America’s “Quad Alliances”: Can a U.S. alliance with Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and India counter the advances of China, Iran, and Russia?

T

he Great Reset is a term that has been widely used over the past few years to describe an impending seismic restructuring of global systems. Government, finance, commerce, education, food, health, travel – literally every facet of our lives – seems to be squarely in the crosshairs of those who seek to wrest control of the planet in order to implement their own global agenda for humanity. In confluence with this reality, however, there is also clear evidence the world is fracturing into regionalism, with powerful nations seeking to form regional blocs that align with their own strategic goals. For many smaller nations, this is a pivotal moment that will determine their future – and quite possibly their very survival. In this newly-emerging, multi-polar planet, the U.S. and China are the obvious powers. In diplomatic circles the two are said to be global competitors. The reality, however, is they are more akin to archenemies. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is at war with the U.S. for global supremacy. But it’s not a “conventional war” being fought with bullets and bombs (at least to this point), but rather an “asymmetrical war” being waged through cyber attacks, currency manipulation, intellectual theft, technological and corporate infiltration, unfair trade practices, fentanyl exporting, and election meddling. Key questions remain as this asymmetrical war is fought. Which nations will align with the U.S. and which will be drawn into the power and influence of the CCP? Recently, President Biden and a U.S. delegation visited Saudi Arabia to meet with the King and Crown Prince. According to reports, the delegation had several significant objectives, but the one most widely discussed in the American media was whether President Biden would be able to convince the Saudis to bring down the price of oil.

ZION’S FIRE | MARCH-APRIL 2022

The coming weeks will give evidence as to the President’s success or failure in this matter. Aside from oil, however, there were other crucial issues on the official agenda: 1) to facilitate Israel’s further integration into the region, 2) to align Saudi Arabia, Israel, and other Arab partners on a stalled nuclear deal with Iran, and 3) to counter China and Russia’s influence in the Middle East. This agenda makes clear the U.S. is very concerned that Saudi Arabia doesn’t drift toward China. The U.S. is hoping to convince Saudi Arabia to sign the Abraham Accords with Israel (brokered by the Trump administration in 2020) and thus, solidify the Kingdom’s position as an ally of Israel and the U.S. in the deepening conflict with Iran and China. In light of this threat the U.S. has initiated two new major alliances to counter a unified axis of nations that include China, Iran, and Russia. The first of these alliances, “Quad-East”, includes the U.S., Australia, Japan, and India. It is intended to contain the CCP in Asia and counter China’s Belt and Road Initiative over the next decade. (See Zion’s Fire, July-August 2020.) The second alliance is “Quad-West,” (dubbed I2U2) and includes Israel, India, the United Arab Emirates (signator of the Abraham Accord with Israel), and the U.S. This economic and security alliance was a likely focus of President Biden’s recent visit with the Saudi monarchs. A decision by the Saudis to support the “Quad-West Alliance” would be very significant in America’s efforts to contain Chinese expansionism. Israel and Saudi Arabia have been working together clandestinely on security issues for years. But should the Saudis choose to forge an open, economic and military alliance with Israel to counter Iran, the stage could be set for the events of the last days and the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. u

EDITOR’S NOTE: India is included in both U.S. alliances, indicating the U.S. sees India’s role as indispensable toward thwarting the advances of China in the Middle East. Notably, while India seeks to maintain an uneasy neutrality in the region, India and Israel are historic allies and are currently working closely together on cyber-espionage threats emanating from China.

A national paper shortage has delayed the printing of Zion’s Fire magazine. Therefore, we are addressing President Biden’s visit to Saudi Arabia in an issue of Zion’s Fire which is dated earlier than the actual date of his visit. Thank you for your patience and understanding. 3

Good News From a Far Country Written by David Rosenthal

Dear Beloved Friend, By God’s grace, and through the prayers and support of friends like you, our Servant’s Heart team brought “living water” to spiritually thirsty souls in Israel. My wife and I recently returned home from the Holy Land with our Servant’s Heart ministry team. What a joy it was for us to share our faith, provide food for the poor, give support to our ministry partners, and spend valuable time with our Zion’s Hope missionaries and their families! The first five days of our journey were spent in Jerusalem. The following day our team traveled through the desert to the small city of Arad to meet with a pastor who leads an effective ministry to the Arab Bedouins living in the Judean Wilderness. Our appointment with him was scheduled for the afternoon, so we carved out some time in the morning to hike at the oasis of En Gedi. This is the place where David hid from King Saul and his army.

