De Van Eyck is een internationale, multidisciplinaire postacademie voor beeldende kunst, ontwerp en reflectie in Maastricht. Veelbelovende kunstenaars, ontwerpers, curatoren, fotografen, architecten en schrijvers vanuit de hele wereld krijgen in de academie de ruimte en de tijd om hun talenten te ontwikkelen. Zij hebben een eigen studio en kunnen gebruik maken van de goed geoutilleerde Labs. De Van Eyck heeft een (publiek) programma van samenwerkingsprojecten, tentoonstellingen, presentaties en lezingen; zij werkt samen met maatschappelijke partijen en partners uit de wetenschap en de kunsten.

In Marres, Huis voor Hedendaagse Cultuur, worden met tentoonstellingen, lezingen, onderzoek, performances en publicaties de beeldende kunsten in de breedste zin van het woord verkend. Samen met kunstenaars, muzikanten, vormgevers, koks en parfumeurs ontwikkelt Marres een nieuw vocabulaire voor de zintuigen en maakt tentoonstellingen waarbij je letterlijk in het kunstwerk stapt.

Bureau Europa, platform voor architectuur en design biedt als presentatie- en netwerkorganisatie tentoonstellingen en andere activiteiten op het gebied van architectuur en vormgeving vanuit een sociaal-maatschappelijke invalshoek.

De blik van deze culturele instelling is allereerst gericht op Europa en de Euregio met de daaraan verbonden sociale en maatschappelijke agenda.

Michael Shanks: Op dinsdag 29 augustus om 18.00 uur zal Michael Shanks The Materiality of the Invisible in de Van Eyck openen.

Shanks is hoogleraar klassieke archeologie aan Stanford University.

Daarnaast heeft hij zich ontwikkeld tot een van de belangrijkste denkers en vernieuwers van de hedendaagse archeologie. Zijn boek The Archaeological Imagination is een meeslepend pleidooi voor een inclusieve benadering van het verleden en tegen de marginalisering van wat niet tot het gewenste verleden behoort. Met zijn rijkgeschakeerde en multidisciplinaire benadering van het verleden – gebruikmakend van het werk van archeologen, antropologen, etnologen, sociologen, kunstenaars – geeft hij zelf het voorbeeld.

The Van Eyck is a multidisciplinary post-academic institute for fine art, design and reflection. HET GROTE NIETS WORDT TASTBAAR

Oude kunst en archeologie, daar kan iedereen zich van alles bij voorstellen. Een paar voorbeelden: de schilder Rafaël werd door paus Leo X als archeoloog aangesteld om toezicht te houden op oudheidkundig onderzoek, op de blootlegging van klassieke tempels en de vondsten van het oude Rome. Kunstenaars uit geheel Europa trokken eeuwenlang naar Rome om ruïnes te schilderen en het antieke Romeinse leven te verbeelden. Zij verzamelden archeologische artefacten en namen die op in hun werk. Rembrandt had zijn atelier volgestouwd met kostbare oude spullen.

Hedendaagse kunst en archeologie lijken daarentegen elkaars uitersten te zijn. In de moderne tijd heeft de kunstenaar een voorhoedepositie veroverd. Als de frontsoldaat van de toekomst kijkt hij vooruit. De archeoloog daartegenover kijkt achteruit. Hij schept in de grond, gebogen over zijn zelf gegraven gat van het verleden. Hij staat in de loopgraven van de geschiedenis. Zo althans wordt vaak gedacht en afhankelijk van hoe je ernaar kijkt, is het - op een bepaalde manier - nog waar ook.

T H E VAS T U N K N OW N B EC O M E S TA N G I B L E Old art and archaeology – that is an association that is readily made. Pope Leo X, for example, appointed the painter Raphael as an archaeologist to supervise research on antiquities, in particular to uncover the classic temples and artefacts of ancient Rome. For centuries, artists from all over Europe made their way to the city to paint the ruins and to feast their imagination on scenes of life in ancient Roman times. They collected archaeological objects and incorporated them into their work. Rembrandt’s studio was full of valuable antique paraphernalia.

Contemporary art, on the other hand, seems at first sight like the very opposite of archaeology. The artist has claimed a pioneering position in modern times.

Maar zonder al te veel inspanning is het ook mogelijk het heel anders te bekijken en onverwachte overeenkomsten tussen de hedendaagse archeoloog en de hedendaagse kunstenaar te zien.

Zo maken beiden zichtbaar wat eerst onzichtbaar was. Wat de archeoloog uit de grond haalt, was tot dat moment onzichtbaar. Je kan zelfs zeggen dat het zo niet eerder bestond: het gevonden fragment, de scherf, het gehavende of het gebroken object is door de grond waar het in lag aangetast, de tijd heeft er zijn onvervreemdbare sporen in achtergelaten. De kunstenaar op zijn beurt maakt iets wat nog niet bestond en maakt zo tegelijk zichtbaar wat tot dan onzichtbaar was.

Een mooi voorbeeld is La Lumière Cistercienne Clairvaux van Marinus Boezem: hij trok met lichtgevoelige bladen papier naar de overblijfselen van de kloosters van de cisterciënzers. Het zuivere, goddelijke licht waar de monniken in geloofden en dat hij daar op zijn fotopapier opving, werd zwart in de ontwikkelaar van de donkere kamer.

