As we were finishing up the July issue, painstakingly deciding what articles we needed to run and verifying all of the facts, I remembered the last line in most instruction manuals that says, “Do not begin step A until you have read all the instructions.” This issue is very much the same in my opinion. Consider yourself warned; do not start another day in the shop until you have read the July 2017 issue of NOLN. National Oil and Lube News prides itself on being the information source for the quick oil and lube industry. Every month we are looking for and verifying the information we all need to maintain successful operations. However, this year’s July issue has gone over and beyond. Normally, I use this space to highlight a few articles of interest or mention one of my teammates who has had an exceptional month, but this month was a true team effort. From our passionate sales team to the very talented editorial department and the tenacious circulation crew, you all went over and beyond on this one. Well-done team! As if the issue alone wasn’t enough, this month we have launched a new concept that has been in the works for a while. Internally, we refer to them as our “evergreen series” but you will see the title as Business Operations Guide. In a nutshell, these are must-have informational guides that contain proven theories and ideas on successful operations. I would like to give a special thanks to Phillips 66 for partnering with us on this first edition of the Business Operations Guide. Let us know your thoughts. We have worked on this concept for a while and actually delayed the publication until we got it right. These guides are for you to keep long after the magazine has been piled on top of the other past issues of NOLN. Many of you have seen the information and asked about our newest, exciting tool to bring our industry together at our “Quick” events. The September event is almost sold out, but don’t worry, we are already in the planning stages of the next event that will be held in the 1st quarter of 2018. Look for your save the date reminder coming out soon. As always keep on lubin’. S

“It is our goal to take the Motul brand name into popular racing circuits embedded in North America’s culture,” said Guillaume Pailleret, president of Motul, North America. “Partnering with the SRTC as well as the Canadian Rally Championship for the year ahead provides our operation with great potential for exposure and establishing Canadian networks.” SRTC’s vehicles are maintained and serviced by Rocket Rally Racing. They boast seven National Overall Rally Championships, as well as five North American Titles. SRTC is the factory rally team for Subaru Canada. In 2016, Subaru Rally Team Canada driver, Antoine L’Estage, a nine-time Canadian Drivers Champion and his 2016 co-driver, Darren Garrod won the Canadian Rally Championships and, in doing so, awarded Subaru Canada a record 12th manufacturer title. For 2017, Antoine is rejoined by Alan Ockwell — a four-time Canadian Co-Drivers Champion — to campaign for another record title. “We are excited to re-ignite this partnership with Rocket Rally after a long absence,”

bly excited to see it in action at this year’s Canadian Rally Championship.” The Canadian Rally Championship series was officially launches in 1957, making it the longest-running national motorsport series in Canada. The championship is comprised of seven rounds: three in British Columbia, one in Ontario and three in Quebec. Royal Purple Synthetic Oil Headlines Mazda Road to Indy Rounds at Indianapolis Royal Purple Synthetic Oil, the official oil of the Mazda Road to Indy presented by Cooper Tires, took its partnership with the driver development ladder system one step further. Royal Purple titled all six rounds of competition at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 12 and 13, 2017. All races were in support of the Lupus Foundation of America. Royal Purple Synthetic Oil continues to expand its role within the Mazda Road to Indy. Last year, the company debuted the Royal Purple Synthetic Oil “Slickest Pass” Award

where a season-ending honor and $5,000 cash prize is given to competitors in each of the following series: • Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda • Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires • Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires “We are extremely proud of our partnership with the Mazda Road to Indy and look forward to helping young talent outperform the competition as they journey through major milestones in their careers, while also being able to help raise funds in the fight against lupus,” said David Hamilton, director of Sponsorships at Royal Purple Synthetic Oil. “The color purple represents lupus awareness, and this is a perfect partnership for the Royal Purple brand.” May was Lupus Awareness Month, and Royal Purple Synthetic Oil and the Mazda Road to Indy joined forces to help bring attention to this mysterious, chronic autoimmune disease that sees 16,000 new cases reported each year. All 50-plus cars across the three series carried a decal in support of the Lupus Foundation of America, and a special hashtag — #RaceToEndLupus — was utilized. Fans also showed their support by donating on behalf of their favorite drivers via a special page on the national Lupus Foundation website. Belardi Auto Racing, spearheaded by team owner Brian Belardi and team manager John Brunner, has been a staunch supporter of the Lupus Foundation of America.

“When close friends of our team, Emilee Hunt and Addie, were diagnosed with lupus, we decided to put the Lupus Foundation of America decals on our Indy Lights cars to help raise awareness in May,” Brunner said. “That was 2014, and when we heard many other competitors commenting about how lupus

of the Independent Lubricant Manufacturers Association (ILMA). Membership in this national organization is limited to the leading providers of lubricants and reflects the rapid growth of the company and its Starfire brand. “This is an important sign of our emergence as an important player in the industry,” said Kurt Deimer, president and CEO of Coolants Plus. “ILMA only accepts the most reputable companies in the business to become members.”

ILMA includes blenders, manufacturers and marketers at the highest level of the industry. For more than 70 years. The organi-

zation has been the voice of member companies that produce more than a quarter of the nation’s lubricants. “Our membership in ILMA demonstrates our commitment to the industry and our customers and distributor network — they are what really drive growth,” said Darrin Ward, chief operating officer. “When we support their growth, they drive ours.” Take 5 Oil Change Acquires QuickStop Oilube Take 5 Oil Change recently announced the acquisition of QuickStop Oilube of Burlington, Kentucky, which operates 10 locations in the greater Cincinnati market. As more and more vehicles roll off the factory floor and into your bays factory-filled with synthetic oils, and since more high-mileage vehicles travel up and down the road than ever before, oil companies are offering specialized oils to meet these needs. If you are not stocking the specialty motor oils – synthetic, synthetic-blend, high-mileage, diesel, etc. – to service the varied vehicles rolling through your bays, you could be at risk of falling behind your competitors. That’s why we’ve compiled our annual Specialty Motor Oil Guide, a comprehensive list of the specialty motor oils available.

What is “speciality motor oil”? Really, anything that falls outside the term “conventional oil.” (While we know that some marketers actually produce their “conventional” oil from a blend of synthetic and conventional base stocks, for the purposes of this guide, we only list those products that are specifically marketed as a “synthetic-blend.”) We also list which engine oil specifications a product meets, be it API, ILSAC, ACEA, dexos or other. Finally, a big note of thanks to Shell for sponsoring this year’s guide.

Used Oil Filters Cause New Hardships With recent changes to used oil filter disposal laws, many shops across the country are facing stiff fines and penalties; some are even closing their doors. Rules around used oil filter disposal are precisely defined by federal and state regulatory bodies, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC). Business owners need to stay current with updated laws and manage their waste properly or face heavy fines, or even worse, business closure. Improper management of used oil filters can result in penalties up to $10,000 per day per violation.

Use extreme caution when hot-draining oil filters to avoid burns, and always wear protective equipment, such as safety glasses and gloves. First, remove the filter from the engine while it is still warm. Carefully puncture the dome end of the filter, then turn it upside down, so it can drain completely into your used oil container for recycling. Allow the filter to drain overnight or a minimum of 12 hours to remove all oil.

SKINNY ON 0W-16 OIL: Coming Soon to the USA; Poured in Japan Since the Late 1990s

By Tammy Neal

The new ILSAC specification for passenger car motor oils, GF-6, is expected to have a first license date of April 1, 2018 — although, this license date has been delayed several times during the development process and some experts expect it to slip into 2019. Additive companies and oil marketers are in the process of evaluating prototype GF-6 engine oil for performance in the newly developed engine tests. According to Lubrizol, the result of this testing will aid in the setting of balanced commercially feasible performance standards for ILSAC GF-6 engine oils. The trend to lower viscosities will continue with the introduction of a new viscosity grade in GF-6 — 0W-16. Although it may sound new and scary, 0W-16 oils have been in use for almost two decades in Japan. JXTG Nippon Oil & Energy, makers of ENEOS oil, have been working with Japanese automakers to develop 0W-16 oils since the late 1990s. We caught up with a couple of their representatives — Hiroya Miyamoto, senior manager of OEM group, and Hiromi Takahashi, deputy general manager — to get some further insight into what the U.S. might expect with the introduction of 0W-16 oils.

