Grandpa is a mini project form the Art & Creation course where we were asked to individually rewrite the story we created in groups without losing the main plot.

The premise of this project is to make a short movie of around 3mins in form of a shadow theater style. Everything needed to be done in a proper film production way, script writing, set design, character design, filming style and editing. 1 week was alocated for this work.

The reason behind this mini project comes from our main architectural project called Wild Micro Architecture. In this project we were asked as groups to write a story which will be the genesis of our architecture.

Grand-père est un mini-projet du cours Art et Création dans le cadre duquel il nous a été demandé de réécrire individuellement l’histoire que nous avons créée en groupe sans en perdre l’intrigue principale.

Le principe de ce projet est de réaliser un court-métrage d’environ 3 minutes sous la forme d’un théâtre d’ombres. Tout doit être fait dans les règles de l’art de la production cinématographique : écriture du scénario, conception du décor, conception des personnages, style de tournage et montage. 1 semaine a été allouée pour ce travail.

La raison de ce mini projet vient de notre projet architectural principal appelé Micro Architecture Sauvage. Dans ce projet, nous avons été demandé en groupe d’écrire une histoire qui sera la genèse de notre architecture.

A hidden place is a fantasy story created by Dean Purgas,

Ashish Luchmun, Anjaka Razafindrainibe Arivahy and Adiib

Hoossain-Saeb. It tales the story of Cesar Forest, his passion for the art, love for his grandfather and willingness to learn the truth. The tone is set in a steam punk era with flying aircrafts and experimental engineering.

La cachette est une histoire fantastique crée par Dean Purgas, Ashish Luchmun, Anjaka Razafindrainibe Arivahy et Adiib Hoossain-Saeb. Elle raconte l’histoire de Cesar Forest, sa passion pour l’art, son amour pour son grand-père et sa volonté d’apprendre la vérité. Le ton est donné dans une ère steampunk, avec des avions volants et une ingénierie expérimentale.

STORY

“Where are you taking me, Grandpa?”

T

he story of a young artist named Forest, César Forest. Everything starts with the strong relationship between his grandfather and him. Named Albert Forest, also a painter, heir from father to son of an immense forest which was his space of creation and expression.

The grandfather had a great affection for his grandson and shared with him his knowledge and his mastery by teaching him the art. The young Caesar lived his childhood among the great trees and developed a joy of living and found his pleasure in this forest.Time passed and the young man saw himself separated from the place where he lived and grew up next to the one whom he had a great esteem. César leaves the forest and especially leaves his model, his grandfather. Albert makes a gift to his grandson, which for him has an enormous value but César too young to understand took this notebook as a memory that he will learn to discover much later in his life. The gap widens and time passes. The years pass and life takes its course, César, now an adult, learns that the man who had shaped his childhood has left this world. Sadden by this tragic new, Cesar decides to take a break from university and visit the forest which was once in a past life his home. He searches his whole room to find the notebook of his grandfather and decides to take it with him on his journey back to the forest. After all this time, he rediscovers the contents of the notebook which awakens in him feelings of nostalgia. He starts flipping through it again and again and stops on a drawing of his grandfather among a group of people in his forest. They are all standing in front of vegetation that Caesar recognizes immediately. He sees a scribbled part in the background on one of them. As he brings his gaze closer, he notices an object that is abstract at this moment but that has a great similarity with the sketches on the previous pages of the notebook. Until now, he had not paid attention to the details of the contents of the notebook. These trees he recognized in the drawings reminded him of his childhood and he decides to find this mysterious place in the drawing. On the spot, he rediscovers the steps of his childhood that leads him to the domain. He sees this image that his memory brings up and recalls the stories that Albert told him. All this leads him to these trees that have changed since. These trees that inhabit emotions and a trail...the same one that is found in a page of his notebook. He pulls out this page, and says to himself: “a replica? Why do grandpa? “. At this precise moment, he does not suspect that these two same drawings are the key to a place that he does not know yet. By bringing the two elements together, César Forest, plays with the rotations, he plays with the angles by superimposing the sheet of the notebook and says

“Jesus Christ these two similar drawings form a single one when superimposed!!” This César is an adventurer, he goes there! He comes across a barrier of trees and asks himself: “What are you hiding, grandfather, tell me”. He moves forward in spite of this density and discovers an open space where the grasses have grown very tall. Cesar arrives face-to-face with a module, a machine that he can hardly distinguish. Invaded by plants, covered with dust, its appearance impresses him. He is seized with emotions.