Boezems zwarte licht is net zo mysterieus en onbegrijpelijk als de vondst van een opgraving. Beide voeren ons naar de rand van onze verbeelding waar wij, voorovergebogen over het onbekende, proberen te begrijpen wat we zien.

En zo raken we een andere overeenkomst tussen kunstenaar en archeoloog: beiden moeten wat zichtbaar geworden is activeren, betekenis geven en presenteren opdat de mensen kunnen begrijpen waar zij naar kijken. In de verhalen die de kunstenaar en de archeoloog construeren en die ook weer door anderen geconstrueerd worden, kan die betekenis dan weer velerlei vormen aannemen.

This is, at least, a widely held image and depending on your viewpoint there may be a fair measure of truth to it.

But it is not hard to view the comparison quite differently, to perceive surprising parallels between the contemporary archaeologist and the contemporary artist. Both, for example, are concerned with making hidden things visible. The object that the archaeologist unearths was hitherto invisible. One could even say that it did not previously exist as such: the found fragment, the shard of pottery, the damaged or broken utensil, is corroded by the soil in which it lay. Time has engraved its inevitable traces.

The artist in turn creates something that did not exist before, thereby revealing what was previously invisible. A splendid example is provided by La Lumière Cistercienne Clairvaux by the artist Marinus Boezem. He visited the ruined Cistercian abbeys with a supply of light-sensitive paper, which he used to register the pure, divine light that inspired the faith of the Cistercian monks of old.

The parts of the paper exposed to the light blackened in the developing trays of the darkroom. Boezem’s black light is as mysterious and puzzling as an archaeological find; both carry us to the edge of our imagination where, bent over the unknown, we try to understand what we see.

This brings us to another similarity between the artist and the archaeologist.

Both have the task of activating what has been revealed; interpreting its significance and presenting it in a way that those who come to see it will understand.

In the narratives that artists and archaeologists construct, and which others reconstruct, this significance can take many different forms.

“It is the associated narrative which instils values and meanings into an object and which motivates its preservation” Their narratives are also important in that they assign a rich diversity of connections to the ostensibly valueless finds. If you didn’t know that the scratches on a seventh-century BC potsherd formed the name Yahweh, you might walk by without giving it a second glance. A cleaner once disposed of one of Joseph Beuys’ fat sculptures as garbage – something that would not have happened if she had known that it was a work of art by Beuys, laden with artistic, personal and symbolic meanings. It is the associated narrative which instils values and meanings into an object and which motivates its preservation.

Wat gemaakt en gevonden wordt, heeft de kracht ons perspectief op het verleden, het heden en daarmee de toekomst te veranderen. De abstracte schilderkunst met haar nadruk op vorm en kleur gaf ons een andere blik op de kunst uit het verleden. Een schilderij uit de middeleeuwen hoefde niet (alleen) meer religieus beschouwd te worden; de heiligen werden vormen in de ruimte, dragers van kleur. Die veranderde blik gaf op haar beurt weer nieuwe wendingen aan de eigentijdse kunst.

Een recente vondst van een paar menselijke fossielen in Marokko leert dat de moderne mens minimaal 100.000 jaar ouder is dan tot nu toe gedacht en dat de Hof van Eden, de plaats waar de moderne mens opstond, geheel Afrika is. Als dat juist is, kan de geschiedenis van de mens en daarmee zijn toekomst weer herschreven worden.

Andrew Jones:

De intenties van mensen uit het verleden liggen besloten in objecten en deze objecten hebben hun uitwerking op de mensen in het heden.

That which is made and that which is found have the power to change our perspective on the past, on the present and hence on the future. Abstract painting, with its emphasis on form and colour, gave us a new way of looking at the art of the past. A medieval icon no longer has to be seen solely as a religious object, for the depicted saint can be appreciated as a form in space or as a composition of colour. This changed perception sends in turn new impulses to contemporary art.

The recent find of human fossils in Morocco suggests that modern mankind is at least 100 thousand years older than formerly thought, and that the Garden of Eden, the place where Homo sapiens originated, extends across the whole of Africa. If this is correct, then the history of humanity and hence our view of its future must once again be rewritten.

Both the archaeologist and the artist dig beneath the familiar surface to expose hidden layers. Their researches undermine – in a positive sense – our trusted but never complete reality. They demonstrate a reality (or realities) that is invariably deeper and more comprehensive than expected – economic, political, social and historical. The artist and the archaeologist share (although not in equal measure) their attitude to objects, their fascination with the material and its autonomy, and their dependence on it. The materiality of things and hence also their immateriality determines their work.

Zij delen – maar niet in gelijke mate – hun omgang met objecten, hun fascinatie voor en afhankelijkheid van het materiële. De materialiteit der dingen en daarmee ook de niet-materialiteit bepaalt hun werk.

Kunstenaars transformeren die materialiteit maar al te graag; zij willen er ook aan ontsnappen of haar juist beproeven in al haar mogelijkheden.

Archeologen wichelen de materialiteit der dingen om herkomst, gebruik, inwerking, verandering en betekenis te bepalen. Zij staan aan het andere eind maar beiden ontmoeten elkaar in hun zoektocht naar het wezen van de dingen.

David Lowenthal noemde zijn boek over archeologie The Past is a Foreign Country. Daarin schrijft hij: ‘Het leven is doordrenkt van de herinnering.

