‘I’m actually heavier than I was three years ago, but I accept my body as it is today. I work out not to lose weight but to maintain my good health.’ —ASHLEY GRAHAM, on body shaming comments she received after posting a photo of herself looking slimmer, on Lenny Letter

How do you balance shooting the show in Vancouver and having a family in L.A.? If I have a long weekend, my wife [photographer and former actress Cynthia Daniel, 40] and kids [Ryland, 12, Colt, 8, and Steely Rose, 3] will fly up, and we’ll get out in nature together here. “It was amazing to watch Michael Phelps make history in his final Olympics as Team U.S.A.’s flag bearer and to light the way for our athletes and our country on a global stage,” executive vice president David Lauren tells People.

E IRST-TIM N THE FH IO C AMP Ryan Held, 21, stole social media’s heart on Aug. 7 after he and U.S.A. swimming teammates Nathan Adrian, Caeleb Dressel and Michael Phelps took gold in the 4x100meter relay, and he wept tears of joy on the podium. “I’ve heard the national anthem hundreds of times,” the Springfield, Ill., native said. “But as soon as that played . . . the tears just started rolling down my face.”

R T-RUNNE THE FRON U.S.A. gymnastics favorite Simone Biles, 19, nabbed the No. 1 ranking on Aug. 7, qualifying to compete in both the women’s team and individual all-around competitions. The Texan—who was homeschooled after her grandparents adopted her at age 3—told reporters the feat “feels great!”

ORD THE RECR BREAKE After earning silver with Team U.S.A.’s women’s 4x100-meter freestyle relay crew on Aug. 6, Katie Ledecky took home the gold the next day in the 400-meter freestyle—and she broke the world record too. “I was pumped,” she said after her big win. E THE 7-TIMN OLYMPIA Oksana Chusovitina broke a record before she even set foot in the gym in Rio on Aug. 7: The Uzbekistan native is attending her seventh Olympic Games, and at 41 is the oldest athlete to ever compete in women’s gymnastics. While most Olympic gymnasts retire by their early 20s, Chusovitina has defied the odds—and has even competed against a woman the same age as her son Alisher, 17. “It’s a pity there are no points for age,” she joked ahead of the Games.

RNIGHT THE OVEBOL SEX SYM “Don’t blink or you’ll miss it,” Tongan tae kwon do athlete Pita Taufatofua wrote online, before attending the opening ceremony slathered in coconut oil and flaunting traditional garb from his South Pacific home. The 32-year-old—who has modeled in Australia—will compete on Aug. 20.

IKE LOOKAL O E L E H T Team U.S.A. archery veteran Brady Ellison—who won silver in the men’s team event and will compete for individual honors—quickly drew comparisons to Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio, thanks to his gruff good looks. The three-time Olympian, 27, got his first bow at age 7 and now lives in Chula Vista, Calif.

NBC’s Ryan Seacrest is in Rio for his show Olympic Late Night—and seems to be settling in to Copacabana Beach pretty nicely! “It’s been a lot of fun,” he tells People. So we see!

“Saude! ” says Seacrest, using the Portuguese for “cheers,” as he toasts with models Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima.

“Fun fact: I had to wake up at 6 a.m. to take this photo,” Seacrest says. “Usually crowds of hundreds here.”

RYAN’S 5 CAN’T-MISS EVENTS Seacrest says it would be a shame to miss these events: 1. Beach Volleyball “The matchups are good, and it’s on the beaches in Brazil! What can be better?” 2. Michael Phelps “Can he win? We always ask that, and the answer is always yes.” 3. Gymnastics “Our team is so good this year! It’s one of the biggest draws at the Olympics for a reason.” 4. Table Tennis “It’s fascinating to watch. They’re hitting the ball at lightning speed!” 5 . Closing Ceremonies “Culture, music and dance, all wrapped up in one!”

DSON EN GRAN D L O G E TH Adam Peaty, 21, set the world record for the men’s 100-meter breaststroke when he won Great Britain’s first gold medal of the Games on Aug. 7—but his victory went viral with a little help from his grandmother Mavis Williams. S “It made everybody laugh,” Young says of this wild Gucci creation.

Margot is going so bold on the red carpet! How are you approaching her style? In Suicide Squad her character Harley Quinn is crazy. So it’s really about not being as serious and classy as usual. She’s definitely someone who’s open to taking risks. And I think having [trendsetting supermodel] Cara Delevingne on the tour ups the fashion ante. Everything she’s wearing has a playful vibe . . . We do have a bit of a critter theme. I don’t want to put my clients in some kind of costume, or make them step into yet another role, but a dress with a screaming tiger on the front is very Margot, and so is a glitter unicorn. She is really fun! She’s gorgeous, but these aren’t typical “bombshell” dresses. Why not? When I work with really beautiful women like Margot, I don’t like to put them in classically sexy “attractive girl” clothing, because it can look cheesy. Something has to be interesting or edgy or even plain, because she is so crazy-pretty.

JOHNNY DEPP & AMBER HEARD

INSIDE THEIR DIVORCE BATTLE

AFTER A SUMMER OF SHOCKING ALLEGATIONS

and continuous legal squabbles, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s bitter divorce is now becoming notable for what isn’t happening. In the latest development, the actress, 30, arrived at the office of Depp’s attorney Laura Wasser in L.A. on Aug. 6 for a scheduled deposition in her ongoing restrainingorder case against the actor—but was never

questioned. Depp’s legal team had lobbied hard in court to schedule the deposition, in which they would be able to grill Heard about the marriage and her domestic-abuse claims. “Amber was ready, willing and able to go forward with her deposition,” says a Heard source. “She waited for 10 hours, and at no time did Amber ever refuse to start the deposition.” PEOPLE August 22, 2016

23

Scoop

Depp hopped on a yacht in Ibiza on Aug. 6, the day Heard arrived for her deposition in L.A. (she’s repped by attorney Samantha Spector). “She looked very thin and a bit tired,” says a source. Heard and Depp were at the Venice Film Festival in 2015 (right).