NOLN: Can you share some information about what you’ve been doing with 0W-16 oils in Japan? Miyamoto: 0W-16 oil was introduced in Japan before 2000. 0W-16 showed higher fuel economy than 0W-20 engine oil. It will also give you remarkable quick engine starts at cold temperatures. There are several concerns [about 0W-16 oils] due to their lower viscosity, like increased wear, increased oil consumption and lower oil pressure. But our long history [with 0W-16] has addressed these concerns. The 0W16 project is just the beginning of what JXTG Nippon Oil is striving

to do to offset carbon footprints. Actually, we are currently working on an 0W-8 oil. Takahashi: We are taking our knowledge and what we have already been doing in the past in Japan and trying to expand it here in the States. There are products like the 0W-8 oil that we have already been working on — it’s been a couple of years since we started filling some cars with it

back in Japan. We don’t know as of yet when it will be coming to the U.S. market, but there will be a target point for that in the future. We have been doing 0W-16 oil since the late 1990s, and it’s finally coming out here in the U.S. market. NOLN: What are some of the concerns about 0W-16 oils? Miyamoto: [Some may be worried that] lowering viscosity might cause increased wear or a pressure issue. Takahashi: Those were concerns with having such a low viscosity oil, but with more than 15 years of background in 0W-16 oil, we are able to address those issues and create a benefit of increasing fuel efficiency, when compared to 0W-20 oil. NOLN: What type of fuel efficiency increase are you seeing with 0W16 oil? Miyamoto: So we tested a Honda Fit on a dynamometer. The 0W-16 showed an improvement in fuel economy by 2 percent when compared to 0W-20. Takahashi: Two percent doesn’t sound like much just car by car, but when you look at the overall carbon footprint one company can make by saving 2 percent, it is quite substantial — especially when car companies like Toyota are selling millions of cars a year. Saving 2 percent on half of that fleet really makes a difference environmentally. NOLN: What are some of the changes manufacturers will make in engines as we start to move into these lower viscosities? Miyamoto: It depends on the company, but we need to control some factors like pressure and friction conditions. NOLN: Are there any vehicles on the road in the United States today that are or will be recommending use of an 0W-16 oil? Takahashi: We don’t know what the recommended use in the U.S. will be yet. We know some Japanese manufacturers are starting to first fill 0W-16, and those vehicles will be available for the 2018 model year. So, these cars are going to be coming out in the next couple of months. In regard to what the OEs are going to recommend, we are still unclear; however, the fuel mileage estimates they state on those vehicles are [with] using 0W-16. NOLN: What are some of the cars in Japan being factory filled with 0W-16? Will these be coming to the U.S. with 0W-16? Takahashi: We know what cars that 0W-16 is recommended for. For example, Toyota Prius C, Honda Fit after 2013 model year and Honda Hybrid vehicles such as Accord, Odyssey and CR-Z. Those are the things they are doing overseas in Japan, so it may be a guideline as to what they are going to be doing here. Now, we recommend 0W-16 for 2018 model year Toyota Camry and the Camry Hybrid that are manufactured in the U.S. NOLN: If the U.S CAFE standards don’t shake out as planned, is 0W16 still relevant and can it justify the dollars to bring 0W-16 to market in the U.S.? Miyamoto: CAFE standards push the need for improved fuel economy and lower viscosity oil in the marketplace. However, Japan also has their own regulations for increasing fuel efficiency and reducing carbon dioxide, so 0W-16 would have been created even if CAFE standards did not exist.

NOLN: Are there enough benefits in the four-point difference between 0W-20 oil and 0W-16 oil to justify the dollars it takes to get it to market? Takahashi: We believe so. It is one step that oil companies like us are taking to try to make a more environmentally friendly product. In regard to the four points, in the past when comparing 0W-20 to 5W-30, we were getting anywhere from a 2 to 4 percent increase in fuel efficiency. With this four point difference [between 0W-20 and 0W-16], we are already getting a 2 percent increase in fuel efficiency. NOLN: What base oil stock is 0W-16 made from, and does it have any special properties? Miyamoto: It is a 100-percent synthetic oil made from Group III base stock. The key point to 0W-16 is formulation, not raw material. The most important thing is [the formulation of the] base oil and additives. Takahashi: The biggest thing we see when it comes to specialty oils like this is, any blender can come up with an oil that is a 0W-16 viscosity, but after the product is utilized, will it be able to withstand the heat; is there enough anti-wear protection and oil film retention; everything comes in to play. I remember a lot of the fear when 5W-20 came out, people were afraid because it was something new. A big peace of mind should come with knowing we’ve been doing this for more than a decade. I think that’s enough time for us to really perfect what is needed to maximize a 0W16 on the OE side. NOLN: How backward compatible will 0W-16 be? Takahashi: That really depends on what the OEs are going to state. We are usually pretty handcuffed on how they state it. Some of the vehicles that require 0W-20 can probably use 0W-16, but it all depends on what manufacturers want to claim and allow. NOLN: Has JXTG Nippon been involved in any of the GF-6 standards development or testing? Miyamoto: We are not very involved with the development of the GF-6 standard, but because of our long history with this product, we believe API and ILSAC looked into our knowledge to develop the standard for GF-6. Actually, a Japanese automobile company and JXTG provided supporting data for 0W-16. NOLN: What’s next after 0W-16? Miyamoto: Most Japanese automakers have R&D centers in Japan, with which our JXTG technical team cooperates. Japan has some of the tightest environmental regulations in the world, and therefore, the Japanese manufacturers tend to use lower viscosity oils for new cars in Japan. The 0W-8 oil we have developed is already available in the Japanese market. Takahashi: We are one of the only suppliers at this point that have 0W-8 oil, but we aren’t stopping there. Be looking for even lower viscosities to come. S

The New Diesel Engine Oil Standards and Ford’s Reaction to Them Late last fall, API introduced two new diesel engine oil standards — CK-4 and FA-4. First licensing of these oils was December 1, 2016. By Tammy Neal

Ford warns that customers and installers should not use oils labeled CK-4/ SN unless they have been approved by Ford Motor Company to meet WSSM2C171-F1.

What’s the difference between the two oil standards? CK-4 engine oils are a direct replacement for CJ-4 oils. The new FA-4 engine oils are offered in lower viscosity grades and are designed primarily for next-generation engines — found primarily in overthe-road trucks — to help maximize fuel economy without sacrificing engine protection. FA-4 oils have limited backward compatibility, but won’t be widely found in our industry anyway. CK-4 and FA-4 are bright, shiny and new, but not everyone is excited about them. Ford has actually issued a position statement on the oils. Why? According to Steve Swedberg’s article “It’s Always Something” in the January 2017 edition of Lubes and Greases magazine, “Ford has seen accelerated valve train wear in their 6.7L engines with some CK-4 and FA-4 formulations with less than 1,000 parts per million phosphorus

that they haven’t seen with CJ-4 oils. Based on these results, Ford has wear concerns about CK-4 and FA-4 in both new and older Ford engines.” The Updated Ford Motor Company CK-4/FA-4 Ford Position Statement said, “Due to its low viscosity FA-4 should not be used in any Ford diesel vehicles at this time.” It continued, “Ford will not be recommending the use of CK-4 motor oils in any Ford diesel engines, new or old. Ford testing has shown some CK-4 type formulations have shown inadequate wear protection compared to CJ-4 formulations developed and licensed before 2016. “Ford now recommends using oils that meet our OEM specification, Ford Material Engineering Specification WSS-M2C171-F1. … WSSM2C171-F1 contains all the requirements of CK-4 with additional Ford requirements for added engine protection. “For a short period of time, an oil

showing CJ-4 in the API donut, without showing CK-4, would be acceptable for service even if not showing WSS-M2C171-F1. This oil would most likely be an older CJ-4 formulation, developed and licensed prior to 2016. Years of experience and Ford testing has shown that these older CJ-4 formulations provide the necessary engine protection in all Ford diesel engines where CJ-4 and older C categories are recommended. Some of these CJ-4 oils could be available for up to a year after December 1, 2016.” Ford warns that customers and installers should not use oils labeled CK-4/SN unless they have been approved by Ford Motor Company to meet WSS-M2C171-F1. These oils will possibly be found in SAE 10W40, 15W-40, 5W-40 and 0W-40 viscosities. At this time, according to Ford, SAE 10W-30 oils showing CK-4/SN cannot meet WSSM2C171-F1 and should be avoided.

The New Generation of dexos and ACEA Specifications

By Tammy Neal

The last couple of years we have seen updates to two of the oil specification categories common in the industry — dexos and ACEA. They are staying cutting-edge, adding engine tests and advancing their motor oil requirements to provide protection for the car manufacturers who depend on them.

dexos1 Gen 2 The most current dexos1 specification (dexos1 Gen 2) was released in 2015 to provide even higher engine performance and protection, particularly low speed pre-ignition (LSPI) protection in small displacement turbo-charged engines. GM has developed four new engine tests for this updated specification: • New General Motors Oxidation & Deposit Test (GMOD) verifies the improved oxidation and deposit control characteristics. • New Stochastic Pre-ignition Test verifies the added protection for turbocharged engines and pre-ignition concerns. • New Turbocharger Deposit Test verifies the added protection for turbocharged engines and minimizes deposit formation, which ensures optimal performance during engine life. • New Aeration Test (bubble control) ensures the air bubbles in the oil dissipate quickly to improve oil performance. The industry specification API ILSAC GF-6 is not expected to be available until 2018, and the current specification does not require engine tests for pre-ignition, turbocharger deposits or aeration. For more information about dexos1 Gen 2, visit: www.centerforqa.com/dexos/

ACEA 2016 Oil Sequence Updates The latest engine oil specifications from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) first launched on December 1, 2016, and will become mandatory on December 1, 2017. These new sequences replaced the ACEA 2016 Oil Sequences, effective December 1, 2016. The ACEA 2016 European Oil Sequences for service-fill oils have three classes of sequences: 36 NOLN | www.noln.net