We besteden veel van het heden aan het in contact komen of blijven met sommige aspecten van het verleden’. Die onontkoombaarheid van het verleden, van dat wat het heden in al zijn onzichtbaarheid bepaalt, is wat hedendaagse kunstenaars op hun manier ook naar dat verleden trekt. Het is de drang om te weten, om de magneet te vinden die het leven aan het oppervlak zijn richting opdringt.

Voor wie dat weet, is niet alleen het verleden een onbekend land maar ook het heden en de toekomst. Het is in die wetenschap dat kunstenaar en archeoloog elkaar waarlijk ontmoeten.

Artists are only too keen to transform that materiality: they try either to negate it or, contrarily, to experience it in all its possibilities. Archaeologists divine the materiality of things in an effort to establish their origin, use, effect, changes and significance. They and artists stand on opposite sides but meet in the middle in their quest for the essence of things.

David Lowenthal titled his book on archaeology The Past is a Foreign Country.

“Memory pervades life,” he wrote. “We devote much of the present to getting or keeping in touch with some aspects of the past.” This inescapability of the past, of that which determines the present in all its invisibility, is what also attracts contemporary artists to the past in their own way. It is the urge to know, to discover the hidden magnet that exerts its subtle influence on life. Someone who knows that also understands that it is not only the past that is a foreign country, but also the present and the future. It is in this realization that the artist and the archaeologist truly meet.

The intentions of past people are encapsulated in material form, and these material forms will act on people in the present.

THE MATERIALITY OF THE INVISIBLE IN VAN EYCK, MARRES EN BUREAU EUROPA “Net als archeologen leggen kunstenaars het verborgene bloot, dringen door in andere tijden en onderzoeken de onderliggende lagen van onze sociale, maatschappelijke en politieke realiteit” Zoals hedendaagse kunst niet onder een noemer te vangen is, is archeologie meer dan graven naar overblijfselen uit een onbekend verleden. In dit ruimere kader van beide disciplines concentreert zich de tentoonstelling The Materiality of the Invisible, die zich uitspreidt over drie Maastrichtse kunstinstellingen Van Eyck, Marres en Bureau Europa en werk toont van een dertigtal jonge en gevestigde kunstenaars(duo’s). Net als archeologen leggen zij het verborgene bloot, dringen door in andere tijden en onderzoeken de onderliggende lagen van onze sociale, maatschappelijke en politieke realiteit.

De kern van de tentoonstelling wordt uitgemaakt door het werk van zes geselecteerde kunstenaars die de afgelopen jaren op initiatief van de Van Eyck met archeologen hebben samengewerkt binnen het langjarige Europese project NEARCH – New scenarios for a communityinvolved archaeology. Samen met alle grote Europese archeologiefaculteiten en -instituten is de Van Eyck partner van dit project.

Als afsluiting van NEARCH zocht de Van Eyck de verbinding met twee andere Maastrichtse collega-instellingen. Gedrieën bieden zij vanuit hun eigen achtergrond als postacademisch instituut voor talentontwikkeling (Van Eyck), Huis voor Hedendaagse Cultuur (Marres) en platform voor architectuur en design (Bureau Europa) een verrassend beeld van de verbinding en overeenkomsten tussen kunst en archeologie. Hun verwoede pogingen gaan soms gepaard met gekreun, geschraap en windvlagen, maar verder heerst er stilte. Het versterkt de leegte die van het kale landschap uitgaat. Lida Abdul keert voor haar werk regelmatig terug naar haar thuisland Afghanistan dat inmiddels getekend is door decennialange oorlog. Ze refereert aan kwesties als culturele identiteit, migratie en ontheemding in haar films, die in tegenstelling tot de bloederige geschiedenis, dromerig en poëtisch zijn. In What We Saw Upon Awakening voeren de mannen een verloren strijd, maar de arbeid laat zich tegelijkertijd lezen als een daad van verzet. Uiteindelijk wordt er een steen ritueel begraven, net zoals in de Islam het lichaam direct begraven wordt.

Het werk is een symbool van herinnering en nagedachtenis.

Met Guernica Syndrome toont Fernando Sánchez Castillo een haast vergeten en politiek zeer beladen reliek: Azor, het imposante jacht van dictator Franco. Het plezierjacht was vanaf 1949 goed voor luxe vakanties van de familie, maar was ook het toneel van enkele belangrijke politieke bijeenkomsten.

Dit symbool van Franco’s macht werd na zijn dood niet zoals de overige souvenirs van zijn fascistische regime vernietigd, maar is bewaard gebleven. Het veranderde meermalen van eigenaar en deed dienst als theater, een toeristische attractie en was een trekpleister voor neofascisten. In 2011 kocht Sánchez Castillo het 40 meter lange jacht, ontmantelde het en maakte er deze 40 blokken schroot van. Hij behield het materiaal ter nagedachtenis aan de politieke erfenis van Franco in de Spaanse geschiedenis. Ontdaan van zijn oorspronkelijke luister, dient de Azor in Guernica Syndrome als krachtig monument tegen het vergeten.

