PALLADIUM

THE CROWNED JEWEL OF PRAGUE SHOPPING Prague is famous for grand monuments, hidden lanes and cafés worth returning to. But there are also places that bring several sides of the city together: the atmosphere of the historic centre, contemporary style, good coffee, fashion, beauty and great food. One of them is PALLADIUM on Republic Square, just a short walk from Old Town Square, the Powder Gate and the Municipal House. Behind its iconic façade in the very heart of the city are almost 200 shops, restaurants and services – an ideal address for a break between sightseeing, a business meeting or an evening out. PALLADIUM is more than a shopping centre. It is an urban meeting point where you can find a new outfit, enjoy a beauty break, stop for a quick lunch or something sweet, or simply take a moment to recharge while exploring Prague. NEW NAMES TO DISCOVER This season has brought several notable additions. Victoria’s Secret on Level +1 brings its iconic world of lingerie, loungewear, fragrances and beauty prod-

ucts to central Prague. For menswear, Feratt is a new destination for suits and elegant fashion, while those looking for shoes, handbags and accessories can head to the new ALDO store on Level -1. The beauty selection has also gained new reasons to stop by. Recent arrivals include Ksisters, specialising in Korean cosmetics, and the fragrant world of Bath & Body Works. Also new on Level -1 is Spanish brand Miramira, offering trendy jewellery and accessories designed for everyday wear – stylish, easy to combine and at accessible prices.

PRACTICAL TIPS Visitors residing outside the EU can use the Global Blue Downtown Refund Service at the Information Kiosk in PALLADIUM, allowing them to arrange their VAT refund before visiting the customs office. Families with young children will appreciate the children’s corner on Level +2 next to Bageterie Boulevard. And if you are heading into the centre by car, PALLADIUM offers convenient 24/7 park-

ing. Current parking availability can be checked at www.palladiumpraha.cz or in the PALLADIUM KLUB app. © Victoria´s Secret

FLAVOURS FROM AROUND THE WORLD When it is time for a break, take the iconic illuminated escalator up to Tasty Garden on Level +2. Here, familiar fastfood names meet flavours from around the world: Asian cuisine, running sushi, Thai dishes and Lebanese specialities, Vietnamese baguettes, Indian cuisine, Neapolitan pizza, burgers, waffles, fresh juices and ice cream. A recent addition is Dhaba Beas, an international vegetarian and vegan restaurant and a great choice for a lighter lunch during the day. Next to Dhaba Beas, the newly opened Malatang brings a popular Chinese speciality to the mix. Choose your own combination of ingredients – from vegetables and mushrooms to meat and noodles – and have them prepared in an aromatic, spicy broth. For a quick refreshment during the day, the new Matcha Crew stand offers original matcha drinks and other treats. Whether you are visiting Prague for the first time or returning for its unique atmosphere, PALLADIUM is an easy stop to add to your itinerary. Slow down for a while, have a coffee, discover a new brand, pick up something new to wear or simply enjoy the city from a different perspective – stylishly, comfortably and right in its heart. And if you are looking for a gift that leaves the choice to the recipient, PALLADIUM now offers a new gift card valid in all shops and restaurants. Its motto says it all: “The world is full of wishes – choose yours.”

Museum Kampa is a museum of modern art, located in the historical center of Prague. The core collection consists of the art collection of Jan and Meda Mládek, who actively supported Czechoslovak non-conformist artists during their stay in exile in the second half of the 20th century. The permanent exhibition of the Museum is dedicated to the paintings and drawings of František Kupka, one of the pioneers of abstract art at the beginning of the 20th century, and the sculptures of the cubist sculptor Otto Gutfreund. Museum Kampa also organizes many short–term exhibitions. Medek / Koblasa – Defying the Ban, with the ÚDU AV ČR and GAVU in Cheb, revisits a landmark 1960s exhibition through works by both artists and newly discovered archival photographs. Milan Kunc – POP RENAISSANCE blends pop culture, irony and surrealist imagination, pairing his 1980s New York, LA and European works with recent paintings on the same motifs. Květa Kovářová – For the Shape of the Figure revives the legacy of a talented sculptor who died in a tragic studio accident. Museum Kampa – The Jan and Meda Mládek Foundation U Sovových mlýnů 503/2, 118 00 Prague 1 Opening: Tuesday–Sunday 10 AM–6 PM

[ O ] WELCOME TO PRAGUE! arriving

Whether you’ve just landed by plane, arrived by train, bus, or car, here is the latest practical information (2026) on how to reach the city centre efficiently and without overpaying.

