BASIC CZECH PHRASES THAT COULD (AND WILL) COME IN HANDY

When you go to a foreign country, you automatically rely on the English language.

And it usually works, at least in big cities. Still, it’s good to know at least some basic phrases in the language of the country you’re going to.

It has its charm when one is in a foreign country and knows at least some of the basics. The following phrases will certainly come in handy, whether you are communicating or perhaps looking at various signs.

Hello. Dobrý den.

Thank you. Děkuji. Goodbye. Nashledanou. Excuse me. Promiňte.

Nice to m eet you.Těší mě, že Vás poznávám

Do you take cards? Berete karty?

Cash only. Pouze hotovost. Where‘s the ATM? Kde je bankomat?

One beer, please. Jedno pivo, prosím.

A glass of wine, please. Skleničku vína, prosím.

Coffee, please. Kávu, prosím.

The bill, please. Účet, prosím.

I‘m a vegetarian. Jsem vegetarián.

Bon appetit! Dobrou chuť!

Where‘s the toilet, please? Kde je prosím záchod?

It‘s too expensive. To je moc drahé.

Do you have anything cheaper? Nemáte něco levnějšího?

I‘m sorry, I don‘t understand. Promiňte, nerozumím.

I don‘t speak Czech. Nemluvím česky.

Where is the hotel (name of hotel)? Kde je hotel (název hotelu)?

Where is the square? Kde je náměstí?

Where is the embassy? Kde je ambasáda?

How do you pronounce it? Jak se to vyslovuje?

There‘s no hot water running. Neteče tam teplá voda.

I‘d like to sign out. Rád bych se odhlásil.

Can you call me a taxi, please? Můžete mi prosím zavolat taxi?

Finally, some phone numbers: if you need to call the police, dial 158. The emergency number is 155 and the fire brigade number is 150. The operators‘ lines always offer English, so you don‘t have to worry about not being understood.