This machine had become the habitat of birds, the shelter of invasive plants, and the refuge of dust. As he enters, some old paper rolls lie on the floor, he raises his head and sees a dashboard, a control panel that dazzles him.

In the room, he notices some strange patterns and design on the floor. The textures of it resemble a lot to those found on the notebook he was holding. The same forms, the same hollows, the same traces. He also notice a hole which was the same size as the notebook. He hurried to insert this notebook in the ground. The movement is hard but turns in the opposite direction of the clock involves the engagement of a gear. It is a trap door! Completely black, leaking into the ground, “what is this place?”

Breathe César. He takes the risk to go down with the help of a lamp allowing him to light the place. The fear gains him because he does not know what to expect. Facing the wall of this cave, a large painting appeared a very strange painting so large that he can hardly see its ending. Very puzzled by what he was seeing, he was looking around, try to find answers to these questions. As he approached the painting he saw a work table which was used for a long time judging by the amount of dust. On this table he found another journal, which appeared to belong to Albert. The story of a painting called the map of the world seen from above, the adventure that Albert Forest lived by flying over the countries of the world before the world war led him to hide his flying machine and forced him to keep this secret that only a ‘Forest’ can discover.

César went back for a very long trip but this time sitting in Albert Forest’s cave. “Take me away grandfather.”

RECIT

« Où m’emmène-tu grand-père? »

L

e récit d’un jeune artiste au nom de Foret, César Foret. Tout démarre par la forte relation entre son grand-père et lui. Prénommé Albert Foret, celui-ci, aussi artiste peintre et héritier de père en fils d’une immense forêt qui était son espace de création et d’expression.

Le grand-père avait une très grande affection pour son petit-fils et lui partagé son savoir et sa maitrise en lui apprenant le regard pour l’art et l’art du dessin lui-même.

Le jeune César vécue son enfance parmi ses grands arbres et développa une joie de vivre et trouva son plaisir dans cette forêt qui était comme la sienne aussi. Le temps passe et le jeune homme se vit séparé de l’endroit dans lequel il a vécu et grandit aux cotes d’une pour lequel il portait une grande estime. Le déménagement d’un univers à un autre qui restera ancré dans la mémoire de ce dernier. César quitte la forêt et surtout quitte son model, son grand-père. Albert fait cadeau à son petit-fils, qui pour lui a une énorme valeur mais César trop jeune pour comprendre prit ce carnet comme un souvenir qu’il apprendra à découvrir bien plus tard dans sa vie. L’écart se creuse et le temps passe. Les années passent et la vie suit son cours quand César, devenue adulte apprend que l’homme qui avait façonné son enfance a quitté ce monde. Il replonge constamment dans des souvenirs avec son grand-père qu’il n’a jamais effacé de sa vie. La seule chose qu’emporte César est un carnet de croquis de son grand-père qui vit au fond de sa mémoire. Il retrouve ce carnet enfuit quelque part et décide de l’emporter avec lui lors de son voyage retour à la forêt. Après tout ce temps, il redécouvre le contenue du carnet qui éveille en lui des sentiments de nostalgie. Il recommence à le feuilleter sans arrêt et s’arrête sur un dessin de son grand-père parmi un groupe de gens dans sa forêt. Ils sont tous debout devant une végétation que César reconnait toute suite.