“Spending time with his kids is his focus,” says a source close to the actor’s circle. “He feels stressed about all the Amber drama. He never anticipated getting a divorce. It’s a very sad situation for him.” Sources close to Depp and Heard insist they would like nothing better than a resolution. “Johnny would

like to see this divorce finalized as soon as possible,” says another Depp source. “He’s concerned with the financial settlement and how she will react going forward.” The Heard source says the actress wants to move on too: “Amber and her attorneys are ready to proceed.” —Reporting by Pernilla Cedenheim, Jodi Guglielmi, Lindsay Kimble, Linda Marx and Mike Miller

AMBER’S BILLIONAIRE BUDDY Heard has spent time recently with a guy who makes Depp look like a pauper: Tesla CEO Elon Musk, 45, who’s worth $12.5 billion and is himself going through a divorce. Spotted at a Miami hotel in July and then at a London nightclub just before Heard flew to L.A. for her deposition, the pair sparked romance rumors, though a Musk source says they’re “just friends” who have known each other for a few years. A Miami source who knows Musk says they didn’t appear romantic: “I would not rule out the possibility, but both have their hands full right now.”

24

The actress and Musk (in London on Aug. 2) arrived at London’s the Box nightclub together, according to a source.

So what happened? The source declined to comment further, but both sides reportedly were discussing a settlement. With a court date coming up Aug. 15, this “is probably the best time to try to settle the case,” says L.A. family-law specialist Steve Mindel, who’s not involved with the divorce. “Either right before her deposition, because she doesn’t want to be deposed and potentially expose inconsistencies in her story, or right after, because the person who’s writing the big checks is going to be deposed next, and he doesn’t want to be deposed for a whole bunch of reasons.” (In court papers, Wasser has argued that Heard is “attempting to secure a premature financial resolution by alleging abuse.”) Since her May 23 divorce filing, Heard has been working on the movie Justice League in London and relying on her sister and a group of girlfriends for support. She has also been spotted with Tesla mogul Elon Musk (see box). Depp, meanwhile, spent the Aug. 6 weekend in Ibiza, Spain, where he was spotted on a yacht, sporting a new haircut and mustache. Since wrapping a tour with his band, the Hollywood Vampires, Depp has been living in L.A. and hanging with his kids, daughter Lily-Rose, 17, and son Jack, 14, from his previous relationship with Vanessa Paradis.

All hail Mimi! When Mariah Carey’s new docuseries debuts in December, her loyal lambs are in for a multifaceted treat. “There are so many different versions of Mariah,” Carey, 46, said Aug. 3 at a TCA panel promoting the E! show. “Which is the real one? I don’t know!” One thing’s certain: Her billionaire fiancé, James Packer, 48, will get screen time. “He’s been cool with allowing some moments [on tape],” says the singer. And her 5-yearold twins (with ex Nick Cannon), Moroccan and Monroe, are already poised to steal the show. “They should have their own show,” Carey says. “That’s how funny they are.”

“It’s a whole new world, juggling four!” says actress Liv Tyler, 39, who welcomed daughter Lula Rose on July 8 and is also mom to Sailor, 18 months, and Milo, 11, and stepmom to fiancé David Gardner’s son Gray, 9. “This is definitely one where everyone is chipping in.” Not like the supermom ever gets much of a break: While pregnant, she filmed her show The Leftovers, plus collaborated on a 12-piece collection for British heritage brand Belstaff. “It was superexciting,” she says of designing the “classic” looks. Still, her full schedule has no room for stress. “I’m completely blissed out,” Tyler says. “Sitting with all the children and David, I literally keep pinching myself, going, ‘Am I dreaming? And I wanted to be as well informed as I possibly could be. You just finished filming the final two 50 Shades movies. What will you miss the most—and least—about them? I’ll miss my friends the most. The people are like family to me, and suddenly I won’t be seeing them as much, and that’s kind of sad. But I won’t miss wearing suits, which I had to do. I don’t feel comfortable in them. What do you do in your downtime? When I get home from set, I usually have a drink! I’m normally so exhausted that a drink is very much needed at the end of the day. And I’m a big golfer. A lot of people don’t think it’s cool or whatever, but I’ve grown up playing it. I’ve spent a large portion of my life defending golf!

JOEL KINNAMAN THE SWEDISH KILLING AND HOUSE OF CARDS ACTOR, 36, IS CURRENTLY STARRING IN SUICIDE SQUAD AS RICK FLAG

His Suicide Squad training was so intense, he may never be the same again. “We teamed up with these military guys that were the real deal, and we did immersion training where we couldn’t sleep for 60 hours straight. It puts you in a very odd state of mind. We also watched videos of the most awful things I’d ever seen. I’ll never be able to forget them. I was like, ‘But I’m just an actor!’ ”

If he doesn’t work out, he gets ‘skinny-fat.’

Joe Mazzello While plenty of kids celebrate their 9th birthdays with dinosaur themes, Joe Mazzello did it while starring in 1993’s Jurassic Park—and being chased by a giant raptor. “It was this huge machine on wheels,” Mazzello, 32, says of the dinosaur. “They lost control of it, and I was knocked down. The crew sang ‘Happy Birthday’ while I was on the ground!”

3 CONFESSIONS

Mazzello, who also appeared in HBO’s WWII series The Pacific, recently made his directorial debut with the ensemble dramedy Undrafted (available for download now) and says his childhood spent on sets with directors like Spielberg was better than film school. “I’ve taken ideas from everyone!” he says. —KARA WARNER

“I gained 35 lbs. for the role! But I had to bulk up for it. I’m usually a skinny guy. Though now, if I don’t keep up with training, I’m skinny-fat—skinny with a belly.”