6

P PRAGUE BY PLANE Václav Havel Airport Prague is located about 17 kilometres northwest of the city centre. After arrival, you will find currency exchange offices as well as ATMs in the terminals, although withdrawing cash is usually the more favourable option. For assistance, you can contact the airport’s general information line (+420 220 111 888), which operates nonstop, or the Lost and Found service at +420 220 115 005.

P HOW TO GET TO THE CITY CENTER Reaching the centre of Prague takes approximately 25 to 40 minutes by car, depending on traffic, or around 35 to 50 minutes if you use public transport.

P… BY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION Public transport remains the most affordable and reliable way to reach the city. Tickets can be purchased easily at vending machines, in kiosks, via the PID Lítačka mobile app, or simply by using a contactless card directly on buses and trams, and at ticket machines in the metro. The current ticket prices are 30 CZK for a 30-minute transfer ticket and 40 CZK for a 90-minute transfer ticket, both allowing unlimited transfers within the time limit. Longer options include a 24-hour ticket for 120 CZK and a 72-hour ticket for 330 CZK. Luggage is included in the basic fare at no extra charge. The most common connection from the airport is trolleybus 59, which runs frequently throughout the day (approximately every 3–10 minutes) and takes passengers to Nádraží Veleslavín, where you can transfer to Metro Line A. The journey takes about 15–20 minutes, and from there it is a direct metro ride to the city centre.

The Airport Express bus provides a direct connection between the airport and the Main Railway Station, with a travel time of around 35 minutes. This service operates on a special fare (around 100–120 CZK) and is mainly intended for passengers transferring to trains. If you arrive late at night, night bus services operate from the airport and connect to night tram lines, which replace metro services during nighttime hours.

P …BY TAXI For those who prefer a more comfortable transfer, taxis and ride-hailing services are readily available at the airport. The official partner service at Václav Havel Airport is Uber, which offers transparent pricing and easy booking via the app or airport kiosks. Alternatively, services such as Bolt are widely used in Prague. A typical journey to the city centre costs between 400 and 800 CZK, depending on traffic and demand. It is generally recommended to avoid unlicensed taxis and instead use official or app-based services

P …BY TRAIN International and domestic trains arrive at Prague Main Railway Station (Praha hlavní nádraží), which is conveniently located close to the city centre.

The station is directly connected to Metro Line C, and Wenceslas Square is only a short walk away. The station has undergone extensive renovation and now offers modern facilities, including shops, cafés, and fast-food restaurants.

P …BY BUS Florenc is Prague’s central bus station and serves both domestic and international routes. It is located near the city centre and is directly connected to Metro Lines B and C. The station has also been modernised and offers clean, well-organised spaces, food options, and clear digital boards displaying departures and arrivals.

P …BY CAR Travelling to Prague by car can be challenging due to heavy traffic and limited parking options in the city centre. Street parking is divided into zones, and blue zones are reserved for residents, with strict enforcement. Visitors are therefore advised to use Park and Ride (P+R) facilities located near major roads and metro stations, allowing easy access to the city centre via public transport.

P …BY SUBWAY Prague’s metro system consists of three lines: Line A (green), Line B (yellow), and Line C (red). The network is well designed and provides fast connections to most important locations across the city. Metro services run daily from approximately 5:00 a.m. until midnight.

arriving

Another option is Bus 100, which connects the airport with Zličín on Metro Line B. Although slightly less convenient for reaching the historic centre, it can be useful depending on your destination.