Oscar Santillan vertelt verhalen met zijn beelden. In zijn werk onderzoekt hij het gebied tussen het mogelijke en onmogelijke, tussen fictie en realiteit. Het zijn kleine interventies die nieuwsgierig maken en de toeschouwer doen raden naar een verhaal. Hiervoor verbindt hij ogenschijnlijk uiteenlopende zaken met elkaar, zoals meteorietstenen en een Hawaii-blouse. Santillan vond namelijk een Hawaii-blouse in een bos en merkte op dat die alle knopen miste. Hij besloot ze op opmerkelijke wijze terug te brengen door meteoriet-gesteente in de vorm van knopen te gieten en deze erop te naaien. Zo zijn twee rondzwervende materies samengebracht: die van planeet Aarde en die uit de ruimte.

Eenmaal gevonden zijn ze zo samengebracht dat ze niet alleen naast elkaar kunnen bestaan, maar elkaar zelfs nodig hebben en nieuwe verbindingen aangaan – zowel materieel als immaterieel.

Lida Abdul What We Saw Upon Awakening, 2006 {Bureau Europa} What We Saw Upon Awakening depicts a group of men trying to overthrow a ruin.

With all their weight, they hang on long white ropes. Groaning, scraping, and wind gusts sometimes accompany their frantic attempts; but further, silence prevails – enhancing the emptiness emanating from the barren landscape. Lida Abdul regularly returns to Afghanistan, her homeland, which bares the evidence of decades of war.

Her films address cultural identity, migration, and displacement and – contrary to the violence of history such topics imply – are wistful and poetic. The protagonists in What We Saw Upon Awakening fight a lost battle; however, their endeavour reads as an act of resistance. Eventually, a stone is ritually buried, drawing comparisons to Islam, where the deceased body is immediately inhumed. The work is a symbol of memory and remembrance.

Fernando Sánchez Castillo Síndrome de Guernica (Guernica Syndrome), 2012 {Bureau Europa} Guernica Syndrome transforms an almost forgotten and politically charged relic: the Azor, the dictator Franco’s impressive yacht.

From 1949, this pleasure yacht was used for his family’s luxury holidays and was also the scene of some important political gatherings. Unlike other symbols of Franco’s fascist regime that were destroyed after his death, the yacht was kept. The yacht has had several owners and also served as a theatre, a tourist attraction, and was a magnet for neo-Fascists. In 2011, Sánchez Castillo bought the 40-metre long yacht, dismantled it, and made 40 blocks of scrap from it. He kept the material as reminder of Franco’s political remnants in Spanish history. Guernica Syndrome strips the Azor of its former splendour to serve as a monument against forgetting.

Oscar Santillan Voyager, 2016 {Marres} Oscar Santillan’s sculptures are vehicles for narrative. His work investigates the area between the potential and impossible and between fact and fiction. His small-scale interventions evoke curiosity, prompting the viewer to imagine a story. To do this, Santillan elicits unlikely connections between found traces. For example, Santillan chanced upon a Hawaiian shirt in a forest and noticed its buttons were missing. By moulding meteorite rocks into buttons and sewing them onto the shirt, two adrift matters are combined: those of Earth and those from space. Once found, they are merged to exist side-by-side and to be dependent on each other, making new connections – both material and immaterial.

Tussen 1984 en 1986 bezocht Marinus Boezem 21 verschillende oude kloostercomplexen van de monnikenorde der Cisterciënzers. Deze monniken leefden volgens de leer van Bernardus van Clairvaux en mediteerden bij voorkeur in het natuurlijke licht dat door de vensters van de Romaanse kloosters naar binnen stroomde. Dit licht heeft Marinus Boezem willen vangen. Op elke locatie richtte hij om 12 uur precies gedurende 3 minuten een vel fotopapier naar de zon. Tijd en plaats zijn een zwart vlak geworden. De plattegronden van de kloosters etste hij in glas. Doordat er tussen de glasplaat en het achterliggende papier ruimte is, verglijden met verloop van de tijd de schaduwen van de plattegrond op het papier.

Mark Manders maakt werk met uiteenlopend materiaal: installaties van klei, houten planken, metaal, gips en brons. Girl Study is een gaaf meisjeshoofd ingeklemd tussen planken, alsof het een antiek Grieks beeld is dat moet worden gestut. Maar het is een imitatie, want in werkelijkheid is het hoofd gemaakt van het veel lichtere epoxy. Manders combineert op associatieve wijze verschillende beeldcomponenten met elkaar. Het geeft zijn werk een poëtisch karakter dat leest als een gedicht over architectuur, schoonheid en de mens.

Lonnie van Brummelen en Siebren de Haan Route Sédentaire, 2001 {Van Eyck} Het kostte Lonnie van Brummelen drie maanden om een gipsen Hermesbeeld van Amsterdam naar de grotten van Lascaux met zijn prehistorische tekeningen in Frankrijk te slepen. De tocht werd vastgelegd door Siebren de Haan op 16mm-film wat resulteerde in een 4,5 uur durende film, die hier samen met de resten van het gipsen beeld getoond wordt. Net als het beeld, vergaat ook de opname; bij elke vertoning slijt de film – waar verder geen kopieën van bestaan – verder weg. Waar we kunst normaal gesproken zo lang en goed mogelijk conserveren en waar nodig restaureren, laten Van Brummelen & De Haan hun werk geleidelijk vergaan, terug naar zijn immateriële oorsprong.