Working with Will Smith was incredibly humbling. “When the biggest star of the movie is the most humble and kind-spirited man ever, the last thing you can be is a diva— or else it’s going to be really obvious that you’re a piece of garbage with your demands!” —GILLIAN TELLING

Was it fun or a chore to write your latest book, Kathy Griffin’s Celebrity Run-Ins (out Nov. 22)? A lot of fun. I mean, I think this book is so good, I’m never going to work again. It’s full of soundbites [about celebs]. I’ve been in the game a long time, so I’m talking about everybody. What the hell, why not? Life is short! You live next door to Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. How’s that been? They’re actually dreamy because the last thing they want is trouble with their neighbors. They’re very busy with Taylor Swift and their lip kits and what have you. How did you get your ‘bangin’ bikini bod?’ It’s so simple—I work out every day. I go on a hike, do ’80s arm circles at the same time and then 50 sit-ups. That’s it! —GEORGE STARK

With a song in her heart (where it should have stayed): Meryl Streep as the world’s worst singer.

1

Meryl Streep carries the day as a woman who couldn’t carry a tune COMEDY There was a time—before American Idol’s William Hung, before YouTube’s Miranda Sings—when people didn’t pride themselves on butchering melody. The real-life Florence Foster Jenkins (1868-1944), a Manhattan society matron and avid amateur singer, reduced arias to a jagged rubble of flat notes and shrieks. But she was philanthropic, which purchased the indulgence of the cultural elite, and her companion (played by an excellent Hugh Grant) spared no effort in making sure her recitals were sung before a rapturous audience—a musical Potemkin village. The role offers Streep a rare showcase for physical comedy: When Florence sings, the notes seem to be fighting their way into her chest rather than out. But then the vanity of this not unkind but very silly woman is punctured. At that point Streep gives us a heartbreaking swan song. (Aug. 12, PG-13)

It’s not easy being green, furry and enormous FAMILY A thorough reboot of the 1977 Disney musical, this gentle, simply told fantasy has some of the imaginative charm (and pervasive, unresolvable sadness) of Where the Wild Things Are and The BFG. An orphan boy, Pete (Oakes Fegley), grows up in the forest with a giant dragon named Elliot as protector, friend and green-furred pet. Discovered when loggers and bulldozers invade the woods, Pete is forced to rejoin society. The shy Elliot (who can turn invisible) frets, sighs and finally takes action. Looking like an enormous sheepdog crossbred with Shrek, he’s possibly the summer’s loveliest CGI creation. (Aug. 12, PG)

WHO KILLED JONBENET RAMSEY?

Nearly 2 decades after the 6-year-old was found dead in her Colorado home, the case continues to haunt her family and the nation. Inside the ongoing investigation of her horrific death— andthesearch for her killer

S

Life Cut Short Fond of dancing and singing, JonBenét (left) had a “natural ebullience,” a neighbor told People after the 6-year-old was murdered at her home (right).

Several minutes m before 6 a.m. on Dec. 26, 1996, as the night holi holiday crew staffing Boulder, Colo.’s emergency communications communic mmuni center was changing shifts, a dispatcher pushed shed the th blinking light of a call button to hear the franticc voice of Patsy Ramsey: “We have a kidnapping. Hurry, please. Th There’s a note left and our daughter’s gone. She’s 6 years old. old She’s blonde. She’s 6 years old.” o It was w a 911 call that launched one of the nation’s most bizarre and enduring murder mysteries. Six-year-old JonBenét’s beaten and strangled body was found later that day in the basement of the family’s 6,800-sq.-ft. Tudor brick mansion, duct tape covering her mouth, a garrote tied tightly around her neck. Since then, there have been more than 140 suspects investigated (including JonBenét’s parents, Patsy and John Ramsey), more than 1,400 pieces of evidence reviewed, more than 50,000 pages of investigation documents generated, and still the case remains unsolved. With a new CBS series focusing on the case launching in the fall, as well as her long-silent brother Burke, now 29, finally opening up to Dr. Phil in an interviewairing Sept. 12,fascinationwiththe case continues to build. As the 20th anniversary of JonBenét’s death nears, People examines the evidence, suspects—and enduring questions in this case, still an open investigation. “Our goal,” says Boulder police department spokesperson Shannon Cordingly, “continues to be an arrest.” PEOPLE August 22, 2016

Picture Perfect Patsy (with JonBenét, John and Burke in 1993) loved dressing her daughter up for beauty pageants (right, in 1996).

Did someone in the Ramsey family write the ransom note?

Was there really an intruder? A broken basement window, an unidentified footprint in the room where JonBenét’s body was found and trace male DNA evidence that couldn’t be linked to anyone in the family led investigator Lou Smit to surmise there had been an intruder in the Ramsey home. But Smit, who had been called out of retirement by the Boulder district attorney’s office three months after the murder due to his extensive 30-year experience investigating homicides, found himself at odds with the Boulder police, who pointed to dust and an undisturbed spi-

der web around the window as evidence that no one had broken in. The intruder theory “doesn’t make sense on the basis of the physical evidence,” says Steven E. Pitt, a forensic psychiatrist hired by Boulder authorities. “It just doesn’t add up.” Eighteen months after joining the investigation, a frustrated Smit resigned, still insistent there was “credible evidence of an intruder and a lack of evidence the parents are involved.” Until his death from colon cancer in 2010, he carried a photo of JonBenét in his wallet, a haunting reminder of the case he couldn’t solve.

DEC. 26, 1996 Six-year-old JonBenét is found dead in the basement of the family’s Boulder home; she has been bludgeoned and strangled.

JAN. 1, 1997 The Ramseys appear on CNN, announcing that they did not kill their daughter, and offer a $50,000 reward for information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of her killer.