7

PUBLIC TRANSPORT Prague’s public transport system is clear, efficient, and reliable, with an extensive network covering the entire city. The fares remain very affordable – 30 CZK for a 30-minute ticket and 40 CZK for a 90-minute ticket.

arriving

Tickets can be purchased from vending machines located in all metro stations and at many tram stops (accepting coins and, in most cases, contactless cards), as well as in most tobacco shops and kiosks. You can also buy a mobile (SMS) ticket by sending a text message to 90206. SMS tickets are mainly available for local Czech mobile numbers and may not work reliably for international visitors.

8

Another convenient option is the PID Lítačka mobile app, which is available for both iOS and Android. It is fully accessible to foreign visitors and allows you to purchase tickets, search for connections, and manage your transport easily without needing SMS or paper tickets.

Long-term tickets: 24-hour ticket: 120 CZK 72-hour (3-day) ticket: 330 CZK Single tickets: 30 minutes (transfer ticket): 30 CZK 90 minutes (transfer ticket): 40 CZK Don’t forget to validate your ticket when first entering the metro or boarding a tram or bus (insert the ticket into one of the yellow validation machines to print the date and time). SMS tickets: Send an SMS with the code to 90206: DPT30 – 30-minute ticket for 30 CZK DPT40 – 90-minute ticket for 40 CZK DPT120 – 24-hour ticket for 120 CZK DPT330 – 72-hour ticket for 330 CZK More information about Prague’s public transport, including current fares, network maps, and service updates, can be found on www. dpp.cz. For personalised assistance (such as help with route planning, ticket types, or service changes) you can also call the free customer infoline at +420 296 191 817, which is available daily and provides support in English and other languages.

CHRÁM MATKY BOŽÍ PŘED TÝNEM PRAGUE 1, STAROMĚSTSKÉ NÁMĚSTÍ

The Church of Our Lady before Týn (Kostel Matky Boží před Týnem) is located in Prague’s Old Town, near Old Town Square. Its construction took place from the mid-14th century to the early decades of the 16th century. It is one of Prague’s most artistically and architecturally significant churches, known for its well-preserved interior. Its western façade, facing the square, is one of Prague’s most iconic landmarks.

PRAŠNÁ BRÁNA PRAGUE 1, NÁMĚSTÍ REPUBLIKY 5

The Powder Gate (Prašná brána) is a late-Gothic structure and one of the most important monuments of medieval Prague. It was here that the Royal Route began and where one of the main roads from Kutná Hora, where silver from Kutná Hora was transported to the royal treasury, led. The Powder Gate was built in place of the older Gate tower, which formed part of the Old Town fortifications from the time of Václav II‘s reign. The older tower was known as the Mountain Gate. The Powder Gate served both as a ceremonial gateway and a customs collection point.

STAROMĚSTSKÝ ORLOJ PRAGUE 1, STAROMĚTSKÉ NÁMĚSTÍ

The Old Town Square of the Old Town Orloj (Staroměstský orloj) are medieval astronomical clocks located on the south side of the Old Town Hall tower in Prague. The first written reference to Orloj dates back to 1410.The clock is made up of several parts – apart from an astronomical and calendar plate, it is fitted with the mechanism of twelve apostles, who appear in two small windows every entire hour (9.00 – 11p.m.). In a parade of apostles, another mannequin on the sides of the clock comes alive in mechanical motion - the reaper ringing, turning the hourglass, indicating to thestanding Turk that his time is up. He‘s shaking his head away. Vanity and Lakomec behave similarly. The sought-after Orloj is part of the historic centre of Prague, belonging to the UNESCO list of cultural monuments.

iconic buildings

For over 1000 years, Prague has been one of the main political, cultural and economic centres of the Czech lands. Having served as an imperial seat, most notably under Charles IV and later Rudolf II, it also had the status of the Holy Roman Empire capital. The city’s recorded history dates back to around 870, with the foundation of Prague Castle, although evidence shows the area had been inhabited since the Stone Age. The city flourished during the 14th century, under the reign of Charles IV, who, among other deeds, ordered the construction of landmarks such as Charles Bridge and St. Vitus Cathedral, and Charles University, one of the oldest universities in Central Europe. Prague was then one of the most important cities in Europe. Now home to some 1.2 million inhabitants, Prague became the capital of the newly established state of Czechoslovakia in 1918, with the end of World War I and the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1992, Prague’s historic centre became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is currently one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations.