NOL_1-55.indd 36

one for gasoline and light duty diesel engines (A); one specifically for gasoline and light duty diesel engines with after treatment devices (C) and one for heavy duty diesel engines (E). Within each of these sets there are categories that reflect different performance requirements — three (A3/B3, A3/B4 and A5/B5) for gasoline and light duty diesel engines, five (C1, C2, C3, C4, C5) specifically for engines with after treatment devices and four (E4, E6, E7, E9) for heavy duty diesel engines. Here is more detail on some of the 2016 ACEA Sequences: • A1/B1: Category was removed. • A3/B3: Stable, stay-in-grade engine oil intended for use in passenger car and light duty van gasoline and diesel engines with extended drain intervals where specified by the engine manufacturer, and for severe operating conditions as defined by the engine manufacturer. • A3/B4: Stable, stay-in-grade engine oil intended for use at extended drain intervals in passenger car and light duty van gasoline and direct injection (DI) diesel engines, but also suitable for applications described under A3/B3. • A5/B5: Stable, stay-in-grade engine oil intended for use at extended drain intervals in passenger car and light duty van gasoline and diesel engines designed to be capable of using low viscosity oils with high temperature high shear (HTHS) viscosity of 2.9 to 3.5 mPa s. • C1: Stable, stay-in-grade engine oil with lowest sulphated ash, phosphorus, sulphur (SAPS) level, intended for use as catalyst compatible oil at extended drain intervals in vehicles with all types of modern aftermarket systems and high performance passenger car and light duty van

gasoline and DI diesel engines designed to be capable of using low viscosity oils with a minimum HTHS viscosity of 2.9 mPa s. What’s Next for the Corporate Average Fuel Economy Standards: Will Trump Roll Back the CAFE? By Peter Suciu

Last fall, Donald Trump was elected President in part by running on a platform that would deregulate business. One part of this was aimed squarely at the automotive industry, which has remained one of the most heavily regulated industries in the country. Since the election, car makers and their lobbying group, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers – which is made up of 12 companies – have called on the administration to reopen a midterm review of the EPA’s Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. This is a reaction to the 2016 move by the Obama administration’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which along with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), locked in fuel-economy emissions targets for automakers. Under this mandate, automakers would have to achieve an average 54.5 mpg by 2025. CAFE standards, which were first introduced in the United States in 1975, are designed to steadily increase incrementally on certain vehicles through 2025. Currently 35-plus miles per gallon is required for certain 2017 models already in showrooms.

The fuel economy standards were supposed to be reviewed in 2018, but after a brief comment period that ended December 30 of last year, the EPA pushed through portions of the regulations before then President-Elect Trump took office. The Auto Alliance called for this goal to be revisited, arguing that the move “unnecessarily politicized” the midterm review of the emission standards by moving to finalize the regulations ahead of schedule. In a letter to the new EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, the Alliance wrote that the “standards threaten to depress an industry that can ill afford spiraling regulatory costs.” The trade group added that 1.1 million jobs could even be lost due to the regulations. On May 11, Democratic senators also responded to the EPA and urged the agency not to roll back federal fuel-economy standards for cars and trucks. The lawmakers, led by Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts, have argued that the move could harm consumers and also lead to costly litigation.

“It is clear some automakers felt the comment period ended too early and that the voices weren’t heard, including a thorough discussion of the cost effectiveness of this technology.” Dan Welch, Center for Climate and Energy Solutions

I In a letter to the EPA’s Pruitt, the 11 senators said the auto emissions standards are, in fact, economically feasible and technologically achievable. The lawmakers wrote, “They will benefit consumers, saving them billions of dollars at the pump and reduce our carbon pollution. It is critical they remain in place.” The lawmakers further added that the goal of greater fuel efficiency would enhance national security by reducing America’s reliance on foreign oil and added that automakers have thrived under CAFE standards. The senators suggested that 700,000 jobs have been created since 2009 when the more stringent standards were implemented and that sales of vehicles have grown for seven straight years to record highs last year. Environmental groups have supported the calls by the lawmakers, citing climate and consumer protection. President Trump has responded by announcing an executive order requiring the EPA to reopen a review of fuel-economy and emissions standards, but how exactly the EPA will respond has yet to be determined. “It is still hard to say; it is one area where we really won’t know anything until official policy is rolled out,” said Devin Lindsay, principal analyst at IHS Automotive. “There are calls for the mid-term 2018 review to be put back for evaluation, but we have to wait to see where exactly the current administration is going with things,” Lindsay added. “Under the original rules, there was a call for a midterm review to see how effective and affordable the technology would be,” explained Dan Welch, solutions fellow specializing in transportation for the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions. “This commentary period was open until 2018, but the EPA finalized the rules in early 2017, and it should be stressed that it was OK for them to do so; the EPA didn’t step outside the bounds in doing so,” Welch said. “In a sense, this was turning the paper in early.” However, the Auto Alliance has argued that fewer than 3.5 percent of new vehicles would meet the 2025 stringent targets locked in by the Obama administration before he left office. “Even under EPA’s optimistic estimates, the automotive industry will have to spend a staggering $200 billion between 2012 and 2025 to comply,” Mitch Bainwol, the president of the Auto Alliance, wrote to Pruitt in February. “It is clear some automakers felt the comment period ended too early and that the voices weren’t heard, including a thorough discussion of the cost effectiveness of this technology,” Welch said. While 2025 is still eight years away — a long time for most Americans who still too often can only plan for tomorrow — for the auto industry it is practically around the corner. “It is just two model cycles away,” Lindsay said. “Plans are already in the works; R&D has already been invested. Automakers can’t wait any longer.”

However, it should be emphasized the auto industry doesn’t want to see the standards discarded — perhaps just slowed down so technology can be developed to meet the goals. “The automakers will continue to make progress towards meeting those standards, and that isn’t going to change,” Lindsay explained. “All the automakers know what they have to do; there is no other option. In the past there have been fines and the manufacturers have paid these when not meeting standards, but that isn’t an option now.” It is still likely that the Trump EPA, as well as the Department of Transportation — which oversees the NHTSA — may re-open the review process, and in this case, the automakers may be able to adjust the timetable. It won’t come without a fight, however; one that could result in a new war between the states. California and 12 other states currently have stricter standards for fuel economy; while California has even received a waiver from the federal government that allowed the Golden State to enforce its much tougher standards. “If the administration teams up with auto companies to weaken these standards or challenge California’s ability to protect its own citizens, the environmental community and I presume the state of California, as well, will sue,” Dan Becker, director of California’s Safe Climate Campaign, told The Detroit News in March. “I think these standards will end up winning the day.” It should be noted California isn’t pushing for more rigid standards, however. “California has harmonized its standards with the EPA and NHTSA,” Welch said. “But under the Clean Air Act, California does have the right to keep its own standards, and that could create difficulties for some automakers when they roll out new models. Also, under Section 177 of the Clean Air Act, other states can follow California’s fuel economy standards.” Senator Markey agreed a pull-back on standards could be a problem, suggesting the auto companies don’t want 50 state standards. The other issue is automakers must think globally about their products. “The domestic manufacturers, as well as those in Germany and Japan, are selling around the world,” Lindsay said. “The days of putting out a specific vehicle for one market is a thing of the past. The investment is going to be more costly if you do it that way, so the automakers have to think about the whole world.” The technology may not be on track for 2025, but it is still moving forward. “It is safe to say the technology wasn’t available before,” Lindsay said. “But it is getting there, and there will be ways of meeting the regulations. Going backward on CO2 isn’t going to happen. One way or another the automakers are going to reach those standards.” S

Engine Oil: 5W-30 Capacity: 6.0 quarts (5.7 liters) Coolant: Motorcraft Orange ATF: Mercon LV The Lincoln Motor Company reintroduced its flagship Lincoln Continental, as an all-new model in 2017. The Continental offers a variety of advanced technologies designed to help keep drivers more alert and in control. An all-new Lincoln-exclusive 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine producing up to 400 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque is available with an all-wheel drive drivetrain. A 3.7L Ti-VCT V6 — with 305 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque — is standard, and a 2.7L twin turbo V6 engine — with 335 horsepower and 380 poundfeet of torque — is optional. The 3.7L Ti-VCT V6 engine features electronic multi-port gasoline injection fuel delivery, while the 2.7L and 3.0L twin turbo V6 engines are gasoline direct injection. Lincoln Drive Control provides the driver a choice of three settings — comfort, normal and sport — adapting steering and suspension setups to tailor ride and handling. Continuously controlled damping helps isolate Continental from road imperfections, while adaptive steering technology improves steering efficiency and effort. Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection uses radar and camera technology to scan the roadway ahead and, if a collision risk with a vehicle or pedestrian is detected, provides a warning to the driver. If the driver does not respond in time, the system can automatically apply up to full braking force. Pre-Collision Assist can help drivers avoid rear-end collisions with other vehicles at all speeds, while Pedestrian Detection can

help drivers avoid pedestrians at lower speeds. To take the stress out of parallel and perpendicular parking, Lincoln uses ultrasonic sensors on the front and rear of the Continental to help locate an appropriate parking space, then automatically steer the car in. The driver only has to operate the brake and gas pedals. A 360-degree camera system uses views from cameras mounted in the grille, decklid and 180-degree side mirrors, seamlessly stitching these snapshots together to create an image in the screen so drivers can see around the car, same as if a camera is overhead. Designed to provide a serene experience, the all-new Continental’s interior is crafted to be physically comforting, visually soothing and peacefully quiet. An interior highlight is the new Perfect Position Seats — inspired by private jets and high-end office furniture — which can be adjusted up to 30 ways. The patented design allows the seat to adjust to individual body shapes and weights for optimal stretch and comfort. Rear passengers also enjoy first-class travel amenities such as audio and climate control, adjustable sunshades and reclining, heated, cooled and massaging seats. The Continental features four trim levels: Premier, Select, Reserve and Black Label. Three Lincoln Black Label designer themes are available — Chalet, Thoroughbred and Rhapsody. The all-new Lincoln Continental carries a starting price of $44,560.

