WELCOME TO RONDY!

Dear Fur Rendezvous enthusiasts and attendees:

First off, welcome to Anchorage! Fur Rondy is our state’s premier winter festival. The 2023 Fur Rondy marks the 88th year of this incredible festival and celebration. As Mayor of Anchorage, I am thrilled to have our city host this legendary event.

Thanks to the incredible level of snow we have received this winter, I am confident race organizers will have no trouble making excellent trails for the sled dog races.

Fur Rondy is such a wonderful time for our community, so I encourage all residents to get out and enjoy it. Our streets come alive during the season of Fur Rendezvous which means it is time for you to go out and celebrate the season. It is time for Fur Rondy!

Since Fur Rondy first began, in 1935, it has proudly represented the bustling and pioneering spirit of Alaskans. There is nothing quite like the running of the reindeer, traditional Alaska Native blanket toss, Miners and Trapper’s Ball, and of course the worldfamous sled dog races across town.

Fur Rondy has been a pillar in our community, and it will remain one of our prized and cherished community events for generations to come.

I want to thank the dedicated staff and volunteers who make Fur Rondy possible. Have a safe, fun, and healthy Fur Rondy!

As the saying goes, Rondyyyy…Rendezvous come on!

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Welcome to Fur Rendezvous! Now in its 88th year, Rondy has grown from a local sporting event to a world class winter festival that attracts visitors from around our state, and around the world. Last year, Rondy returned to its grand nature with all of the large 4th avenue events viewed by thousands of spectators.

The community enjoyed an uplifting mental break, positive family experiences and provided an economic boost during the slow months of winter. By all accounts Anchorage enjoyed a successful Rondy with no known COVID-19 event related incidents.

Fur Rendezvous’ continued success would not be possible without our community partners, members, sponsors, and volunteers. This year will be a festival for the community with popular 4th Ave events like Running with the Reindeer , outhouse races and sled dog races. The Grand Parade, fun Golden Wheels Carnival Ride amusement rides along with indoor events like Miners and Trappers Country Jam with a Nashville sound and the Bridge Fireworks Party will bring out the best for all. Everyone that participates is responsible for the success of Rondy not only by enjoying the events but contributing to the festival sustainability to future Rondy generations by purchasing a signature pin, merchandise, memberships, donations or taking part in our Rondy Raffle & Silent Auctions.

Fur Rondy is about having fun, hospitality, and the Alaskan Spirit. Whether it’s your first time or one of many, please consider this your personal invitation from the Board of Directors and staff to come out and celebrate Rondy! Hope to see you out there, being responsible with personal actions for the safety of all and for fun in Rondy 2023.

KEYSTONE KOPS OF THE KIWANIS CLUB OF ANCHORAGE

The Keystone Kops: In the mid-1960’s the Kiwanis Club of Spenard (later changed to Kiwanis Club of Anchorage) established the Keystone Kops to be the pin selling “enforcer” for the Fur Rendezvous. These law-abiding volunteers built some portable jails to “lock up” the folks who thought they could wander around our fair city without wearing a Fur Rondy pin or button. Blowing their whistles and swinging their Billy clubs, they keep their eyes open for “resisters without a pin” to encourage their support of the event.

During the Rondy parade, they even arrest children who aren’t wearing a pin. This is usually orchestrated by their parents who were arrested when they were young. (They also take bribes to arrest others who are “flaunting the law.”)

Being a benevolent group, the Keystone Kops allow these perpetrators of the crime of not wearing a pin or button return to being upstanding citizens of Anchorage by buying one and wearing it all all Rondy Events. The pins selling starts around Thanksgiving on weekends at various stores in town. Sell pins at the Rondy

Melodrama. Individual Kops usually has a stash of pins to make it easier on the good citizens of our community. A Keystone Kop pin is created each to sell as well.

This is the Kiwanis Club’s largest fundraiser. They receive a percentage of the pin and button sales for their efforts. All funds raised from the public are returned to the community through its many community service projects. The largest of these projects is the sponsorship of Key Clubs at each of the Anchorage and Eagle River High Schools. These clubs provide leadership and community services events in their school and area.