Il aperçoit une partie gribouillée en arrière-plan de ces derniers. En rapprochant son regard, il remarque comme un objet abstrait à cet instant mais qui a une grande similitude avec les croquis des pages précédentes du carnet. Jusqu’à présent, il n’avait pas fait attention aux détails du contenue du carnet. Ces arbres reconnus sur le dessin lui rappellent ses passages dans la forêt qu’il a envie de retrouver une fois arrivé. Sur place, il refait les pas de son enfance qui l’entraine, qui l’emmène, c’est son domaine. Il aperçoit cette image que sa mémoire fait surgir et rappel ses histoires que lui racontait son exemplaire. Tout cela lui conduit vers ces arbres qui ont changés depuis. Ces arbres qui habitent des émotions et qui enfuit un tracé…le même qui se retrouve dans une page de son carnet. Il sort cette page, et se dit : « une réplique ? pourquoi faire grand-père ? ». A ce moment précis, il ne se doute pas que ces deux cartes sont la clé

d’un endroit qu’il ignore encore. En rapprochant les deux éléments, César Foret, s’amuse avec les rotations, il joue avec les angles en superposant la feuille du carnet et dit « Marie Antoinette ! une intersection ! Il est preneur ce César, il y va ! Il tombe sur une barrière d’arbres et se demande : « que cache tu grand-père, dis-le-moi ». Il avance malgré et passe parmi cette densité et découvre un espace dégagé où les herbes se sont créés une place importante par leur hauteur. César arrive nez-à-nez à un module, une machine qu’il arrive difficilement à distinguer. Envahis de plantes, recouverte de poussière, son allure l’impressionne. Il est saisi d’émotions.

L’accomplissement des dessins du carnet se placé en face de lui. Cette machine était devenue l’habitat des oiseaux, l’abris de plantes envahissantes, le refuge de poussières. César en pleure presque, émue devant une machine qu’il a envie de découvrir. En entrant, des vieux rouleaux traine au sol, il relève la tête et vois un tableau de bord, un poste de commande qui l’éblouie. Sur ce même sol, il remarque cette emprunte qui lui confirme la présence de son grand-père, c’est le dessin se trouvant sur la couverture du carnet. Les mêmes formes, les mêmes creux, les mêmes arrêts, les mêmes traces. Il se hâte d’insérer ce carnet dans le sol. Le mouvement est dure mais des tours dans le sens inverse de la montre entraine l’enclanchement d’un engrenage. C’est une trappe ! Complètement noire, enfuit dans le sol, « qu’estce que cet endroit ? » souffle César. Il prend le risque de descendre par l’échelle, dans cette trappe à l’aide d’une lampe lui permettant d’éclairer le lieu. La peur lui gagne car il ne sait pas à quoi s’attendre. Il appréhende.

Face au mur, une grande toile de peinture, une œuvre de grande envergure au bout du nez. Un journal posé sur un table en bois brute recouverte de poussière. L’histoire d’un tableau appelé la carte du monde vue d’en haut, l’aventure qu’a vécu Albert Foret en survolant les pays du monde avant que la guerre mondiale l’entrainât à dissimuler sa machine volante et lui força à garder ce secret que seul un ‘Foret’ peut découvrir. César est repartie pour un très long voyage mais cette fois assis depuis la cave d’Albert Foret. « Emmène-moi grandpère »

Grandpa is a rewritten version of A hidden place where slight

changes were made in the storyline without losing its original essence. The changes were made in order to facilitate the

production and comprehension of a shadow theater movie.

Since it was done during the pandemic where materials were very hard to get, this situation was also taken into consideration while scripting.

Grand-père est une version réécrite de La Cachette dans laquelle de légers changements ont été apportés au scénario sans perdre l’intrigue. Ces changements ont été effectués afin de faciliter la production et la compréhension d’un film de théâtre d’ombres.

Comme le film a été réalisé pendant la pandémie où les matériaux étaient très difficiles à obtenir, cette situation a également été prise en compte lors de l’écriture du scénario.

This is the story of Cesar Forest.

Cesar grandson of Albert Forest, also a painter worked in an immense forest which was his space of creation and expression, he shared with Cesar his knowledge and masteryof art but more than that incredible stories about fly machines and walking cites that would come only from the mind of a madman.

Scene 1

Scene 1 brief: Young Cesar (5yr) and his grandfather father Albert have a close relationship.

