Το ζήτημα της μνήμης και άρα του κοινωνικού και ατομικού τρόπου επικοινωνίας με το άμεσο περιβάλλον μας, διευθετήθηκε στο παρελθόν μέσω μνημοτεχνικών, οι οποίες μέσω συμβόλων και εμβληματικών εικόνων αποζητούσαν να εγγράψουν τις εκάστοτε πολιτιστικές παραστάσεις στην tabula rasa του ανθρώπινου μυαλού. Αυτό που δεσπόζει στην «τέχνη της μνήμης“ των Ρωμαίων, των χριστιανών ρητόρων του μεσαίωνα καθώς και των καλλιτεχνών της Αναγέννησης είναι οι χωρικές μεταφορές (ανάκτορα, θέατρα, ναοί) εφόσον το ζητούμενο ήταν η τοποθέτηση έντονων εικόνων σε συντεταγμένες θέσεις εντός ενός ιδεατού οικοδομήματος. Η φανταστική περιδιάβαση του οικοδομήματος αυτού ήταν ένας εξεικονιστικός μηχανισμός πλασματικής εξεικόνισης ο οποίος υποβοηθούσε τη μνήμη του ρήτορα ή του καλλιτέχνη. Βέβαια με την εξάπλωση της γραφής διαμέσου της τυπογραφίας και τη „σταδιακή εξωτερίκευση της μνήμης με τη βοήθεια περιφερειακών συσκευών (βιβλίο, υπολογιστής)“ τα θέατρα μνήμης απώλεσαν την πρωταρχική τους σημασία ως κυρίαρχα μοντέλα οργάνωσης της γνώσης και έγιναν απλώς υποκειμενικοί μικρόκοσμοι αναμνήσεων. Η πλέον σύγχρονη εκδοχή αυτών των τεχνολογιών (το Διαδίκτυο) αποτελεί παράδειγμα αυτής της ηθελημένης αποθήκευσης της μνήμης αλλά και εναπόθεσης της σκέψης μας σε έναν τεχνικό μηχανισμό. Πράγματι η κριτική που ασκεί ο Πλάτωνας ενάντια στη γραφή (ως την πρώτη τεχνική εξωτερίκευσης της μνήμης) που εν αντιθέσει με τον προφορικό λόγο δεσμεύει την ζωντανή ύπαρξη σε ένα αναλλοίωτο κείμενο, αποκτά ιδιαίτερη σημασία, σε μια εποχή κατά την οποία το πάτημα ενός πλήκτρου στον προσωπικό υπολογιστή αντιστοιχεί με το τι ξέρω και τι δεν ξέρω, τι θυμάμαι και τι έχω ήδη ξεχάσει. Παρόλα αυτά οι μικρόκοσμοι αναμνήσεων, αυτοί οι προσωπικοί „άτλαντες εικόνων“ που αποτελούν συχνά και την πρώτη ύλη καλλιτεχνικής δημιουργίας, εξακολουθούν να έχουν σημαντική κοινωνική λειτουργία, ακριβώς επειδή αντιτίθενται σθεναρά στην κατανόηση του κόσμου διαμέσου τεχνολογιών που οργανώνουν την κοινωνική και συλλογική μνήμη μέσα από συγκεκριμένα κριτήρια εκλογίκευσης του κόσμου όσων τον διευθύνουν. Το να αναφερθεί λοιπόν κανείς στο έργο ενός καλλιτέχνη, ο οποίος χρησιμοποιεί εμφατικά στα ζωγραφικά του έργα λέξεις-κλειδιά, σύμβολα, εικονογράμματα και γλωσσικά παίγνια απλώς ως λαβυρινθώδεις προσωπικές χαρτογραφήσεις αναμνήσεων, φόβων και επιθυμιών αποδίδει μόνο το μισό της εικόνας. Οι λεκτικές χαρτογραφήσεις στο ώριμο πλέον έργο του Νίκου Λαγού (πίνακες με ακρυλικό σε καμβά και σχέδια με κάρβουνο σε χαρτί) στο οποίο υποχωρεί η παραστατική χρωματική εξεικόνιση εις χάριν της σημειωτικής γραφής λειτουργούν μάλλον σαν μια σύγχρονη biblia pauperum και ως αντίσταση ενάντια σε μια επιφανειακή κοινωνία, μια κοινωνία ημιμόρφωσης εξαιτίας της υπερ-πληροφόρησής της. Ενάντια στον θεαματικό καταιγισμό εικόνων και στα γητεύματα που αυτές μας ασκούν, η σημειωτική του εικαστικού μας ανακαλεί στο να εμπιστευθούμε τους δικούς μας συνειρμούς, την προσωπική μας μνημοτεχνική, την νεοτερική φαντασία (imaginatio) και επινόηση (inventio). Το γλωσσικό bricolage της καθημερινής εμπειρίας δημιουργεί νέους άτλαντες του κόσμου με τους οποίους οφείλουμε να πορευτούμε. Μαζί με έργα όπως η απεικονιστική κυβερνητική του A. R. Penck και οι μηχανισμοί παραγωγής εικόνας-νοήματος όπως αυτός του Jean-Michel Basquiat (για να αναφέρουμε δύο από τους καλλιτέχνες με τους οποίους αναμετράται ο Νίκος Λαγός) ο εικαστικός προσπαθεί να ανατρέψει τον ναρκισσισμό ενός σύγχρονου κόσμου που δεν θέλει να αλλάξει. Δεν υπάρχει παιδική αθωότητα ή εφηβική εξέγερση a la grafiti στα έργα του Λαγού αλλά η πολιτικά θεμελιωμένη κριτική ενάντια σε επίκτητες και μιντιακά κατασκευασμένες εικόνες, έννοιες και αξίες.

