SALONIT ANHOVO

Successful operation of the cement plant in the first half year

Salonit Anhovo among the best plants in Slovenia

taught us how to successfully overcome critical times. The latter proved to be indispensable in the time of the epidemic. With a series of measures to ensure health and safety at work, we managed to continue production and thus ensure the supply of all our customers with cement.

SALONIT ANHOVO

In the interim period, unfortunately, there was a temporary decrease in demand on the Slovenian market, a complete closure on the Italian market and the filling of our own stocks, so on 20th April, we suspended line to produce cement clinker. During the 14-day break, we performed minor maintenance work, while the shipment of cement took place in accordance with the needs of customers at all times.

Salonit Anhovo, which ranks among the most modern European cement plants, ended the 2019 business year with excellent business results, and the trend continues in 2020. In the first quarter of this year, we accomplished a record dispatch. We are proud to say that, despite the Covid-19 epidemic, the sales in cement and clinker in the first half of the year was even slightly higher than in the same period last year. This proves the strategic justification of renting the former cement plant in Trieste, which brings an important contribution to export growth.

Throughout the epidemic, we have successfully supplied customers with cement Next year, the cement plant will celebrate its 100th anniversary. In all our years of operation, we have gone through quite a few trials, which, among others, have

With strict measures to contain the spread of Covid-19, the production of cement clinker revived on 4th May. Even though the business trend is generally positive, the uncertainty of future economic development is high. We regularly monitor for a positive, realistic and pessimistic scenario, which we coordinate weekly.

Optimistic about the future Despite the forecast of GDP contraction and all possible problems that arise in the economy and other industries as a result of the epidemic and the uncertainty brought by the forecast of a possible second wave of the epidemic, Salonit Anhovo expects that cement sales in the domestic market will be stable and do well in the future. The borders in economic cooperation are open, and the state has adopted a package of measures and laws that should enable the accelerated launch of important investments in the Republic of Slovenia in the shortest possible time after the epidemic. It is precisely the investments in construction that have the greatest positive effect on the recovery of gross domestic product and support many indirect jobs.

The selection of factory of the year has been organised by the Finance newspaper since 2018 together with a professional partner, the company KMPG. In 2019, Salonit Anhovo entered the process of selection and in-depth assessment. The aim of the Factory of the Year project is to present good practices in Slovenian factories in terms of digitalisation of production and operation, technological advancement, production performance, energy performance and taking care of the environment, taking care of employees and achieving long-term sustainability and profitability.

assessment process represents one of the important affirmations that we are conducting our work in a good and responsible manner. We are especially proud of the results in the final report.

Invitation for successful production companies Invitation for participation in the selection of Factory of the Year 2019 was open for all successful production companies in Slovenia. A special invitation was sent to almost 150 successful production companies showing results, which stand out in terms of added value per employee, achieved EBIDTA, EBIT margin, low debt, etc. Salonit Anhovo was among them.

Evaluators place us among the 6 best in Slovenia We started by filling in a comprehensive questionnaire containing a range of information. Based on the assessment of the questionnaire, KPMG included us among 6 semi-finalists. Semi-finalists were visited by the professional evaluators on-site, in order to see the production, perform talks and supplement the evaluation. Our team reassured the experts from KPMG by presenting technological solutions, good production practices and environmental and social responsibility. Henkel Maribor, Ljubljanske mlekarne and Revoz made it to the final selection. At the final event in Krka, the factory of the year 2018, professional evaluators were most convinced by the company Ljubljanske mlekarne, which has received the Factory of the Year 2019 title.

What did the assessments of Salonit Anhovo show? In the process of preparation for the competition we systematically checked and documented everything in relation to automation and industry 4.0. In the field of operations, environment and social responsibility we have had such systematisation for years, which was reflected in the assessment. For our team, the

Comparison with competition participants Based on the analysis of data from the questionnaire, factory visit and talks, Salonit Anhovo has achieved similar final score compared to other participants in 2018 and 2019, however, it needs to be taken into account that the competition has been entered into by companies, which are technologically more advanced.

Internal comparison of thematic areas When comparing the three thematic areas of the competition, Salonit Anhovo achieved the highest level of maturity in the area of taking care of sustainable development (environment). The second-best evaluated area was taking care of employees, and the third, technological advancement of production. Salonit Anhovo at the virtual career fair

In Salonit Anhovo, we traditionally attend the career fair in Nova Gorica every year. We present there employment opportunities in the Salonit Group and job vacancies to job seekers. As the fair is also visited by many young people who are still involved in the educational process, we also present the possibilities of obtaining staff scholarships. A preparation for this year’s career fair in Nova Gorica, which was scheduled for March, began in January, but was cancelled just before implementation due to the epidemic. The organizer of the fair Mojedelo. com responded perfectly to the situation and on June 24 premiered the online career fair, which virtually connected the Gorizia, Coastal-Karst and Inner Carniola– Karst regions. The virtual environment offered visitors meetings with almost 30 employers, the opportunity to participate in workshops and lectures, and a round table on the situation in the region after the corona virus crisis. More than 28 renowned companies operating in the region presented themselves at the career fair. Among them, in addition to Salonit Anhovo, were Luka Koper, Atlantic Grupa, Gen-i, Hofer, JYSK, Biovis and Mlinotest. At the fair, we premiered a new promotional film entitled Cement your path to a successful career, which is also available on our website https://www.salonit.si/aktualno/video/ Visitors were able to connect directly with employers, conduct an individual audio-video interview and exchange contacts. At a round table on the economic pulse in the region before and after the Covid-19 epidemic, NAŠ LIST | International Edition | September 2020

the representatives of the Employment Service and the economy provided plenty of optimistic information and unanimously called job seekers to be very proactive in finding employment and ready to expand their competencies and personal horizons. In addition to talking to our HR officer, we also offered the visitors of our stand the opportunity to talk to our experts in the field of development, production and maintenance. In the Salonit Group, we are in the process of changing generations. When retirements occur, employment opportunities arise for candidates who would like to build their career in one of the most modern European cement plants – both in terms of environmental criteria and in terms of efficiency..