T h e Modde d Ca rs t h e Gre at House s f rom “Ga m e of T h ron e s” Wou l d Tota l ly Dri v e N The new season of “Game of Thrones” (GoT) is almost here. And though we can’t offer you any sneak previews or exclusives to reign in the eager anticipation, we can offer our fellow fans some GoT action. Here at Carspring, we’ve imagined what each of the houses in GoT would drive if they had the chance to emerge through a wormhole into our world. As you’ll soon see, all of the houses had plenty of money, and plenty of imagination! From House Frey’s monstrous 4x4 to House Lannister’s gold-plated BMW 3 Series, there are some serious beasts across the kingdoms.

N House Arryn’s Fast, Ferocious i8 Littlefinger is firmly in charge of House Arryn, with Robin not yet old enough. Though with Littlefinger’s personality, Robin might never get the chance to rule House Arryn. Petyr Baelish’s choice of vehicle is of little surprise then. This sleek, rapid BMW i8 has been modded to look and travel even faster on its all-electric power. Truly embodying the white falcon. And its strengthened body is a surefire way to avoid attacks — if they could catch this elusive character in the first place! Littlefinger’s ruthlessness and cunningness with his choice of car might just keep the man from nothing in power at House Arryn for a long time to come! 50 NOLN | www.noln.net

House Greyjoy’s Nautical DS5 The House of Greyjoy is divided, but both factions use the same car. Enter the highly modified DS5, used by both Euron, and Yara and Theon. The high-tech DS5 has been fitted with an aerodynamic, mean-looking body kit, and the front splitter with its garing teeth reflects the harsh, bleak life on the islands. The shark fin also adds a tough, nautical touch, allowing the Greyjoy DS5 to travel easily through water. A solid addition to the naval fleet for sure. We don’t know the outcome of the war yet, but one thing is certain, this modified DS5 won’t let either side down in the bleak reality of House Greyjoy. Who knows, maybe using the same car might bring the family back together?

House Frey’s Indestructible F-150 Raptor The death of Walder Frey and his two sons, and the uncertainty of the Lordship in House Frey after the Battle of the Bastards, calls for strength and might. Little wonder the car of choice is a highly modified Ford F-150 Raptor. The standard F-150 is already one of the toughest cars on the market, but House Frey has made it even stronger. Its impenetrable windshield, all-terrain chassis and armor plating make this F-150 ready to withhold any further attacks from Arya Stark between the two towers.

House Lannister’s Golden 3 Series House Lannister is the richest house in GoT, and boy do they like to show it. This BMW 3 Series used by House Lannister is a perfect example. With its garish body and huge oversized alloy wheels, it isn’t a car that screams modesty. But then, this is House Lannister, after all. Draped in gold leaf, fresh from the gold mines, it’s also a symbol of House Lannister’s industry. The rulers of the Westerlands won’t be short of speed either, with the 3.0 V6 engine lifted from the BMW M3 fitted, and aerodynamic styling, the de facto royal ride of choice is one of the most rapid of all the houses. In this world, just like ours, money can get you places, and quickly it seems.

House Stark’s 3008 Winter Edition The King in the North, Jon Snow, has just returned from the disastrous Second Battle of Winterfell, so some downsizing is in order. The Peugeot 3008 House Stark uses is a good reflection of the smaller family unit. This 3008 is no ordinary small family crossover though. The huge wheels, and spiked tires, are not only mean-looking, but they’re also ideally suited for roaming across the wintry lands. The armored plating on the body should also come in handy for when Brand Stark returns, too. After all, “Winter is coming…”

House Targaryen’s Ferocious X5 The former Great House of Westeros and ruler of the house of seven kingdoms may have been deposed during Robert’s Rebellion. But as it is sailing to Westeros to take back the seven kingdoms, it needs a car that is fierce, strong and dominant. The house of the three fire breathing dragons has a car that is a beast in all three respects. The BMW X5 is a dominant car in its earthly guise, but with its angular, modified body and its fire-breathing supercharged engine, House Targaryen’s X5 is utterly commanding. Whether they manage to retake all seven kingdoms is still a question yet to be answered. But with House Targaryen’s modded X5, they certainly have the equipment on hand.

House Tyrell’s Sensible Supermini The symbol of House Tyrell might be a rose, but as any GoT fan knows, there are thorns between the flowers. Likewise, House Tyrell’s Vauxhall Adam also has a sting in its tail. It might be a small hatch, but the modifications make it a match for the other houses. That House Tyrell has chosen such a sensible vehicle is indicative of the family cohesion in the House. But with a more powerful engine, a redesigned body and a sports exhaust sticking out of the rear bumper, all is not as it first appears. This Adam packs a punch — well-suited to the leaders of the lush vastness of the Reach. S

Facebook for Business Part 2 Organic and Paid Advertising Strategies for Reaching Customers and Growing Your Sales by Lauren Henderson

L

ast month, in Part 1 of our Facebook for Business mini-series, we discussed setting up your business Facebook Page. We also examined how to find your unique audience among the more than 60 million businesses utilizing Facebook Business already. This month, we will delve deeper into understanding organic and paid advertising strategies and walk you through setting up your own advertising campaigns. Before we can get started talking about how to set up a Facebook advertising campaign, we must understand what the options are and when to use them. Let’s start by talking about the differences between organic and paid Facebook advertising strategies. Even with a base level knowledge of social media, you probably know “likes” are a pretty big deal if you want to successfully play the social media game. The more people who “like” your page, the easier it will be to let your current and potential customers know about new services and specials you offer. This is called “organic reach” or the total number of unique followers who see your unpaid posts. Organic reach is important because it will help you find new customers more effectively without having to regularly target them via paid advertising strategies. However, due to Facebook’s algorithms on how things show up in and are pushed out to the newsfeed, you can’t solely rely on organic reach. Gone are the days of being able to post things to your page and expect all of your followers to see every post you make. According to Facebook Business, “Pages organically reach about 16 percent of their fans on average,” hence why you must have a balanced Facebook strategy that includes organic, boosted and paid campaigns. Now hang-tight with me here as we explore this next Facebook advertising strategy — boosted posts. Have you ever played Nintendo? If you’ve played Nintendo — or your kids or grandkids have — you’re probably familiar with the game Super Mario or Mario Kart. In the game of Mario Cart, as you race along the imaginary track, dodging banana peels and trying to catch up to your friends Luigi and Yoshi, you can run into different icons that will give your cart a little boost and help you whiz by your competition. Boosted posts on Facebook are no different than those icons. Boosted posts are a hybrid between organic and paid advertising strategies on Facebook. They are technically an organic strategy, but you do put money behind posts that are doing well out to push them out to more of your followers. This is why people often confuse them with paid advertising on Facebook. Boosted posts are best used when you’ve already let a post organically gain traction and people are

showing an interest in it. They are necessary to growing your page. You can also boost your page using these same tactics below, but today, we are going to specifically talk about how to boost a post, not a page. Here are the basics of boosting a post: 1. Visit your page. 2. Select the post you want to boost. Remember, it’s best to select one that has already been running organically for at least a few hours and is doing well. Facebook also has something called the “20 Percent Rule,” which is basically a rule put in place to protect the integrity of the content forced out into the newsfeed. Because of the 20 percent rule, Facebook will not allow you to boost a post that has an image with 20 percent or more text on it. (The less text that appears on your images, the better.) 3. Click the “Boost Post” icon in the bottom right-hand corner. 4. Select the audience you’d like to target. Facebook allows you to get pretty granular here. Among other things you can select an age range, gender, interests, people who like your page, friends of people who like your page, geographic regions etc. 5. Next, select your budget and the duration of your post. Facebook will give you an estimated reach depending on your selection. Don’t worry, once you set your budget you’re in control of how much you want to spend on a boosted post. The budget you select will be allocated across the number of days you decide to run your boosted post. The suggested budgets vary, so you can spend as little or as much as you’d like.

AWARENESS CAMPAIGN: These Facebook ads don’t have to click through anywhere they can strictly drive people to your Facebook Page. BOOSTED POSTS: kind of like the power-up icons in Mario Kart; you put money behind Facebook posts that are doing well out to push them out to more of your followers. CANVAS AD: A full-screen ad experience for bringing brands and products to life on mobile. CAROUSEL AD: Shows multiple images that ultimately click through to the same URL. CLICK-THRU CAMPAIGN: Directs users to click on a Facebook ad to get to a URL you want them to visit. FACEBOOK ADS MANAGER: A Facebook program where you can view, make changes to and measure the results for all of your Facebook campaigns, ad sets and ads. To get to Facebook ads manager, simply click the caret in the top righthand corner of your dashboard and click “Create Ads.” FACEBOOK BUSINESS PAGE: Your business’ presence/profile on Facebook — not where you post cat memes and thousands of your vacation photos. ORGANIC REACH: The total number of unique followers who see your unpaid Facebook posts. POST: A status update or message you’d like to share with the cyber-world. Can be text, images, videos or sometimes a combination of the three. THE 20 PERCENT RULE: A rule put into place to protect the integrity of the content that is forced out into people’s Facebook newsfeeds. Because of the 20 percent rule, Facebook will not allow users to boost a post that has an image with 20 percent or more text on it. URL: The address of a page on the Internet.