Written on a pad found inside the Ramseys’ home with a black Sharpie that also belonged to the family, the ransom note was “the biggest oddity in the whole case,” says Scott Robinson, a defense attorney and media pundit who has studied the investigation. John Douglas, a former head of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit hired by the Ramseys to examine the case, theorized the note was written before the murder by an inexperienced, young perpetrator who borrowed lines from the movies Ransom (“she dies”) and Speed (“Don’t try to grow a brain”). But police found that fingerprints on the note came from authorities who handled the document—and Patsy

APRIL 30, 1997 The Ramseys have their first formal interview with the Boulder police department. JUNE 1998 to OCTOBER 1999 The Ramseys undergo further questioning by police. Burke Ramsey (above, with JonBenét in 1996) is interviewed for six hours. Three months later the D.A. convenes a grand jury to hear the case, but ultimately he declines to file charges, citing insufficient evidence.

she regretted that the finding came after Patsy’s death from ovarian cancer in 2006. “I wish we could have done so before Mrs. Ramsey died. We intend in the future to treat you as victims of the crime, with the sympathy due you because of the horrific loss you suffered.” But in his book Foreign Faction, the former lead investigator for the D.A.’s office A. James Kolar said there were additional traces of male DNA found on the cord and the paintbrush that Lacy didn’t mention. In fact, he said, there were six separate DNA samples belonging to unknown individuals that were found by the test. “Trace amounts of DNA can get on places and clothing from all different, non-suspicious means, just as anybody who handles the cloth-

Were Patsy and John cleared as suspects? Trace DNA samples of genetic material came from JonBenét’s fingernails, the crotch of her underwear, the waistband of her leggings, the wrist bindings and the garrote—made by the killer from a length of cord and the handle of one of Patsy’s paintbrushes broken in half. On July 9, 2008, then Boulder District Attorney Mary Lacy announced that the investigative teams had utilized a new methodology called “touch DNA,” where forensic scientists “scrape” a surface that has no observable indication of DNA in order to recover unseen genetic material. Lacy revealed they had tested the leggings JonBenét had

MAY 2000 The Ramseys announce they have passed lie-detector tests given by a private agency, not by the FBI as requested by the Boulder police.

DECEMBER 2003 A DNA sample from JonBenét’s underwear is submitted to the FBI database CODIS. No match is found.

Under Suspicion “The killer took away my will to live,” John (with Patsy, speaking to media in 1997) said in 2012 .

JULY 9, 2008 Boulder D.A. Lacy announces that new “touch DNA” tests on particles found on JonBenét’s body have convinced her that the Ramseys were not involved in the death of their little girl.

OCTOBER 2013 The Boulder Daily Camera files suit to force the D.A. to release the official record of the 1998 grand jury. Released on Oct. 25, the documents reveal that the majority of grand jurors voted to indict both John and Patsy on charges of child abuse resulting in death and accessory to a crime.

AUG. 16, 2006 A schoolteacher living in Thailand named John Mark Karr (mug shot, above) confesses to and is arrested for JonBenét’s murder and is flown back to the U.S. Boulder D.A. How was JonBenét’s brother Burke involved in the investigation?

A NEW LIFE

John Ramsey, 72 (with wife Jan, 58, in 2012), owns a promotional marketing company and splits time between homes in Charlevoix, Mich., and Las Vegas. In 2012 he wrote The Other Side of Suffering, about losing JonBenét, Patsy and his daughter Beth from his first marriage, who died in a car accident in 1992.

46

August 22, 2016 PEOPLE

A Closer Look Experts noted some similarities between Patsy’s handwriting style and the ransom note but not enough to say she’d written it. Still, defense attorney Scott Robinson says, “only a very few people knew John Ramsey had gotten a $118,000 bonus.”

Outside of the family, who have been the main suspects in the case? The mother of one of JonBenét’s friends recalled JonBenét being excited about “a secret visit Santa had promised to make to her after Christmas day,” wrote Kolar in Foreign Faction. That led some in the D.A.’s office to believe a visit had been prearranged by Bill McReynolds, a man who sometimes worked as Santa Claus in the area and had been at JonBenét’s house two days before she died. “We don’t know this guy . . . but there was plenty of circumstantial information to make you think,” John Ramsey told People in 2012. Though unsettling coincidences—McReynolds’s daughter had been abducted 22 years before Jon-

FINALLY SPEAKING OUT

Burke Ramsey, 29 (with Dr. Phil for an interview set to air Sept. 12), graduated from Purdue University in 2010 with a degree in computer and information technology. He is a software developer in Indianapolis. “Burke is cut from the same cloth as his dad,” his stepmom, Jan, told People in 2012. “He’s quiet and not super-demonstrative.”

Just 9 years old when his sister was slain, Burke was asleep on the second floor of the Ramsey home through the whole ordeal, his parents insisted. Police questioned Burke the day JonBenét was found, and in January of 1997, he was interviewed by a child psychologist. A year later, in an interview monitored by the Ramseys’ attorney and a staffer from the D.A.’s office, Burke also talked to a Broomfield police officer. In 2010 police again approached Burke, giving him a card with a number to call if he wanted to discuss the case—he never used it. While multiple websites and online

forums have long debated Burke’s involvement in his sister’s death, he has never publicly talked about the case and he has never been named a suspect.

Benét’s death and his wife wrote a play about a child molested in her basement and then murdered—were explored, DNA tests cleared McReynolds before his death in 2002. Volunteer investigators who have been helping the Ramsey family try to solve the mystery of JonBenét’s murder have also kept the name of Michael Helgoth in the news as a suspect. Helgoth, a 26-year-old who reportedly worked in a salvage yard and committed suicide in 1997, allegedly wore Hi-Tec boots similar to those of a print found in the Ramsey basement. A source with knowledge of the investigation tells People that the Boulder police department “thoroughly investigated” Helgoth and found no evidence to suggest he was involved.

JonBenét’s name was the “one heard all the time,” at the Ramsey home, a neighbor told People after her death. Another neighbor said JonBenét was “joy and happiness.”