Over the past 50+ years the Kops have become recognized as the face of the Fur Rondy celebration and its ambassadors during the festival. They appear in the Kop outfits (resembling a British Bobbie) with pins all over their coats and hats. They “raid” television newscasts and arrest local newscasters who do have a Fur Rondy pin and appear at many public functions to advertise the event. Visitors take their pictures and ask for directions to the events. All this is done to promote Anchorage’s winter carnival.

The Kiwanis of Anchorage has openings for more Kops and members. Come join them in the fun of the Fur Rendezvous and the many other community projects they work on throughout the year.

For more information, or to learn how you can join the fun and become a Keystone Kop, email them at Kiwanisanchorage@gmail.com.

THE RONDY OPEN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SLED DOG RACE

Begun in 1946 as part of Fur Rondy, the Open World Championship Sled Dog Race has become a cornerstone event of the festival. Mushers from all over Alaska, the nation, and the world participate for the title of fastest sprint mushing team. The race is held over three days; the fastest total time recorded wins.

Countless people and entities support this race: the Municipality of Anchorage supplies police officers, snow fencing, and snow placement and removal for the street portion. The Alaskan Sled Dog & Racing Association, or ASDRA, grooms and sets snow fencing for the other 21 miles of trails.

The trail follows 4th Ave east to Cordova St, where mushers turn south. At the bottom of Cordova Hill, the trail moves to the bike/ski trails along Anchorage’s greenbelt. Here, the teams are challenged by long dark culverts under the Seward Highway and Lake Otis Parkway.

The trail has two large pedestrian overpasses at Northern Lights Blvd and Tudor Rd separated by a trail through a popular dog park. Six miles into the trail, the teams hit the designated sled dog trails of Tozier Track. Fourteen miles later, the trail again heads back across the Tudor Rd pedestrian overpass to downtown Anchorage.

Mushing
Be a part of history and celebrate the legacy of mushing in Anchorage! The Anchorage Mushing District, in conjunction with the Municipality of Anchorage and the Anchorage Downtown Partnership to designate the area of 4th Avenue from F Street to C Street as the Anchorage Mushing District in recognition of mushers from the Fur Rondy Open World Championship Sled Dog Races and the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. This designation will include interpretive signage, plaques commemorating mushers, and culminating in a steel truss arch crossing 4th Ave. For your support, you can receive a commemorative Mushing District Pin, a special Jon Van Zyle print or leave your mark on history with our special engraved bronze disk inlays! COLLECTOR PIN DESIGNERS

ABOUT RONDY PINS AND BUTTONS.

A tradition since the early days of Rondy, the Fur Rondy collector pins are an integral part of Rondy. Representing the spirit of the festival and celebration of the ten days of Rondy, these pins are worn across the globe. Artist compete to design the official pin and local students do the same in a booster button contest. These pins become collector’s items.

2023 RONDY COLLECTOR PIN DESIGNER

CRYSTAL EPPERLY

Crystal Epperly-May was born and raised in Austin, Texas. She married Scott Heckel (a Sourdough) in 2004. They have 3 wonderful children. Crystal and her family moved to Alaska in January 2006 and have called Alaska home ever since. She enjoys homeschooling her children, as it allows them opportunities to serve their community as part of their curriculum.

One of the community events dear to their hearts is the Annual Fur Rendezvous Festival, also known as the Rondy Festival.

Their favorite activity is participating in the Snow Sculpting Contest; of which they have successfully participated in for the last 8 years as a family team and are looking forward to many more. Another highly anticipated part of the Rondy Festival is the unveiling and collecting of the Official Rondy pin. She and her family begun collecting the pins years ago. This is the second time Epperly-May’s design has been chosen. She also designed the 2020 pin.

Crystal says that her inspiration for the design this year was her love for the great outdoors and the beauty our wonderful state has to offer. Crystal is affectionately known by family and friends as “momma bear” for her unwavering love and support she consistently shows them.

2023 BOOSTER BUTTON DESIGNER

VANESSA BARNES

I am very happy to win the 2023 Fur Rendezvous Booster Contest. I love to draw and sketch. This contest happened during school. I thought it was the perfect chance for me to show what I love most.

I really appreciate getting my design picked. I am a military child living in Alaska. I’ve spent my entire childhood, overseas, in Japan and Germany. I absolutely love the scenery and being able to see the wildlife roaming around in Alaska. Other than art, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. Thank you again for your recognition. It truly is an honor to have a design I’ve worked very hard on, and get picked for this year’s Fur Rendezvous.