Forget ordinary exhibitions. Here, you don’t simply observe the story – you become part of it. A drop of blood, a barely visible trace, an insignificant detail… these were the clues Sherlock Holmes used to uncover truths everyone else had missed. Now it is your turn – put your powers of deduction to the test and try his methods for yourself. Bringing together science, history and literature, the exhibition explores the fascinating origins of Sherlock Holmes and reveals how his ingenious methods helped shape modern forensic science. Step into the world of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle – physician, visionary and author whose imagination transformed detective fiction forever. Original manuscripts, rare period artefacts and authentic props transport you to the era in which one of literature’s greatest icons was born. One of the exhibition’s highlights is a visit to the legendary 221B Baker Street. The door opens onto the sitting room shared by Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson – the setting in which their most intricate cases were solved. Yet the real adventure lies in becoming a detective yourself. At the start, you will

receive an elegant notebook filled with clues and set out to solve an entirely new case created exclusively for this international exhibition. Your powers of observation, logic and intuition will all be put to a carefully devised test. The final section will delight pop-culture fans, tracing more than 126 years of Sherlock Holmes on page and screen – from historic illustrations and film props to costumes from celebrated television series. Tickets are available online at goout.net or at the venue.

Finnish rapper Käärijä, who won Europe over with his energy and the hit Cha Cha Cha, returns to Prague in October. At SaSaZu he will present his distinctive blend of rap, electronic music and pop, with the strong visual show that is now his trademark. Since finishing second at Eurovision 2023, he has built a strong following across Europe, and his Prague concert promises one of this autumn’s most memorable music nights.

Tenderness, humour and unease meet in this major art show by French artist Annette Messager. A Venice Biennale Golden Lion winner, she works with textiles, photography, toys, drawing and installation, and has spent over fifty years exploring the body, identity, gender, desire and memory. Across five decades, the Prague exhibition traces her key themes as familiar objects become unsettling. Her art has also been shown at MoMA, Centre Pompidou and London’s Hayward Gallery.

On four autumn nights, Prague’s streets, squares and historic buildings become a digital gallery. Signal Festival combines video mapping, light, sound, technology and architecture. Part of the programme is freely accessible in public space, while other projects feature in the ticketed Signal INSIDE zone. The 2026 edition explores the theme Dream On! and takes visitors along several routes through the city centre. The festival reveals familiar Prague places from an entirely different perspective.

After a full century, Prague revisits Jaroslav Čermák in a broader European context. It follows his journey from Prague via Brussels and Paris to the Balkans and Brittany, with loans from major collections. The celebrated painting The Abduction of a Herzegovinian Woman, with which Čermák triumphed at the Paris Salon of 1861, also returns to Prague after more than 150 years. The exhibition is organised with the National Gallery Prague.

PRAGUE THAT FITS IN A SUITCASE Czech glass, designer jewellery, original artwork or a fragrance created in Prague. A souvenir needn’t recall famous landmarks; it can tell the story of today’s city and the people who create here. Prague’s best-known motifs appear almost everywhere. Still, the city’s most interesting mementoes are often found a few streets away, in design shops, small galleries and local artists’ studios. Here you can discover a Prague that draws on a strong craft tradition while interpreting it in a contemporary and sometimes surprisingly playful way. Czech design has long centred on glass and porcelain. Alongside classic collections, designers create hand-blown glasses, delicate vases, minimalist jewellery, and ceramics for everyday use. Their value lies not only in the origin of the material, but in the maker’s personal signature. Slight differences between individual pieces are not flaws; they remind us that the object did not come from an anonymous production line. One place to explore the breadth of contemporary Czech creativity is CZECH-