At Salonit Anhovo we will continue to offer employment opportunities, therefore, we invite interested candidates to regularly monitor the tenders on our website https://www.salonit.si/o-druzbi/kariera/.

Salonit Anhovo cements in the Port of Trieste Jožef Kralj, Salonit Anhovo The plans of expansion of the Port of Trieste’s activities in the bay of Trieste were conceived as far back as 2004. Implementation of the Logistic Platform project became the first part of the Port of Trieste expansion project comprising several phases. We managed to beat strong competition and secured first cement deliveries (approximately 15–7,000 tonnes) for finishing works in the Port of Trieste. The project is of national importance and it runs within carefully monitored port area, therefore it was necessary to fulfil

administrative conditions (declarations, certificates, licenses from the managing authority in Trieste, etc.) in order to be able to provide deliveries. The start of such cooperation means a lot of responsibility. All processes within the preparation of concrete mixtures are scrutinised by external monitoring institutions, and unsuitable deliveries trigger fines and high costs. Currently, the first part of the project is in its final stage. We will make sure to provide, by means of suitable conditions and quality, a competitive offer in the future as well.

Cement plant lease in Trieste Editorial Board

In April 2019, Salonit Anhovo, a company of Wietersdorfer Alpacem Group, signed with the company Italcementi S.p.A. an agreement on a three-year lease of a cement plant in Trieste. The location in Trieste, was producing some 100,000 tonnes

of cement annually, these quantities will significantly strengthening the group’s presence in the region. High quality cement of Salonit Anhovo will be mainly supplied to customers in Italy and Croatian Istria. NAŠ LIST | International Edition | September 2020

Restoration of the old cement plant Rok Mozetič, Salonit Anhovo We have completed restoration of facilities in the old clinker hall. As well we were successful with the removal of facilities in the main part of the old complex: a chimney, homogenisation facility with silos, electro

filter and smoke chamber, furnace base, water tower and two auxiliary buildings with their technological equipment. This includes a rotating furnace with filters, an older furnace and all auxiliary equipment.

Electric bicycles on the production site Marjana Šuligoj, Salonit Anhovo The cement production process covers two kilometres from the quarry to dispatch. To facilitate the work and overcome the distance faster, we purchased two electric bicycles for employees in production. Employees make an average of about five kilometres per shift on a bicycle, and electric bicycles allow them to cover this distance faster and with less effort. The baskets mounted on the bike are intended for the transport of tools and samples. The electric bicycles have been well received, and employees enjoy using them. We wish for the electric cycling fleet to expand in the future. NAŠ LIST | International Edition | September 2020

DEVELOPMENT AND INVESTMENTS

DEVELOPMENT AND INVESTMENTS

Slovenian Partnership for the Circular Economy Andrej Ipavec, PhD, Salonit Anhovo Salonit Anhovo is constantly actively looking for solutions for more sustainable production and is among the most active innovators in the building materials industry. We are looking for sustainable solutions in raw material use and fuels. Cement has one of the lowest environmental footprints among building materials, but we use a lot of it, so we must constantly strive to reduce our impact on the environment. Today’s contribution of the global cement industry to anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions is estimated at 5 to 8 percent.

The best technologies and constant development

In the RIS - Alice international project, we are currently examining the possibilities of using various alternative raw materials in the production of an innovative clinker called BCSA clinker. A successful solution would contribute to a larger circular economy, and it could also achieve a reduction in the carbon footprint of cement. We exchange knowledge and experience in cooperation with 15 partners from Slovenia, Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, France, Austria and Hungary. In the development of alternative solutions that could be used in practice, we are especially actively cooperating with the Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute (ZAG), which is the leading partner of the Project, and with the Slovenian Steel Group (SIJ) Acroni. The RIS - Alice (Regional Innovation Scheme) Project is funded by EIT RawMaterials and Horizon 2020 and will run until 2022.

We see the possibility of a further breakthrough in the decarbonisation of the cement industry mainly in the development of new technologies for capturing carbon dioxide and in the development of alternative types of cement based on a different type of clinker. Several alternative types of cement have been known in scientific circles for a long time, the most promising of which are alkali-activated cement (socalled geopolymers), belite cement, cement based on carbonate calcium silicates, magnesium oxide cement derived from magnesium silicates, and belite-calcium sulfoaluminate cement (BCSA).

Effective approaches with which Salonit Anhovo has been reducing carbon dioxide emissions for many years are mainly the replacement of fossil fuels with alternative ones, the partial replacement of clinker in cement with various mineral additives and the optimisation of the energy efficiency of the technological process.