6. After you’ve confirmed your boosted post, Facebook has to review it to make sure it meets their guidelines. Once your post has been approved, you’ll get a notification letting you know it is running. 7. Later on in this series, we will talk about how to evaluate your boosted posts so you can optimize them in the future, but for now, sit back, relax and watch the likes and comments roll in. Now that we’ve talked organic strategies and how to implement them, let’s talk a little more about paid strategies. Simply put, any campaign you have to run through Facebook Ads Manager is part of a paid strategy. What’s Facebook Ads Manager? It’s a Facebook program where you can view, make changes and measure the results for all of your Facebook campaigns, ad sets and ads. To get to Facebook Ads Manager, simply click the caret in the top right-hand corner of your dashboard and click “Create Ads.” Once there, you can choose the type of campaign you want to run, depending on your advertising objective. If you want to drive local awareness, you will want to run an awareness campaign — these ads don’t have to click through to anywhere, so they can strictly drive people to your Facebook Page. Maybe you want to increase traffic to your website. In this case, you’d want to select that as the goal and run a click-thru campaign. If you want to drive store visits or engagement, you can customize the call-to-action button that will run with the ad to include “Call Now” or “Get Directions” and then have the ad auto-populate your store phone number. Using Ads Manager is as easy or complex as you choose to make it. The more comfortable you get with the program, the more you can experiment with all the things it does. Overwhelmed? Don’t worry, we’re going to get you started setting up your first ad set right now. How To Set Up Your First Ad Set in Ads Manager: 1. Go to Ads Manager. A link can be found at the bottom of the Promotions page under the Insights tab. 2. First, choose your desired objective from the list. 3. Then choose your campaign name or use the suggested name. 4. If you have multiple pages for multiple locations, select the page you want to create an ad set for. 5. Choose your target audience. 6. Decide where your ads will appear. If you have an Instagram account, you can select here if you want the ads to be shown on Instagram, Facebook or in the place where they are likely to perform best (probably Facebook). 7. Set your budget and ads schedule. 8. Name your ad set and select whether you want to run a carousel, single image, single video, slideshow or canvas ad. 9. Choose your images and ad text. There can be a lot of strategy to this, and it could be a whole other article. Basically, keep things concise, clear and remember the 20 percent rule — it still applies. 10. When you’re ready, place your ads.

Run a few practice ad sets at a small spend to get familiar with this process and ads manager. The more you do it, the easier it will become and the more creative you can get with things. You’ll start to learn what works and what doesn’t. Before you know it, you’ll be able to dive deeper into optimizing your creative and ad runs. You’re all set to hit the gas and grow your business. Facebook advertising is some of the least expensive, most effective and targeted advertising you can do, so get comfortable with it. The good news is, you can always delete or stop running a campaign or post at anytime for any reason. Use your customers’ noses always being in their phones to your advantage, and meet them where they already are. It’s not rocket science; it’s just logic. Next time, we’ll talk a little more about understanding the results of advertising campaigns like these and using those findings to frame how you talk to and engage with your fans. We’ll also discuss how to handle negative feedback and maybe throw in a Facebook only promotion idea or two. Stay tuned! S

Workers Compensation Insurance:

How to Cap Costly Premiums By Phillip Perry Every company wants happy and healthy employees. When workplace accidents occur, it’s critically important to help the injured people recover and return to their jobs as quickly as possible. Workers compensation insurance plays an essential role by paying for medical treatment and protecting employers from civil lawsuits. What’s good for employee health, though, can be bad for the bottom line. Experience too many workplace accidents, or fail to identify and deal adequately with fraud, and escalating premiums will take big chunks out of your profits. “Workers compensation costs, if not managed well, can put a company out of business,” warned Jeffrey Adelson, general counsel and managing partner of the National Practice Group, Adelson, Testan, Brundo, Novell & Jimenez in Santa Ana, California.

Capping Costs

When premiums get too high, it’s natural to consider dropping coverage altogether. Unfortunately, that’s not an option. “Employers who do not carry workers compensation insurance are breaking the law,” said James Moore, president of J&L Risk Management Consultants in Raleigh, North Carolina. “They are also flirting with bankruptcy, which may well be the only way out if they are hit with a big civil lawsuit. To go bare and hope something doesn’t happen is to chase fool’s gold.” The good news is employers have been taking steps to bring expenses under control. “Workplace safety has been improving and injuries have been declining in many states in recent years,” said Peter Burton, senior division executive for State Relations at the National Council on Compensation Insurance in Wayne, Pennsylvania. There’s also been a moderation in medical costs, thanks largely to the use of more economical outpatient treatment. The net result has been downward pressure on insurance bills. “The general trend in workers compensation premiums seems to be static or slightly lower,” said Randy Sieberg, president of Workers Compensation Consultants, based in Columbia, Missouri. 60 NOLN | www.noln.net

There’s one more reason for rate stabilization: workforce participation. “As the economy has picked up in the past few years, more people have entered the workforce,” said Daniel Free, president and general counsel of Insurance Audit & Inspection in Indianapolis, Indiana. “That creates a larger labor pool which has helped stabilize costs.”

Control Risk

Of course, conditions vary by state and employer. How can you control your own workers compensation bills? Nothing does a better job than improving safety. “You need to do whatever you can to reduce the number of accidents and injuries,” Burton said. The reason is that premiums go up most quickly for those employers who experience a high number of claims. That means a workplace full of people who get back injuries will drive costs up more than a single expensive car accident will. Accident rates affect an employer’s “experience modification,” which is the factor by which a business’s premium varies from the norm for its industry and state. “If you have fewer injuries than normal for your type of business, you will get a credit in the form of a lower modification applied to your premium,” Burton said. “If you experience a higher number of injuries than normal, your modification, and thus your premium, will be higher.” Watch for dangerous conditions wherever employees are operating machinery or driving vehicles. These activities are prime causes

NOL_56-82.indd 62

of accidents. Too, be vigilant about areas where people move from one level to another. “The risk of a slip and fall is high in such places, especially if people are carrying things like cartons of inventory,” Moore said. “Make sure the steps are well marked and well lit. And reduce the slipperiness of steps by using what is called ‘anti-slip’ or ‘sandpaper’ tape. That can really reduce the chance of accidents by adding roughness to the floor.” High shelves in the storeroom can pose special problems. Provide quality ladders for employees who need to retrieve items from upper shelves. Train workers to spot and reinforce cartons that look insecure. Here are some other safety tips: • Teach employees about safe lifting techniques and provide them with back braces. • Install sufficient lighting in all areas of the building. • Make sure the plumbing is working well so people do not slip on water. • Make sure employees take appropriate work breaks. While the above ideas will go a long way toward reducing costly accidents, the fact remains that every workplace is unique. Keep your own eyes open for unsafe conditions and practices. “Avoid the temptation to turn your head the other way when you see dangerous conditions,” Adelson said. “Take action to resolve them.” Finally, when an accident does happen look upon it as a learning experience. Determine its cause and institute procedures to obviate similar events.

The Workers Compensation Partnership

Workers compensation insurance is a two-way street: Employees are covered for medical expenses following an accident, and employers are protected against costly civil lawsuits. “Workers compensation is a nofault system, which means medical expenses are covered even if an accident is caused by employee error,” said Jeffrey Adelson, general counsel and managing partner of the National Practice Group, Adelson, Testan, Brundo, Novell & Jimenez in Santa Ana, California. “In some states, reimbursement might be denied if injuries are intentional or the result of intoxication or drug use. You need to check with your attorney on how your own state handles these issues.” While employers cannot generally be sued by injured workers, some states allow employees to sue for what is called “serious and willful misconduct.” That refers to employer behavior that goes beyond mere negligence, that is so wanton that the employer should have known an injury might occur. An example might be deliberately removing ergonomic improvements to equipment or furniture. Employers can also be sued for what the law calls “retaliatory discharge,” a term which refers to the termination or punishment of an employee who has filed a workers compensation claim. “You cannot discriminate against someone who files, or seeks to file, a workers compensation claim,” Adelson said. S

“Get together with your employees and talk about steps you can take to increase safety,” Sieberg said. “Write them down in a manual and have every one sign off on them. When you take steps like this your insurance carrier will see you as a more desirable risk.”

Reduce Fraud

Call your broker to report injuries as soon as they occur. Not only is it a crime to fail to report injuries, but delay often results in additional medical costs. “The longer a case stays open, the higher the medical expenses, which are the biggest driver of workers compensation costs,” Adelson said. “Reporting an injury right away will help your carrier in containing medical costs and will help get the injured employee back to work with the least delay.” Early reporting can also help increase the chances of uncovering fraud, because evidence

is easiest to gather immediately following an accident. If you do suspect fraud, start your investigation right away. “Investigate in a non-threatening and non-emotional manner,” Adelson said. He suggested starting with relevant questions such as these: Was a Friday afternoon accident not reported until Monday morning? If so, why? Did the accident occur in a part of the building where the person had no business being? If so, maybe they were not really performing their assigned duties. Do you have cameras in the workplace that might have recorded the accident? Did anyone witness the injury? Ask for assistance from your insurance company, suggested Adelson. “Most carriers have what are called special investigation units that can help assess fraud,” Adelson said. They can also provide you with handouts or posters that explain the seriousness of bogus claims. You can help reduce the incidence of fraud by treating people well. “Develop a fair, honest workplace culture,” Adelson said. “Unhappy and bitter people who don’t value their jobs are going to file claims and take them all the way. People who respect their employers and workplaces will want to get back to work quickly.”

Shop Smart

While a safe workplace is the best way to control workers compensation costs, you should also select the right insurance providers. “You want a broker who understands your business, who works with you on the front end to avoid injuries and who will advocate for you when you have an issue with your carrier,” Adelson said. Such as? “Suppose you believe a certain claim should be investigated for fraud, and your carrier balks at doing so,” Adelson said. “You run the risk of a fraudulent claim leading to a higher premium at renewal time unless your broker steps in and urges the carrier to investigate.”

