the natural tenderiser. Next, is a dry rub of 5 spice, yellow bean, and ginger root then pan roasted to give the colour on the skin of the duck. Lastly, it is accompanied by a Japanese Teppan style garlic fried rice and mango salsa. Be sure to dip your duck into their home made chilli oil infusion and sambal tamarind kicap sauce for all you spicy lovers. The sous vide duck presents bursting of flavour with chilli oil. The tenderness of the meat as it melts in your mouth is something out of this world. Give the pan roasted duck a try too as it’ll take you back to your favourite hawker stall Malaysian flavours. It’s a big portion that can be shared with 2 to 3 people. Three words for this dish, stunning to its core. (Okay, maybe four words then!)

Manja emphasis on quality and local product/produce comes out through its amazing flavours where people from east to west can come together to dine a fusion of colonial cuisine that would be impossible to blend but Manja did it. Totally Messed Up and Twisted AF Movies If there is something Halloween have in common with movies is how gory and twisted the world is. Think about it, every once a year, you style your favourite characters and spook people. Have you ever thought that maybe the character that they pose during Halloween is something they’ve always hidden in themselves? Or an identity that they can be free to channel openly during the month of October? Yes, sounds messed up, right? Well, it’s the same way that goes when I watch movies that has the most shocking twist and disturbing scenes. Hence, the super intense thought sentences to the start of this article. When it comes to watching movies, I have a soft spot for choosing a movie that an insane plot twist and sometimes disturbing (depends on the level of it). Let’s give an example of the highest grossing R-Rated movie so far, The Joker(2019). Todd Phillips’ direction in this brilliant film takes its spin on the darker side of mental illness and what the Joker (played by Joaquin Phoenix) has to go through. I remember leaving the theatre feeling so overwhelmed with emotions of sadness and how cruel the world actually is. For any movie to have that kind of negative impact on me and for many, it shows how disturbing it is to the point I don’t know if I can watch it for the second time. Don’t get me wrong, The Joker overall is such a brilliant piece from its cinematography, acting, and the built-up storyline but I may need to prepare myself to watch it a second time. Only goes to show the effect one has when watching this movie. Let’s not even delve into the TV series called Black Mirror. You can never binge watch this series and if you did, you might just be a tad creepy. If you’ve watched it, you’ll know. That’s the beauty about movies at times. It moves you in ways that you never thought you could feel, act or do. When it comes to totally messed up movies, it might just move you in the most f**ked up way possible and I say this with no filter and hesitation. *THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THIS LIST!*

Most psychology students definitely would have heard of this real life experiment that was carried out by the American psychologist, Professor Philip Zimbardo and creator of the Stanford Prison experiment. The experiment itself is so messed up because it’s where Zimbardo conducted an environment where he hires college students that pretend to be either prisoners or guards. They will need to be in this experiment for a certain amount of weeks, however, due to power getting to the pretend guards mind and the thinking the pretend prisoners to be as real, they had to stop the experiment. In this movie, you can see how the human mind changed when you’re being put to a role and stuck through it. The amount of torture the prisoners goes through as well as that sense of leadership from the guards certainly created lots of reasons why this true story film is controversial.

By now you would know Jordan Peele’s iconic Us movie that hit cinemas everywhere earlier this year. From winning an Academy award for Original Screenplay for the mind-blowing movie, Get Out, Jordan Peele is no stranger to producing even more twisted movies. With the film Us- which stars Lupita Nyong’o and Jordan Peele himself- delves into the mistaken identity, doppelgangers and a whole lotta keeping yourself on the edge of your seat throughout the entire movie. This ambitious horror film sends a complete shocker to the viewers with its creepy portrayal of the characters, modernized iconic scenes from movies and music videos too. In an interview with Empire podcast, Jordan Peele breaks down on the some of the behind messages of Us. “This movie’s about maybe the monster is you. It’s about us, looking at ourselves as individuals and as a group.” Goosebumps just reading this.

This is where the husband/father (played by Sam Worthington) becomes convinced that the hospital is hiding something. The man panics and frantically searched for the entire hospital if that means holding important authority figure captives to save her wife and daughter. But what is so messed up is the ending part. It makes you question, is life but a reality or a dream? The guy who directed The Machinist, Brad Anderson takes us all through an intense journey filled with conviction that the hospital really up to no good. After watching it, you’ll feel hmmm literally fractured.

Being a film that has earned great reviews, Hereditary talks about when the matriarch of the Graham family passes away, the daughter and grandchildren begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about the grandmother’s past. Toni Collette stars in this supernatural psychological horror film raises the bar with her portrayal of emotional agony of losing someone to being in the heat of trying to reconnect back with her family through a supernatural calling. The ending of the film does not fail to disappoint in terms of of cult came to being with wanting the eldest male child, Peter to take the reigns as the prince Paimon as it’s called to take over the kingdom, in a sense. It’s clear that the grandmother was in a cult attempting to grant Paimon a body in return for wealth or power and prepare Peter’s body. Also prepare for some scenes with jump scares and creepy noise.

Gerald’s Game is one of Stephen King’s classic stories. You know it’s bound to be twisted as heck. It starts of as when a woman accidentally kills her husband during a kinky game gone wrong. She was handcuffed to her bed with no hope of rescue, she then begin hearing voices and seeing strange vision including her late husband who she thought is still alive. You also get to learn on the conversations she has with herself and about her dark past via flashbacks through her relationship with her father. This psychological horror thriller film centers the whole shoot on her bed being tied with dialogues that you need to pay attention to. The ending of the film would make you imagine and understand why things happened the way they are.

In order to be out of the elevator, they need to face the revelation of their secrets. As the story goes, frightening events turned into terror when they begin to realize that one of their number is Lucifer himself. It all takes the dialogue between the passengers and the movement and physical action from the elevator ride that makes it an exciting and suspenseful movie altogether. According to Screenrant review of the Devil it says “What Shyamalan has crafted feels more like his Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs days, rather than the frowned-upon latter half of his work portfolio. Devil reminds me of a time when the M. Night just wanted to tell entertaining stories that bent genre conventions, rather than stories that served as thin veils for his preachy or egotistical sermons.”

Celebrating its 70th anniversary this year since its launch in 1949, Onitsuka Tiger continues to appeal to fashionistas around the world with a contemporary collection that combines fashion with sports, and heritage with innovation. For the shoes, Fujita updated the plain-toe “TAI-CHI-REB™ shoes” which were inspired by Tai Chi shoes. “Fashion is free” says Fujita. “That’s how I could maximize the attractiveness of both brands by destroying our fixed image in a good way”. For the color, he used black. light gray stitches were added to the plain black toe to express originality insusceptible to anything with monotone.
