2. CLIMATE CHANGE AT THE ARCTIC’S EDGE

Once driven nearly to extinction, wolves have made a surprising comeback worldwide. In the 1990s, this keystone predator returned naturally to Canada’s Waterton Lakes National Park, a biodiversity hotspot. Untangle the relationships between wolves, fire, aspen, grass, and elk as you work with members of the Blackfoot tribe to collect data that are shaping national conservation and management policies in preparation for returning bison to one of the wildest, most ecologically intact North American landscapes.

Churchill, Manitoba, known as the “polar bear capital of the world,” is located at the Arctic treeline and is extremely sensitive to small environmental changes that have a huge impact on ecosystems. Warming temperatures have led to shrinking areas of polar sea ice, freshwater wetlands that are drying up, and less extensive winter snowpack that melts earlier. Help researchers to gather evidence of climate change in this extraordinary region to better understand what the future may have in store for the environment.

Sea otter populations fell to near extinction during the fur trade, but have made a critical comeback in Southeast Alaska over the past 50 years. Survey these animals and the seagrass meadows they inhabit as you help scientists explore the relationship between these top predators and their habitat. Unlike cruise ship tourists, you will experience the real Alaska, exploring the natural wonders of the region.

From the riparian canyon and coniferous forests in southeastern Arizona, a suite of small forest owl species seek out tree cavities for their nests. But climate change threatens to disrupt the routine of these species. Join researchers in the Chiricahua Mountains to conduct nesting surveys for several small cavity-nesting owl species, including Flammulated, Elf, and Whiskered Screech Owls, and help to safeguard their future. CELEBRATING AN EXTRAORDINARY VOLUNTEER Minnesota native Warren Stortroen worked in an office as an insurance claims manager for nearly 40 years. While he rarely traveled during his professional life, he spent considerable time planning for his retirement adventures. Warren joined his first Earthwatch expedition in 1996, studying bird species in Costa Rica. Since then, he’s traveled to the Peruvian Amazon, Australia’s Kangaroo Island, the Galapagos, and well beyond— sometimes visiting the same project two or three times. As the number of his Earthwatch expeditions has increased over the years, his reputation has been preceding him to the field sites. Other volunteers feel honored to be on the same research team as him. There’s even a fan club named the “Warren-ites.” In September 2017, Warren hit a major milestone: he joined his 100 th expedition at the Crow Canyon archaeology site in southwest Colorado. It’s incredible what Warren has accomplished over the past 20 years. At age 85, he continues to work alongside teens and millennials tracking killer whales in Iceland, hiking through the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and exploring an active volcano in Nicaragua. Warren is an inspiration—reminding us, time and again, of the importance of stepping up to the challenge.

HEAD FAQS

1) HOW DOES MY CONTRIBUTION MAKE AN IMPACT? Data collected by Earthwatch scientists and volunteers are used to inform environmental policies and management plans that conserve ecosystems and restore biodiversity. In Belize, for example, Earthwatch data helped to establish increased protections for endangered shark species. 2) HOW IS EARTHWATCH COMMITTED TO MY SAFETY? Risk is an inherent part of our work, and every Earthwatch research expedition undergoes a rigorous safety evaluation led by our international program team. In addition, project staff are trained in appropriate emergency response procedures and field safety standards. 3) WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE COST OF THE EXPEDITION? Your contribution covers important research costs, such as equipment, permits and supplies; food, accommodations, and local transport; safety and welfare management; travel medical and emergency evacuation insurance; and preparatory materials. Your contribution and most travel costs are tax-deductible in the U.S. 4) DO I NEED TO HAVE ANY PRIOR SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE? No! You will learn all that you need to know when you get out to the field. 5) WHAT KIND OF PHYSICAL SHAPE DO I NEED TO BE IN? Every research expedition includes an “activity level” designation (from very easy to strenuous). If you have any questions about the fitness requirements, please contact our team at info@earthwatch.org. We’re standing by to help you make the best choice for you!
