12 Monkeys Premieres Monday, April 18, at 9PM on Syfy It’s season 2 of the series based on the 1995 Bruce Willis film. But it’s difficult to understand why it was renewed, as it’s even harder this time around to imagine anyone following the many plot threads. Essentially, James Cole (Aaron Stanford) has been sent from the future back to the present to stop a radical group from unleashing a virus that will wipe out 90 percent of the population. As the second season starts, he’s tracked down a source of the future plague, but he’s also dealing with other time travelers who have different agendas. There’s so much bouncing back and forth in time that, like the characters, you rapidly lose track and stop caring. Time travel is a great concept, but you have to make more of it than this mishmash of uncompelling plots. Verdict Even if you watched the whole first season, you’ll be unlikely to stick around for the second.
Veep Premieres Sunday, April 24, at 10:30PM on HBO As the fifth season kicks off, President Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is trapped in limbo: Her campaign for a full term results in a tie in the Electoral College. Then Nevada proves so close that an automatic recall could be triggered — it’s time to bring out the brass knuckles to secure a clean win. This hilariously raunchy, even meanspirited comedy has the sharpest political edge on TV, mocking the self-importance and sheer cynicism of political insiders. Louis-Dreyfus has the comic flexibility to be both a mean girl and the target of nasty jokes (her problems with a zit in the season’s first episode will have you howling). Emmy winner Tony Hale, as her “body” man, Gary, steals his share of scenes with comic underplaying. Verdict Four more years!
