LETTER FROM OUR FOUNDER & CEO
Shalini Mahtani
Shukr: A Decade of Caring, Collaboration, and Impact As we celebrate 10 years of The Zubin Foundation, one word comes to mind: Shukur - the word for gratitude in Hindi and Urdu. Over the past decade, we have remained committed to our mission of reducing suffering and providing opportunities for Hong Kong's marginalised ethnically diverse communities. We knew the challenges were significant. Too many individuals and families were facing barriers to education, employment, healthcare and social support. Too many were navigating these challenges unseen and unheard. What we did not know then was how much could be achieved when communities - including government, NGO partners, volunteers, funders and service users - come together with a shared purpose of improving lives.
Two Profound Contributions to Hong Kong Looking back, I believe we have made two important contributions to Hong Kong. First, we have provided direct support to individuals facing hardship, helping them navigate challenges ranging from mental health and domestic violence to education, employment and elderly care. Second, we have amplified the voices and representation of ethnically diverse communities through advocacy, research and leadership development.

Lives Changed, Futures Shaped While impact can be measured in numbers, it is ultimately reflected in people. It is seen in women rebuilding their lives with confidence and dignity through support groups. In young people pursuing higher education and meaningful careers via scholarships. In families and children finding support during difficult times with counselling. And in elderly community members finding friendship, connection and belonging through weekly gatherings. I am proud of what we have achieved together, but even more proud of the resilience, courage and determination shown by the communities we serve. They continue to inspire us every day.
Shukur - Thank You This anniversary is also an opportunity to say thank you. To my team, board members, committee members, government, donors, NGO partners, volunteers and supporters: your generosity and trust have made every achievement possible. As we begin our next chapter, we remain hopeful for a future where every person in Hong Kong can thrive, regardless of ethnicity or background. Thank you for walking this journey with us. Shukur, Shukur, Shukur. Shalini Mahtani, MH, MBE

I came to counselling to better manage my emotions and heal from painful experiences. Counselling taught me to recognise my triggers and use grounding and breathing techniques to manage anxiety and stay calm. These strategies became so effective that even my friends would remind me to use them when I felt overwhelmed. Despite periods of severe depression and anxiety, counselling helped me seek help, never give up, and pursue goals that once felt impossible. Having a counsellor, who understood my culture and could speak Urdu when needed, made a big difference. Most importantly, counselling gave me the courage to be happy again.
We equip social workers, mental health practitioners, frontline staff of NGOs, and university students with understanding of the unique mental health challenges of our community. At the same time, our Youth Mental Health Ambassadors, young people living across Hong Kong, extend this impact by promoting mental well-being and selfcare in their wider community.

Thank you for all the help with regards to my mental health. Thanks to you, I have been applying these methods to myself whenever I am feeling anxious. It was rather mindful compared to my previous method of crying with no hope for the future. Before our sessions, I was afraid of holidays because of the intrusive thoughts. Now, I am much more calm during my holiday break, and the intrusive thoughts do not bother me as much anymore.

The support I received from The Zubin Foundation during job hunting was invaluable. Finding a full-time position was challenging because of high competition and my lack of local experience. Participating in the Life Skills Programme, I actively sought guidance from mentors and attended workshops focused on resume writing and interview preparation. I gained the confidence to present myself professionally. I am very grateful to The Zubin Foundation as their support gave me both the skills and confidence to succeed.

I have been living in Hong Kong for the past six years and often felt lost, unheard, and emotionally overwhelmed. Coming to the Zubin Foundation was a turning point in my life. The support, guidance, and care I received gave me clarity and strength. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Mira. She listened with patience, understood my situation without judgment, and supported me emotionally. Her kindness, empathy, and dedication gave me confidence and hope. Story Spotlight Isolation can have a profound impact on well-being, particularly for women who spend much of their time at home with limited opportunities for social interaction. Through our weekly Chai Gatherings, women find friendship, support, and a welcoming community where they can connect with others and build confidence. One participant shares her experience:
I enjoy attending the weekly Chai Gathering with my friends. It is a wonderful opportunity for me to meet new people, take part in arts and crafts, join outings, and enjoy many other activities. The gatherings help me relax, laugh with friends, and take a break from my personal responsibilities. Sharing tea with the ladies is always enjoyable and makes me feel happy. The Zubin Foundation was the first NGO I joined. One of my Nepali friends introduced me to the Foundation. Before joining, I often felt bored at home because everyone else went to work and I was left alone. Sometimes I felt very sad and felt I had nothing meaningful to do. Since joining the Zubin Foundation, I have become much happier and more confident. I look forward to every Friday because I know I will be able to attend the Chai Pinki Rani Gathering sessions, spend time with friends, and participate in interesting activities. Being part of the 52-year-old Indian woman attended Chai Gatherings Foundation has made a positive difference in my life and has given me a sense of belonging and purpose.

The volunteering experience with the children has been meaningful and fulfilling. By spending 1 hour per week with them, a child has the chance to catch up with English, Chinese and Mathematics, which he misses due to regular hospital visits. I believe that equipping children with health impairments with necessary knowledge for them to survive will enrich their lives and provide opportunities for them to see our harmonious society and world. Karmen a working professional in the marketing field in Hong Kong and a volunteer for Children’s Activities
Working with children with special health needs at The Zubin Foundation has been an incredibly inspiring experience. At first, I thought I would feel overwhelmed knowing they were living with life-limiting conditions. But when we were together, that faded into the background. Our sessions simply became a space where they could be themselves — without academic pressure or the constant cycle of medical appointments. Some of them had missed a lot of school and were far behind, which felt daunting at the beginning. Yet over time, I saw their confidence grow, and their curiosity and personalities shine through. Being part of their learning and play, even in small ways, has been deeply meaningful. I’m truly grateful to have contributed to a project that makes a real difference in their lives.

Service Spotlight: End-of-Life Children’s Service Our End-of-Life Children's Service provides specialised care and compassionate guidance for children living with life-limiting conditions and their families. From emotional support and care planning to memory-making opportunities, we work with generous volunteers to help families navigate an incredibly difficult time with strength and reassurance. This year, our team has continued to stand alongside families, ensuring children receive person-centred care while helping parents and siblings feel supported throughout their journey. Together, we create moments that matter, memories that endure, and compassionate care when it is needed most.
At the Zubin’s Family Centre in the Yau Tsim Mong District, we provide a wide variety of services and activities. These include storytelling, socio-emotional support workshops, pastoral and academic support for children at the end of life and distribute pre-loved books to the community.

I very much enjoy the elderly events I participate in at Zubin’s Family Centre. We view the Zubin’s Family Centre as a helpful resource and support centre, as we receive a significant amount of valuable information for elderly people. We were engaged in many interesting & fun activities, chair yoga and games that required our physical participation, entertainment, and fabulous regular Friday events. I also attended Cantonese lessons, although I found learning a new language a bit challenging at this age, I liked that I got to meet my friends and learn together. I enjoyed Bingo and arts and crafts the most. I was able to meet numerous people of my age after I started visiting this Centre.
