Your Community Leaders Listening To You and For You in 2022

Thank you to everyone who attended the Community Dialogs in 2022!

In March, attendees responded to questions focused on Zion and community, which led to

June, where the focus was on how we could get to know our community, and how our community could better understand and address the issue of truancy in our schools, which led to

August, when leaders inspected the decommissioned Zion Nuclear Power Generating Plant for a complete understanding of the steps required to return control of the land to the community, then there was

October, where attendees broke the ice, and then asked questions of their community leaders.

Our community asks great questions, questions that need thoughtful, researched, responsive answers. Be on the lookout for a video series launch on YouTube soon! The deep dive into these questions, with answers from those closest to the concern, will help us communicate more effectively.

Together, we are writing our own history, asking community-centered questions, and developing solutions that strengthen us. We are all in this together!

ZION LEADERS ZION QUARTERLY | WINTER 2023 3

PLEASE join us on Saturday, October 15th for our next community dialogue –working together to make Zion all it can be!

Carta Del Alcalde Billy McKinney

Welcome to the beautiful City of Zion! A city with a historic past and dynamic future! Whether you are a business owner, resident or just stopping by for a visit, we are excited to have you here.

Zion is situated halfway between the cities of Chicago and Milwaukee on the Illinois-Wisconsin border, which makes visiting us by bike, train or the interstate easy. We are proud to be the home to the Illinois Beach State Park (the third highest tourist attraction in the State of Illinois) and Illinois Beach Hotel, the only hotel in the state that is located on the lakefront.

Whatever brings you to Zion we hope you have a safe and enjoyable experience. I want to thank all of our residents for their support, trust and pride they show in our community.

And to our visitors, please come see us again, soon. I am sure you will agree, Zion is a great place to live, work and play.

Warmest Regards

Billy McKinney

Mayor

Billy McKinney

If you are wondering if you need a carbon monoxide detector, the answer is ‘yes!’ Every home with at least one fuel-burning appliance/ heater, attached garage or fireplace should have a carbon monoxide detector installed. The detector works to alert you that the poisonous gas is somewhere in the home.

Sometimes called the “silent killer,” carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless poisonous gas that can be lethal when inhaled. When the gas is inhaled, carbon monoxide inhibits the blood’s capacity to carry oxygen. This dangerous gas can be emitted from burning fuels such as propane, natural gas, oil, wood, or gasoline. These gases can be released from normal household items such as your furnace, clothes dryer, water heater, chimney, or even portable fuel-burning space heater. Because of the dangerous nature of carbon monoxide, it’s important to have a properly functioning carbon monoxide detector installed in your home.

As winter approaches, here are a few suggestions to keep in mind:

• Be a good neighbor. Clear snow and ice from sidewalks as soon as possible after a snowfall to ensure that they are a safe for all residents and lend a hand to those who may not be physically able to shovel.

• Keep children safe – don’t let them play or build snow forts in the snow banks at the side of the road.

• DO NOT place your garbage or recycle boxes on top of snow banks. If possible, place them on your drive way near the edge of the road.

• Sometimes the City receives noise complaints from residents regarding snow plowing operations. Regretfully, there is no way to avoid this problem. Snow removal operations are undertaken day and night in order to quickly and efficiently provide motorists and pedestrians a clean passage.

MEET OUR FIRE CHIEF | CONOZCA A NUESTRO JEFE DE BOMBEROS

December, January and February are the peak months for heating fires with space heaters being the type of equipment most often involved in home heating equipment fires. To keep your family and home safe from fire this winter season:

• Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heaters.

• Have a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.

• Never use your oven to heat your home.

• Always use the right kind of fuel for fuel burning space heaters.

• Test smoke alarms at least once a month.

• Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.

• Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room.

A letter from your Zion Assessor, Colette Davis

Una carta de su Asesora de Zion, Colette Davis

Saludos,

Greetings,

We hope you had a great Summer! As we went through the appeal process, a few things stuck out to me that I wanted to share with you. The blue notice mailed out is an annual notice of the Assessed value of your home or property. We are required by law to determine this value each year and disclose it to you for review in advance of the next tax cycle We assess at 1/3 or 3333 of the market value of your property. That value is determined using the last 3 years of sales. It is your opportunity to review the information we have on record is true and correct. If you feel that there are errors, that would be the time to contact us and have a discussion. You also have the right to dispute/appeal this Assessment information through a hearing with the Board of Review The instructions for that are listed on the notice and also on our website. Although this value is part of what determines your tax bill, you would NOT appeal your taxes through this hearing. There is a 30 day timeframe for you to complete this from the date it is published.

NEEDS TO BE UPDATED WITH CURRENT INFORMATION

Fall is approaching, we are looking forward to some great events out in the community Please reach out to us if you would like us to educate your organization or have suggestions for topics of discussion. As always, we want to ensure you have a clear understanding of the assessment process.Lastly, please follow us on Facebook for more PTT- Property Tax Tips

Kindest regards,

Saludos cordiales,

Colette Davis

Coalition for Healthy Communities

Last issue, we shared one of the core tenets of the Coalition; to create a community without barriers; that is an enormous mission. We need your help! We are looking for board members and volunteers that are dedicated to the community and willing to work on solutions to move the community forward.

For this issue, we wanted to share our belief statement. It's important that our values and priorities align so that we can create the best experience for board members, volunteers, and the community alike. Please review the belief statement shared below.

Belief Statement – The Coalition for Healthy Communities believes the following statements to be true about our organization. These beliefs, in conjunction with the Coalition’s mission: “Leading our community in a collaborative effort to improve identified health, wellness, and social issues,” guide our efforts.

1. We believe that everyone in our community has the ability and the responsibility to improve our community.

2. We believe we can do more together than we could ever do alone.

3. We believe that everyone deserves to be safe where they live, work and play.

4. We believe that everyone in our community has something important to say, and they deserve to be listened to with respect.

5. We believe that our community works best when everyone is empowered and is an active participant.

6. We believe that the diversity in our community is part of what makes it unique.

7. We believe that equal opportunities for housing, employment, recreation, fitness, wellness, education and leisure should be available for everyone in our community.

Now Read it Again slowly and see which one most aligns with your vision for the community. Then visit us at www.zbchc.com to learn more. If you have additional questions/feedback, we'd love to hear from you at info@zbchc.com