The leading role of concrete and many excellent properties We cannot imagine life as we know today without concrete. Concrete, which is prepared using cement, is the most widely used building material and the second most useful substance after water. The reasons for the leading role of concrete are low price, high availability of raw materials for its production and good mechanical resistance. It is also distinguished by high resistance to water, fire and air, ease of use and the possibility of unlimited design at the end point of use. The key component of most types of cement used today is the so-called Portland clinker. It is produced in rotary kilns at high temperatures by firing a ground raw material mixture, which usually comprises limestone and clay components.

NAĹ LIST | International Edition | September 2020

used in grinding. Also, the optimal firing temperature of BCSA clinker is lower than the firing temperature of Portland clinker, which ranks it among the low-energy types of cement. The carbon footprint of BCSA cement is thus 20 to 30 percent lower than that of Portland clinker cement, mainly due to the lower limestone content in the raw material mix. Before this type of cement can be used on the market, some additional limitations need to be addressed through research. The key challenge remains the provision of suitable raw materials, and improvements are also necessary for managing the setting time of cement and compatibility with chemical additives in concrete.

The register will represent a link between the holders and producers of various raw materials (steelworks, mines, aluminium industry, thermal power plants) and potential end-users (especially the cement industry). In the next steps, we will focus on exploring the possibilities of using alternative raw materials in the cement industry.

The future is in the circular economy

We could produce BCSA cement on the lines where conventional Portland clinker is produced today. The main property advantages of this alternative type of cement are the relatively rapid development of mechanical strength and less shrinkage, which reduces the tendency to form cracks in concrete. An additional advantage of BCSA clinker is that it is softer compared to Portland clinker, which means that less electricity is

In cooperation with ZAG and SIJ and other partners of the RIS-Alice Project, we are carrying out availability checks for various alternative raw materials from the steel industry and industrial landfills in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. By using secondary raw materials, the production of BCSA clinker would be more environmentally friendly, contributing to the transition to a more efficient and sustainable society. As part of the Project, we will create a user-friendly and easily upgradeable register of alternative raw materials. NAĹ LIST | International Edition | September 2020

Maintenance upgrade in Salonit Anhovo

How does the reengineering process take place? The process of reengineering and upgrading of the maintenance is led and carried out by employees at Salonit Anhovo in cooperation with external contractors. We prepared the project and coordinated it within the Group. We started the reengineering process, which is classified as an internal development project, in May of this year.

Mitja Domenis, Tomaž Vuk, PhD, Salonit Anhovo

We have divided the reengineering process into several work stages, which we will gradually implement over the next two years. We will progressively include all employees, for whom we will also organise a series of trainings. Direct managers will play a very important role in introducing changes and managing daily activities, as the project will unquestionably require the involvement of all employees. Undoubtedly, computer support will also help us with this, making it easier to set priorities, prepare and better manage the process with appropriate analytics.

Salonit Anhovo has systematically and intensively invested in upgrading the technology in the new cement plant over the past two decades. As technology develops, so do maintenance needs. Because of the obsolescence of the maintenance process and the needs of modern production, we have begun a thorough reengineering of maintenance. By reengineering the maintenance process, we include modern approaches to work. Among them, new technologies that facilitate and improve maintenance are also important. Diagnostics include all specialisations in cooperation with external contractors. Namely, high operational reliability, which is becoming increasingly important on the market today, is achieved precisely with a high share of planned maintenance activities. In addition to the reliability of production with more planned interventions, we also gain in reducing the risk of possible environmental impacts and injuries at work. Namely, problem-solving in a very short time is eliminated, there is no rush to stop and restart.

NAŠ LIST | International Edition | September 2020

Our priorities in the reengineering of the maintenance process include, among others, safety and health at work in maintenance, a preventive maintenance programme, the organisation of work sites maintenance.

The first positive effects At regular meetings, we check the situation weekly and direct activities. After only a few months of intensive cooperation and systematic work, we are already recording the first positive results. In addition to the maintenance department, the project also includes production, ecology and safety and health at work, quality and laboratory, informatics, procurement, human resources and general affairs. The scale of the project requires consistent coordination and a lot of communication and harmonisation.

An example of systematically organized workshop

OBJECTIVES OF MAINTENANCE PROCESS REENGINEERING With the reengineering of the maintenance process, we will achieve the following goals: • increasing operational reliability, • increasing maintenance prevention and reducing unplanned work, • reducing the risks of emergencies (environmental impacts), • introducing modern maintenance approaches, • achieving a more efficient use of resources, • developing partnerships with specialised external contractors.

We can only make improvements together Within the project team, we will inform about the status of implementation promptly and include employees. We will be available for further clarification and assistance in implementing the changes. We will work closely with managers to help individuals accept and put change into practice together. Organisational change can only be successful when individuals embrace it. We want timely feedback from employees on any possible problems so that we can solve them together. We will provide the necessary training to make it as easy as possible to adapt to innovations. In the entire process of upgrading the maintenance process, we use our own experience, good practices and established international standards, and in this way, we draw closer to more modern maintenance organisations in the world. We will also help the company to further build its reputation in the environment. We believe that each of the participants will be proud of their contribution. News from the lab: accreditation and new equipment

Secured raw material basis and jobs for 50+ years

Lojzka Reščič, Tatjana Pešič, Suzana Žnidarčič Šuligoj, Salonit Anhovo

Mitja Šuligoj, Salonit Anhovo, Kamnolomi

The year of 2019 was very eventful for our lab: full of changes, news, challenges and improvements.