La Lumière Cistercienne Clairvaux (sur Agfa Brovira B.N.312.P.E.), 1985, {Marres} Between 1984 and 1986, Marinus Boezem visited 21 different ancient monastery complexes of the Cistercian monastic order.

These monks lived according to Bernardus Clairvaux’s teachings and meditated preferably in the natural light flowing through the windows of the Romanesque monasteries.

Marinus Boezem wanted to catch this light.

At every location at 12 noon, he exposed a sheet of photo paper to the sun for three minutes. Time and place become a black plane. He etched the plans of the monasteries in glass. The space between the glass sheet and the paper behind it means the floor plan’s shadows falling onto the paper will decrease over time.

Mark Manders Girl Study, 2013 {Van Eyck} Mark Manders works employ a variety of materials: clay, wooden planks, metal, plaster, and bronze. Girl Study is an unblemished girl’s head clamped between planks, like a buttressed antique Greek sculpture.

The head imitates plaster but is in fact epoxy resin. Manders associatively combines different sculptural components, giving the work a poetic character that reads like a verse about architecture, beauty, and humanity.

Route Sédentaire, 2001 {Van Eyck} Lonnie van Brummelen spent three months dragging a plaster sculpture of Hermes from Amsterdam to the Lascaux caves in France – a site of prehistoric drawings.

Siebren de Haan recorded the journey in a 4.5-hour 16mm film, shown here together with the sculpture’s remains. Just like the sculpture, the film is gradually disappearing; every screening erodes the only print of the film, slowly erasing the image. Whereas art is typically conserved, Van Brummelen & De Haan let their work gradually fade to its intangible origins.

DE MATERIALITEIT VAN HET ONZICHTBARE? “Met materie zetten de kunstenaars het onzichtbare in het zichtbare om – en, het is vreemd om te bedenken, scheppen zij tegelijk het onzichtbare”

De titel van de tentoonstelling verwijst naar het gedeelde vermogen van kunstenaars en archeologen om het onzichtbare en dat wat in de verbeelding leeft zichtbaar te maken. Met materie zetten zij het onzichtbare in het zichtbare om – en, het is vreemd om te bedenken, scheppen zij tegelijk het onzichtbare. Een mooi voorbeeld van deze paradox is de klassieke opgraving met een of twee botten losgewoeld uit de aarde. Zeker, de botten zijn zichtbaar, voor sommigen misschien wel akelig zichtbaar, maar voor het oog is daarmee wel alles gezegd. Onzichtbaar blijft wie de mensen waren, wat zij hebben meegemaakt, in wat voor huizen zij woonden, met wie zij verkeerden of zij ooit begeerlijk waren. Eigenlijk kijken wij dus naar het grote niets dat zich voordoet als iets tastbaars.

Michael Shanks:

De verbeelding en de wetenschappelijke analyse kunnen weliswaar veel lacunes opvullen met dateringsmethoden, dna-analyses en beschrijvingen van de context. Maar ergens houdt het nabijkomen op – om over te gaan in het onzichtbare niets. De dichter Joseph Brodsky formuleerde die afstand als volgt: ‘We bekijken de oudheid alsof die uit het niets is gekomen. Ons perspectief is vergelijkbaar met hoe een naburig melkwegstelsel naar ons zou kijken; in het beste geval komt het neer op een solipsistische fantasie, op een visioen.’

Voor kunstenaars is de materialiteit van het onzichtbare hun dagelijkse strijd. Zij moeten maken wat er niet was, en als het kunstwerk er is verwijst het naar wat onzichtbaar is. Dat klinkt mogelijk als abracadabra maar is met een eenvoudig voorbeeld te verhelderen. De boom op het schilderij zien wij alleen op doek, de werkelijke boom is er niet – voor zover die ooit bestaan heeft. De boom op het schilderij kan een fantasie zijn of een composiet, samengesteld uit de vele bomen die de kunstenaar heeft gezien.

Het materiële onderwerp van het kunstwerk is uit beeld verdwenen; het kunstwerk belichaamt het onzichtbare. Uiteindelijk zijn ook de esthetische, artistieke, morele en maatschappelijke waarden van het kunstwerk immaterieel: zij bestaan in onze geest. Het is als wat dichter Wallace Stevens van de rivier zegt: ‘Zij is niet meer te zien onder de voorstellingen die erover vertellen’.

De archeologische verbeelding is een competentie van de metafysische detective die constant twijfelt, geruchten toetst aan materiële getuigenissen en vraagtekens plaatst bij de representatievormen die ons in staat stellen het verleden te onderzoeken.

Lex ter Braak THE MATERIALITY OF THE INVISIBLE? “Artists employ material means to make the invisible palpable; curiously, however, they also open up a new sphere of invisibility” The exhibition title refers to the mutual capability of artists and archaeologists to bring to life things that have long been hidden or only imagined. They employ material means to make the invisible palpable; curiously, however, they also open up a new sphere of invisibility.

This paradox is well illustrated by a classic archaeological dig in which some pieces of human bone are unearthed. The fragments are themselves now visible ‒ – sometimes chillingly so – yet that is barely the beginning of a story that is still invisible to the eye. We may speculate who these people were, how they lived and died, what kind of shelter formed their home, who were their companions or their lovers. In reality we face a huge vacuum of potential knowledge for which the scanty material vestiges form the only tangible starting point.