4

It is here that David spared Saul’s life, instead choosing to cut off a piece of his royal robe when the king unwittingly entered a cave where David was hiding. This picturesque ravine of springs and waterfalls in the desert is a hiker’s paradise. Most who visit the site hike in the lower valley, but our team decided to follow a trail that took us up into the hot, dry, rocky peaks above the verdant valley. Up there the view is stunning, but shade is difficult to find, and the water we brought with us quickly warmed and was no longer refreshing. The heat was sweltering, sweat poured from our reddened faces, and we were forced to rest for several minutes below the summit. I knew there was another spring 10 minutes ahead, but for our team at that moment, 10 minutes seemed like 10 miles! As the sun beat down, we pushed on and eventually spotted a small grove of trees. I wish you could have seen the expressions of joy on the faces of our team when they discovered the cool waters gushing from a cluster of boulders nearby. In a most unlikely place – the Judean Wilderness – we drank freely from the flowing waters of the spring and jumped in to cool off. Instantly, we were refreshed and rejuvenated! This vivid experience draws my heart and mind to a verse of Scripture that summarizes our Servant’s Heart experience in Israel. Yes, the cool waters at the En Gedi spring quenched our physical thirst. But more importantly, by God’s grace, we were able to bring “living water” and spiritual blessing to thirsty souls in Israel!

GOOD NEWS FROM A FAR COUNTRY

As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country. Proverbs 25:25

This is “good news from a far country,” and I’m thrilled to share it with you. Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude to God. Several on our Servant’s Heart team had wonderful witnessing opportunities – to a Jewish man in the Old City – to a husband and wife walking along the Via Dolorosa – to a barefoot young Ethiopian man in Jerusalem – to a young Korean woman visiting the Church of the Holy Sepulchre – and to a Palestinian taxi driver near the Garden Tomb. We assembled hundreds of food-care packages for the poor, the elderly, Holocaust survivors, and struggling believers in Jerusalem and Nazareth. We brought encouragement, love, and financial help to young mothers at a crisis-pregnancy center. We met with ministry leaders to initiate important Scripture projects at the Bible Society. We spent valuable time with pastors in Jerusalem, Arad, and Haifa and provided support for their churches and ministries. We visited a Messianic Christian school, spent time with the students, and delivered financial help to their families. Because of faithful ministry friends like you, the largest single Servant’s Heart budget we’ve ever set was reached! Our team distributed nearly $160,000 to our ministry partners during our time in Israel.

I assure you these funds were received with genuine gratitude and will have an eternal impact in the lives of many people. As always, your generosity is vital to our full-time Zion’s Hope missionary staff who labor faithfully to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to God’s Chosen People. Like a spring in the desert, your participation gives life to these worthy endeavors. Thank you for sustaining us. In His service and for His glory,

GAL ATIANS PART 6 : THE FUTILIT Y OF RETURNING TO THE L AW

I

n the first two chapters of Galatians, Paul defends himself against the legalistic teachers who are always on his heels. In the strongest language, Paul condemns these legalists who try to derail his message of grace by faith alone. Interestingly, Galatians is not the only one of Paul’s letters in which he takes the legalists to task; Paul is even more impassioned in his letter to the Philippians. In Chapter 3, verse 2, he writes: Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. This is an angry Paul. He calls those who insist that Gentile believers must convert to Judaism “evil workers.” He also calls them “the concision,” which means “the mutilators.” This is a reference to circumcision, which the legalists were teaching was a requirement for male followers of Christ. The legalists were not merely teaching circumcision, but mutilation – the mutilation of doctrine, specifically, the doctrine of grace by faith alone apart from the Mosaic Law. In verse 3, Paul clearly contrasts the “mutilators” to true believers in Christ: For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh. In other words, worship of God is not in the flesh; it is not in “the doing”; it is not of works. Worship of God is in the Spirit, as Jesus taught in John 4:23-24.

ZION’S FIRE | MARCH-APRIL 2022

The bottom line is this: You are either in Christ, or out of Christ. If you are in Christ, you are blessed with every spiritual blessing in Heaven. If you are out of Christ, you are under divine judgment and condemnation. Believers are in Christ, and it is all of grace.