Successful accreditation audit The accreditation story in Salonit is more than 8 years old. On the 10th of June 2011 we have managed to acquire for the first time an accreditation certificate for testing laboratory LP–095. In the last week of August this year we successfully completed regular control assessment of Slovenian Accreditation. The scope of accreditation includes analysis methods that are necessary for reporting greenhouse gases emissions, to which Salonit Anhovo is bound based on the requirements of the European directive. This year’s assessment was particularly demanding, as we had to prove to the assessors of Slovenian Accreditation that we have successfully implemented all the changes introduced by the new edition of ISO 17025:2017 standard.

has set new challenges for us. In the field of general requirements, these are mainly requirements regarding impartiality and confidentiality of employees and risk management, which also apply within all other management systems already in place in Salonit Anhovo. The requirements regulate the risks that must be identified in a timely manner and managed with appropriate measures depending on probability of occurrence and severity of consequences. The scope of risk management is to: prevent the production and sales of nonconforming products (ISO 9001); accidents at work (OHSAS 18001); negative effects on the environment (ISO 14001) and nonconforming work of laboratory tests (ISO 17025). In the technical field there is a new requirement for evaluation of measurement uncertainty of sampling. For sampling of petroleum coke from cartridges of 800–1,000 t, clinker and raw meal directly from the process by means of automatic sampling, this represents a big challenge.

What is accreditation?

New equipment

Accreditation is an official and independent recognition of competence for performance of certain activities. In Slovenia, accreditations are awarded by Slovenian Accreditation (SA), which performs the duties of a national accreditation authority. Their certificates are recognised in most European countries.

1. ELTRA CW MULTIPHASE – an instrument for determination of CO2 in raw meal by means of dry-combustion method

Laboratory quality system requirements according to ISO 17025 standard The new ISO 17025:2017 standard, which we had to adapt to this year, NAŠ LIST | International Edition | September 2020

This year we can be particularly proud that we managed to implement in practice within a very short period a new in-house method of CO2 determination in raw meal by means of dry-combustion method. The purchase of the instrument and implementation of the new method, which will replace the current procedure, was necessary, because the SDT 2960 instrument for thermal analysis is worn out and spare parts are no longer available.

The advantages of the new instrument include ease of use, minimum sample preparation, short analysis time, the possibility of analysing a wide range of materials and powerful software (adjustable display, export of results). Its robust design ensures low maintenance costs.

Nearly 100 years ago, when the production of cement began in Soča Valley, it was clear that this raw material was of exceptionally high quality. A lot has changed in cement production since 1921 – such as production technology and sampling, quality management, usage of waste for fuel – and the list goes on. However, the basis has remained unchanged – quality cement requires a quality raw material from a quarry. Based on the latest sampling and acquired licenses there is enough of rock to provide jobs for the next 50 years – according to our plans up till around 2070. We applied for the environmental permit for quarry expansion in 2016, and it was finally acquired after almost three years.

2. A new member of the X-ray instruments family Every instrument has a limited lifespan, so we had to think about replacing our back-up XRF LAB-X 3500 instrument as well. This year we supplemented the equipment of our lab with a new X-ray analyzer Bruker S8 Tiger 2nd generation, which will be included into the automated system of process control in addition to the existing XRF and XRD. In the future, the more powerful XRF instrument with a 4 kW X-ray tube will be used primarily for more time consuming analyses of fuels and raw materials and more demanding analyses of unknown samples.

In the quarry, we have already been investing into machinery in recent years. We upgraded the conveyor belt, which is used for delivering raw material into the cement factory. Last year, we added to the machinery a drone (unmanned aircraft for geodesic recording), which is controlled by a specially trained pilot. We are planning a few larger investments into machinery in the course of this and next year: a dumper – with carrying capacity of 65 tonnes, a vehicle with a cistern for supplying fuel to work machinery and upgrading of the old dumper with a cistern for spraying water on unpaved driving surfaces. In 2020 we will purchase a loader on rubber wheels with the scoop volume of 7 m3. By spring 2020 we will replace the crusher and perform reconstruction of prehomogenisation. Pilot in the cement plant

Brežice HPP and Salonit Anhovo as an example of good practice in Europe

Peter Korenjak, Salonit Anhovo When I found out that Marjana Šuligoj, MSc will spend a part of her working time as a pilot I couldn’t help not being slightly jealous. Who wouldn’t want to pilot a drone at work? However, during the interview it has become clear to me that her work is extremely demanding, requires a lot of studying and that the enjoyment of piloting only represents a small bonus to all the professional knowledge acquired by Marjana during her studies and work at the cement plant.

with future planning of drilling and blasting as well as with short- and long-term planning of digging.” During my preparation for this interview I realised that I have many more questions apart from those about piloting. When did you start thinking that there is job for you in Salonit Anhovo?

Lojzka Reščič and Andrej Ipavec, PhD, Salonit Anhovo Cembureau is a representative body of European cement industry based in Brussels, and Salonit Anhovo is one of its members. Usually its members are national associations, and in some cases individual cement factories. Cembureau acts on behalf of cement industry in front of European institutions and has an important role in the field of promotion of cement, concrete and concrete products.

“I have always been interested in mining works and methods of mining. My favourite subject at the university was technical mining. When thinking where I could perform my obligatory work practice, I told my mentor that I come from Soča Valley and live nearby Salonit Anhovo. From that point, the path led me from work practice to thesis, master’s dissertation and ultimately employment.” Your education is tightly connected with Salonit Anhovo. You completed your work practice in Salonit Anhovo – and wrote your thesis and master’s dissertation while with the company?