Future Shock: Beware of These Cost Drivers

A number of factors may contribute to an increase in workers compensation premiums in the years ahead. One is the rising cost of health insurance, with its attendant change in employee cost participation. “An employee who has a $5,000 annual health care deductible might be more inclined to attribute an injury to workplace duties,” said Daniel Free, president and general counsel of Insurance Audit & Inspection in Indianapolis, Indiana. “As drug prices go up, insurance companies may try to recover their higher costs through premium hikes.” Another potential cost driver is the recent trend toward legalization of the medical and recreational use of marijuana. “Suppose your employee obtains a prescription for medical marijuana,” Free said. “Can you lawfully deny the drug’s use? Maybe so, if the employee is in a high-risk job, but maybe not if the individual works in a low-risk setting.” In such cases, there are bound to be questions as to whether injuries arise from workplace conditions or from cognitive impairment resulting from marijuana use. “That’s a puzzle piece that has yet to be figured out,” Free said. Finally, state regulators can make changes that impact premiums. Stay alert to what your own state has planned in the areas of proposed increases in benefit levels, additions to the list of compensable injuries or new entries to drug formularies. “State insurance commissioners have a lot of authority regarding regulations, fines and penalties,” Free said. “You can stay abreast of what is happening by monitoring the web site of your state department of insurance.” S

NOL_56-82.indd 64

6/6/17 1:26 PM

And speaking of carriers, don’t pick one solely on price. “Ask your broker to suggest a company that will give you sound advice about avoiding losses and minimizing risks,” Adelson said. “Ask if the carrier will perform ergonomic reviews and educate you on what to do when accidents or injuries occur. And find out if the carrier maintains fraud departments that can help you investigate questionable accidents.” You might first approach so-called multi-line carriers who also sell insurance in other categories such as property, general liability and automobile. However, many such companies have been exiting the workers compensation market because the low interest rate environment makes it hard for them to make up any losses with profits from other lines. That leaves single-line carriers who specialize in workers compensation. Beware though: Many of these have become more selective in their clientele, favoring only those employers who have a history of risk control and claims management. Shopping your coverage can be a smart way to cut costs, and your broker should be able to suggest additional channels. “Look into professional employment organizations,” Moore suggested. “Many of them are accustomed to handling smaller accounts with higher risks. They also provide other fee-based services, which often allow them to provide workers compensation insurance at a more economical price. Finally, they are often willing to take on employers that might be rejected by insurance carriers.” Employers who are turned down by insurance carriers are forced to use the state pools, where premiums may run up to 25 percent

higher than those in the private sector. Service may also be less than optimal. For example, there may be no one who will run an ergonomic review to help you reduce injuries.

Keep in Touch

No one wants to experience the pain and cost of an accident, but the experience can be mitigated by an understanding employer. “Once an accident occurs, stay in close contact with the injured worker,” Burton said. “Helping workers get back into employment as quickly as possible is an excellent way to help reduce expenses that may lead to premium hikes.” That’s because the employee who returns to work will be collecting less compensation from the carrier, not only for lost salary but also for medical expenses. Employees are likely to be enthusiastic about any program that gets them back to work early. That’s because they will be compensated at their normal salary rather than the at the partial level mandated by the workers compensation system. Bear in mind, too, that adjustors will suspend the workers compensation claims of those employees who refuse offered positions, even if those positions are for less demanding duties not normally performed. One final tip: Don’t take claims personally. “Understand every employer is going to face an occasional workers compensation claim,” Adelson said. “Good management is usually a matter of mitigating rather than avoiding losses.” S

More European Vehicle Owners Look for Alternatives to Dealership Oil Changes by Kyle Kress

Look for products that are fully approved by the European automotive manufacturers for use in vehicles in and out of warranty and provide exceptional protection.

The average age of a vehicle on U.S roads is eleven years, and European-manufactured vehicles are no exception. These vehicle owners are quite savvy and know their vehicles require “special oil.” Many owners look for high-quality lubricants that are approved by their car manufacturer, even if their vehicle is out of warranty. After many European auto manufacturers stopped offering free maintenance packages with the purchase of a new vehicle, more new-vehicle owners began seeking out alternatives to dealership oil changes. One challenge to servicing European vehicles is that European engines require different oil formulations than U.S and other

foreign vehicles. In Europe, most vehicles are diesel-powered, with gasoline-powered vehicles making up the minority of vehicles on the road. New regulations are being introduced in Europe tightening limits for CO2 emissions and instituting more strict fuel economy limits; European auto manufacturers’ oil specifications are evolving to help provide compliance with these new regulations. More and more, new European vehicles are requiring 5W-30 viscosity engine oil with a mid-to-low SAPS formulation. SAPS stands for Sulfated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulfur. This is a very common abbreviation used when discussing European engine oils. Additionally, many gasolinepowered European vehicles are Gasoline Direct Injected and/or Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injected powered. This adds additional challenges when formulating to protect these engines. Look for products that are fully approved by the European automotive manufacturers for use in vehicles in and out of warranty and provide exceptional protection. With the changing environment of European vehicles on the roads today, it’s the right time to ensure your lube shop has the right products for the European vehicles in your service bay. Is There Any Value in Using Oil Converters in Place of Specialty Oils? by Sean Porcher

A while back, I wrote about some ways operators save money by using oil converters. This was a hot topic at the most recent iFLEX show, as many operators asked about using converters in place of specialty oils or combined with them. For every advocate of converters, there is a naysayer. I am sure one could get into a pretty healthy debate with an oil company representative over the merits of using oil converters as opposed to their heavily researched, widely advertised and highly profitable specialty oils. But what is best for the oil company is not always best for the smaller operator. My goal here is to give more insight into

what oil converters actually are and ways myself, and others, have successfully implemented them into our operations based on some feedback I have received from my previous article. First, what exactly is an oil converter? Most oil converters contain a super-concentrated form of a proprietary additive package that essentially “boosts” the additive content of the oil. This is then added to some sort of carrier oil. Most oil converters I have seen treat between four and six quarts of oil, depending on the manufacturer. The important things to know as an operator are:

1. What is the base oil used? 2. What is the makeup of the additive package? 3. How many quarts will the product convert? So now that we know a bit about what the oil converter is, the next step is successfully implementing them into operations. Most operators I know have at least four different lines of oil with varying viscosities. This can lead to anywhere from 20-30 SKUs of motor oil. The goal with using converters is to reduce the amount of SKUs by one-third. An operator can essentially eliminate every viscosity of high-mileage oil by adding a high-mileage oil converter to their inventory. That reduces the carrying costs of additional SKUs and, in most cases, reduces the overall cost of goods sold. How much an operator can save, obviously, depends on the price differential of their conventional oil and their high mileage oil. Let’s say, for example, an operator pays $7.50 per gallon for conventional 5W-20 and $10.50 per gallon for high-mileage 5W-20. For a six-quart service that’s a difference of $5.50. Now, if the operator instead used a converter with

Make sure you represent the product correctly. For example, if you are using a high-mileage converter, you don’t offer a high-mileage oil; you offer a high-mileage package.

a cost of less than $3.00 along with that conventional oil, they’d save more than $1.50 per high mileage service. This translates to a savings of nearly $300 per store, per month based on 30 cars per day at 20 percent high-mileage. The same formula would hold true for a synthetic-blend or synthetic-blend high-mileage. Another area where converters can be used is for offering products you normally wouldn’t carry. For example, utilizing a synthetic high-mileage converter along with synthetic oil gives the operator a synthetic high-mileage product. This gives added flexibility in adding different levels of service to the menu. One word of caution, though, make sure you represent the product correctly. For example, if you are using a high-mileage converter, you don’t offer a high-mileage oil; you offer a high-mileage package. This helps ensure you are representing the oil by its proper brand and then adding a converter to complete the package. I will end quickly with a couple myth busters. Unfortunately, there is no oil converter that can change conventional oil into synthetic oil. There is also no converter that can convert standard oil into one of the “licensed” brands of oil. Many of us wish this was possible, as it would further reduce our inventory costs, cost of goods and headaches, but that’s our reality. The Sun is Shining; Let’s Make Hay by Dave Prange