The Foolish Galatians Do you think Paul is upset? Do you think he is angry? You bet he is! As we begin Galatians Chapter 3, Paul chastises his readers:

Written by

Marvin J. Rosenthal 1935 – 2022

O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? (v. 1). Paul uses bold and biting language throughout this book, and verse 1 is no exception. When Paul writes, “O foolish Galatians,” he is in combat mode. He is fighting for the great doctrine of grace through faith in Christ alone, and he must defend the issue at all costs. At the same time, he is also lamenting the Galatians’ lack of discernment. He cannot help but ask, “who hath bewitched you?” The question is rhetorical. Of course Paul knows it is the legalistic teachers who are doing the bewitching. What he can’t understand is how the Galatians could be such willing pawns of their false teaching. Paul next asks the Galatians another rhetorical question, with the purpose of compelling them to think: This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

Paul ... is fighting for the great doctrine of grace through faith in Christ alone, and he must defend the issue at all costs.

Paul cannot believe the Galatians could have turned so willingly from the truth of Christ’s Gospel.

... salvation by faith is not solely a New Testament doctrine; it was taught in the Old Testament through the prophet Habakkuk: “… but the just shall live by his faith” (2:4). This truth is so vital that it is used three times in the New Testament (Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:11, and Hebrews 10:38).

10

Paul asks the Galatians whether they received Christ by faith alone, or through the Mosaic Law. Did they actually “do” something to receive the Spirit, or did they receive Him in faith. Both Paul and the Galatians know the answer. In light of the obvious, Paul continues in verse 3, “Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?” Again, this is a rhetorical question. It is really more a statement of disbelief. Paul cannot believe the Galatians could have turned so willingly from the truth of Christ’s Gospel. He is in essence telling them, If you did not get saved by works – by doing something – why would you suddenly adopt a policy of works? This makes no sense. This is pure foolishness. In doing what they are doing, the Galatians are perverting the grace of God. [It should be noted here that salvation by faith is not solely a New Testament doctrine; it was taught in the Old Testament through the prophet Habakkuk: “… but the just shall live by his faith” (2:4). This truth is so vital that it is used three times in the New Testament (Romans 1:17; Galatians 3:11; and Hebrews 10:38).] Paul continues in verses 4 and 5: Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain. He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

Yet again, these questions are designed to compel the Galatians to think. Paul reasons with them, though it is evident that his patience is being stretched. He cannot believe he has to engage in such reasoning.

Father Abraham In verse 6, Paul brings Abraham into his argument. The reason Abraham is so crucial to Paul’s argument is that Abraham preceded Moses by more than 400 years. Paul will argue that Abraham – father of the Hebrew nation – was not saved through the Mosaic Law, but by faith. This is why Paul paraphrases Genesis 15:6 when he writes, “Even as Abraham believed God, and it [Abraham’s faith] was accounted to him for righteousness” (v. 6). Paul continues in verse 7: Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. The legalistic teachers were saying that Gentile believers must believe in the Mosaic Law. Paul counters by saying, in essence, if Gentile believers want to be descendants of Abraham, it must come through faith, not by observing the Mosaic Law. Paul builds on the argument in verse 8: And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

ZION’S FIRE | MARCH-APRIL 2022

GAL ATIANS PART 6 : THE FUTILIT Y OF RETURNING TO THE L AW

When God gave that promise to Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3; 22:18), it was always His intent that the Gentiles would share in the blessings of Abraham through faith, not through the Law. This is why Paul wrote in verse 9: So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. The Mosaic Law was never a requirement for an individual to be justified before God. It would be given to Israel for a different purpose, but it was never intended for the Gentiles, both in biblical days as well as today. Paul writes in verse 10: For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. Being under the Law was a curse because it was impossible to live up to every requirement of the Law. If one broke just one area of it, they broke all of it. The Law had three specific areas of focus: moral (what an individual can and cannot do), civil (governmental), and ceremonial (the priesthood and sacrificial system). Nonetheless, the Law was a

ZION’S FIRE | MARCH-APRIL 2022

“whole.” If you broke one, you broke them all. This is why observing the Law put individuals under the curse. Those observing it were to “continue in all things.” All things. This is what the Law required, and this requirement was impossible to attain. Paul builds on this sobering truth in verses 11 and 12: But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. Paul’s point is that living according to grace is a blessing. On the other hand, living under the Law is a curse. Paul doesn’t want believers to waste even a second considering living under the Law, therefore he writes in verse 13:

But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH. AND THE LAW IS NOT OF FAITH: BUT, THE MAN THAT DOETH THEM SHALL LIVE IN THEM. – Galatians 3:11-12

Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree. Jesus came to Earth to redeem humanity from its sins – something the Law couldn’t do. Those who believed they could earn God’s favor by obeying the Law were misled; what they believed to be a blessing was actually a curse. Jesus’ death on the cross freed humanity from the Law.