A combination of imagination and scientific analysis can of course fill in some of the gaps of tangibility: physical and chemical dating methods, DNA analysis and contextualization. But the expanded knowledge soon tails off into the vast unknown. The poet Joseph Brodsky summed up this vastness as follows: “We look at antiquity as if out of nowhere.

Our vantage point is similar to that of an adjacent galaxy’s view of ourselves; it boils down, at best, to a solipsistic fantasy, to a vision.”

For artists, to master the “materiality of the invisible” is their daily endeavour.

They must create something that did not previously exist and, once the work of art is realized, it must refer to something invisible. This may sound arcane but a simple example will shed light on it. We see a tree in a painting in prosaic reality as marks on a canvas, yet the depicted tree is itself absent and perhaps never even existed – it could be a fantasy or a composite of the many trees the artist has seen.

The material subject of the artwork has vanished from view; the work embodies the invisible. Ultimately, the aesthetic, artistic, moral and social values of the work of art are equally immaterial. They exist in our mind. As the poet Wallace Stevens said of a river, “It is not to be seen beneath the appearances that tell of it.”

Michael Shanks:

The archaeological imagination is a faculty of the metaphysical detective, constantly doubting, balancing report against material witness, questioning the forms of representation that allow us to inquire of the past.

In de installaties, beelden en het mixed media werk van Leyla Cárdenas (CO, 1975) roepen stedelijke ruïnes en stadslandschappen sociale transformatie en historische herinnering op. Voor haar NEARCH-project beschouwt zij tijd en ruimte vanuit een archeologisch standpunt. Cárdenas hanteert stratigrafische technieken op een persoonlijke manier om de lagen van de tijd op een non-lineaire manier met elkaar te verbinden. Ze maakt zichtbaar wat zich onder het oppervlak bevindt; lagen van samenhang (en daarmee van betekenis) vallen uit elkaar, rekken uit en gaan nieuwe verbindingen aan. Haar werk en het materiaal waaruit het bestaat is als een palimpsest, die het heden, verleden en de toekomst in zich draagt.

Leyla Cárdenas’ (CO, 1975) installations, sculptures, and mixed media work recall urban ruins and urban landscapes as a reminder of social transformation and history. For her NEARCH project, she considers time and space from an archaeological perspective. By using stratigraphic techniques in a personal way, Cárdenas connects layers of time in a nonlinear manner. She brings to the surface layers of cohesion (and thus meaning) that unravel, disseminate, and establish new connections. Her work and its matter is like a palimpsest, layering the past, present, and future.

Joey Bryniarska & Martin Westwood (GB, 1981/1969) zijn geïnteresseerd in hoe historische artefacten worden geproduceerd, gemedieerd en beheerd en hoe hun historische waarde wordt bepaald.

Gebruikmakend van (stijl)middelen uit het reisverslag, het Middeleeuwse verluchte manuscript en het diagram, verbinden zij in hun werk verschillende onderzoeksgebieden en artistieke praktijken met elkaar. De zolder van een gotische kathedraal, een vervuilde afvalberg op een Zweedse archipel en de onthoofding van een (aankomende) heilige, zijn onderwerp van hun onderzoek naar hagiografische, architectonische, administratieve, anekdotische en fysiologische motieven.

Tegelijk schetsen zij zo een beeld van transdisciplinaire ontmoetingen.

Joey Bryniarska & Martin Westwood (GB, 1981/1969) are interested in how historical artefacts are produced, mediated, and managed and how their historical value is determined. Using (style) references to the travelogue, medieval illuminated manuscripts, and the diagram, their work connects different research interests and artistic practices. The attic of a gothic cathedral, a contaminated spoil heap on a Swedish archipelago, and the decapitation of a (soon to be) saint are subjects of their research into hagiographic, architectural, administrative, anecdotal, and physiological motifs. In doing so, they outline an image of transdisciplinary encounters.

The Promised Land

Giuseppe Licari (IT, 1980) onderzoekt het ons omringende landschap, een omgeving die wordt beïnvloed door socio-economische, culturele en politieke praktijken. In The Materiality of the Invisible laat hij werk zien uit zijn project Schlak; ontstaan in Belval, Luxemburg, waar nieuwe landschappen zijn ontstaan. Deze door de mens geschapen omgeving is opgebouwd uit zogenaamd slak – een bijproduct van de vroegere staalindustrie. In Licari’s fotoserie transformeert deze omgeving tot een landschap van onwereldse pracht en kostbaarheid. Voor zijn NEARCH -residency aan de Van Eyck verdiept Licari zich onder andere in het industriële afval dat in de provincie Limburg tot cultureel erfgoed is verworden.

Giuseppe Licari (IT, 1980) explores our surrounding landscapes: an environment influenced by socio-economic, cultural, and political practices. In The Materiality of the Invisible, he shows work from his Schlak project, which originated in Belval, Luxembourg, where new landscapes of industrial deposits have emerged. This human-created environment is made from slag stone (schlak) – a by-product of the former steel industry. In Licari’s photo series, this environment transforms into a landscape of magnificent beauty and splendour. For his current NEARCH residency at the Van Eyck, Licari examines, among other things, the industrial waste that has turned into cultural heritage in the province of Limburg.

