Your Zion Leaders are working together! In August, they toured the decommissioned nuclear power plant with Constellation Energy Senior Staff and EnergySolutions Vice Presidents. The intention of the tour and conversation was to get a better understanding of the project and all the safety measures that are in place and build relationships so that everyone can work together in considering the future of that site.
PLEASE join us on Saturday, October 15th for our next community dialogue –working together to make Zion all it can be!

CITY OF ZION – ZION TOWNSHIP – ZBTHS D126 – Zion D6 LIBRARY – PARK DISTRICT – POLICE – FIRE
Thank you Marilyn Krieger for your years of dedication to the Zion Park District.
Congratulations on your retirement.
Welcome to the team, Eric Bradley, the new Zion Park District Director. (Seen here with Christine Wertman, Community Relations Manager).
The Zion Community stands HP strong with Zion 6 Superintendent Dr. Keely Roberts and her family. Our hearts and prayers are offered up daily.
Welcome to the beautiful City of Zion! Our City is making subtle changes to continue to be a great place to live, work, play and visit. After two years of managing the pandemic, our residents were able to enjoy an incredible night of entertainment during the 4th of July celebration hosted by the Zion Park District. It was an evening that reminded me of my years growing up in Zion at a time in which everyone enjoyed and took advantage of one of our most precious and important resources, the Zion Park District.
After years of pursuing Starbucks to be a part of our business community, there is a store currently under construction at the corner of 173 and Green Bay Road next to the CVS store. This new attraction promises to entice more businesses to seek out that area as a home as evidenced by the conversations we had with other businesses while attending the ICSC retail conference in Las Vegas. In addition, the Popeye’s franchise should be breaking ground soon on the site of the Dunes Theater. As stated in the past, we will continue to focus on growth through economic development in all areas of our city from a residential and commercial perspective. To that end, halfway through 2022, we have issued twelve (12) retail business licenses and eight (8) new home based businesses.
From a public safety perspective, our Police Department continues to be creative and implement new strategies along with technology to assist in reducing crime in the City of Zion. However, we need the help of our residents to help us curb crime throughout our community. The Zion Police Department website offers ways for residents to contact them anonymously to report suspicious activities and people that you consider a threat to you or your surrounding neighbors. Please contact the nonemergency number for the ZPD for more information.
As we continue to improve our city, we ask that you continue working with us to keep our city safe and clean and provide us with the input we need to build a bright future for our community. Please attend our next quarterly meeting of the Zion Leaders Group in October at Zion-Benton Township High School to share your concerns about our community, as well as your ideas as to how we can improve Zion and make it a model community for others to emulate.
Warm regards,
Saludos cordiales, Billy McKinney

As Fall approaches and the weather begins to change, consider “adopting a grate” in order to make sure the grates stay clear from leaves & debris. They only have one street sweeper for the entire City and they are short staffed in both the Water and Street Department and handle a lot of main breaks this time of year. Keeping the grates clear can help prevent flooding in the streets and will allow the Water and Street Department staff to address more pressing matters.

Fall is just around the corner: time to get your house in shape for the cooler months ahead. Although autumn can be one of the busiest seasons for homeowners preparing for winter, it’s also the best time to take advantage of the moderate weather to repair any damages before the first frost sets in. Here are some home maintenance tips that will keep your home running in peak condition all winter long:
• Check foundation for cracks and caulk around the areas where masonry meets siding, where pipes or wires enter the house, and around the windows and door frames to prevent heat from escaping.
• Make sure the roof is in good shape. Inspect for missing and loose shingles. For safety’s sake, have a licensed, certified roofing professional check the condition of your roof.
• Have your heating system checked by a licensed heating contractor. Heating systems will use fuel more efficiently, last longer and have fewer problems if properly serviced.

Collection of landscape and yard waste began April 1st and will run through November 30th. Tree branches or brush not placed in the thirty-two (32) gallon container or Kraft-type paper bag must be bound with biodegradable string or twine not more than four (4) feet in length, eighteen (18) inches in diameter and weighing not more than fifty (50) pounds. Branches are not to be more than two (2) inches in diameter per branch.
It may be hard to believe, but cooler weather is upon us, which means most of us will be firing up our furnaces! It is recommended that a professional inspects and cleans your furnace each year, and it is very important to make sure there are working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on each level of your home. Many current alarms are equipped as both smoke and carbon monoxide, so please be on the lookout for those!
Some also use space heaters to warm their rooms – this is ok, as long as they are used safely. Please keep anything that may catch fire at least three feet from the heater, and it is best to use a heater equipped with a safety switch that turns it off if it tips over.