Did JonBenét’s participation in beauty pageants lead to her death? Former Police Chief Beckner acknowledged the possibility that JonBenét might have known the killer from a pageant but said,“We found no evidence to support this.” John Ramsey toldPeople in 2012 that he wasn’t unhappy with the pageants. “It was something Patsy and JonBenét did together. I don’t think it had anything to do with her death.”

How did JonBenét really die? Beckner said in 2015 the little girl was hit in the head with a “very hard, unknown object, possibly a flashlight,” and “the blow knocked her into deep unconsciousness.” He further described that the strangulation came 45 minutes to two hours aftertheheadstrike, basedontheswelling on the brain. While the head wound would have eventually killed her, the cause of death was listed as strangulation. “The rest of the scene we believe was staged,” he said, “including the vaginal trauma, to make it look like a kidnapping/assault gone bad.” Although some experts told police there was evidence of prior sexual abuse, “there was no way to really know if it was chronic,” said Beckner. Linda Thompson was just 22 when she fell in love with the King of Rock and Roll in 1972. Newly crowned Miss Tennessee Universe, she was invited to a screening at a Memphis theater hosted by the man himself. Elvis, 37, was smitten, and Thompson, who was still a virgin, found herself swept up in an intense romance that would change her life forever. She spent almost five years with Elvis, who was battling a worsening addiction to prescription pills, before leaving him eight months prior to his death. Next up in her astonishing life: falling for and marrying Olympic gold medal decathlete Caitlyn Jenner, then known as Bruce. The couple, who wed in 1981, had two sons, Brandon and Brody, but the marriage fell apart in the mid 1980s after Thompson learned Jenner yearned to live life as a woman. FordecadesThompsonguardedthesecret while living a very public life of her own. A regular on TV’s Hee Haw from 1977 to 1992, she married composer and producer David Foster in 1991 and became an award-winning lyricist, collaborating with Foster on the Whitney Houston hit “I Have Nothing.” Now 66 and single, Thompson looks back on those extraordinary experiences—and the remarkable partners she shared them with—in a new memoir, A Little Thing Called Life, excerpted exclusively here. Eager for her kids and grandkids to know her history, she also hopes to share an uplifting lesson: “I want people to know we are all in this together and we are all fallible. We’re all so diverse and so complex, but most of all, we’re all human.”

‘For this moment in time, he was perfection. He was so magnificent’ —ON ELVIS

Under the best of circumstances, Elvis was needy. He’d been hurt immensely by his ex-wife Priscilla because she’d left him for another man. I was happy to reassure him, yet I couldn’t help but be amazed. Gosh, to be the greatest sex symbol in the world, and yet he’s so insecure he can’t stand to hear about anybody I ever dated. The first year of the four and half we would share, we were together twenty-four hours a day. If he was in the shower, he had me talk to him from outside the curtain as steam wafted the scent of his Neutrogena soap into the room. We slept, ate, read, laughed and loved together. To this day, he’s the best entertainer I’ve ever seen. He put everything into it. It didn’t take long for me to see the toll that his stage shows could take on him. After them he reverted to being my baby. He clutched me close. “Mommy, Buntyn’s really pitiful tonight,” he often said, using one of my nicknames for him, his

E LV I S In the summer of 1972, when I met him, Elvis was in his prime. Before then, and later on, he famously battled his weight. He loved to eat. But for this moment in time, he was perfection. He was so magnificent that after he’d fallen asleep I used to lie awake with my face drawn up close to his and memorize every pore. From our first moments together, our relationship was all-encompassing. We both thrilled at a slightly sharp, sarcastic sense of humor. But also we both understood the same manner of love, which was given unabashedly. He needed to receive a wealth of adoration, but he had a need to give as much love in return.

THE KING AND I “He was a fascinating, enigmatic, complex man,” says Thompson (with Elvis in the early ’70s).

voice babyish and ravenous with need. “Buntyn really needs extra love.” I gladly showered him with all the feelings of my heart. She got a glimpse of the extent of his drug use not long after they began living together. One day he asked me to accompany him to the dentist, where he had a filling done. Then the dentist left the room and Elvis opened the cabinet and took out a gigantic jar of pills. He began taking handfuls of pills and stuffing them into random pockets. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. “What are you doing?” I said. “Oh,heknowsI’mdoingthis,”Elvissaid.“Thisis just Seconal. Sleeping medication. It’s just tough to get prescriptions from doctors all the time.” Iknewhehadtotakesleepingpillstosleep, and something else to wake up, as well as often something to pep him up to go onstage. I was naïve. Maybe that’s just showbiz, I thought. And they were having fun together.

1. Thompson in the Graceland kitchen—where she whipped up Elvis’s favorite banana-andpeanut-butter sandwiches. 2. With Lisa Marie Presley around 1973. “He absolutely adored his little girl,” Thompson says. “I did too.” 3. After a concert in 1976. Why didn’t Elvis get help for his addictions? “People were less tolerant then. He would have been so embarrassed that people would think less of him.”