Hij hanteert archeologische methoden zoals sequentiële organisatie en scalaire interactie en zoekt de grenzen van hun conceptuele toepassingen: uiteenlopende grootheden en eenheden zet hij naast elkaar zoals het lichaam en het landschap, stenen instrumenten en discours, microscopische en kosmologische beweging. For The Materiality of the Invisible, Wilson has made films and installations based on his extensive visits to archaeological sites. These sites not only include archaeological excavations but also laboratories, offices, archives, texts, and museums. In his approach, archaeology is both a methodology and an apparatus that makes the whole of the discipline visible.

Rossella Biscotti (IT, 1978) observeerde op de Turkse archeologische site Çatalhöyük niet datgene dat wordt opgegraven maar de sociologische en politieke werkelijkheid van een dergelijk groot opgezet ‘dig project’. Zij legde op film en in audio de gemeenschap van archeologen vast, hun routinematige handelingen, de facilitaire diensten eromheen, de politieke discussie tussen de verschillende belanghebbende EU-landen en de Turkse staat.

Rossella Biscotti (IT, 1978) observed not what is being excavated on the Turkish archaeological site Çatalhöyük but the sociological and political reality of such a largescale dig project. She used film and audio to document the archaeologist community and their routine operations, the facilitation services around it, the political discussion with the various stakeholders from EU countries, and the Turkish state.

Iratxe Jaio en Klaas van Gorkum (ES 1976, NL, 1975) bekommeren zich om het lot van opgegraven, historische artefacten waarvan de status – door hun onduidelijke herkomst, vermoedens van vervalsing of door een algeheel gebrek aan begrip van hun betekenis – nog bepaald moet worden. Ze werkten aan drie projecten binnen NEARCH. In The Materiality of the Invisible presenteren zij hun onderzoek naar fascistische monumenten die nog steeds over heel Spanje verspreid verspreid zijn. Ze tonen een replica van een stèle opgericht ter herinnering aan drie Duitse soldaten uit het Condor Legion waarvan de namen eraf zijn gehouwen door onbekenden.

Het tweede project is een forensisch onderzoek van inscripties (teksten en tekeningen) op Romeinse potscherven die in Baskenland zijn ontdekt, waarvan de vermeende vervalsing het onderwerp is van een aanhoudend polemisch geschil.

Daarnaast deden zij onderzoek naar de overblijfselen van dertien soldaten – van beide strijdende partijen – uit de Spaanse Burgeroorlog, voor wie, nu het archeologische onderzoek is afgerond, een laatste passende bestemming moet worden gezocht. In oktober organiseren Jaio en Van Gorkum een rondetafelgesprek over dit project La ruta más larga in Madrid.

Iratxe Jaio and Klaas van Gorkum (ES 1976, NL, 1975) are concerned with the fate of excavated historical artefacts whose status – due to their unclear origin, suspected forgery, or an overall lack of understanding of their meaning – has yet to be determined. They worked on three projects for NEARCH. For The Materiality of the Invisible, they present a replica stele erected in memory of three German soldiers from the Condor Legion whose names have been anonymously removed, thus questioning how to deal with the fascist monuments still spread throughout Spain.

The second project is a forensic investigation of inscriptions (texts and drawings) on shards of Roman pottery discovered in Basque Country, whose alleged counterfeiting is the subject of an ongoing and polemical dispute.

Additionally, they investigated the remains of thirteen Spanish Civil War soldiers – from both parties – for whom, after the archaeological research has been completed, a last suitable destination has to be found. In October, Jaio and Van Gorkum will organize a round table about the La ruta más larga project in Madrid.

NEARCH — EEN EUROPEES SAMENWERKINGSPROJECT “Het verleden ontsluiten is geen overbodige luxe in een tijd waarin het hier en nu dominant is” Onder de noemer van dit op het eerste gezicht vreemde woord werkte de Van Eyck vijf fantastische jaren samen met archeologen uit heel Europa. NEARCH is een samentrekking van New Archaeology en New Approaches to Archaeology. Betekenissen die de inzet van de samenwerking goed dekken: het gezamenlijk verkennen van nieuwe wegen om het verleden anders te benaderen en te ontsluiten. Dat is geen overbodige luxe in een tijd waarin het hier en nu dominant is, beleving het uitgangspunt voor kennis is en mensen op drift een andere verhouding met het/ hun verleden hebben.

Binnen NEARCH is daar door de archeologen verschillend op ingegaan. De Van Eyck ontwikkelde het project The Materiality of the Invisible. Uitgangspunt voor dit project zijn vragen als: wat kunnen archeologen van de verbeeldingskracht en onderzoeksmethoden van kunstenaars leren, wat hebben de artistieke en de ‘archeologische verbeelding’ (Michael Shanks) met elkaar gemeen, kan de betrok-

kenheid van de kunstenaar op de archeologische site nieuwe observaties opleveren, kan de kunstenaar met zijn werk en de geschiedenis van het zichtbaar maken (de presentatie) een stimulans zijn voor nieuwe archeologische presentatiemodellen?

Om dit project te realiseren heeft de Van Eyck een internationale Open Call uit doen gaan waar bijna driehonderd kunstenaars op hebben gereageerd.