DESIGN Shop. It brings together accessories, jewellery, ceramics, books, toys and products from smaller local brands. Qubus presents a bolder, experimental side of Czech design, working with glass and porcelain with flair, humour and a desire to challenge established ideas about traditional craftsmanship. Gallery and museum shops are worth visiting. They are more than places to buy a postcard at the last minute. Their collections include original prints, photographs, specialist and illustrated books, limited editions, and small objects created especially for the institution. A poster, notebook or illustration

BEDEKER TIP Look for items you will use when you return home. A glass, piece of jewellery, scarf or art print can become a natural part of daily life rather than simply another decoration left among other souvenirs. A SCENT THAT RECALLS PRAGUE The Czech beauty scene has long since gone beyond spa traditions and herbal recipes alone. Today it encompasses niche perfumes, aromatherapy, natural cosmetics and brands that give equal attention to ingredients, effectiveness and visual presentation. Scent has a unique ability to preserve memories. One familiar note can return you to a specific place: a garden after rain, a silent church or the café where you spent a cold afternoon. That is why a perfume, candle, or aromatic oil can be a more personal reminder of a journey than a conventional souvenir. Prague’s perfume scene may be smaller than Paris or London, but it is clearly distinctive. Czech perfume house Pigmentarium connects fragrance with visual art, architecture and the city’s atmosphere. Its compositions avoid obvious Prague symbols and instead capture the city’s moods: the contrast between historic interiors and contemporary life, intimacy and understated eccentricity. Alongside artisan perfumes, natural

cosmetics and aromatherapy have an established place in the Czech Republic today. Nobilis Tilia works with essential oils and fragrances selected not only according to personal preference, but also for their role in everyday care. Botanicus draws on herb cultivation and traditional cosmetic recipes. Czech brands also offer facial oils, soaps, balms, bath blends, and creams suited to cold weather. Prague in autumn and winter reveals this world at its most natural. After hours outdoors, slow down, warm up and give your skin the care it needs in freezing weather and heated interiors. A quality hand cream, balm, or small facial oil is a practical choice for travelling. A candle, home fragrance or perfume, meanwhile, can bring back the atmosphere of your stay long after you return home. Do not hurry when buying perfume. A fragrance develops on the skin and it may reveal its true character only after several hours. If you are choosing a gift, a candle, body-care product or discovery set of smaller samples may be the safer option. Contemporary Czech cosmetics do not have to feel folkloric or nostalgic. Their most interesting form emerges where expertise in herbs, spa culture and fragrance meets modern formulas, clean design, and each brand’s personal story. BEDEKER TIP Do not choose a fragrance by its first impression on a paper tester. Apply it to your skin, walk through the city and choose it later. You may eventually associate it with that day in Prague.

shopping and beauty

can also make an appealing souvenir while taking up almost no room in your luggage. When choosing Czech design, look for the maker’s name, country of origin, and materials used. The label ‘Czech design’ does not automatically mean that an item was actually made in the Czech Republic. With glass and ceramics, ask for secure packaging for the journey; small shops are usually accustomed to serving travellers. The best souvenir need not feature the silhouette of Prague Castle or the word Prague. It’s enough that it was made here and recalls a specific street, encounter or moment spent in the city.

