PENGUIN

PARENTING

Finn and Fiona the Fiordland Penguins decide it’s time to make a family and lay some eggs.

Working as a team, both Finn and Fiona take turns to sit on the eggs to keep them warm.

It’s a cold winter on New Zealand’s South Island, which might seem like a crazy time to be hatching a new penguin, but that’s the way they do it around these parts.

Fiona lays two eggs in a nest near the other Fiordland Penguin families. They try to find places together that are rocky and hard to get to to keep other animals away.

After the first 10 days, though, Fiona leaves Finn alone with the eggs to go fishing.

Fiona says goodbye and dives into the ocean to hunt and eat lots of fish.

After two weeks Fiona comes back and it’s Finn’s turn to go fishing and Fiona’s turn to look after the eggs. Finn hasn’t eaten for nearly six weeks! He’s so hungry!

4

Penguins are birds but a long time ago their wings evolved into flippers for swimming instead of flying, so now they can’t fly away from danger. Rocks provide safety.

5

Finally the eggs hatch. Finn returns again to look after the chicks and Fiona swims off into the sea on short trips to find food for them all.

Together, the parents care for their new chicks until they are old enough to meet all the other families’ babies that hatched nearby.

OT SPDIFFERENCE

Giraffes spots are as different as human fingerprints. Can you spot 5 differences between these two pictures.

THE

Soon all the chicks start to play together in what is called a creche.

Now that their babies are with other chicks – they watch out for each other and play together – Finn and Fiona can go out together again to get food for them until they are big enough to go swimming for themselves.

Answers: 1. Purple spot | 2. Tongue out | 3. Missing ear | 4. Extra leg | 5. Missing red path in the background

6

It takes a whole colony of penguins and a lot of teamwork to raise baby Fiordland Penguins, but when everyone helps, it’s child’s play.

COME VISIT US

It’s World Giraffe Day on June 21, so come to Werribee Open Range Zoo to say hi to the five giraffes who live there.

OPEN WIDE! See those teeth? Those big chompers at the front of this hippo’s mouth are actually tusks. In the wild, where hippos live in slow-moving rivers and lakes in Africa, they use them to protect their homes. They can move extremely fast underwater, and use these tusks to scare off other animals – sometimes even people – who come near. Hippos spend most of their day in the water keeping cool. They can hold their breath underwater for up to 30 minutes by slowing their heart rate down!! When it’s not too hot they might come out of the river to play in the mud. At night they head up the banks to feed on grass. Hippos live in a group – called a pod, herd or sometimes a crash – of between five and 20 animals.

R E R E D N A W PLAINS H C T A H S K C I CH We’re celebrating the arrival of nine baby Plains-wanderers, one of the most genetically important birds in the world! In late March, nine tiny fluffballs emerged from their eggs at Werribee Open Range Zoo. This is only the second time these unique and critically endangered birds have been bred at a zoo in Victoria!

FUN FACT

While they were still inside their eggs, some of these Plains-wanderer chicks had to be moved to a special machine called an incubator to finish growing.

FUN FACT

Plains-wanderers are so genetically unique that there are no other birds quite like them in the whole world.

FACT

There are fewer than 1000 adult Plains-wanderers left in the wild.

10

FUN FACT

The Plains-wanderer is a small bird that lives on the ground in south-eastern Australia.

THROWING SHADE

MAKE YOUR OWN

T E P P U P W O D A H S THEATRE

You will need:

An empty cereal box (or similar shape cardboard box) Scissors Sticky Tape A4 Tracing paper or Baking paper Pencils A4 sheet black paper A torch or lamp

Fold and sticky tape down the edges. This is the side your audience will see.

10 Sticky tape each pencil to each animal. Now your performers are ready.

1

2

3

Tape both ends of your cereal box shut.

Draw a rectangle on both big sides of the box 2cm in from the edge.

Ask an adult to help you make a hole near the corner of each rectangle.

8

7

9

Draw the shape of some of your favourite animals onto the black paper.

Cut them out and place a pencil in the middle of each so one end sticks out the bottom .

11 Place the theatre on a table edge. Position yourself and the lamp behind the box with the tracing paper side facing away from you. Shine the lamp through the paper and make your puppets move by holding on to the pencils and keeping your hands below the edge of the table.

Create your own stories and add all your favourite animals to the show!

WELCOME TO THE SHOW! IT’S GOING TO BE GREAT!

4

5

6

Ask an adult to insert your scissors into this hole and cut along the lines on both sides.

Now there are 2 holes in your box and you can see straight through.

Place your tracing paper or baking paper on one side of the box.

16

Make sure you get an adult to help you when using scissors to cut things out!
