The Country Club of Charleston is honored to support the history, tradition and prestige of the game of golf by hosting the 113th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, conducted by the United States Golf Association. Our hope is that this great championship for female amateurs from all over the world will be a memorable experience for the players, spectators and supporters.

For the first time, South Carolina will host the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship on August 5-11, 2013. This honor was bestowed upon one of the most important and historic golf clubs in America since 1899, the Country Club of Charleston. We are proud to host these amazing competitors and to be able to share with you this opportunity to CHAMPION women’s golf and the greater Charleston area.

Together with our local and statewide officials, as well as our corporate and individual supporters, we will welcome the USGA and the viewing public to our state in the finest manner possible.

The tradition began with the Carolinas Amateur Championship, which the club has hosted six times, the first coming in 1911. In addition, the South Carolina Women’s Amateur Stroke-Play Championship has been contested at the club four times, starting with the inaugural event in 1949 and most

recently in 1998.

Golf greats Walter Hagen and Henry Picard have graced the club’s fairways as champions of the PGA Tour’s Charleston Open, hosted here from 1933 through 1937. Picard, a World Golf Hall of Fame member who won 26 PGA Tour events, including the 1938 Masters Tournament and the 1939 PGA Championship, was the head golf professional and a longtime member of the Country Club of Charleston.

The club has hosted eight South Carolina Amateur Championships, with the most recent in 1999 won by future U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover. Since 1946, the club has showcased new talent at its annual Azalea Amateur, with noted champions Dale Morey, Billy Joe Patton, Buddy Alexander, Casey Wittenberg and Webb Simpson.

Charleston’s golf history is forever linked to one of the most outstanding women in golf, Charleston native Beth Daniel, who was voted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2000. Daniel won the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship in 1975 and 1977, and was on the 1976 and 1978 USA Curtis Cup Teams. Daniel joined the LPGA Tour in 1979 and played on eight U.S. Solheim Cup Teams, serving as the U.S. captain in 2009.

Today, Daniel remains committed to the greater Charleston community by hosting the Beth Daniel Junior Azalea, a championship for boys and girls ages 13 to 18, annually at the Country Club of Charleston.

The U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship marked the beginning of women’s competitive golf in this country. Along with the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Open, the Women’s Amateur was one of the USGA’s first three championships conducted in 1895.

The Women’s Amateur has long identified some of golf’s greatest women players, many of whom have gone on to successful professional careers. The most noteworthy champion is Glenna Collett Vare, a lifelong amateur who won the Robert Cox Trophy a record six times. Second only to Vare is JoAnne Gunderson Carner, who won five Women’s Amateur Championships. Other women to secure their place in golf history include Patty Berg, Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Louise Suggs, Beth Daniel, Juli Inkster and Morgan Pressel.

Golfers from around the globe will compete in qualifying sites across the U.S. to gain one of the 156 spots in the championship field. In 2011, the field included 31 foreign players representing Argentina, Australia, Austria, Canada, the People’s Republic of China, Chinese Taipei, Colombia, Germany, Great Britain (England and Scotland), Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. Previous years have included competitors from Jamaica, Peru, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Sweden, Spain and Wales. In short, this event will bring a global focus to the Charleston area.

The U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship is followed by local, national and international media, including a telecast on The Golf Channel.

The Country Club of Charleston is home to nearly 650 members, many of whom are community leaders and charitable donors, and who will lead our volunteer committees.
