EXPLORE Elmwood

Elevated offerings in Elmwood

Our city has pockets of wonderful everywhere you look. The growth and evolution of Ōtautahi have led the way toward satellite hubs manifesting in our suburbs, where one can grab a coffee, run a few essential errands and, of course, indulge in some retail therapy.

One such spot is the Elmwood shops on Normans Road, where you will find a few old favourites alongside new developments with leading local brands. Grab some of our city’s best fish and chips or a brew at the Elmwood Trading Company, or head down to visit the bookstore pooch, Mr Fitzgerald, at The Clocks Bookshop. While we’ve featured a few on these pages, there’s much more to experience at Elmwood! The recent development of the site where the former Hands craft store was located was spearheaded by John and Lynette McFadden, Cameron Bailey and Chris Kennedy. This new precinct has helped elevate the offerings in Elmwood and now houses luxe linen brand M.M Linen – this is something the team are immensely proud to have facilitated. If you haven’t experienced all that Elmwood has to offer, now’s the time.

THE CLOCKS BOOKSHOP An independent bookshop specialising in crime, cooking, and children’s books, with a terrific general fiction and nonfiction range too. There’s plenty for the young reader to browse, with more than 2,500 books. Foodies can choose from 100s of cooking titles, and for the crime and mystery enthusiast, there’s the classics to the modern masters.

Innovate Artist Askew One DateJune 2021 Location Ara Campus, Madras Street

Disguised amid fluid and merging reams of red, blue, black, and white, the word ‘innovate’ is revealed in stacked layers, the letters providing a structural quality as the ribbons of colour seemingly melt and pull in different directions across the wall. Innovate was painted on the Ara Institute of Canterbury’s campus by Elliot ‘Askew One’ O’Donnell, one of Aotearoa’s most celebrated and accomplished urban artists, in June 2021. The artist, raised in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland but now based in the United States, painted the mural while in Ōtautahi for Continuum, a joint exhibition with his wife, photographer Jasmine Gonzalez, at Sydenham’s Fiksate Gallery. The glitching mural extends Askew One’s investigation of the power of words and the confluence of digital imagemaking techniques and analogue processes, ideas borne out of his grounding in graffiti. Celebrating the importance of innovative thinking in education, the artist also warns of the dangers of constant innovation, imbuing the work with a dichotomous quality, one of daring beauty and fragile combustion.