One of the main issues and goals of the association’s work is the reduction of CO2 emissions. For this purpose, the association prepares a publication entitled Cements for a low-carbon Europe every few years. The publication presents various solutions offered by the European cement industry by means of replacing clinker in order to reduce carbon footprint of cement and concrete in Europe.

And your master’s dissertation gained national attention? How did you feel about that? She is an exceptional woman fulfilling her work strenuousness in mining. She arrived in Salonit Anhovo to undertake work practice, continued by obtaining her degree and master’s degree and today she is one of our colleagues. For her master’s degree she even received the Prešeren Prize. The reason for our chat is the fact that you became a drone pilot in a quarry. What is the scope of your work?

“Yes. I received Prešeren Prize for my master’s dissertation. Of course I wasn’t expecting it, despite I had a little bit of hope when handing it in, and I did ‘quietly’ wish to receive the prize. I received an e-mail from the university and I literally collapsed. I was overwhelmed by joy and happiness beyond words. After all the hard work and sacrifice that was necessary to write an excellent paper I felt that it was finally all worth it.”

“There are a lot of responsibilities. It is necessary to take into account many factors, such as the weather, permitted flying zone, and each flight must be declared at the civil aviation authority.” Where has the idea come from? “The idea came to light in the development department of Salonit Anhovo.” What are the novelties brought forward by working with a drone in the quarry? “With the help of photographs taken by a drone we will create a 3D-model of the quarry. This model will help NAŠ LIST | International Edition | September 2020

“Yes, that’s right. In my thesis I addressed the possibility of lowering environmental impact of the quarry. The theme of my master’s dissertation was the use of electronic initial system. I would mention that this was the first time that an electronic system was used in the Slovenian territory. Of course I must thank Salonit Anhovo for enabling me to write both papers.”

The association has called on Slovenia to present an example of good practice for publication in the latest edition. We decided to present Brežice hydropower plant, which was built exclusively with our cement, namely with three types of cement used for concrete of various demands. Title

HBrežice HPP is the fifth of the six hydropower plants in the lower Sava river in eastern Slovenia. With the annual energy production of 161 GWh it is not only the largest and most powerful hydropower plant in this section of Sava river, but it also provides the largest contribution to the management of hydro regime of high waters and flood protection. The increase of ground water level in the reservoir area provided for water supply during drought periods. In its construction, the living conditions of animal and plant species that contribute to biotic diversity have been taken into account, as well as social acceptance of the environment, which is a nice example of sustainable approach. Due to the special conditions of implementation and operation, concrete structures of Brežice HPP include concrete for conventional construction and two additional types of concrete with special requirements: hydrotechnical (mass) concrete and concrete resistant to underwater abrasion. In order to achieve these special requirements the most important characteristics were, among others: heat of hydration, low shrinkage, resistance to water penetration, abrasion, and freezing and thawing. Brežice HPP was build using three types of cement: CEM III/B 32.5 N - LH/SR, CEM II/B-M (LL-V) 42.5 N and CEM II/A-M (LL-S) 42.5 R. All three cements are produced with mineral additives, such as granulated blast furnace slag, limestone and fly ash, thereby reducing the content of clinker and significantly contributing to lowcarbon economy. While building concrete structures of Brežice HPP, the important approach of ‘the right cement at the right place’ has been used.

SALONIT GROUP

SALONIT GROUP

Salinvest is gaining recognition Jan Ferjančič, Mitja Pirih, Salinvest

Salinvest is once again the recipient of the Golden Creditworthiness Certificate of Excellence

SALONIT GROUP

Silvester Valentinčič in Mitja Pirih, Salinvest; Ina Zupanc, Salonit Anhovo

More than five years ago we set ourselves a goal to become a recognised provider of all types of machinery services, and by today we have reached and surpassed this goal. Our products are installed in all European markets, on Arabian Peninsula as well as South and North America. We support our customers with the production of complex and special products. We provide the production of machinery components, devices, spare parts and also full plants, for which we also provide commissioning in the presence of the investor. In Salinvest, we can praise ourselves with an example for good practice. A selected team has recognised that they can do something extra and develop a new activity, which has proven as being crucial for the selected customer. This year we developed, in cooperation with our sister company Inde d.o.o., dedicated wooden packaging for a demanding Austrian customer. Our colleagues have cut and heat-treated wood, which we then used in Salinvest for making dedicated pallets for a 40-inch container. We produced as many as 22 such containers, thus making sure that products of suitable quality have reached the destination and that the customer in the US was able to perform installation within the set time-frame.

For the second year in a row, Salinvest, d.o.o. received the Golden Creditworthiness Certificate of Excellence awarded by the Bisnode, d.o.o. Analytical House. This year, 6.92% of companies in Slovenia received such a certificate and we are proud to say that Salinvest is one of them.

reliable every year and undoubtedly trustworthy. In this way, the company also strengthens its reputation in both the domestic and international business environment, where certification is already an established practice.

The golden creditworthiness of excellence is based on the company’s financial statements and other dynamic indicators, monitored over a prolonged period, and predicts the above-average safe and successful operation of the company in the next twelve months.

Along with excellent business results, Salinvest is also gaining increasing visibility, especially in foreign markets. For a client from abroad, we manufactured a scoop wheel, seven-metres in diameter, used for loading bulk cargo. The product travelled a long distance to the customer: first by special transport by road to the port of Antwerp in Belgium, and from there by ship to the end customer in distant Mauritania in Africa.

