from the artistic director When I was in high school, everyone involved in theater dreamt of being considered a “triple threat”. A triple threat meant that you were an actor-singer-dancer and could act, sing, and dance equally well. Many could do one or two of those things well, but finding someone who could do all three was rare. Since moving to Philadelphia, I have been surrounded by triple threats of a different kind. The Philadelphia theater artist is a unique breed. We are fortunate to live in a community that supports and applauds not only innovative work, but innovative work-making, and therefore the artists who work here have the opportunity to explore different areas of the creation process. Philadelphia triple threats include actormusician-designers and writer-improviser-directors and dancer-choreographer-actors and music director-teacher-composers among others. I would love to say that Dave Jadico and Aaron Cromie are Philadelphia triple threats, but they are actually more like octuple threats. Dave is an actor-improviser-set designer-bass player-sax player-juggler-mime-fire eater and Aaron is an actor-director-puppet designer-puppeteer-guitar player-mandolin player-mask maker-costume designer. It is this astonishing collection of talents combined with their inimitable chemistry that made the idea of Dave & Aaron Go to Work so appealing. Working in these different areas gives each of them an inventive and quirky perspective and I am always surprised and delighted by what they come up with. I thank them for sharing this work and their exuberant comedy with 1812. I must also thank the Independence Foundation for their support of this work and all of our new work at 1812. This community would not be filled with artists such as these were it not for foundations like Independence who understand the importance of creating new work and supporting the unique process that each new work demands. Through the Independence Foundation New Works Initiative we have been able to help fund the development not only of Dave & Aaron Go To Work but of Let’s Pretend We’re Famous, This Is The Week That Is, and the upcoming It’s My Party: The Women and Comedy Project. In addition to what happens on stage we also have New Works Initiative pieces in development for future seasons in our rehearsal studio, including a new piece about Jackie Gleason — stay tuned! And finally, thank YOU for supporting new work our favorite way — by coming to see it. Enjoy Dave & Aaron Go To Work and have a laughter-filled holiday season.

Sharon Weiss (Honorary Producer): For 43 years, I have been Jeff’s straight man in our sitcom of life... Alice to his Ralph, Edith to his Archie, Weezy to his George, Claire to his Cliff. It hasn’t always been easy, but it’s never been dull. That being said, it is such a pleasure to be a part of the 1812 Productions family, where I can finally experience real comedy at its best. I’m looking forward to a long and wonderful relationship with this group. Love to Jeff, Jen, Scott, Rob, Ryan & Mac. Jeff Weiss (Honorary Producer): I last appeared on stage in 1955 at the age of seven. My elementary school was doing an original production called Happy New Year. I played the lead as “Father Time”. In the middle of my performance, I received a standing ovation. I later found out that people were standing so they could leave. Thanks to my family and friends for staying for most of the show. At that point, I decided I would be a better producer than an actor. Love to my wife Sharon, my children, and my grandchildren.

Jennifer Childs (Artistic Director): Jennifer Childs is the Co-Founder and Artistic Director for 1812 Productions. For 1812 she has created over a dozen original works of comedy including Our Show of Shows, Always a Lady, Cherry Bomb, Let’s Pretend We’re Married, This Is The Week That Is, and the upcoming It’s My Party: The Women and Comedy Project. Her solo show, Why I’m Scared of Dance by Jen Childs premiered here at 1812 and has since been performed at City Theatre in Pittsburgh; it will have a two-week run at Act II Playhouse in January 2013. Love to Scott and Lily.

Kate Tejada (Managing Director): This season Kate celebrates 10 years and the start of her eleventh season as Managing Director of 1812. She started her arts administration career at Arden Theatre Company and also worked for the Philadelphia Live Arts/Philly Fringe Festivals. She serves on the Board of Directors for 1812 and served on the Board of Directors for the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia for six years. She holds a BA from Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin. She would like to thank Jen and the entire staff of 1812 for their support and hard work — she is proud to call 1812 and Philadelphia her home, in all meanings of the word. Much love to Clayton & Alex.

From our lovely subscribers... Laughter is the light of the world, and the salt of the earth, and the bacon at the brunch of life. Comedy breaks people out of their solitude, and helps us laugh and bond like chimpanzees. That's probably why we began a few years back to subscribe to 1812 seasons as part of a group. First there were just a few of us, then a few more. Now, four times a year, seven friends go out to dinner and then take out an entire row of Plays & Players Theatre to marvel and enjoy the craft, talent, and hilarity of this company. Trying to organize our growing horde has been complicated at times, not just for us but for the subscription office. That's why we have had the chance to discover that the backstage, behind-the-scenes people of 1812 are as creative, cordial, and hilarious (in their own way) as the people on the stage. Philadelphia is an amazing theater town, and it's a special thrill to get to see great local actors from one venue, or one show, turn up in a different role and blow our minds in a completely new way. The 1812 regulars do this every single time, and they also bring new faces before us that make us eager to see them in their next show, or their next. It's hard to decide whether the company's solo shows—like Jen's Why I'm Scared Of Dance, or Scott in Mistakes Were Made, or Mary Martello's Happily Ever After—are the most stunning presentations; or whether it's the extraordinary way the company works with traditional material, like Our Show of Shows; or perhaps it's the phenomenal sparkle of the original and improvisational material, like the unmatchable, annual This Is The Week That Is. Whatever it is, our group eats it all up, and bubbles over talking about it afterward. Our lives are busier than they ought to be, and it can be hard to get together with everyone we'd like to see. Making the 1812 season—four shows a year, such a deal— a focus for this one group, has been a delightful way to enjoy some bonds and deepen other ones, and with luck we'll be keeping it up for years. Maybe we'll expand, and take over two rows next year. However it works out, I know 1812 Productions will be swell to us, as it always has. Marianne Lipson 1812 Subscriber