Elvis was forever surprising me with his unpredictable humor. He might come out of his bathroom, all stooped over, with his pajama bottoms pulled up to just below his nipples. “Honey,” he’d say in the rusty voice of an old man. “Are you ready to have a little hot sex?” She tried to help him eat healthily, but he loved peanut-butter-and-banana sandwiches (with a stick of butter spread on each) and ice cream. One night in 1973, he was standing in front of the mirror. “Oh God, I’m so f---ing fat,” he said. “Don’t say that in front of her,” I said, nodding toward Lisa Marie. She chimed in with her little girl’s 2 voice: “Daddy, you’re not f---ing fat.” We started laughing, and the whole mood lightened. He adored Lisa. We both did. “Not monogamous by nature,” as Thompson puts it, Elvis began sleeping with other women. His vanity was leading him to extremes: a face-lift at 40 and desperate diets, including one in which a doctor kept him under near-constant sedation for two weeks so he couldn’t eat. And he was increasingly impaired by drugs. One night in Vegas, Linda went to brush her teeth, leaving him eating chicken noodle soup on their bed. When she returned, Elvis was facedown in his bowl. Whatever he took besides the Placidyl for sleeping had hit him hard and fast. I shouted to wake him up, but he was completely passed out. Terrified, I jumped onto the bed. As I held his head up by his hair, he had chicken soup and noodles all over his face. I started to clean his throat, literally pulling out chunks of food. A doctor had left a shot of Ritalin by the bed in case he ever had too much of one of the sedatives he regularly took. I administered it to him and called one of his doctors, who arrived and gave him another shot. A few hours later, he awoke. “M-M-M-Mommy,” he said. “What, honey, are you all right?” I asked. “I-I-I-I had a-a-a dream,” he said. “I dreamed that I was dying.” Thompson finally decided she’d had enough and moved out in late 1976, though they remained on good terms. Eight months later the phone rang at Thompson’s L.A. apartment. “Linda!” a breathless 9-year-old Lisa Marie Presley urgently gasped. “My daddy’s dead!” “No! No!” I responded, frozen by a dread of acknowledging the truth. “He can’t be. He’s not, honey.” “Yes, he is! He smothered in the carpet!”

with our first son, Brandon. Bruce thought my pregnancy was beautiful. We continued to make love, and I felt very close to him. Then in 1985 Bruce came to me one day with a very somber look on his face. “There’s something about me that I really need to tell you . . .” he said. “I identify as a woman.” “I’m sorry, what?” I asked. “What does that even mean?” “I am a woman trapped in a man’s body,” Bruce declared. “Whoa, Bruce, honey, have you looked in a mirror?” I protested. “You are the epitome of the ideal man!” “And therein lies my problem,” he lamented. “I have lived in the wrong body my whole life. It is a living hell, and I really would like to move forward with the process of becoming a woman.” Thirty years ago, few of us were educated about the world of gender dysphoria. So my reaction was utter confusion, even desperation. My whole world began to crumble. They went into therapy, where Thompson hoped her husband’s mind might change. As we tried to work through our feelings, Bruce told me he was considering traveling out of the country, possibly to Denmark, to try to have the gender reassignment surgery anonymously and then come back as a female. “What about our children?” I asked. He thought maybe he could reenter their lives as a female relative. He was grasping for a lifeline. As devastated as I was, my heart bled for Bruce. Bruce told me that he still loved me, and after he transitioned, his

She had landed a role in TV’sHee Haw and was feeling steadier by the spring of 1979 when she met Caitlyn Jenner (then called Bruce), the “muscular, sweet, shy” 1976 Olympic medalist in the decathlon. After Jenner’s first marriage, to Chrystie Crownover, ended, Jenner and Thompson began dating. 4 Bruce was famous, but not “Elvis famous.” He was confident and lighthearted. Comfortable in his own skin. Or so it seemed. There had been a strong physical attraction between us from the moment we met. Bruce was masculine, virile, no matter what internal battles might have been raging. I never got the sense he was masquerading. wishwastostaymarried.ButIhadneverbeensexually attracted to women. I didn’t want to be married to a woman, even if she were the same living, breathing entity that was my husband, Bruce. One weekend Jenner asked Thompson to meet at a hotel in Manhattan. I knocked on the door with hopeful anticipation that my marriage might be rekindled on this trip. Bruce opened the door dressed as Caitlyn. Full wig. Makeup. Heels. A feminine dress adorning his muscular body. And a big smile on his red lips. I crumbled right there and burst into tears. “Oh, I’m sorry,” Bruce said. “I just wanted you to see who I really am. This is me!”

I still loved him. But now he felt more like my best girlfriend. We didn’t have sex again. Soon after, she told Jenner she had to leave the marriage. They both cried. Jenner moved out in August 1985, but they decided not to tell Brandon and Brody about their dad’s plans to transition. Yet the boys still noticed a change. One day, both boys came into the kitchen. “Mommy, we saw Daddy getting out of the shower, and Daddy has boobs!” they said. I felt such an obligation to keep Bruce’s gender dysphoria his secret that I did not even tell my sons until they were 31 and 29 years old, respectively. I wanted them to experience enough life and garner enough knowledge, confidence and compassionto be able to deal with their father’s true self. Jenner began dating Kris Kardashian and told Thompson in 1991 that they were getting married. He had not been able to bring himself to take the final step and complete his transition. Bruce told me that he was stopping the hormones he had been taking and that Kris was okay with everything. Bruce had no hair left on his face or chest. He had already had “feminizing” surgeries to his face, and he had substantial breasts. He would have had a tough time hiding his partial transition from someone with whom he had become intimate. But it was heartening to know Bruce had found someone with whom to share his life. Kris and Jenner married in April 1991; Thompson married David Foster the same year. She was hopeful their families could be close. Unfortunately, after marrying Kris, Bruce dismissed me from his life and limited his involvement with his children. Our families were very separate. There was no malice or hostility as far as I was concerned, just limited contact. In 2013, Bruce and Kris publicly separated, and the boys began seeing much more of him, without the cameras of Keeping Up with the Kardashians rolling. And then, he had his own announcement for them. He apparently sat all his children down individually and told them of his issue, then declared, “I’m going to go through the transition.” Caitlyn seems so much happier and freer in her feminine self. I sometimes find it surreal to look into her perfectly made-up, beautiful brown eyes, while remembering the masculine, gorgeous man who fathered my sons. That admission is just me being real. I completely accept, respect, and support Caitlyn, but I must admit, I sometimes miss Bruce.

