The HPL service offering is relaxed, supportive and inclusive.

NCEA at Rangi

At Rangi Ruru we are experts in NCEA. We believe this qualification reflects learning that prepares our girls for their futures. The flexibility of NCEA allows Rangi Ruru teachers and s tudents to construct programmes that suits the individual, something other programmes such as International Baccalaureate cannot cater for.

We are very proud of our girls’ outstanding 2019 NCEA results. These are consistent across many years showing our students excelling in NCEA. In 2019 we had two students top New Zealand in Subject Scholarships, in Printmaking and Music.

Stellar Music

As part of the scholarship package girls receive discounted tuition fees, a generous grant towards instrument/ vocal lessons, and are given free access to a mental performance coach. Music scholars are well supported and given many opportunities for performance, leadership, extension, and enrichment in a caring and inclusive environment. Many are also top academic students who continue with their sporting commitments, develop strong leadership skills, and become fully involved in all that Rangi has to offer. Stellar Music Scholars are also expected to serve the Rangi and wider community through the opportunities they are afforded.

Rangi Ruru is one of New Zealand’s top performing schools in Music.

Our music programme - the Stellar Programme - offers music as a subject to all, with increased specialisation and personalisation as girls progress through NCEA Levels 1 to 3 and Scholarship. In the past eight years there has been a 95% success rate in Scholarship, with three Top Subjects Scholars in Music and several Outstanding Music Scholarship awards.

There is an emphasis on the development of the whole girl through our integrated approach to wellbeing. There are also opportunities to develop leadership skills in all aspects of the teaching and learning programme. We offer highly regarded co-curricular programmes: Choral, Orchestral, Jazz, Chamber Music, Stellar Strings, Band, Percussion, New Music, and Musical Theatre.

Instrumental and vocal tuition is available, and performance artists, teachers and composers are engaged as part of our Artist in Residence programme. The continuous cycle of learning as a result of the legacy of girls who have moved on from Rangi, is an important part of our ethos. The development of younger musicians is fostered by them being inspired by senior students, who then move on to make room for the younger ones to move through. Our music alumnae often keep in contact and return to engage in workshops and mentoring with current girls.

Crimson Education

Rangi Ruru has an exclusive partnership with Crimson Education which enables us to deliver national and global opportunities at an unprecedented level.

A dedicated Pathways and Careers Strategist, Krissi Schumacher, is a fulltime member of the Rangi Ruru staff. She meets individually with students to establish their direction and goals. This is followed up with significant tailored assistance in order to secure the best possible pathways outcome for the individual.

In Crimson’s time with Rangi Ruru we have had 100% acceptance in international universities for students with that goal. Over 90% of Rangi Ruru students stay domestically for university and, with Crimson’s assistance, numerous prestigious university scholarships have been offered to our students for domestic study.

Pathways and careers education and strategies include preparation of CVs, interview preparation and practice, and application support. In addition, students are given advice and encouragement

around extra-curricular involvement, community service and academic and leadership mentoring. Preparation for SATs is undertaken as required. This gives our girls the necessary information and confidence to face a succession of options and decisions they will encounter.

The Crimson Scholars

S.O.A.R

S.O.A.R (Supporting Outstanding Athletes at Rangi) is a unique sports programme which provides support and guidance for student athletes who demonstrate talent, potential and determination.

At the heart of S.O.A.R is the philosophy that better people make better athletes. The focus is on empowering and challenging student athletes to become the most outstanding version of themselves in their journey through sport and, ultimately, life.

Underpinning the programme is a focus on building a platform of behavioural traits which positively contribute to sporting performance but also to life outside of sport.

Participation in this programme is based on application. Consideration will be given to students in Year 9 who are on General Excellence Scholarships (tagged to sport). Numbers will be restricted and limited to a maximum of 20 students in any one year.

Throughout the year student athletes involved in the programme will have SEVEN official touch points which

will provide an opportunity for S.O.A.R athletes to grow as people and athletes. These generic sessions will be held during whanau time and will often involve guest speakers who will share their journey to date.

In addition to these sessions, it is our intention that individualised content will be organised around the needs of each athlete. This will include but is not limited to:

• Mental Performance

• Nutrition

• Targeted strength and conditioning, and body balance assessment

• Performance analysis – utilising HUDL and expert coaches

Throughout the year, each student athlete will also have three one on one meetings with the Director of Sport. These sessions will act as a check in to see how the year is progressing, how the programme is supporting students, and where the focus is for the coming term for each student.

Rangi’s support of co-curricular activities and a give-it-a-go attitude helped me to develop the courage to explore new opportunities, allowing me to maintain breadth and flexibility in my study despite the increasing pressure to specialise’.
