HISTORY GT America is the missing bridge between 19th century American Gothics and 20th century European Neo-Grotesk typefaces. It uses the best design features from both traditions in the widths and weights where they function optimally. It has tapered stems and subtly angled spurs, and a very useful monospaced GT America Mono subfamily. Designed

by Noël Leu, with Seb McLauchlan.

Like the typeface itself, it combines the visual worlds of Switzerland and the United States in a playful manner. Gothic typeface designs in the United States and Grotesques in continental Europe did not evolve separately from each other. Yet Neo-Grotesk designs squarely build on the structure and ideals of European typefaces such as Scheltersche and Akzidenz Grotesk.

Why’s it called GT America? Like Helvetica, which is named after Switzerland (Helvetica is Latin for Swiss), the name GT America reflects its country of inspiration, which is the United States, and its rich tradition of Gothic letterforms.

An incredible range of built-in versatility: GT America consists of 84 styles in 6 widths (including a monospaced), grouped into 6 subfamilies. Stroke ending angles vary across each style for optimal legibility, and tapered stems keep tight corners, such as the counterspace at the top of a capital A, open and bright. GT America’s narrow overall design lends it an economical feel for text setting, and the condensed version allows even greater flexibility in tight spaces.

The concept was to design a Gothic typeface with a Swiss mindset. The typeface is meant to be quiet, not overly expressive, to keep it versatile in a variety of applications. It’s particularly useful for complicated corporate identity and branding projects, where a variety of styles is needed.

Grilli Type is an independent Swiss type foundry offering original retail and custom typefaces as well as wordmarks to customers from all over the world.

Grilli Type cofounder Noël Leu is a Swiss graphic designer and type designer who started the foundry together with Thierry Blancpain in 2009. He travels extensively across East Asia, Europe and North America where he gives lectures and workshops.

Their customers range from an artisanal butcher in Australia, a specialist coffee roaster in China, and the Swiss government, to commercial organizations like GQ Magazine, Google, New York City’s promotional organization NYC & Company, and agencies like Sid Lee, Wolff Olins, and Arnold Worldwide. With their background in graphic design, Grilli Type differentiates themselves by a very active, visual approach to the promotion of their typefaces.

Seb McLauchlan [Sebastian McLauchlan] Type designer in Wellington, New Zealand, who created these typefaces in or just before 2015: Colchis (sharp-edged display type), Edme (a wedge serif named after French sculptor Edme Bouchardon, as if the letters are meant for stone-cutting), Basis (sans), Central.