Product from Anhovo to Mauritania

The construction and installation teams are important parts of Salinvest, and we cooperate very well with them during annual overhauls both in Anhovo as well as Wietersdorf cement factory. Apart from that, the colleagues successfully maintain and renovate industrial and office buildings within Salonit Group.

At Salinvest, we operate with aboveaverage results, reflecting our hard work. The fact that we received the certificate for the second time proves that we are better, more

Salinvest also built three 12 metres long and 3 metres high gates with corresponding hydromechanical equipment for the needs of the irrigation system in Algeria. We believe that these products have taken the company’s good name to distant overseas markets, which will be reflected in new international collaborations in the future as well. COOPERATION

COOPERATION

EMPIR MercOx Project prof. Milena Horvat, PhD, professor and dean at Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School

Concrete and sustainable construction – Concrete and fire resistance Lojzka Reščič, Slovenian Concrete Society (ZBS) and Sašo Seljak, Salonit Anhovo Concrete and sustainable construction is a traditional consultation, which we started in 2013 on the initiative of the Slovenian Cement Producers Association (SLOCEM) and Tomaž Vuk, PhD. Last year, the 4th consultation entitled Concrete and fire resistance was organised by the Slovenian Concrete Society (ZBS) together with colleagues from Salonit Anhovo who played an important part.

COOPERATION

A meeting of MercOX consortium and representatives of Salonit Anhovo

Salonit Anhovo has been chosen as a testing area for testing methodological approaches, developed within the international project EMPIR ‘Metrology for oxidised mercury’ (16ENV01, MercOx).The company follows all legal requirements, performs legally prescribed measurements of mercury emissions, has a measurement network for monitoring air quality and is also engaged in research in the field of environment and environment technologies. The project is coordinated by Jožef Stefan Institute, with participation of partners from Slovenia, Denmark, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Turkey, Italy, Finland and Spain. The project aims to develop traceable methods, which will improve comparability of mercury measurements in the atmosphere and industrial flue gases. Mercury is a very toxic metal with potentially substantial effect on health of people and animals. The important issue is that mercury does not only exist in its elemental form, but

NAŠ LIST | International Edition | September 2020

also in oxidized and other more reactive bio accumulative forms. The project has developed metrological approaches ensuring precise monitoring of mercury levels in the environment, which ultimately helps with implementation of important EU environment directives and Minamata Convention.

After having discussed the themes such as concrete pavements, concrete in buildings and concrete for extreme climate conditions in previous years, we chose the theme of concrete and fire resistance this year. The choice was made due to ZBS’s participation in INTERREG FIREEXPERT project. In 2018, ZBS became a partner in a project aiming at creating a new cross-border Living Lab centre for research and simulations of reaction to fire of composite materials during and after the fire in the area of Slovenia and Austria.

EMPIR Project is co-financed by the European Union’s research and innovation program Horizon 2020 and EMPIR participating countries.

Tomaž Vuk, PhD, greeting participants of the consultation as the first lecturer.

The consultation was organised in cooperation with TIGR Society – Sustainable and Innovative Construction, a non-profit organisation connecting partners in the field of sustainable and innovative construction since 2011. Just like in previous years, the consultation took place in the premises of Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia. The introductory lecture on sustainable aspects of concrete and its usage was given by Tomaž Vuk, PhD. He presented the reasons why concrete is the most efficient and widely used construction material. The participants of the lecturer learned why from the point of fire resistance, concrete is an optimal choice: it does not burn and does not contribute to fire burden, thereby enabling the protection of our property, health and ultimately lives during the fire. Professors from the University of Maribor presented Slovenian legislation in the field of design of reinforced concrete structures in accordance with fire resistance. The consultation continued with lectures given by foreign experts. Fire engineer Mohammad Heidari works at the CERIB Research Centre in France, while Prof. Martin Schneider, PhD, is INTERREG FIREEXPERT project manager working at the University of Applied Sciences in Villach. The guest from France presented experience with fire safety in an 8-storey concrete building. Prof. Schneider, PhD, informed the participants about the project development and presented all the benefits that the created centre will bring to our region. The lectures were concluded

with a practical lecture of Elea iC engineers on use of various types of concrete in tunnel construction with the emphasis on ensuring fire safety. An expert with vast experience in the field of tunnel designing in Austria and Germany assessed Slovenian tunnel constructions as being one of the best in the world. Today, concrete is virtually irreplaceable material in tunnel construction, not only because of its mechanical properties and simple use in construction, but also because of excellent properties in regard to ensuring tunnel fire resistance. The consultation concluded with a round table of all lecturers. Conclusion of the interesting discussion was that, when it comes to fire resistance, concrete is undoubtedly a building material with advantages over other main building materials, such as wood and steel. Slovenian Concrete Society once again successfully linked interdisciplinary experts, from designers to fire safety experts, and once again contributed to raising awareness and improving knowledge in the field of concrete usage, including from the viewpoint of fire resistance. We published a collection of lectures.

The consultation concluded with a round table and an interesting discussion with all lecturers. NAŠ LIST | International Edition | September 2020

Circular economy for better air and less waste Editorial Board

Circular economy should be a part of national planning One of the conclusions made by the organisers was a guidance that circular economy must become a basic philosophy of the society. It impacts both material and energy efficiency as well as improves the society's prosperity. This is supposed to be reflected in the Slovenian National Energy and Climate Plan (NEPN). In the field of waste processing and its thermal utilisation the experts agree that waste must become a part of circular economy. Within the next decade, Slovenia must accelerate preparation of projects for acquiring research, development and other funds to enable faster transition to the carbon-cycling society (low-carbon society with lower emissions of fossil carbon).