Lie the other way! I think I’m a decent-looking 40, but if I told you I was 60 you’d be like, ‘You look incredible.’” She actually looks fantastic for 40, but that’s not the point. For the head writer of Comedy Central’s Inside Amy Schumer, the “tent-poles of femininity,” as she puts it in her hilarious new book You’ll Grow Out of It—“high heels, eye makeup, Diet Coke, smiling” and certainly shame about aging—serve mostly to hold women back, and she’s having none of it. Instead she’s using comedy to “What I hope people take away,” Klein says of her book, “is a laugh and feeling less alone.”

But she never thought much about it—until the night she had a sleepover for her 16th birthday at her Arizonahome. “Suddenly oneofmy friends manifested demons,” says Brynne, now 22, whose close friend Tess Scherkenback was there as well. “This deep voice came out of her saying, ‘She’s mine. You can’t have her.’ We were shocked. It was like, ‘Oh my God! What happened to my friend?’ ”

Thankfully the girls knew just who to call. Brynne’s father, Rev. Bob Larson, talked them through expelling the demon—an experience that left them both deeply intrigued. “We realized that spiritual warfare wasn’t just for my dad and his seminars or behind closed doors,” says Brynne, a senior at Arizona State University. “It applies to me. We wanted to learn more about it so the next time we’d be prepared.” Tess’s older sister Savannah, now 24, was interested as well—and thus were born the “Teenage Exorcists,” as they were later dubbed by the media. (No longer teenagers, they’ve since renamed themselves the “All-American Exorcists.”) “We went to Mr. Larson and asked him to train us,” says Tess, now 21 and " a college senior. ‘It’s quite an Since then, experience the three have put in thousands when you’re of hours of trainlooking pure ing and traveled evil straight all over the in the face’ world with Rev—TESS erend Larson, SCHERKENBACK a controversial televangelist-style pastor with his own YouTube channel, international exorcism school and rigorous schedule of public seminars where they profess to banish demons from attendees. The girls, who have their own Facebook page and website (allamerican exorcists.com), tally their demonic encounters in the thousands but still defer to Larson to lead the way. “We’re perfectly capable of doing our own exorcisms,” says Brynne, “but it’s not a smart thing to do by yourself. If something goes wrong, Dad is always there to watch our backs and just make sure everything’s okay.” Not long after their debut in Pasadena in January 2012, the girls landed in the media spotlight—and became the subject of several skeptical TV stories, mostly because of their association with Brynne’s father, who’s well-known for soliciting donations and peddling his books at his seminars (the public exorcisms are free; 74

We don’t get paid for it. We don’t want to get paid for it. It’s so we can help people. We’re highly qualified.” While demon-hunting has become their shared passion, the girls first met in 2005 through another mutual hobby—karate. “We were working toward our black belt together,” says Brynne. Still, she says, “it’s hard for him to see us cut down by people that don’t know us. So that can be a little difficult.” These days, with newlywed Savannah moving cross-country to Washington, D.C., Brynne taking premed courses in Arizona, and Tess starting her final year in college in Southern California, the girls have time for only one or two public seminars a year—and no plans to make it a career. HEROES AMONG US

Raising My Best Friend’s 6 Kids GROWING UP IN SOUTH BOSTON,

Va., Stephanie Culley and Beth Laitkep attended the same high school, worked at Walmart together and shared secrets about their steady boyfriends over lunch. “She was like a sister,” says Culley. “I loved and cared about her deeply.” After graduation the two lost touch, but a Facebook message 20 years later rekindled their friendship. “I know it was meant to be,” says Culley, 39. “We just instantly reconnected.” What she didn’t know was that within a year, Laitkep, 39, would be dying of cancer—and her last wish would be for Culley to raise her six kids, ages 2 to 15. “She said, ‘If I don’t get a miracle, I need you to take my babies,’ ” says Culley, who already had three kids—Cole, 10, Hayden, 6,

and Calen, 2—with her husband of 13 years, Donnie, 41. “There was no hesitation. . . . This was something we were going to do.” Laitkep underwent a double mastectomy in 2014 and thought she’d gotten her miracle. “She thought she was in remission,” says Culley. But in April Laitkep was diagnosed with leptomeningeal carcinomatosis—a rare complication in which cancer spreads to the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Doctors gave her a month to live, and she died on May 19. Two months later Culley and her husband, a construction supervisor, were granted full custody of Laitkep’s children. (Her ex-husband is the father of her four older kids; her ex-boyfriend is dad to the two youngest. Neither opposed the custody

KATE MCKINNON Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series | Saturday Night Live (NBC)

From the time she was 12, Kate McKinnon, now 32, had a goal: to make it to Saturday Night Live. “Seeing Cheri Oteri and Molly Shannon and Ana Gasteyer do their thing and be unafraid to look ridiculous and outlandish, I thought, ‘That’s me. That’s the job I should have,’” she says. “Thank God I got to have that job, because I’m not qualified for anything else. I have no skills. I’m bad at most things.” McKinnon has placed her own stamp on the show, with impressions of Justin Bieber and more going viral. This summer she joined a comedic who’s who in Ghostbusters, with Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and SNL costar Leslie Jones. Before her Oct. 1 SNL premiere, she’ll join Wiig in the caper movie Masterminds. Then she’ll reprise her Hillary Clinton impression for the fall. “It’s going to be very interesting and a very good time to be a comedian,” she says. “Everyone is just sort of licking their lips and marveling at how delicious this is.”

When Tracee Ellis Ross found out she was nominated for her first Emmy, “I ran around my dining room table and out to the courtyard yelling to myself, ‘Where am I going? You need to call someone. Call someone!’” So she called her mom, Diana Ross. “We screamed together for a bit,” says Tracee, 43, who is in awe that her nomination puts her on a list of just five black women ever to be nominated for a lead role in a comedy. “When you say the names, I get very emotional. Diahann Carroll, Nell Carter, Isabel Sanford, Phylicia Rashad and now Tracee Ellis Ross,” she says. “ ‘Just pinch me’ is all I can say.”

