CITY ICON TURNS FIFTY

Not just an icon of our city, not just a place in our hearts, but a building that says so much about what we have achieved as a community – the Christchurch Town Hall is so deserving of a marked celebration. The inaugural Christchurch Town Hall Gala Ball is proudly hosted by Venues Ōtautahi and marks 50 years since opening its doors to the public in September 1972. And best of all, you’re invited! As the first year of this annual event, it promises to be a night packed with shared memories and experiences collected over the years. Over four hours, you’ll journey through the music of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and The Eastern and Friends, performing songs from 50 years of the acoustic genius of this venue. Venues Ōtautahi Executive Chef Dan Shanks and the culinary team will be serving an extensive range of canapés, bowls, desserts, and beverages to be enjoyed throughout the evening, showcasing the wonderful produce and suppliers of our Waitaha, Canterbury region. Think Kaikōura blue cod and scampi sesame toast, lamb presse with confit onions, and wild radish. For the sweet lovers, there’s white chocolate fromage fraise and lemon thyme meringues, amongst others. A selection of drinks from Cassels Brewery, Main Divide, Moa, and Crater Rim means you’ll be spoilt for choice. This cocktail event is a night backed by the music of some of the greats who have performed on the hallowed town hall stage; Tom Petty, U2, Norah Jones, REM, Santana, The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Crowded House, Shapeshifter, just to name a few. There is also a philanthropic vein to the gala – ten per cent of ticket proceeds will be donated to the Christchurch City Mission to assist their wonderful efforts in supporting our community at a time needed more than ever. This gala is set to be a true celebration of one of Ōtautahi Christchurch’s most loved places.