Energy from waste

On the 11th and 12th of April 2019 in Moravske Toplice, the 22nd expert consultation took place under the title Circular economy for better air and less waste. Two-day conference drew participation of approximately 200 experts, representatives of NGOs, businesses, institutions and media. They reviewed examples of good practice, exchanged experience and focused on solutions in panel discussions. As an example of good practice, we presented Salonit Anhovo and our use of preprepared fuels made from waste. Full conclusions of the consultation NAŠ LIST | International Edition | September 2020

are available on the following website: www.gospodarnoinodgovorno.si. We prepared a short summary for publication in ‘Naš list’. The consultation was organised by ZEG (Ecological Movement Federation), ZRS Bistra Ptuj, Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Maribor and Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maribor. It was coorganised by SIGD (Slovenian National Forests) and the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology.

Expert committee in charge of the programme: Karel Lipič (president), Viktor Grilc, PhD (vice-president), Peter Novak, PhD (vice-president), Niko Samec, PhD, Filip Kokalj, PhD, Lučka Kajfež Bogataj, PhD, Štefan Čelan, PhD, Klavdija Rižnar, PhD, Miran Lakota, PhD, Tomaž Vuk, PhD, Janez Ekart, PhD, Marinka Vovk, PhD, Nada Pavšer, PhD, Drago Dervarič, Jorg Hodalič, MSc, Borut Hočevar, Rudi Vončina, MSc, Franc Cipot, Jože Leskovar, Cvetka Ribarič Lasnik, PhD, Vilko Pešec, Ivan Kukovec.

Waste is created in all processes. However, it can be used efficiently within the circular economy. Every society is responsible for its proper management for the benefit of the society and the environment. In doing so, we need to take reasonable consideration of waste management hierarchy (reduction, reuse, recycling, thermal utilisation and disposal at landfills). When materials can no longer be recycled, it is sensible to at least make use of their energy content. Use of waste as a source of heat and other types of energy (electricity, biogas, syngas) is safe for the health of people and the environment, if it is performed in accordance with the best techniques available.

In the spirit of development and functioning of ‘smart cities’, large European cities cover a part of their raw material and energy needs from their own waste. In Slovenia there is a high level of separate waste collection and large processing capacities for waste material utilisation, however, there is a lack of facilities or systems for energy utilisation (facilities for electricity and heat co-generation from waste – modern incineration plants, biogas plants, vaporising plants). Due to piling up of such waste and high costs of its processing abroad it is urgently necessary to start planning an optimal system of facilities network (a combination of industrial thermal plants and dedicated plants for thermal processing of waste), which will meet current needs arising from creation of such waste and enable adequate use of released energy. At the same time, it is necessary to improve transparency of the entire integrated waste management system, inform interested wider public by providing data and contribute through a dialogue to the society's understanding of responsible and autonomous waste management. Expert consultations, such as the one that recently took place in MoravskeToplice, are among successful ways for exchanging views and finding the best solutions acceptable for all.

Opinions from the consultation Niko Samec, PhD: “Every facility for thermal utilisation must be maintained, developed, energy efficiency constantly improved. Advantages of co-incineration: use of existing infrastructure, higher energy efficiency, replacement of a proportion of fossil fuels – reduction of CO2 emissions, lower costs for residues after incineration, high level of flexibility in case of fluctuating quantities, lower costs of thermal processing. Combustion temperatures are higher as well. Suitable facilities for co-incineration are cement factories, thermal power plants, heating plants using woody biomass, blast furnaces, lime furnaces, industrial furnaces, and electric arc steel furnaces.” Vagner Mangolo, CEMBUREAU: “Circular economy provides a circular deliberation about recycling and reuse to the greatest possible extent – about materials cycling. The goal is to achieve the best environmental result. Waste Framework Directive recommends co-processing of waste for obtaining energy. In cement industry, we save 18 million tonnes of CO2 by using alternative instead of conventional fuels. Savings achieved in using conventional fuels – natural resources – are important as well. In terms of using alternative fuels, Slovenia is among the best countries having appropriate technology for use of higher proportions of alternative fuels. High energy utilisation is possible if a country has a well organised waste separation and collection, recycling, and suitably implemented waste management policies.”

of Po Valley. Our goal is to further reduce CO2 emissions, which we will achieve by increasing the share of alternative fuels and improving energy efficiency by means of using artificial intelligence. The mayor Tina Gerbec, the director of municipal administration and presidents of local communities received answers to all asked questions. We concluded the presentation and talks with an undertaking to meet again and discuss current topics.

Welcoming new colleagues through apprenticeships Andra Mezek, Salonit Anhovo We are pleased that in 2017 the Apprenticeship Act was adopted. It reintroduces and regulates apprenticeship as a form of educating secondary school pupils within vocational education courses. Through apprenticeship, pupils receive transfer of practical knowledge, hand craftsmanship and valuable long-term experience from older workers. With reintroduction of apprenticeship, pupils can link theoretical knowledge gained at school with practical experience gained within the learning environment in a workshop. An apprentice spends half of the obligatory practical training within the school curriculum in a company. He/she learns through work and becomes trained for his/her future occupation. Therefore, in Salonit Anhovo we understood the challenge and role of apprenticeship as

NAŠ LIST | International Edition | September 2020

an opportunity not only to teach the pupils their future occupation, but also to act as key stakeholders in promoting occupations with shortage of candidates in the labour market. Our human resources department triggered a verification procedure at the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce for learning positions within the course of metal designer – toolmaker. In 2018, the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce issued a decision to Salinvest company on verification of the aforementioned learning positions within apprenticeships. It means that Salinvest company has suitable material and human resources for running apprenticeships. Salinvest company concluded an apprenticeship agreement with Bajro Džafić, who is undertaking education within the course of metal designer – toolmaker.