Being under the Law was a curse because it was impossible to live up to every requirement of the Law. If one broke just one area of it, they broke all of it.

Salvation would be by grace, not the Law; by faith, not by works. The word “redeemed” means to be set free.

Salvation would be by grace, not the Law; by faith, not by works. The word “redeemed” means to be set free. The imagery is of a slave in the marketplace being publicly put up for sale. He is almost naked, has no rights, and can make no appeal. He is mere property. When a benefactor comes along and pays the price for that slave, he is redeemed; he has been removed from the marketplace. At this point, the slave is at the purchaser’s mercy. Believers were slaves to sin with no way out. But Christ came, redeemed us, and set us free. Once He purchases us, Christ is free to do what He wants with us; and what He chooses is to set us free from the Law and place us under grace. With such a Master as this, how can we not follow Him in love, devotion, and appreciation? The result of Christ redeeming us is “That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles

confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.” When Paul writes that he is speaking “after the manner of men,” he means that he is not using “holierthan-thou” words; he is not trying to impress his readers with lofty language. He is talking to them in simple and sincere words, as one who deeply cares about them. Paul wants to make sure the Galatians know precisely what he is saying. He reasons that even in the case of a human covenant, if all parties agree to it, it is established as is; nothing is taken from it, and nothing is added to it. Building on this logic, Paul says in verse 16: Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

Once He purchases us, Christ is free to do what He wants with us; and what He chooses is to set us free from the Law and place us under grace. through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith” (v. 14).

Christ the “Seed” In verse 15, Paul writes: “Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet if it be

12

In other words, the specific blessings of faith would not come through the multitude of Abraham’s physical descendants, which would be “seeds,” but through Christ, the lone “seed” of Abraham. Of course the blessing would be carried through the lineage of Abraham – Isaac, Jacob, Judah, and the rest – but it would run ultimately

ZION’S FIRE | MARCH-APRIL 2022

GAL ATIANS PART 6 : THE FUTILIT Y OF RETURNING TO THE L AW

through one “seed” – Christ – that the promises would be fulfilled. Just as Abraham was declared righteous by God through faith, so through Christ would all people have the potential to be declared righteous and acceptable before God. Just as Abraham was declared acceptable by believing in God’s Word, so all people would be declared acceptable before God by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. Paul continues in verse 17:

be declared righteous in the sight of God. This covenant preceded the Law and has much greater weight and worth. Why would anyone want to live under the influence of the lesser when the greater is so much more glorious? Paul concludes his argument in verse 18:

And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.

In other words, if all the blessings of God can be attained by adhering to the Mosaic Law, then the promise of God is of no account; His covenant with Abraham was of no avail. However, the covenant with Abraham was of a promise, and God will never break His promise. What He has promised, He will do. He promised acceptability before Him through faith in His Son Jesus Christ, and He will uphold His promise by granting redemption to all who confess the name of Jesus Christ. Have you taken hold of the promise of God? Are you resting in the sufficiency of His grace? Have you given your life to Jesus Christ? If not, let me implore you to fall to your knees right now and confess Him as your Lord and Savior. He is the “Seed” of Abraham, and died for you that you might have everlasting life. u

This is Paul’s key argument. The covenant between God and Abraham – as recorded in Genesis 12:1-3 – came a full 430 years before the Mosaic Law. Therefore, despite the importance of it, the Mosaic Law cannot cancel out the original covenant with Abraham, which was a covenant resting upon the foundations of faith in God’s promise. What was the promise God made to Abraham? It was first stated in Genesis 12:1-3, and made more complete in Genesis 22:18: And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. To accept this by faith – that the seed who bought our redemption is Christ – is to

ZION’S FIRE | MARCH-APRIL 2022

Just as Abraham was declared acceptable by believing in God’s Word, so all people would be declared acceptable before God by believing in the Lord Jesus Christ.

