Find Your Inner Nerd Day

Find Your Inner Nerd Day

Saturday, August 23

A celebration of all things geeky, quirky and passionate! Live long and nerd on!

What is it?

Celebrated annually on August 23, this day encourages everyone to unashamly celebrate their nerd passions: be it coding, comic collecting, board gaming, sci-fi or tech tinkering.

It originated from tech influencer Beth Z (“Your Nerdy Best Friend”), with the date tied to the first-ever Twitter hashtag, introduced in 2007 by Chris Messina.

Why Nerding out is Great

Embracing nerd culture promotes curiosity, lifelong learning and creativity. It also builds community as people bond over shared passions and peculiar interests.

The Library = Nerd HQ

The Library is your perfect accomplice for nerdy celebration with free or low-cost resources:

1. e-Books, Comics & Audiobooks

Dive into fandoms via platforms like hoopla and CloudLibrary. Access fantasy epics, graphic novels, sci-fi sagas and more no matter your nerd niche.

2. Tabletop RPGs & Gaming Events

Join Dungeons & Dragons or RPG groups hosted by the Library or borrow rulebooks to start your own campaigns.

3. Tech Workshops & Makerspaces

Use 3D printers, sewing machines, vinyl cutters and coding classes available through the CreationStation and MakerSpace.

4. Crafts, Cosplay & Fandom Meetups

Participate in fandom-themed crafts, meetups (like cosplay), trivia nights and seasonal events: look for Comic Book Day or Star Wars Reads Month on the Library’s event calendar.

5. STEM Kits & Science Resources

Check out tools like Raspberry Pi kits or access scientific databases and programming tutorials to fuel your inner inventor.