Warning: This is not a happy and optimistic column. It features a report that spells doom for not only our industry, but for the automotive aftermarket and the entire automotive industry. This includes the oil and insurance industries, too. There is an overall silver lining, but we may be in a buggy whip business. More on that later. Choose wisely, your next new car could be the last one you buy. A major new report predicts by 2030, the overwhelming majority of consumers will no longer own a car. Instead, they will use on-demand electric autonomous vehicles. The executive summary can be found at: https://www. rethinkx.com/executive-summary By 2030, within 10 years of regulatory approval of autonomous electric vehicles (A-EVs), the report says, 95 percent of all US passenger-miles traveled will be served by on-demand, autonomous, electric vehicles that will be owned by fleets rather than individuals. The-end-is-near fears about electric vs. carbon fuel powered vehicles have ebbed and flowed over the last couple of decades. First driven by fears of oil shortages, then came the global warming (think shale), save-the-planet argument that picked up steam. The whole “green” movement is mostly a wash out, as consumers always vote with their wallets. Consumers will only choose to go green when costs are all equal. The report by RethinkX, an independent think tank that focuses on technology-driv-

en disruption and its implications across society, said this stunning and radical progression will be driven entirely by economics and will overcome the current desire for individual car ownership. It is said that this will begin first in the big cities and then spread to the suburbs and regional areas. It has already started — think Uber and Lyft. The report calls these Transport-asa-Service (TaaS). I tried them first to save money, but then I loved the convenience. I often choose this option versus renting a car in certain markets, and those markets are becoming smaller and smaller. As driv-

ers, we have the ability to choose convenience and save time. Where have we heard that before? Every day you can read about driverless vehicle testing by tech giants — Amazon, Uber, Google and others are spending massive dollars refining the technology. The articles usually feature the accidents and have a tone of humor on this crazy new idea. They must sound like the old days when people laughed at smelly, loud and dirty horseless carriages. This disruption will have enormous implications across the transportation and oil industries, decimating entire portions of their value chains, causing oil demand and prices to plummet and destroying trillions of dollars in investor value, not to mention the value of used cars. At the same time, it will create trillions of dollars in new business opportunities, consumer surplus and GDP growth. Co-author, Tony Seba, does not say that individual car ownership will completely

disappear. By 2030, 40 percent of cars will still be privately owned, but they will only account for 5 percent of miles traveled. Autonomous cars will be used 10 times more than internal combustion vehicles were. They will last longer — maybe one million miles — and the savings will inject an additional one trillion dollars into the pockets of Americans by 2030. Why is this? Because everything will be cheaper. Maintenance costs will be significantly lower thanks to 20 moving parts in the powertrain, compared to 2,000 for petrol cars. Battery technology will improve. The cost of maintenance will be one-fifth the cost of current cars, the cost of finance one-tenth and the cost of insurance will be one-tenth. “The survival of car manufacturers will depend on building cars with long lifetimes and low operating costs. This means they will optimize for minimum waste of resources in building and operating vehicles, including designing vehicle platforms with parts that are interchangeable and recyclable.” The report outlines the huge benefits from this transformation. Unclogging city roads, removing the pollution that is choking major cities, savings millions of lives from accidents and trillions of dollars in health impacts and freeing up parking space. We often forget about the health impacts of fuel cars. In 2015, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, outdoor air pollution led to 1.7 trillion dollars in annual economic costs from premature deaths. According to the World Health Organization, 1.25 million people died from road traffic accidents around the world in that year, and another 50 million were severely injured. “Autonomous vehicles will be safer than human drivers, leading to a decrease in road traffic accidents,” the report said. Although, to be sure, any such accidents caused by faulty software rather than humans will create huge controversy. The nature of the vehicles may also change — ranging from two-person to four-person, eight-person and larger vehicles in heavily populated areas.

riage trade involved three parts. The original equipment carriage manufacturers finally vanished with Studebaker’s demise in the 1960s. The parts business moved relatively smoothly into servicing the auto industry — Timken is still going strong since 1852. The accessories suppliers (the buggy whip guys) vanished. But did they ever exist? Most were made by shoemakers, and you can still buy them today. Survival comes from understanding and redefining the business you’re in. The unintended repercussions of technological shifts continue to provide opportunity. Think gasoline direct injection and oil consuming engines. The sun is shining; look for the hay. Add new services to keep up. Consumers love convenience. S

It will also have an impact on geopolitics, because world will no longer be dependent on oil reserves for the bulk of its transportation needs. The “politics of lithium,” meanwhile, are completely different from the politics of oil. Lithium is plentiful, although it needs planning to ensure that the mines are in place to extract it, and its demand can be reduced by recycling. Seba recognized most people assume the biggest impediments to this scenario are behavioral issues such as love of driving, fear of new technology or just habit. I might add the freedom to move as we want. The cost savings, the speed, the increased safety and the extra free time will be key factors. Seba explained that “pre-TaaS” companies such as Uber and Lyft have also invested billions of dollars developing technologies and services to overcome these issues. In 2016, these companies drove 500,000 passengers per day in New York City alone. So what does this mean for us? Let’s look back at the buggy whip metaphor. The car-

The Training Never Stops

Counting Your Profits in Other Ways by Ragan Holt

Years ago, while creating a work schedule for the following two weeks, I had the challenge of scheduling around all the staff’s personal issues. One employee had to pick up his kids after school, another had a doctor’s appointment and another was the best man in his brother’s wedding. That was just the beginning. I had 12 employees, and all but one had some kind of conflict during the next two weeks that would somehow prevent them from working the shifts I needed them to for the shop to run at its full capacity. I came to realize I had somehow filled the shop with the biggest set of misfits and ne’er-do-wells that had ever been assembled in one shop. I had to do something to inspire the staff and make them realize coming to work was a privilege and an honor. After all, in most parts of the world, people would love to have our kind of steady work. Our work is honorable and a service to our communities, so why is hiring and keeping good, qualified employees such an issue? Why is it that we cannot have a reliable workforce? Is this epidemic only in our industry? In my frustration, I started making a list. I had employees’ names on one side, and three columns next to their names of pros, cons and comments. As I started down the pros column, it wasn’t that bad. The whole crew had exceeded the

minimum requirements for employment — a high school education, a valid driver’s license and meeting the state’s requirements by qualifying to perform safety inspections. Most of the crew had passed our company’s training program. The majority of the crew was cross-trained and had the ability to perform multiple positions within the shop. The most recently hired members were on track with their training and, in several cases, were ahead of schedule. Our car counts were good, and ticket averages were within an acceptable range. On the surface, all seemed OK. The list of cons was a pretty normal list of undesirable traits, like poor work history or no experience. A few had unprofessional tattoos I could have done without. One or two of them had sketchy transportation back and forth to work, and so on. So, what was the problem? On paper, this was a normal group of people; however, in reality, they were unreliable and inconsistent with daily operations. What got my attention, though, were the notes in the comments column. This crew of misfits had some issues that were beyond my scope of responsibility as a shop manager, but if I wanted to solve the inconsistency problems, it meant that these other, more personal issues needed to be addressed. I am not a counselor, so many of these

issues were way above my pay grade. These problematic issues were none of my business, and my first reaction was to bury my head in the sand and hope they would go away. Where would I start? How had their personal problems become my shop performance problem? I was in way over my head, but it still felt like something needed to be done. All was fine for now, but there was no hope the shop would or could improve above its current status. I really didn’t know where to start, so instead, I tried to quietly look for teachable moments to encourage the people I worked with. I was fortunate to have good examples of successful business people around me who had Christian morals and standards I admired. I also had several mentors I could lean on for advice. I started by asking for their advice. Most agreed the best approach was a one-on-one approach. Prior to all of this happening, during some formative years of college and shortly thereafter, I was lucky enough to go through some self-training from folks like Zig Ziglar, Dennis Waitley and others like them who had a message that resonated with me about the value of effective leadership. One lesson from Zig Ziglar was, “Give others what they need first, and you will get what you want in return.” In other words, my crew had a slew of personal problems that needed to be addressed first, and if Zig was right, if they got what they needed, then I would get what I wanted — a reliable workforce. It seemed overwhelming at the time, but with all the courage I could muster up, a new plan of personnel development was hatched. I started with some Dennis Waitley material, mostly the “seeds of greatness” lessons from Waitley’s book with the same title. Admittedly, I had selfish goals: I wanted a crew who would show up for work on-time,

trained and ready for that day’s events. What happened was much better than that. As it turns out, a small investment in people will result in a huge return of loyalty, eagerness to improve and a willingness to go over and beyond in their efforts. It was during this time we coined the phrase, “Count your profits in other ways besides money.” With good advice in my mind and good material in my hand, I would look for opportunities to encourage the crew around me. Slowly, the plan started to work, and when the opportunities presented themselves, I would nudge folks toward healthy choices that could make their lives better. Over time, it got easier, but the best part was when workmates started sharing possible solutions to their issues with each other. Over time, not only did the scheduling become easier, but friendships developed. As time has gone by, new methods of training have made their way into our lives. In our world of digital media, one can receive motivation from a host of trainers and speakers. One that has been on the top of my list for a year now is author and former Navy Commander David Marquet’s “Turn This Ship Around.” The book should

be a must-read; however, his weekly email reminders are also good advice for effective leadership. There are also several self-development podcasts that are available. One of my new favorites that Tammy Neal, editor of NOLN, put me onto is the series from Mike Rowe called “The Way I Heard It.” (For us old-timers, they are short inspirational stories that have a feel similar to Paul Harvey’s “The Rest of the Story.”) People are funny creatures in that when we hear inspirational stories, we are also motivated to inspire. According to Travis Cargile, Sales and Advertising for NOLN, another effective training tool is a YouTube video from Jocko Willink titled, “How to Deal with Failure.” Willink, a former Navy Seal, travels the globe offering sound advice to world leaders and leaders of large corporations. Of course, there are still the traditional methods of self-training with a whole host of books on the market. As we know, the training never stops. We will always need to train and develop the crews around us. Even in the unlikely event that everyone was trained to work on today’s vehicles, soon the OEMs will change the design or engineer something new that will need to be maintained. Ef-

“Give others what they need first, and you will get what you want in return.” - Zig Ziglar

fective methods for training still include role playing, practicing on our vehicles or reading from word tracts until the employee has the confidence needed to make good presentations. Attending conferences and requiring our crews to meet certifications are more important today than they have ever been. The training will never stop, but how we train will always change. If you want the training to be meaningful, we must train our crews in a way that makes sense to them. However, sometimes before the technical training can be effective, training on a personal level may be required. The rewards for having a personal development program will exceed your financial goals. As the saying goes, “Happy employees create happy customers.” S RAGAN HOLT is the quick lube advisor for National Oil & Lube News. The Installed Marketer

Guarantees with a Meaning: Boldly Go Where Few Have Gone Before by John Hickey

Someone said, “Science offers no guarantees because it’s the exploration of the unknown.” The “unknown” may, indeed, be a part of scientific research and exploration, but it is not a welcome factor in the world of automotive service guarantees. Unlike Captain Kirk and the crew of the starship Enterprise, when it comes to automotive service, customers do not want to experience, “A mission to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new adventures or to boldly go where no man has gone before.” In this column, we’ll discuss the reasons why having guarantees, which actually mean what they say, will set your fast lube operation apart.

