from Your Zion Leaders

There is a saying: If you think you’re leading, but no one is following, then you’re just taking a walk.

Leadership requires participation from all of us. And any one of us can take up the torch. If you believe that Zion is a community to be proud of, to work for, to welcome ideas, then this message is for you.

Many residents are born in Zion, stayed or returned to Zion, and are succeeding in Zion. Many other residents moved to Zion and are getting involved in their chosen community. It takes all of us working with a shared purpose for Zion to thrive and add to its rich history.

A new chapter starts with the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA) funding. This funding not only supports job training and opportunities through Lake County Workforce Development, but provides a modicum of tax relief for taxpayers with funds for supporting infrastructure improvements, piloting new service initiatives, and generating opportunities for economic growth.

Thank you to everyone who took part in the January Focus group sessions. The Zion taxing bodies rely on your input when planning for the regular budget plus the addition of the CEJA funds. While this round of funding has not been completed, we hope that you appreciate:

The courts and playground improvements at Shiloh Park, and the new look of the Salem play area.

The added resources for emergency aid mental health through the Zion Township.

The added technology and collaborative spaces at both the Zion-Benton Township High School main campus and the ZB East.

The safety improvements at Beulah Elementary to protect students and teachers.

The renovated adult and teen areas at the Zion-Benton Public Library.

Fire and safety responses from the City of Zion Fire and Police Departments.

If you do nothing else, visit the webpages and sign up for enewsletters from the City of Zion, Zion Township, Zion-Benton Pubic Library District, Zion Park District, Zion Elementary School District 6 , Zion Benton Township High School District 126. Find a way to connect. Ask questions.

Letter From Mayor Billy McKinney Carta Del Alcalde Billy McKinney

The City of Zion is the proud home of Illinois Beach State Park, the third highest tourist attraction in the State of Illinois and sits on the shores of our greatest natural resource, beautiful Lake Michigan. Here are some fun facts for our residents about Lake Michigan. It is the third largest Great Lake by surface area, the sixth largest freshwater lake in the world, and the only Great Lake located completely in the USA. In addition, the Illinois portion of the Lake Michigan watershed is home to half the population of Illinois and the lake itself is the largest public drinking water supply in the state, serving nearly 6.6 million people (of a total of over 10 million lake-wide). Our last water quality report indicates that drinking water has become exponentially safer and more reliable than at any other point in human history. Our exceptional staff continues to work hard every day - at all hours to deliver the highest quality drinking water without interruption.

As warm weather arrives, please continue to make use of the scenic beauty and many wholesome programs and special events that are provided by the Zion Park District. We have great open space, parks and trails available to our residents that are located throughout the City of Zion with the sole purpose of enriching all of our lives through the enjoyment which comes from outdoor activities.

On behalf of our business partners in town, please support our local economy by shopping local and using local businesses for your daily needs. Also know that from north to south, east to west there are a plethora of great restaurants sprinkled throughout the city for your dining pleasure.

Let’s enjoy our fine city together and continue to be respectful of our neighbors as we enjoy our neighborhoods and the warm weather that is headed our way.

Sincerely,

Atentamente,

Spring is the “reboot” season for municipal public works as crews shift from winter emergency response to infrastructure restoration. Major priorities include pothole patching and extensive street sweeping to clear winter salt and debris before it clogs storm drains. In Zion, IL, yard waste collection is available from April 1 through November 30 and occurs on your regularly scheduled garbage day. Residents must use biodegradable Kraft paper bags or rigid containers (up to 32 gallons) clearly marked with as “Yard Waste”.

All containers or bundles must stay under a 50–60 lb weight limit. Branches not in containers must be bundled with twine and measure no more than 4 feet long and 18 inches in diameter, with individual branches kept under 2 inches in diameter. Materials like sod, dirt, and rocks are strictly prohibited, as is the open burning of any yard waste. For more information, visit cityofzion.com/ public-works/schedules.

The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) has received a subaward as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Chicago Metro Recycling Education and Outreach (REO) grant. Its goal is to improve recycling participation and decrease contamination in the region. Over the course of four weeks, the SWALCO team checked and tagged Zion recycling carts to provide real-time feedback and promote proper recycling habits. They found that approximately 60-65% of Zion residents participate in curbside recycling.

At the start of their cart tagging initiatives, 50% of recycling carts were contaminated with non-recyclable materials. With your help, we were able to reduce the amount of contamination to 27% in just one month! Due to the success of this initiative, SWALCO will conduct a second round of cart tagging in late April. Team members will be looking in and tagging recycling carts in select areas of the city. Feel free to talk to team members and ask questions. To learn more about this initiative, visit SWALCO.org/Zion.