If you are planning a vacation, be sure to take steps to keep your home safe
while you’re away. An empty house is like an open invitation to burglars. To keep your house looking occupied:
- Don’t put travel plans on social media. Post your pictures and experiences once you’ve returned.
- Stop the newspaper and mail – or ask a trusted neighbor to pick them up
- Ask a friend to park in your driveway occasionally so there’s activity at your house
- Put at least one light in your house on a timer
- Make sure your lawn stays trimmed

Why was my garbage not picked up?
Residents should have garbage and recycling carts placed in their correct location by 6:00am on their collection day. For example, if your home has an alley, the carts should be placed in the alley. If you do not have an alley, the carts should be placed curbside in the front of your home. Occasionally a driver will miss a cart. If this happens, please contact Waste Management at 847-623-3870 to notify them.

Greetings,
We hope you had a great Summer! As we went through the appeal process, a few things stuck out to me that I wanted to share with you. The blue notice mailed out is an annual notice of the Assessed value of your home or property. We are required by law to determine this value each year and disclose it to you for review in advance of the next tax cycle We assess at 1/3 or 3333 of the market value of your property. That value is determined using the last 3 years of sales. It is your opportunity to review the information we have on record is true and correct. If you feel that there are errors, that would be the time to contact us and have a discussion. You also have the right to dispute/appeal this Assessment information through a hearing with the Board of Review The instructions for that are listed on the notice and also on our website. Although this value is part of what determines your tax bill, you would NOT appeal your taxes through this hearing. There is a 30 day timeframe for you to complete this from the date it is published.
Fall is approaching, we are looking forward to some great events out in the community Please reach out to us if you would like us to educate your organization or have suggestions for topics of discussion. As always, we want to ensure you have a clear understanding of the assessment process.Lastly, please follow us on Facebook for more PTT- Property Tax Tips
Kindest regards,
Colette Davis C.I.A.OSaludos,
Saludos cordiales,
Colette Davis C I A O
From playgrounds to paint, we are working to make each student’s experience in, and outside, the classroom better than ever.
AROUND THE DISTRICT STAFF SPENT THE SUMMER INSTALLING NEW WATER HEATERS AND AIR CONDITIONERS, UPDATING PIPING WITH NEW COPPER PIPES, REMODELING BUS LANES, REPLACING FENCING, AND APPLYING A FRESH COAT OF PAINT TO THE WALLS.
Families were offered the opportunity to sign up to receive a backpack that was pre-packed with student supplies Pink, green, and orange backpacks were options of choice. A huge thank you on behalf of Zion Elementary School District 6 goes out to Essendant in Carol Stream, who donated backpacks to our students. At this point, 488 students have received a backpack. We are excited to extend our Backpack Bonus Giveaway in the coming months!
We are close to reaching our goal of replacing classroom whiteboards with interactive Promethean displays at all our schools. This past summer the applicable technology was added to classrooms at West Elementary; upon installation at Shiloh Park and Zion Central Middle Schools all district classrooms will be equipped with the beneficial technology.
Over 17,000 sq. ft. of sod was set at the Beulah Park Elementary playground. “This district and community means a lot to me; it reminds me of where I grew up,” said Building and Grounds Director, Julio Ugarte.
With the support of Dr. Roberts and the Board of Education, the playground area receiving new grass and striping was added to the basketball courts. District 6 wants our students to have the best opportunities for their success.
Student and staff security is paramount. Sliding gates were installed at both East and West Elementary Schools to further safeguard the playground and perimeter. Additional or new exterior LED lighting was installed at Beulah Park Elementary, East Elementary, Elmwood Elementary, Lakeview Elementary and Zion Central Middle School. We are excited to welcome our new Security Resource Officers (SROs), Mr. Vines and Mr. Thorton to District 6.

