MR. ELIOT

A series called ‘’The neighboorhood’’ by the portuguese author Gonçalo M. Tavares that explores a whole city of excentric characters. We focus in one of them : Mr Eliot.

MR ELIOT AND THE CONFERENCES PHYSICALLY

MENTALLY

He is tall: 1.8 m

Follow rules of mathematical introduction’’

logic: ‘’Deduction

Wants to explain his views and be heard, but doesn’t care about small crowds. (Contradition?) Follows a process;

1) He creates a loop inside a loop inside the loop. 2) To explain how he “feels” the lyrics, he mentions some measures, as in: space, time, scale, decay, orderliness ataxia. 3) He tries to break the lyrics into words to understand those to be able to build up the sentece again and get meanings. 4) The purpose of the lectures , is not to explain the lyrics, something like that would be impossible, the lyric says what it says. 6)In the end, at the last lecture, he doesn't say anything... its time for the audience to 'feel” , set free from his guidance.

7ยบ CONFERENCE OF MR. ELIOT EXPLICATION OF A VERSE DE PAUL CELAN SEVEN NIGHTS HIGHER CHANGES THE RED TO RED

Conference is left UNDONE - as a challege, When we do try to complete it, by going to the original poem, we find a subtle menssage.

POETS - PAUL CELAN Do not seek your lips in my mouth, Nor before the gate the stranger, Nor in the tear eye.

DO NOT LOOK FOR THE ANWSERS WHERE THE ARE.

Seven nights higher changes the red to red, Seven hearts deeper beats your hand to the door, Seven roses later rumored the source

HE NORMALIZED THE METHOD TO DECIPHER THIS VERSES. FEEL THEm

THIS CHAPTER BREAKS THE RHYTHM AND THE ROUTINE.

DESIGN INTERPRETATION OF MR. ELIOT

GENERAL IDEA Mr. Eliot emphasizes in the importance of nothing, of a gap, the 7th lecture is a gap where you end up. Mr Eliot talks a lot about the city, he doesn't like it, it is too predictable and doesn't let people enjoy a meaningless moment. So, the space that expresses those ideas had to be an empty space in a fulled city, like Lisbon. We chose to do the installation at Castel os SĂŁo Jorge. From there you can see the city in distance while you are in the city. People feel freer at places like that, feeling that we reach the truth. The installation is a concrete construction on the castle's territory which is divided into two parts. The lines, which are part of a grid, and the gap, which is a part of a sphere. The lines organize the planting of lemon trees at the field, and lead to the gap. The grid symbolizes the way that mr.Eliot analyzes the tongues, the lemon trees symbolize the lyrics, and the gap symbolizes the meaning of the last lecture.

Location The Castle of Saint George is one of the oldest edifices in Lisbon and, by force of its historical background. The castle is located in the Alfama district, on the highest hilltop of Lisbon, meaning it provides the best panoramic views of the city And this location was chosen exacly because of its height – as in a representation of achieving truth, that is what Mr. Eliot is always looking .

LOCATION: CASTLE OF SĂƒO JORGE

The climax of the intervention is where people can sit to watch perfomaces, hear Eliot’s conferences or do nothing. The circle Simbolizes the 7th Conference.

Lines os Cement follow the grid it connects with the Artist and also the organized toughts of Mr. Eliot.

The installation is a concrete construction on the castle's territory. The lines, which are part of a grid, and the gap, which is a part of a sphere. The lines organize the planting of small lemon trees at the field, and lead to the gap. The grid symbolizes the way that mr.Eliot analyzes things, the lemon trees symbolize the lyrics, and the semi sphere symbolizes the gap, the last lecture.