Solicitor Permits: What You Need to Know

To help protect residents and maintain public safety, the City of Zion requires individuals and businesses engaged in door-to-door solicitation to obtain a solicitor permit before operating within city limits. A solicitor is generally defined as anyone who goes door-to-door to obtain gifts or money for commercial gain, sell or take orders for goods or services, or obtain subscriptions for any type of publication for commercial benefit. This requirement applies to both for-profit and certain non-profit activities. The permit process allows the City to verify the identity of solicitors and ensure they meet local requirements. This helps reduce fraud, prevents unwanted disturbances, and gives residents confidence when interacting with individuals who come to their door. Approved solicitors are issued a permit that must be carried and shown upon request. Soliciting without a valid permit may result in enforcement action, including fines or removal from the area. Residents are encouraged to ask solicitors to display their permit and to report concerns to the Zion Police at 847-872-8000. Individuals or organizations interested in soliciting within the City of Zion should contact the Zion Police Department or visit the City’s website for application details. By following the permit process, solicitors help ensure a safer and more respectful community for everyone.

The primary goal of Zion’s Building & Zoning department is to ensure that both commercial and residential properties are complying with building and roofing codes, addressing property complaints, property maintenance, and code enforcement.

There are few rites of spring more satisfying than the annual deep clean. For many people, however, the pleasure comes when you have decluttered your home of unwanted bulky items. Before discarding those items, please make the necessary arrangements with Waste Management to discard of bulk items properly. They can be reached at (847) 623-3870.

Not sure what materials you can recycle? The REO Campaign’s mascot, Loop, is here to help! As a recycling cart, Loop knows that recycling benefits people and the planet by reducing landfill waste, conserving natural resources, saving energy, and more. That means little treats for Loop are BIG wins for the community and our environment!

¡Me encanta comer reciclables! This project has been funded wholly or in part by the United States Environmental Protection Agency under assistance agreement 84079901 to Metropolitan Mayors Caucus.

ZB EAST LEADS LAKE COUNTY IN COLLEGE CREDIT ACCESS

Zion-Benton Township High School District 126 is proud to share that ZB East is the only high school in Lake County that fully satisfies the Illinois General Education Core Curriculum (GECC) and offers more dual credit opportunities than any other high school in the county.

This distinction allows students to earn transferable college credits while still in high school—reducing outof-pocket college expenses for families and shortening time to degree completion. At District 126, we are committed to expanding access, increasing opportunity, and preparing students not just for graduation, but for a strong and affordable start to their future.

#ZBREADY: GOAL STARTS HERE

Zion-Benton Township High School District 126 is launching #ZBReady, a communitywide call to action to support our 9-11 graders as they prepare for the ACT on April 15.

The ACT is Illinois’ college admissions assessment that measures readiness in English, math, reading, and science. Our focus goes beyond test preparation—it centers on confidence, focus, and a strong mindset.

The Goal is Simple

Rally the Zion-Benton community to help every 9-11 grader walk into the ACT feeling prepared, encouraged, and confident.

We’ve created an ACT Countdown with weekly themes to motivate and inspire students. We are now inviting local businesses, families, alumni, and community members to join us.

How You Can Help:

• Participate in weekly themes

• Post encouragement using #ZBReady

• Businesses—display messages of support

• Families—talk about the ACT and build confidence at home

When our students enter the testing room, they will carry the strength of an entire community behind them. Together, we show what Zee-Bee Pride truly means.

LEARNING

N EW FINE ARTS WING

A NEW FINE ARTS WING: WHERE CREATIVITY MEETS INNOVATION

Zion-Benton Township High School District 126 is proud to unveil our new Fine Arts Wing—an innovative learning space designed to inspire creativity, collaboration, and excellence.

This modern addition provides students with state-of-the-art facilities for visual arts, music, and performance, creating an environment where artistic expression and academic rigor intersect. The space was intentionally designed to foster creativity, support hands-on learning, and showcase student talent at the highest level. More than just new classrooms, the Fine Arts Wing represents our commitment to future-focused learning. It is a place where students develop confidence, discipline, and critical thinking skills that extend far beyond the stage or studio.

At District 126, we continue to invest in spaces that empower students to explore their passions—and transform them into purpose.

Dear Neighbors,

I’m honored to serve as your Illinois State Representative! I love our community, and I’m grateful for the trust you’ve put in me to represent you in Springfield and provide assistance with state services here in the 61st District.

Here are some of the things that I and my district constituent services office do. Please contact us if we can be of assistance!

I welcome your ideas about new laws or changes to existing laws! I also welcome your feedback and questions about, any pending legislation in Illinois. Each year, Illinois legislators vote on an annual budget. If you have thoughts on Illinois’ budget priorities, please let me know. I track feedback from everyone who writes, calls or emails about bills or the budget and I take it all into consideration when voting.

If you are having an issue with a state agency, my office can assist you with seeking a resolution. Common examples include IDES (Unemployment), The Secretary of State (Driver services), the Treasurer (iCash, College Savings, ABLE), the Illinois Department of Revenue (state income taxes), IDFPR (Professional licensing), IDHS (Human Services assistance programs), and IDOT (Dept of Transportation).

Each year I host a variety of events including free shredding, iCash and IPass, college planning, property tax appeal, “Read With Your Rep” for kids, legislative updates and advisory council meetings, and much more. We also host regular neighborhood office hours, bringing our team to your town! Check out our website or sign up for updates so you don’t miss a thing!

We have FREE passes to many popular museums and zoos! Also, if you know someone who is celebrating a big birthday, anniversary, retirement or achievement, I’d love to help them celebrate with a certificate of recognition. I would also be honored to provide a memorial certificate to remember your loved one.