Salonit Anhovo has been producing cement in Kanal ob Soči municipality for almost 100 years. It is strongly linked with the inhabitants and the community. Throughout the history, the company and the inhabitants have faced ups and downs. In such a long history, that is inevitable for every individual and company. First of all, a company must be economically successful, in order to provide employee wages, fulfil its legal requirements and is able to invest. In our particular case, the next issue is environmental responsibility. Apart from complying with the legislation we continuously invest into best available technologies and all the measurements clearly reflect the trend of substantial decrease of impact on the environment. One of the three pillars

is social responsibility – which starts with our employees, placing particular importance to health and safety at work; and continues with business partners and community, which is the most important source of employees and in which the company operates. The cement plant also creates six indirect jobs per each employment.

Contribution to the municipality budget: just below 600,000 EUR Fulfilling legal obligations towards the municipality represents a part of economic and social responsibility. We contribute just below 600,000 EUR to the municipal budget per year. The amount includes employee personal taxes, concession fees and ground

exploitation fees as well as real estate taxes.

Some 400,000 EUR of voluntary contributions for the community per year Apart from making direct contributions to the municipality, we also ensure free water distribution from Močila reservoir for the inhabitants of Kanal ob Soči municipality. We make sponsorships and donations through direct contributions. We support a range of activities and societies, whose active members include our co-workers. These include numerous sports and culture societies, retiree societies, patient societies and many others. In this way we contribute to the quality and diversity of life.

Salonit Anhovo received OHS AWARD Lojzka Reščič, Salonit Anhovo On the 21st of May 2019 at Tivoli Castle in Ljubljana, Dr. Tomaž Vuk received the OHS AWARD on behalf of Salonit Anhovo. This is an award by the Slovenian Open House (OHS) Festival in the ‘Partner of excellent architecture’ category. On this occasion they decided to award prizes for the first time to companies that are taking part and supporting the OHS festival, and are co-creating excellent architecture with their products, thereby contributing to raising awareness on sustainable solutions tailored to humans for a better place of the future. European Minerals Days 2019 Lojzka Reščič, Mateja Čubej Gašparin, Marjana Šuligoj, Mitja Šuligoj, Salonit Anhovo

ENVIRONMENT

The charm of life is to always set ourselves new challenges, therefore, we wished for something new and different for last year’s event. Remembering positive reactions related to the acoustics from three years ago, it was easy to come up with an idea: a concert of our wind orchestra in Lastivnica quarry. Despite great excitement about the concert we wished to preserve the key purpose of the European Minerals Day, so we also offered guided expert tours. We started by setting on the study trail in the abandoned Lastivnica quarry followed by a visit to the active Rodež quarry. Visitors found the presentation of our unmanned aircraft most interesting. News from the quarry – new environmental permit obtained and larger investment cycle planned – we presented it in an interesting manner at one of Perunk quarry levels at 280 m above sea level.

The event kicks off at Lastivnica study trail, supplemented by the first exhibits of ‘open-air museum’ We welcomed two buses of visitors at the ‘Mineral research in cement industry’ study trail at Lastivnica quarry. We prepared short presentations next to information boards and interesting exhibits, of which the most exciting was perhaps the bulldozer, which marks the beginning of creating an ‘openair museum’.

to the machine. The innovations mostly concerned adaptations for easier and more comfortable use. For instance, they constructed a cab, replaced the winch used for moving the plough with hydraulic cylinders, and replaced the small petrol engine used for starting the diesel engine with a starter including a 24V battery. Excellent innovators indeed! The bulldozer was mainly used for making access paths, pushing the blasted raw material from inaccessible levels into the reach of a loader, and for the quarry’s transport roads maintenance. Apart from Anhovo quarry it was also used at surface clay and flint mining operations in Brežice and Globoko. It was used for groundwork in the course of widening the road to Kal nad Kanalom, for Levpa playground construction and the construction of some forest roads in north Primorska (Gorenje Polje, Trenta, etc.). The bulldozer has proven to be a big attraction for visitors. Interestingly, quite a few visitors recognised the exhibited bulldozer. It made a particularly strong impression in the evening, during the concert, when it looked truly magnificent under the interesting lightning. An interesting group of visitors was made of children and parents from Renče primary school, who visited us as a part of their technical after-school club, and they were very excited about the event. They happily presented their impressions to the cameraman who made a broadcast about the event.

Greetings from mayor Tina Gerbec

European Minerals Days were organised for the first time in 2007 at the initiative of European minerals sector. Ever since, affiliated quarries and factories open their doors at a selected weekend every two years. The purpose of the project is to bring the world of minerals closer to the wider public, especially families, youngsters and children.

Beautiful sunset at level 280

The project is supported by the European Commission, as it is a very good method of building awareness about the role of mineral raw materials in everyday life and about their importance for national and European economies. Minerals are important parts of products that we use every day: from telephones, computers and cars to buildings in which we live and schools attended by our children.