For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

In the next edition of Zion’s Fire: “Part 7: Covenants, Angels, and Mediators.” The Mosaic Law “was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.” What does this mean? In essence, the Mosaic Covenant was conditional, and therefore required a mediator.

oses had a pedigreed education. He was raised in the home of Pharaoh of Egypt, and the Bible points out that he “was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds” (Acts 7:22). Because Moses was familiar with Egyptian thought – it would be reasonable to assume that, having been trained in Egypt, he would uphold Egyptian beliefs. It is amazing, therefore, that although Egyptian belief of how the universe began which said the earth came from an egg, Moses wrote, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). And, although Egyptian astronomy claimed the earth could give birth to the sun, Moses wrote, “And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of

the heaven to give light upon the earth” (Genesis 1:16-17). And, notwithstanding the Egyptian anthropology which said humanity derived from worms along the Nile, Moses wrote, “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Genesis 2:7). Moses knew what the Egyptians did not know because their worldview was based upon the incomplete and inaccurate reasoning of humanity, and Moses’ worldview was based upon the revelation of God.

THE WONDER OF THE WORD

giant, Atlas. The Egyptians thought the earth sat upon five great pillars. In amazing and marked contrast, the “earliest” written book of the Bible declares, “He … hangeth the earth upon nothing” (Job 26:7). Job knew what would take humanity thousands of years to discover because God had told him. The prophet Isaiah was way ahead of his time in his understanding of geography. He wrote of the One “that sitteth upon the circle of the earth” (Isaiah 40:22). He wrote this 2,000 years before Columbus discovered the world was round. Isaiah was sure of his facts because God had told him. The writer of the letter to the Hebrews knew 1,900 years ago what scientists have been able to prove within the past century – namely, that the physical, tangible, visible universe in which we live is composed of material invisible to the eye. He put it this way: “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear” (Hebrews 11:3). This is fundamental in understanding the molecular, atomic nature of the universe. But, how did a theologian understand this truth centuries ago? The answer is simple: God had told him. Peter was a popular preacher of his day. By divine enablement he looked down the corridor of time to view the end of human history. He clearly saw the destruction of the earth through near explosion. This is how he explains it: “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up” (2 Peter 3:10). Scientists confirm this is an accurate description of a nuclear explosion. As Moses explained the origin of the earth and heavens, Peter foretold their demise. Peter knew about this because God had told him.

THE MEANING OF REVELATION Simply stated, revelation is the disclosing to humanity of truth which could not have been known apart from divine enablement. Moses, Job, Isaiah, Peter, the writer of Hebrews, and other biblical

authors shared truths made known to them directly from God. Inspiration, on the other hand, is the superintending of God’s Word through men who were under the controlling influence of the Holy Spirit. Parts of the Bible came through direct revelation; all of the Bible is Godinspired. Peter describes the process of inspiration this way: “… holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (2 Peter 1:21). The apostle Paul defined the benefits of inspiration when he wrote, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect [mature], throughly [completely] furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). The Bible is the map and compass for life’s journey. It is a book – a divine volume – a gift to humanity of infinite, unsurpassable wonder.

THE WONDROUS BIBLE ◆

◆

◆

There is the wonder of its formation. Most books are written within the span of a single lifetime. The Bible was written over a period of more than 1,600 years (1500 B.C. to A.D. 100). Its human authors varied in lifestyle, education, and geographic location. With few exceptions, they never knew one another and, in some cases, had never read each other’s writings. There is the wonder of its unification. Within its pages, the Bible includes history, biography, prophecy, philosophy, poetry, and science. Still, there is one singular theme – 66 books which make a glorious whole – a golden chain which points to Jesus, a scarlet thread that speaks of redemption through His shed blood. There is the wonder of its nationalism. God, in the prerogative of divine sovereignty, chose the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to give this unimaginable treasure to the world. From a human perspective, the Bible is a

Jewish book. Slice it anywhere between Genesis and Revelation and you will read of a Jewish land, a Jewish people, a Jewish culture, and a promised Jewish Deliverer. The Bible studied out of its context is incomprehensible. The discouraged, the defeated, the downtrodden, the confused, the fearful, the lonely – men and women without number – have drawn its truth to their bosom in the darkness of night to see the dawn of a new day.