The question of memory -and thus the means of social and individual communication with our immediate environment- was partly resolved in the past through mnemonics; memory aids, which sought to inscribe in the human brain’s tabula rasa the various cultural representations through symbols and emblematic images. In the ‘art of memory’ of the Romans, of the Christian medieval orators as well as of the Renaissance artists, spatial metaphors (such as palaces, theatres and temples) were predominant, the key issue being the placement of vivid images in coordinated positions inside an imaginary edifice. This mental walking through the edifice was a mechanism of a fictitious depiction, which has assisted in the orator’s or the artist’s retention of information.

However, along with the spread of writing through printing and the ‘gradual external expression of memory with the aid of peripheral devices (books, the computer)’, memory theatres have lost their main importance as the prevailing models of organizing knowledge, becoming mere subjective microcosms of memories. The most contemporary version of these technologies (the Internet) constitutes an example of such an intentional storage of memory as well as a deposition of our thinking in a technical device. Indeed, the criticism exercised by Plato against the written word (as the first technique to externalize memory) which, unlike oral speech, commits the living being in an unalterable text, acquires particular importance, in an age where the touch of a key on our PC corresponds to what one knows or not, what one remembers or has already forgotten.

Nevertheless, microcosms of memories, these personal “atlases of images” which often also constitute the raw material of artistic creation, continue to have an important social function. And this happens precisely because these microcosms strongly resist the understanding of the world through technologies which organize social and collective memory via specific criteria of rationalisation, imposed on the world by those who rule it. To refer, therefore, to the work of an artist who emphatically uses in his painting key-words, symbols, pictograms and word games, as mere labyrinths in personal cartographies of memories, presents only half of the truth.

The verbal cartographies in Nikos Lagos’s most mature work (paintings with acrylic on canvas and drawings with charcoal on paper), in which the graphical chromatic depiction gives precedence to semiotic writing, function more as a contemporary ‘biblia pauperum’ and as resistance against a superficial society, a society of pseudo-culture due to information overload. In juxtaposition to the spectacular deluge of images, and the allure of these images, the semiotics of the artist invoke a faith in our own associations, our personal mnemonic, the modern imagination (imaginatio) and invention (inventio). The linguistic bricolage of everyday experience creates new global atlases intended as our in tandem directives. Together with works that employ figural cybernetics, such as those by A.R. Penck, and production mechanisms of image-meaning such as the works

by Jean-Michel Basquiat (just to mention two of the artists Nikos Lagos pits himself against), the artist tries to subvert the narcissism of a contemporary world that doesn’t want to change. There’s no childlike innocence or adolescent rebellion a la graffiti in Lagos’ works, but instead a politically-rooted criticism against acquired and media-constructed images, meanings and values.
