Slits & Slots by Tan Zi Syuen
The Slit and Slot is a five-story residential building, meticulously crafted using a combination of rabbet and dado joinery. Originating from a concept inspired by tongue and groove joinery, a probe was developed to explore the tactile qualities and scalability of the structure. This initial probe was then abstracted and expanded into a series of progressions, ultimately forming the basis for the creation of individual living units. Each unit is carefully curated through the expansion and combination of sample aggregations. When considered in relation to its site, this vertical dwelling is purposefully designed to enhance connectivity among the residents of Kampong Kapor. The intention is to revive the communal spirit that was lost due to a tragic fire. Commemorating the village community, the building incorporates communal and linkage spaces to foster intimacy among residents. Featuring various unit types derived from sample aggregations, the Slit and Slot enables residents to connect with neighbours from diverse backgrounds. The diverse unit types cater to different spatial needs, ensuring that the building serves various groups of residents. The central light well and circulation system guide individuals through different levels of the vertical dwelling, creating a journey that unfolds diverse moments and scenes. As one ascends the residential core, they are led to engage with different stories, further enriching the overall living experience. The overarching goal of Slit and Slot is to provide a secure environment where residents can come together, learn, and thrive within their living spaces. Slits and slots aspire to establish a secure haven for residents, encouraging them to forge connections, learn from one another, and collectively grow within the shared living spaces. The project’s vision is to not only provide shelter but to actively contribute to the rebuilding of a strong sense of community within Kampong Kapor.