BEYOND PRAGUE: CASTLES AND CHATEAUX WORTH THE JOURNEY

36

Prague is only the beginning. Beyond the capital, the Czech Republic is filled with hilltop castles, romantic chateaux, magnificent gardens and centuries of stories waiting to be discovered. Some are less than an hour away, others invite you to turn a day trip into a longer journey through the country. From medieval fortresses and royal residences to fairy-tale palaces and hidden treasures, there is an extraordinary variety to explore. So if you have already wandered through Prague Castle and the streets of the Old Town, it might be time to see what lies beyond the city. START CLOSE TO PRAGUE One of the easiest escapes is Karlštejn, founded by Charles IV in 1348. Rising above a wooded valley, the castle once protected royal treasures, holy relics and the Imperial Crown Jewels. The walk through the village to its gates is part of the experience, and direct trains from Prague make it an easy day trip. Not far away, Křivoklát offers a more secluded atmosphere. Surrounded by the forests of Central Bohemia, this medieval royal castle combines Gothic architecture, historic interiors and beautiful countryside. South of Prague, Kono-

piště tells another story as the former residence of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, whose assassination in Sarajevo preceded the outbreak of the First World War. FROM HIDDEN TREASURES TO FAIRY-TALE PALACES Further west, Bečov nad Teplou hides one of the country’s most fascinating stories. Its Romanesque Reliquary of St Maurus was concealed beneath the floor of the castle chapel and rediscovered in 1985. Today, the original masterpiece can be seen within a remarkable complex combining a Gothic castle, Renaissance palace and Baroque chateau.

For pure romance, head south to Hluboká nad Vltavou. With its white towers, richly decorated interiors and landscaped grounds, it looks as though it belongs in a fairy tale. It also makes a natural stop on a longer journey through South Bohemia.

decorated façades, elegant interiors and beautifully preserved historic theatre. MAKE THE JOURNEY PART OF THE EXPERIENCE You do not need to see them all. Choose a castle near Prague for an easy day trip, combine Hluboká with South Bohemia, discover Lednice while travelling through Moravia or simply pick a place you have never heard of before. Because beyond Prague, the Czech Republic has another side waiting to be explored – one filled with castles, chateaux, gardens, forests and stories that make the journey itself part of the experience.

activity tips

PALACES, PARKS AND EUROPEAN HISTORY Close to the Austrian border, Lednice is about much more than the chateau itself. Its Neo-Gothic architecture is surrounded by an extensive park filled with romantic landmarks, including a minaret, greenhouse and artificial castle ruins. Together with neighbouring Valtice, it forms part of the UNESCO-listed Lednice–Valtice Cultural Landscape. History takes centre stage at Slavkov, known internationally as Austerlitz. The elegant Baroque chateau stands close to the landscape where Napoleon defeated the Austrian and Russian armies in the famous Battle of the Three Emperors in 1805. And if Renaissance architecture is more your style, continue to Litomyšl. Its UNESCO-listed chateau is famous for its

More than seven thousand collection items are housed in exceptional exhibition spaces. The exhibits are complemented by dioramas, audiovisual elements and QR codes. For the youngest visitors, the museum offers quizzes, cut-out games and haptic objects. The first part of the exhibition is dedicated to the historical period up to 1740. The next exhibition presents the historical period from 1740 to 1914. In the exhibition of the First World War 1914–1918, the connecting motif is a train that imaginatively takes the visitor to the trenches. The next part of the exhibition focuses on the period 1918 to 1938, starting with the return of Czechoslovak legionaries to Czechoslovakia, continuing with the formation of the Czechoslovak Legion. The final section is devoted to the political situation in the 1930s. The extensive exhibition 1938–1948 covers the period after Munich, the Second World War and the post-war period. There are unique objects on display, such as Otakar Jaroš‘s pistols or the personal belongings of paratroopers. Anoth-

The crypt has been preserved in almost identical condition as it was occupied by the paratroopers and where they fought their last battle against the hundredfold German superiority on 18 June 1942. MUMLAVA WATERFALL

ADD A LITTLE WILD WATER TO YOUR AUTUMN Colourful forests, crisp mountain air and water tumbling over massive granite steps – Mumlavský Waterfall near Harrachov is made for an autumn escape. At almost ten metres high, the waterfall is impressive in its own right, but there is more to discover. In the Mumlava riverbed, swirling water has carved deep hollows into the granite known as the Giant’s Kettles, nicknamed the Devil’s Eyes. Reaching the waterfall is easy: from Harrachov, it is a pleasant walk of around 1.5 kilometres. And if you are not ready to turn back, continue through the Mumlava Valley and turn a short waterfall stop into a few hours in the mountains. FROM PRAGUE: approx. 2 hours by car