Setting: Albert’s house (Cesar, his parents and Albert living), Albert’s studio Action: Albert teaching Cesar how to draw, the appreciation of art, loving life as it is.

Dialogues:

Albert(looking at Cesar) - My child art is not just about drawing; it’s about how you can express your creativity to the fullest. But above all never be afriad to do what others consider crazy

Scene 2

Scene 2 brief: Cesar (10yr) saw himself separated from his grandpa. He receives one last gift from him which is his personal notebook.

Setting: Outside, in front of Albert’s house.

Action: Albert giving Cesar the notebook, Sebastian crying away as he getting into the car, Cesar and his parent driving away

Dialogues: Cesar: (crying) - What grandpa nooo, am not leaving.

Albert: (sad) - Am sorry my child, take my notebook, its yours now.

Something great resides in it.

Scene 3

Scene 3 brief: Years pass by, Sebastian is now an adult, and he gets the news

about his grandfather’s death. Cesar decides to revive the memories of him and his grandfather by visiting the forest where Albert use to bring him.

Setting : In the bus driving toward the forest.

Action: Cesar is sitting in the middle of the bus nears the window. He is looking through Albert’s notebook, reimagining the good memories while occasionally looking at the view through the bus dirty window.

Narration (soft voice) The years have passed and Cesar, now an adult, learns that the man who had shaped his childhood has left this world. Sadden by his tragic news the young man decide to take a break and take a trip to his grandfather’s forest.

On his way, Cesar dove into the notebook, rediscovering he drawing of his talented grandfather. Cesar came across one intriguing drawing of a bizzare machine which he realise by the background is the forest to which he is heading - Transition to next scene -

Scene 4

Scene 4 brief: Cesar curious to know where this bizarre machine is. He arrives on spot where the men were standing. No machine is to seen. Get back to the notebook, finds a plan of the forest a secret location.

Setting : The forest. (Not a dense forest)

Action: Cesar arrives on spot where the men were standing.

He goes through the

notebook, find a plan with a secret location. Run to this location

Dialogues: Cesar: (confused) -But where is the machine. There has to be something more.

Scene 5

Scene 5 brief: Cesar arrives at the location indicated on the map. Difficult to

go through as it is a very dense part of the forest. He is able to get through.

In front of him he sees the bizarre structure, standing tall and colonized by nature. Now more curious than ever his goes inside.

Setting: The forest. (Dense forest), Machine covered with vegetation.

Action: Cesar trying to pass through the dense forest. He arrives in front of the 6m tall structure. Inspect the surrounding with great interest. He finds a way to get inside the machine.

Dialogues: Narration (soft voice) Fueled by his curiosity, Cesar continued Cesar: (confused, intrigued, astonished) - THE MACHINE!!!

Scene 6

Scene 6 brief: Cesar investigates the machine and after sometimes he found a trap door on the floor of the machine. He enters the gloomy tunnel and found himself inside a gigantic cave.

Setting: Inside the machine, into the gloomy tunnel

Action: Cesar looks everywhere, trying to understand what is happening.

Narration At this point thousands of questions are popping inside his head. What is this place? Why was it hidden? But above all how was his grandfather involved in all of this?

Scene 7

Scene 7 brief:When he looks at the wall of the cave he sees the biggest

treasure he could ever imagine. Thousands of painting of many different places

around the world all painted by his grandfather. A gift his grandfather gave to him the day they got separated.

Setting: Inside the cave, thousands of drawing on the walls

Action: he walks around contemplating all the drawing. He found a journal

accompanied with a letter on a working table. It’s the journal of Albert. He starts to read.

Narration: (emotional) Heyy kido, I believe if you are reading this letter that I am not in this world anymore. I know that you have a lot of questions and you are very confused. I understand.

You were very young when we got separated and there were so many things that I wanted to tell you but life had decided something else. I taught everything I know and tale all the stories I know, but there is one story I never told you about, my greatest of all.

The notebook I gave 13 years ago is just the beginning of the story. On this table sits my personal dairy, get ready Champ because this is the story of my life.