MEJORANDO NUESTRAS ESCUELAS COMUNITARIAS

The Zee-Bees did it again! Our student-athletes earned a victory against Wauconda High School at their tournament to win the championship 5-1. The Zee-Bee Varsity team is off to a great start and we can’t wait to see what they will accomplish this season.
Ahead of the first day of school for all students, the Zee-Bee community kicked off the school year with music, food, games, and student performances at the 2nd Annual Back-to-School Bee Bash.
Our school community came together to celebrate our students as students had an opportunity to enjoy the weather, dance, and unwind before the start of the new school year.
Thank you to all the participating community partners for helping us make this event a huge success.

Dear Zion neighbors,
It’s hard to believe that fall is upon us already - I hope you and your family have had a wonderful summer and were able to take some time to relax and recharge. I ’m wishing all of the kids and teachers a happy and successful school year!
My district office continues to be available to assist with a variety of state related services. If you have questions or need assistance, call or email us - we’re here to help! I’m also very happy to report that we’ve returned to in-person local office hours throughout the district! Stop by and say hello, get information, and request help with state related services.
In addition to providing constituent services, we continue to work on legislation for next year. Your feedback is really important to me as I shape my legislative priorities. I really want to hear from you. So please call, email, or join one of my Legislative Advisory Councils. Call or email us for more information about how to get involved.
As always, my office is here for you. If we can ever be of assistance in helping you access a state service or resource, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Sincerely,
One of the core tenets of the Coalition is to create a community without barriers. Barriers can be big or small, but either way, we are here to help remove barriers. BUZ has completed a few projects that underscore how the Coalition serves the community and aids in removing those barriers.
BUZ - B.U.Z is an acronym for Building Up Zion. BUZ has done just that. While you're around town visiting local businesses see the Monarch Mural near IUP feedstore and Pizza house. Take a walk through the Garden of Eat'n, which is the result of the vision from a prior ZBLA graduate Barbara Price. (photo of Barbara) The vision came to pass after working with sister graduate(s), her mentor ,and the Coalition board and its partners. You can visit the garden at 30th and Elim Ave, behind Memorial United Methodist church. Zion also has a new milkweed and zinnia garden to support all of the monarch caterpillars, thanks to BUZ Queen BeeKeeper, Wendy Driver and her busy bees. When you're taking the metra or going for a jog in Edina Park, remember to stop and smell the flowers. If you're interested in joining, you can contact the queen beekeeper at buz60099@gmail.com
The Coalition is divided up into several task forces. One that many are familiar with is the Zion Benton Leadership Academy and maybe BUZ by now, but did you know that we also have a Community Wellness Task Force? This task force has an objective to raise awareness of issues related to nutrition, exercise, social habits and general health. This is our 2nd year hosting a summer Sunrise Yoga series at the beach. Here are a couple other notable events that we are proud host/sponsor.
• Annual Fore R Youth Golf Outing
• Fall Family Friday Night Movie(s) in the Park - Free, every Friday in September
• Mental Health First Aid Training
The Coalition is proud of the community it serves and continues to grow and evolve. Follow us on FB @ZBCHC / Visit our website https://www.zbchc.com Contact any of our board members to find out more information and learn of ways to get involved. We are also always on the lookout for mentors, financial donors (Paypal.me/ZBCHC) and feedback on how the program can be better at serving the needs of local aspiring leaders, young and old.
The Zion Benton Leadership Academy is entering into it's 10th year. A new session has just kicked off and this class will mark over 100 graduates of the program. One of the major goals for the academy is to encourage and motivate individuals interested in becoming community leaders. A community leader can come in many different forms. If you have a desire to have a positive impact in your community and don't know where to begin or whom to talk with, the Zion Benton Leadership Academy is for you. The program continues to evolve. A Jr. version of the program is entering into it's 5th year. In 2022, ZBLA began a summer program and after school program for 6th - 12th graders. This program focuses on ensuring our kids continue to push their education journey further during the summer months, along with some fun field trips and exposure to exciting fields like STEM. They also got an opportunity to meet with local entrepreneurs and local leaders. Camp goers also received lessons in financial literacy. The students also experienced culture through cuisine. ZBLA Summer Youth Power Citizen camp worked with a local business to provide home cooked cuisine to introduce the children to culture and nutrition. By now you should be wondering how you can support ZBLA. If you would like to attend the program, visit www.zbla.info.