Today, the cave is freely accessible in the National Garden, making it easy to combine with a walk across Kotouč hill. In autumn, the surrounding landscape takes on a particularly atmospheric character. Here, history and a great day out come together naturally. FROM PRAGUE: approx. 3 hours 15 minutes by car

How to Get Here:

Looking for a different side of the Czech Republic beyond Prague? In winter, Kutná Hora slows down and reveals a quieter kind of charm. From November to December, its historic centre brings together medieval architecture, Advent traditions, music, design and the scent of mulled wine. With fewer visitors than in summer, it is an ideal time to explore the city’s heritage at a more relaxed pace. November is the last opportunity of the year to visit Hrádek and discover the story of Kutná Hora’s silver mining and silversmithing. Pair it with a walk through the historic centre and enjoy the city’s landmarks in a calmer atmosphere.

Palackého Square comes alive with Kutná Hora Music Advent, combining market stalls with live music and concerts. But winter in Kutná Hora is about more than Christmas markets. Shorter days bring a special atmosphere to its illuminated streets, towers and the silhouette of St Barbara’s Cathedral, while cafés, restaurants, galleries and museums offer plenty of reasons to linger. UNESCO-listed heritage, culture, food and an intimate Advent mood make Kutná Hora a rewarding winter escape.

Contemporary culture also has its place here. On 28 November 2026, ADVENT–DESIGN–GASK takes over the former Jesuit College, bringing together original design, creative gifts and a festive atmosphere in a remarkable historic setting. In December, Advent takes over the city. Christmas markets fill the courtyard of the Italian Court on Advent Sundays with crafts, food and a programme of events. On 5, 12 and 19 December,

THE BEST OF PRAGUE:

UNIQUE BREWERY, OUTSTANDING FOOD, UNFORGETTABLE ATMOSPHERE Located in Prague’s iconic Masaryčka building, designed by Zaha Hadid, FUZE is the only restaurant in the Czech Republic with its own glass brewhouse — brewing fresh, unfiltered beer right inside the dining room. It’s an experience you won’t find anywhere else.

is also one of Prague’s busiest lunch spots, serving around 700 meals daily. Weekends welcome families with a special menu and a small children’s corner. Don’t miss top Czech spirits and coffee roasted just meters away by Made in Coffee.

The food is just as impressive. FUZE serves one-of-a-kind dishes made from top-quality ingredients. The legendary Thor’s Hammer — a 700g slow-braised and wood-fired beef knuckle for 2 to 4 people — is unlike anything else in Prague. There’s also the Beef Wellington with truffle mushroom duxelles and demi-glace, and the Shrimp Roll with 12 Argentine red shrimp, cognac cocktail sauce, and fries. And that’s just a taste — the full menu offers more, including monthly specials that bring seasonal variety. With two floors and outdoor seating, FUZE offers one of the largest and most original restaurant interiors in Prague. The design blends modern architecture with industrial style, warm wood, leather, street art, and curated details — creating a truly memorable setting. Live DJ sets every Thursday to Saturday create a lively, welcoming vibe. FUZE

U PRAVDŮ

AN OLD BOHEMIAN EXPERIENCE Bring it to the table, let the Truth be revealed! Take a trip back to a time when portions were fairer, ducks meatier, and beer more drinkable. With today’s tip, you will visit the unique and historic U Pravdů restaurant, where beer has been on tap since 1888. You can visit this Czech delicacy while strolling through Prague. Just choose the silver tourist trail, whose signs are stamped in the curbs and will reliably lead you to Žitná Street. As an attraction beyond the tourist guide, you can take a photo at the house where the world-famous composer Antonín Dvořák lived, as this house is also in Žitná Street directly opposite the U Pravdů restaurant.