With an intoxicating brand of angry exuberance, Samantha Bee, 46, has shaken up late-night television. As the sole female host, Bee has had to contend with only one major criticism so far: Why didn’t she get her own show sooner? Originally from Toronto, Bee had her breakout moment in 2003 when she joined The Daily Show with Jon Stewart as a correspondent, leaving in 2015 to launch Full Frontal. A mother of three (with her husband, fellow former Daily Show correspondent Jason Jones), Bee says her old colleagues have been very supportive. “We express our love by sending edibles—food, not the other types of edibles. It’s really an orgy of food.” She also credits one man for helping make the launch successful: “I would like to thank Jesus for sending Donald Trump to me. Now I would like to return him.”

Niecy Nash had no agent when she asked a casting director if she could audition for the 1995 film Boys on the Side. “I told him, ‘I’m broke. I have a baby. Nash, 46, has gone on to be known for her “over the top” characters on Reno 911 and Scream Queens, so she was surprised when she was first nominated for playing Getting On’s grounded Nurse Didi in 2015. “I thought it was a fluke,” she says. “But now I feel like my peers are saying, ‘No. We see you.’ And it’s nice to be seen.”

Auditions weren’t fun for a young Allison Janney. “There were a lot of tearful subway rides home,” she says. “People would say I couldn’t work because of my height. My career didn’t really start until I was 38.” But the 6-ft.-tall star quickly made up for lost time. This year Janney, 56, could take home her eighth and ninth Emmys (she’s also nominated for guest-starring on Showtime’s Masters of Sex), which means she’d tie or surpass Cloris Leachman for the record for most Primetime Emmy wins. “I feel the pressure,” says Janney. “But truthfully I’m just happy to be invited to the party.”

Here are the key moves: PICK A COLOR COMBO Choose neutrals that complement your natural skin tone. If you want to dial up the drama a bit, go for a peach, rose or berry palette. ACCENTUATE YOUR EYES Use a shimmery shadow to add dimension to your lids and bring out your eye color. GO FOR RADIANT SKIN Apply a cream blush on the apples of your cheeks for a glowy effect. MATTE LIPSTICK The most desired lip look in Hollywood right now is a suedelike texture that’s reminiscent of a ’90s supermodel. Here’s how to master it, courtesy of Olivia Culpo’s makeup artist Kira Nasrat. SELECT YOUR SHADE Opt for the matte equivalent of your favorite lipstick color. PREP YOUR LIPS Apply lip balm, then let it sit for at least five minutes before you reach for the lipstick to avoid a cakey look. BE PRECISE Distribute the lip color with a brush. Press your lips into a tissue, then add another layer of lipstick. Use a lip liner the same color as your shade to perfect your shape and prevent feathering.

beauty HACK

TAKE IT OFF Matte formulas are notoriously tricky to remove. An organic oil or shea butter (give it 30 seconds before wiping away) is your best bet.

To give your creamy lip colors a matte effect: Blot excess product, then use a fluffy brush to gently sweep a translucent finishing powder on your lips, says Nasrat.

2 tsp. fresh lemon juice 1 tsp. Dijon mustard 23⁄4 tsp. kosher salt, divided 1 large pasteurized egg yolk* 43⁄4 cups canola oil, divided 11⁄ 2 tsp. sriracha chili sauce 1 garlic clove, smashed 1⁄ 2 cup plain white cornmeal 1⁄ 2 cup all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1⁄ 2 cup buttermilk 1 large egg 2 cups thinly sliced okra 1⁄ 2 cup finely chopped sweet onion (from 1 onion) 1⁄ 2 tsp. black pepper

1. Whisk lemon juice, mustard, 3⁄ 4 teaspoon salt and egg yolk in a medium bowl until smooth, about 3 minutes. Slowly drizzle in 3⁄4 cup oil, whisking constantly, until mixture thickens and oil blends easily, taking care to ensure mixture does not break. (If mixture gets too thick, add 1 teaspoon water.) Whisk in sriracha and garlic; cover and chill until ready to use. 2. Stir together cornmeal, flour, baking powder and 1 teaspoon salt in a large bowl. Whisk buttermilk and egg in a small bowl. Add buttermilk mixture to cornmeal mixture; stir just until combined. Toss together okra, onion, pepper and 1⁄ 2 teaspoon salt in a medium bowl; fold into

buttermilk-cornmeal mixture. 3. Pour remaining 4 cups canola oil into a large straightsided skillet to a depth of 1 inch; place over medium heat until hot but not smoking (about 340°). Drop batter by rounded tablespoonfuls into hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd skillet. Cook until golden on 1 side, about 6 minutes. Turn and cook until golden and cooked through, about 4 minutes. Remove fritters from skillet; drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with remaining 1⁄ 2 teaspoon salt. Serve fritters with sriracha mayonnaise. Serves: 4 Active time: 30 minutes Total time: 30 minutes

Jeff Bridges THE OSCAR WINNER, 66, PLAYS A GRITTY TEXAS RANGER IN HELL OR HIGH WATER Last game I played Pass the Pigs! I played with Josh Brolin on the set of a movie I’m doing right now called Granite Mountain. It was Josh, Miles Teller and a bunch of other guys. Man, I think I won!

Last DIY My wife [Susan] and I are moving from the house we’ve lived in for 22 years. We’re doing the downsizing thing. So the latest home improvement to the new house is an outdoor fire pit. I’ve kind of designed where to put the moss and the bricks.

Last compliment I gave One of my joys of making movies is I get to do it with my buddy Loyd Catlett, my stand-in for over 60 movies. [Recently] we got to compliment each other about how much we appreciate each other and are glad that we’re in each other’s lives.

Last time my kids made me laugh We get on FaceTime and make each other laugh and chortle. Have you seen these things where they make combinations of different faces? My daughter Hayley sent a very scary combo of her and her boyfriend.
