URBAN MORPHOLOGY AND TYPOLOGY

ANALYZING THE NUANCES WITHIN... Dubai follows a range of diversified urban typologies throughout. High-rise towers populate the banks of Sheikh Zayed road. Buildings and their heights gradually subside on moves further away from the 14-lane highway Dubai lacks a sense of cohesion that results in spatial segregation

NEW YORK

DUBAI

COMPARATIVE STUDIES

Dubai is highly car-centric and New York is highly pedestriancentric New York can be considered a 15 minute city where any and almost every essential service is available within 15 minutes of a walk

Although New York and Dubai have very obvious differences, they share a point of similarity, that being the influence of infrastructure and how they shape the city physically as well as experientially.

NEW YORK

Due to New York's infrastructure, it makes it transit friendly due to decentralized society system.

THE FRAME OF THE CITY SHEIKH ZAYED, THE SPINE OF DUBAI

Sheikh Zayed road has been a pivotal and defining 'space' in Dubai's rise to splendor and innovation. Spanning through major landmarks and areas of interests throughout Dubai, and over time becoming a symbol of cutting edge innovation

VEINS OF DUBAI

Road network dominates the surrounding space as the veins of Dubai. Providing the chance of better automobile accessibility, pedestrian lacks the easy movement in and around the city making it more carfriendly.

A SPLASH OF GREEN

Around Sheikh Zayed road, there are a few green spaces that allow people to interact, unwind and detach themselves from their stressful and busy lives, it is essential to respect these spaces and enhance the public realm as much as possible.

THE BLACK & WHITE

The diversity in the urban pattern of dubai determines the spatial segregation due to independent estates built in their own interest to make a better isolated community to themself. This makes it less social and introvert society.

THE LEFTOVER SPACES

Infrastructure heavily dictates the growth and urban fabric of Dubai, due to its rapid growth in a short timespan, there formed leftover spaces that are now occupied by buildings of various kinds.

FACADE

FENESTRATIONS Every building forms to be unique in their own style, although the fenestrations created have distinct features or functions assigned to them to improve user experience, reducing the energy use and impact on environment. To sustain with the adjacencies buildings using glass allows the permeability to the towers. The glass reflects the sky to blend in and not dominate on the surroundings.

ELEMENTS

MATERIALITY

Material plays an important role in buildings, perhaps the suitable materials can help the building life to increase if we use sustainable materials. The buildings on Shaikh Zayed Road have mostly used the materials concrete, steel, glass and, aluminum cladding. Choice of materials also decide the maintenance of the building.

URBAN PATTERNS

The skyline of Sheikh Zayed road forms an important part in designing a new building as its a road front property which catches pedestrian or vehicular attention.

SKY LINE

SITE

EDGES The edges mark the limitations and points to consider around the site for the building. The above diagrams show the adjacent buildings to site, views to consider, pedestrian movement, and parking. Taking in account these analysis lead us to better planning for our design.

BUILDING TYPOLOGY INSTITUTIONAL BUILDINGS

RELIGIOUS BUILDINGS

RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS

The institutional buildings are designed in a radial grid within convenience of site area and user behavior.

The mosque near is designed in typical mosques in UAE, with beige walls.

The east of site holds a residential tower and parking. The south side comprises of bicycle parking, drop off, direct connection to Sheikh Zayed Road, and the view to Burj Khalifa. The access is shared for bicycle and pedestrians.

Residential buildings are in more perpendicular grid to make use of smaller area to adjust more amount of floors in a vertical manner. Some of the buildings are interconnected to each other from the bridges in between.

KEY FINDINGS THE TIMELINE

With the strong façade of high rise structures along Sheikh Zayed Road, the abstract model of urban fabric was produced by concentrating on the barrier that Sheikh Zayed Road generates. It is dominated by motor traffic, where it is concluded that it is an accurate interpretation of a contemporary urban jungle.

2022 The figure shows how Dubai has grown tremendously during the last several decades. till this very day, the city has grown into a contemporary jungle, leaving an empty plot of land as a highly sought-after piece of land with a rapidly increasing population, it has become a modern metropolis.
