Path Typology Path for easier to walk- Gravel Path Pros: Quicker and less expensive to install, can be used as a driveway surface, and long-lasting. Cons: Requires weeding, raking and occasional replenishment

Gravel path is a kind of hard and permeable path, which is great for those on a budget and can be used as a driveway surface. Here you can see in the photo, the gravel paths are normally adjoined with residential areas, also, the gravel paths tend to be wider than other types of path, that would mean the gravel path could be the main path and frequently used in the creek area. Therefore, gravel paving exists there is to make the path be easier to walk and provide a long-lasting function. Especially, the gravel path will not be dirty and sticky like soil path when it rain, and gravel paths are still walkable.

Path for access to water-Stone Path Pros: provide opportunities for peo to get interactions with the creek And I think the most interesting path is stone path. And stone path normally exist where engage with lower river level. That would be more safe for people to get access to the creek, like kids can play with water. Also, the stepping stone path can be used to cross the creek for shortcut, and I think their path is highly needed because there just is a bridge in the creek area. Then, it will be convenient for people go from the one side of the creek to the another side. And the stepping stone path normally exist at the sallow part of the creek, and the number of stones is enough for people to be easier to walk, then the stepping stone paths tend to be safe for pedestrians. Also, the stone path exists where the location near to cliff in the creek area, then the stone path can be a viewing point for people to enjoy the natural scenery of the cliff.

Path for protection-Mulch Path Pros: avoiding excessive evaporation of water in plants, reducing the number of irrigations, Protecting roots.

Mulch path is a kind of soft and permeable path. Here you can see in the photos, there are some saplings on the side of the path. Then, I think this is the reason why mulch path there. Because, the mulch can avoid excessive evaporation of water in plants from the dry climate in Australia, which could reduce the number of irrigation. Also, it can protect the roots of surrounding vegetation, which could allow the saplings to grow better.

Design Research Question: How to connect the landscape of Edgars creek and its stakeholders to generate an ongoing vibrant creek precinct honouring the existing conditions, also facilitating continuous involvement after covid-19 by designing mountain biking trails.?

Due to the previous 5km limit, there are more people coming into Edgars Creek area to do exercise and recreation activities. But, when the restriction left, this creek precinct would not be the first choice for people to get engage with, perhaps, it is because of the drawbacks of existing conditions, like water pollution. But actually, I think these definitions of good and bad are likely to be one-sided and superficial, because there is no such thing as a good or a bad thing. As I mentioned, the water pollution in Edagrs Creek could be bad quality, but, it could turn to be a good thing sometimes I suppose. As you can see in this picture, Edgars creek turned a fluorescent magenta pink, which is non-toxic. Actually, it is stunning scenery, isn`t it? Besides, because Edgars creek is engaging with amounts of remarkable views and elements, like significant geological features, also, revegetation actions bring more plants with shaping habitats for animals. Therefore, the creek precinct is potential to be a vibrant area. So, the ambition of my research question is to allow and attract people to continuously get involve with Edgars creek, also, provide opportunities to sense the natural environments, through enjoy existing conditions whatever good or bad qualities.

- Precinct? Why creek precinct, not creek landscape, because the landscapes or the open green spaces in the area of Edgars creek are just independent patches, and the path network will be corridors to create connections between the patches, channeling people flows through them. And all those elements can shape a vibrant precinct.

During COVID

dog walking

Speaking of phenomenology in edgars creek, pre-covid, there are very small percentage of walkers and dog walkers, during covid, cyclist and kids for play are new stakerholders, and post covid, the involvement would back to pre covid condition without the intervention of design. However, the involvement tends to be enhanced with my design implementation.

Methodology

"Placemaking is making a place meaning when people get interactions with environments, and it could be involvement of collaboration between community, stories and place. " —Hes, D., Mateo-Babiano, D., & Lee, G. (2019). Placemaking Fundamentals.

In the attempt to achieve the continues involvement, placemaking tends to be a good theory, because placemaking is the process that creates great public space bringing together diverse people to improve a community`s social and ecological situation, which could be helpful for shaping a vibrant edgars creek precinct.

Trail along Creek

If you’re a newbie mountain rider, don`t worries, there are also trails for lower skill levels. You can ride on the trail along creek and the forest mountain bikinhg trail to enjoy the environments and the views in edgars creek.

Well, regarding of mountain biking trails, the reason why I’m gonna do this is because there is a growing number of cyclists during covid as I mentioned before, and they basically are a kind of new stakeholders. Also, the location of Edgars creek precinct is in the urban area, then it would be very convenient for mountain biker to get engage. Therefore, mountain biker would become significant stakeholder after the pandemic continuously getting engage with this area.

Pedestrian Trail Perspectives

Speaking of the intervention of pedestrian path, I propose to introduce new path with mulch and sand surface cover at the area with intensive tree cover, which can allow people to get engage with urban forest walking enjoying natural environment of edgars creek, and enjoying the view or study the tree close. Also, people can get close to local animals, like rainbow lorikeets, because the existing eucalyptus trees are birdattracting for rainbow lorikeets. Besides, the sand surface cover trails could provide people a different walking feeling in the forest, also, it can create a linear space to kids for nature play.

Mulch Surface Trail

Speaking of pedestrian path. Actually, there are various existing path for pedestrian. So, I just added new surface cover to enhance users` experience, also, mitigate the conflicts between pedestrian and cyclist. Actually, it is difficult to detect and regulate how people use paths. Regarding of the urban forest walking trails, using timber bark and sand as surface cover could be a good choice to reduce cyclists` use, because they are two kind of soft materials, and it is not comfortable for cyclist to ride on that, which is easy to cause falling down from their bikes. This could reduce the possibility that cyclists ride on pedestrian path.