Samen met de archeologische partners heeft de Van Eyck hier vijf kunstenaars(duo’s) uit geselecteerd: Leyla Cárdenas (CO), Joey Bryniarska & Martin Westwood (GB), Rossella Biscotti (IT), Iratxe Jaio & Klaas van Gorkum (ES/ NL), Matthew C. Wilson (VS).

Vanaf 2015 werkten zij elk met hun eigen twee archeologische partners samen, dat wil zeggen dat zij archeologische sites bezochten, spraken over het onderzoek, de werkwijze, de methodes. Tegelijk zochten zij hun eigen wegen en ontwikkelden ideeën voor nieuw werk. In de loop van de tijd hebben zij dat op de Van Eyck verder uitgewerkt en zijn de resultaten nu te zien in de tentoonstelling The Materiality of the Invisible.

NEARCH LIMBURG

EAA CONFERENTIE IN MAASTRICHT

De Provincie Limburg heeft zich in 2017 met NEARCH verbonden door samen met de Van Eyck Giuseppe Licari (IT) te selecteren voor een residency aan de Van Eyck. Hij zal gedurende een jaar in samenwerking met enkele erfgoedbeheerders uit Limburg werk ontwikkelen met een nieuw perspectief op beheer, presentatie en publieke omgang van Limburgs erfgoed. Werk van Giuseppe Licari is opgenomen in The Materiality of the Invisible.

Elk jaar houdt The European Association of Archaeologists in een Europese stad haar jaarvergadering in de vorm van een meerdaags vaksymposium.

Meer dan 2500 archeologen van over de hele werelds komen daar naartoe – allereerst om zich op de hoogte te stellen van de nieuwste ontwikkelingen in hun vakgebied. Daarnaast reserveren zij ook extra dagen voor- en achteraf om het erfgoed in de omgeving van de plaats van samenkomst te bezoeken.

MATERIALITY OF THE INVISIBLE II Dit jaar wordt deze conferentie in Maastricht gehouden (van 30 augustus tot en met 3 september). Voor de programmacommissie van de EAA is NEARCH en de tentoonstelling The Materiality of the Invisible de aanleiding geweest om kunst en archeologie als een van de thema’s van het congres op te voeren. De NEARCH-kunstenaars zullen op donderdag 31 augustus met hen in de Van Eyck, Marres en Bureau Europa over hun werk in gesprek gaan. De opening van The Materiality of the Invisible vindt op de vooravond van het congres plaats.

Voor de trouwe bezoeker van de Van Eyck is The Materiality of the Invisible geen onbekende titel. In de zomer van 2016 was daar de tentoonstelling The Materiality of the Invisible I te zien met werk van Van Eyck deelnemers Dimitrios Rentoumis, Imran Channa en Charlotte Koenen. Deze tentoonstelling was bedoeld als de prelude op de huidige tentoonstelling The Materiality of the Invisible (die dus eigenlijk nummer II had moeten krijgen).

Kunst als archeologie en archeologie als kunst impliceert de belofte van interactie tussen deze beide gebieden waarmee we, op verschillende manieren, de ‘toestand van de mens’ proberen te onderzoeken om ons te verhouden tot en commentaar te geven op wat het betekent om mens te zijn. Naar mijn mening krijgt het mysterie van hoe wij tot het besef zijn gekomen van onze plaats, de plaats van ieder van ons, in deze verwarrende wereld, grote urgentie wanneer wij de werken van hedendaagse kunstenaars beschouwen.

NEARCH LIMBURG

The Province of Limburg has associated itself with NEARCH in 2017 by selecting (together with the Van Eyck) Giuseppe Licari (IT) for a residency at the Van Eyck. He will make work during his resident year in collaboration with several Limburg heritage managers, with the aim of opening up a new perspective on the management, presentation and public access to the heritage of the Province. Work by Giuseppe Licari is included in The Materiality of the Invisible.

EAA CONFERENCE IN MAASTRICHT The European Association of Archaeologists holds its annual conference in a different European city each year, in the form of a multi-day professional symposium. Over 2,500 archaeologists from all over the world attend the conference, primarily to acquaint themselves with the latest developments in their discipline. A few additional days are reserved before and afterwards to allow for visits to heritage sites in the locality of the conference.

Art as archaeology and archaeology as art, carries with it the promise of interactions between both fields, in both of which, in different ways, we seek to investigate the ‘human condition’ – to engage with and to comment upon what it is to be human. I have found that the enigma of how we come to understand our place, the place of each of us, in this bewildering world is imbued with great immediacy as we contemplate the works that contemporary artists (…) have created.

MATERIALITY OF THE INVISIBLE II This year’s annual conference is taking place in Maastricht (from 30 August to 3 September).

NEARCH and the exhibition The Materiality of the Invisible has motivated the EAA programming committee to treat art and archaeology as one of its conference themes. The NEARCH artists will engage in dialogue with them about their work in the Van Eyck, Marres and Bureau Europa on Thursday 31 August. The opening of The Materiality of the Invisible will take place on the evening before the start of the conference.

Regular visitors to the Van Eyck will no doubt find a familiar ring to the title The Materiality of the Invisible. In the summer of 2016, Van Eyck participants Dimitrios Rentoumis, Imran Channa and Charlotte Koenen exhibited work in The Materiality of the Invisible I. The latter was intended as a prelude to the present exhibition (which should in theory have the title The Materiality of the Invisible II).