Marketing and Guarantees If there were just two fast lube service providers to choose from and one offers a “100-percent service satisfaction or your money back guarantee,” and the other offers a wordy statement in legalese, which says something like, “We guarantee our service but are not responsible for, and expressly disclaim all liability for, damages for or arising out of use, reference to or reliance on any information contained in products manufactured by a third party…”, which of the two service providers would you choose? Chances are you are no different than any other person who has the capability of reason. You would choose the “100 percent no questions asked satisfaction” guarantee. From a marketing perspective, that guarantee performs two important functions; it gets the customer’s attention and provides them with peace of mind. Consider the guarantee offered by LL Bean: “Our guarantee is a handshake — a promise that we’ll be fair to each other. So if something’s not working or fitting or standing up to its task or lasting as long as you think it should, we’ll take it back. We want to make sure we keep our guarantee the way it’s always been for over a century.” Now, more importantly, consider the fact that LL Bean actually lives up to every word of that guarantee. That guarantee, and the fact they live by it, has provided a lot of positive attention for LL Bean’s products, and it’s obviously inspired a lot of confidence, which is borne out by the simple fact that they’ve been around for “over a century.” The entire fast lube industry has only been in existence for approximately 42 years. Of the thousands of fast lube busi-

nesses across the industry, if there are any who offer a “100-percent service guarantee…” and then actually stand by that promise in the same way LL Bean does, they will be the ones left standing at the century mark, regardless of what evolutions the industry may experience over the next 50-some years. What Does Your Guarantee Actually Mean? To offer a “100-percent service satisfaction” guarantee is pretty simple, and that’s why a lot of companies do it. But what does the guarantee actually mean? To examine the meaning of your fast lube’s guarantee, I suggest you try a little test. Simply ask any of your service staff to explain to you what your “100-percent service satisfaction” guarantee actually means. They may offer something like; “We’ll give the customer a discount,” or “We’ll refund the cost of their service,” or “We’ll give them a coupon for a future service.”

CciJim@aol.com

NOL_56-82.indd 74

6/8/17 3:03 PM

But I’m betting in many cases fast lube employees have no idea what the “satisfaction guaranteed” offer actually means if something goes wrong. Even more to the point, do you as the owner/operator actually know what your guarantee means and what the customer is entitled to receive? If you and your employees can’t easily answer that question, do you think your customers can? So what happens if something does go wrong? For example, does the customer get reimbursed for the inconvenience and cost to them for having to come in to have a problem resolved? Even a 100-percent money back guarantee usually doesn’t reimburse customers anything for their inconvenience. The more you are prepared to offer your customer in response to a service failure, the more meaningful and impactful it becomes when customers are deciding who should service their vehicles. Whatever the offer is, it should be spelled out and mean what it says so the owner, the service staff and the customer know what to expect. What Do Weak Guarantees Communicate? When a customer is deciding who will service their second most costly investment, usually their vehicle, what message is communicated by a weak guarantee? To answer that question, consider the recent reports of airline staff versus customer encounters. How would you feel about a service guarantee which states, “We’ll guarantee the reserved seat that you paid a premium for unless of course we happen to overbook the flight and need to remove you from the aircraft.” In much less direct language, that is actually what’s written in the small print of most airlines’ ticket purchase agreements. So what does such a guarantee communicate? Obviously, it communicates a num-

ber of messages, all of which are negative. It communicates a lack of confidence in the airline’s own system of reserving seats. It sends the message to customers that they have no real guarantee of any kind, and booking a seat on the airline is pretty much a gamble. It tells the employees of the airline that the needs of the airline come first and that paying customers may be dealt with as necessary to meet those needs. Make no mistake; weak service guarantees communicate the same messages about fast lube service providers. If you offer guarantees that are ambiguous and don’t clearly spell out meaningful remedies in the event that something goes wrong, why should your customers think any differently about your business? If your service invoice contains small print with wordy, noncommittal “airline” language, you’re pretty much stating, “We don’t have a lot of confidence in our system or in the staff who will be servicing your car.” That’s an awful message to your customers and to your employees! Boldly Go Where Few Have Gone Before It’s pretty simple for most customers; they just want you to say what you mean and mean what you say. If you listen carefully, maybe you can hear the opening strains of the Star Trek theme music. As you listen, take out a pad and pen, write down what you expect as a customer and then ask yourself, “Should my customers feel any differently than I do?” When you’ve answered that question, be bold enough to write out a service guarantee that has real meaning. A guarantee that says, “We trust our employees because they’re well trained and will perform their job with precision.” A guarantee that says, “Sometimes the unforeseen happens. If it happens as a result of our service, we’ll make it right at our ex-

pense. In addition, we’ll work with you to arrive at fair compensation for your inconvenience because of our mistake.” Maybe it’s just me, but that’s a guarantee with meaning. It’s a guarantee that would get my attention, determine my choice of service providers, increase my confidence and loyalty and is, without question, boldly going where few businesses have ever gone before! I’d like to hear your thoughts on service guarantees. S JOHN HICKEY is the Channel Marketing Manager for Castrol brands. He can be reached at: john.hickey@bp.com

The drain includes internal baffles and a two-inch lip to reduce splashing. Its removable metal screen keeps out parts and debris. The drain’s three-wheel design provides maneuverability on uneven shop floors, and its extended T-handle offers convenient movement. In addition, the Model 8597 has two female three-quarterinch NPT drain ports — one for evacuation by gravity and one for evacuation by external pump. Bolt On’s Inbound Photo Texting feature allows customers to send vehicle photos to shops so they can see and clarify their vehicle concerns and make decisions on how to proceed. This is a free update that is available to all current Message Manager users. In addition, Bolt On has created more options for shop owners when texting their customers. Mobile Manager Pro users now have the ability to text customers vehicle photos without an inspection report. Shops can simply take a picture, add text and draw on the photo, then send the photo directly to the vehicle owner. This update is currently only available for Mitchell 1 Manager SE and Snap-On ShopKey SE users. Another highly anticipated update available to Mobile Manager Pro users, is the shop’s ability to send service estimates to customers via text. This feature allows shops to get immediate authorizations on services with just a few taps of their fingers. This is the first wave of highly-anticipated features added to the Bolt On software on behalf of customer requests. One Million Miles

By Kelsey Carlson

and Counting

Providing quality service, consistently, goes a long way, which has been proven by one of Lube n’ Go’s valued customers, Robert Vigil, whose 1999 Chevrolet 2500 cargo van recently exceeded one million miles. Vigil owns a delivery service based out of El Paso, Texas, and travels far and wide to make deliveries. The majority of his travels take him through west Texas and southern New Mexico, but that hasn’t stopped him from traveling as far as Denver and Los Angeles. “It’s rare you can get them to last this long,” Vigil said. Vigil is the original owner of the nearly 20-year-old van he purchased in 1998 from Rudolph Chevrolet in El Paso, Texas. It’s clear Vigil firmly believes in the importance of regular automotive maintenance. The employees at Lube n’ Go in El Paso, Texas, have really developed a great relationship with Vigil throughout the years, and they know to expect him like clockwork. “Mr. Vigil has been a loyal Lube n’ Go customer for

years,” said Ray Rojas, Facility Manager at the Lee Trevino location of Lube n’ Go. “He cares greatly about his vehicle, as he drives many miles daily. He is very timely and thorough with his maintenance and completes all services due. We see him often, and he is very friendly with the entire staff. We are lucky to have a personal relationship with him, and we look forward to continuing to service his van for many more miles and years to come.” Upon the release of an article in the local newspaper regarding the mileage on his van, Vigil wrote a kind note to the Lube n’ Go staff thanking them for their hard work over the years. He then attached the story from the newspaper, had it laminated and took it up to one of the shop locations. “To the Lube n’ Go crew, many thanks… thanks a million for your attention and expertise you have given my van throughout the 18-plus years I have been going to your shops. I have never gone anywhere else! You helped to make it happen,” Vigil wrote. One million miles is not an easily reached milestone, but regular maintenance and proper oil changes are obviously the way to make sure vehicles last as long as they can. Lube n’ Go is certainly doing something right. Vigil trusts the experts at Lube n’ go and even offers a bit of advice to fellow drivers. “Try to fix something that needs to be fixed right away,” Vigil said. Creating a lasting relationship with customers is crucial in the quick lube business. Not only does it help increase customer count through referrals, but it strengthens the trust factor that the industry has struggled with for so long. Not every customer is going to be like Vigil, however, creating an environment where you can recognize repeat customers by name and put in the extra effort to make them feel comfortable will have them coming back for decades. Not only will Vigil continue to go to Lube n’ Go for service work, “I’ll still be driving it until it refuses to go,” he said. S