The total capacity of the restaurant is 68 seats and it is divided into 3 parts. Main hall, bar and lounge, with a capacity of 42, 8 and 18 guests. On rainy summer days the garden in the courtyard of the house is open with a capacity of about 50 seats. The history of the U Pravdů restaurant dates back to 1888, when Mr. František Pravda asked for permission to build a gazebo in which he would brew beer according to the law of the brewery. References to the house in which the restaurant is located date back to the 14th century, when the house was successively called U Lajblů, U Chlupů, U Tikánů or Kalivodský. During the Renaissance, it was beautifully decorated, and its

brewery façade with a gable attic was an ornament of Žitná Street.

restaurants/cafés/bars

In the U Pravdů restaurant you will agree with those who enjoy that beautiful time of stylish lamps, carved chairs, old bicycles, black and white photos and traditional Czech cuisine, which was best served by the mothers of Czech grandmothers. The current interior, which has been used since the turn of the millennium, is similar to the original look of the time. Most of the restaurant’s accessories are original or historical. The restaurant serves Pilsner, Polička, semi-dark Ferdinand and unfiltered Unětice. The interior will delight lovers of the First Republic, in whose style it is decorated. Lots of small touches and details will make a proper feast a real experience for all senses. And what delicacies does this Old Bohemian restaurant offer, among others? Delicious roast pork ribs, roast duck, rabbit on spinach and bacon, pork, dumplings, very, goulash or meat skewer. That is just a modest list of what you will be licking your lips for at the U Pravdů restaurant. And believe me, this is no tourist trap. Even the biggest Czech patriots will be thrilled to try the local cuisine.

55

And we have to mention the helpful service that will advise you. After all, Czech cuisine is quite specific, so do not be afraid to have anything recommended. Personally, we would bet that whatever you choose, you will not regret it, but you cannot give anything for asking. So, if you intend to visit an honest old Bohemian restaurant while wandering around Prague, you will not go wrong at the U Pravdů restaurant. Whether we are talking about food, drink or the overall concept, everything here is exactly as it should be. The place is in a great location, you will feel the atmosphere of a traditional Czech restaurant in the best possible sense of the word and you will be delighted by its offer. This is what a proper cultural and gastronomic experience should look like. th.

THE PRAGUE YOU WALK OVER WITHOUT NOTICING LOOK CLOSER. SOME OF THE CITY’S BEST STORIES ARE HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT. Prague makes it easy to look at the obvious. Castle towers rise above the rooftops, church spires shape the skyline and grand façades compete for attention at almost every turn. But some of the city’s most fascinating details are much smaller. They are carved above doorways, hidden beneath windows, worked into stone and metal, or waiting just a few metres above eye level. LOOK UP Slow down and Prague begins to reveal another layer. Look above the shop-

fronts and you will find sculpted faces, floral ornaments, coats of arms, statues and decorative details that can turn an ordinary façade into a work of art. Windows are framed by elaborate stonework, balconies carry delicate iron railings and rooftops are finished with towers, domes and figures that are easy to miss when you are watching the pavement or following a map. READ THE FAÇADES Prague’s architecture is not one single style. Centuries sit side by side, sometimes on the same street. Gothic forms, Renaissance details, theatrical Baroque decoration, elegant Art Nouveau and later modern architecture all leave their

LOOK CLOSER The pleasure is often in the smallest things: a face staring down from a façade, a weathered relief, an old inscription, an unusual door handle or a lamp that seems designed for the street around it. These details survived because generations of people lived, worked and walked past them. Together, they give Prague its character – not as a museum, but as a city built in layers. So next time you walk through Prague, slow down. Look above the shop windows, beneath your feet and through open gateways. The landmark may be around the corner, but the detail you remember most might be right in front of you.

marks. You do not need to know their names to enjoy them. Notice how one building is covered in ornament while its neighbour is restrained; how stone, plaster, glass and metal change from house to house; how a doorway or window can tell you that you have stepped into another period.