◆

There is the wonder of its language. The book of beginnings (Genesis) sets forth with amazing directness the origin of Earth, of man, of sin, of death, and of potential redemption. At the other end of the spectrum, the book of unveilings (Revelation), with stark candor and graphic imagery, tells how it is all going to end. In between these two books are such mountain peaks as the unexcelled style and language of the Book of Isaiah, whose author walked with kings. There is the impregnable logic of Romans, which boldly proclaims that a holy God can redeem unholy men and women without becoming stained by humanity’s sin – and all the while answering Socrates’ statement to Plato: “If deity can forgive sin, I don’t know how.”

24:35). The psalmist, as well, confirmed this fact: “For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven” (Psalm 119:89). And, the prophet Isaiah illustrated this eternality when he wrote, “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever” (Isaiah 40:8). The importance of the eternality of God’s Word cannot be overemphasized. At wedding ceremonies, men and women pledge their word to “love and cherish till death do us part.” However, about half of all marriages end in divorce. Businessmen and women enter into agreements, often only to break their word when the agreement is no longer profitable. Nations enter into treaties with one another, but with the passing of time and the changing of circumstances – when the treaty is no longer beneficial – it is often broken. How refreshing it is to be assured that, unlike sinful humanity, “God is not a man, that he should lie” (Numbers 23:19). ◆

(And who can do justice in describing the 150 Jewish hymns called, in the Bible, the Psalms. The discouraged, the defeated, the downtrodden, the confused, the fearful, the lonely – men and women without number – have drawn its truth to their bosom in the darkness of night to see the dawn of a new day.) ◆

Jesus Himself said … “HEAVEN AND EARTH SHALL PASS AWAY, BUT MY WORDS SHALL NOT PASS AWAY.” 16

◆

There is the wonder of its appeal. The reader will find among the Bible’s pages direction for living. The elderly will find comfort, understanding, and confidence in dying. The rich and poor, the educated and the simple, the king and the subject – all have been magnetically drawn to this most amazing volume. Its appeal is timeless because it answers the questions, “Why was I born?” “Why am I living?” and “Is there life and hope beyond the grave?” There is the wonder of its eternality. “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away” (Matthew

◆

There is the wonder of its truth. It would be worthless to have a word from God that is eternal if it were not also true. Jesus prayed, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth” (John 17:17). “Sanctify” literally means to “set apart.” Jesus is asking His Father to set apart those He has redeemed through the truth of the Word. It would be futile to have an eternal word from God which is not true – or a true word which is not eternal. Eternality and truth must be wed to one another if God’s Word is to be profitable. See how beautifully the psalmist unites these principles: “Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever” (Psalm 119:160). God’s Word is eternally true, but it’s more than that. There is the wonder of its aliveness and power. The author of the most evangelistic book of the Old Testament is again helpful. Concerning God’s Word to humanity, he wrote, “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my

THE WONDER OF THE WORD

mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it” (Isaiah 55:11). The writer to the Hebrews wrote, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword” (Hebrews 4:12). There were a number of different kinds of swords in the ancient world. One had a sharp point and was designed for piercing. Another was light, had a sharp blade, and was constructed for cutting. A third had a sharp blade, was heavy, and was intended for cutting through an opponent’s weapon – it was cumbersome and had to be wielded with two hands. A fourth sword was later invented that was lightweight and sharp on both sides of the cutting blade. This sword revolutionized ancient warfare. It is to this fourth sword that the writer to the Hebrews was referring. He said that God’s Word is a “twoedged sword” – it has the ability of cutting to the innermost recesses of a person in order that eternal life might issue forth. John Newton experienced the living power of the Word of God. As a youngster, he ran away from home and went to sea. He eventually became a ship’s captain. Involved in the slave trade and all kinds of immoral living, Newton slid into the depths of despair and was contemplating suicide. The Word of God, which he had heard at his mother’s knee, resurfaced in his life, and Newton was gloriously saved. Newton became one of the Church’s great preachers and most prolific hymn writers. Among his many hymns is “Amazing Grace,” its most famous line reading, “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see.” Newton had experienced firsthand the eternally true Word of God which is alive and powerful and able to transform a condemned, vile sinner into an eternal son of God.

A TRAGIC TRUTH

and rejected by the great mass of unregenerate humanity; is little more than a dust collector for a large segment of those who call themselves Christians; and is often preached more about than from by we who call ourselves conservative, evangelical, fundamental Christians. It is too often preachers – of which I certainly am one – who are guilty of using a text as a springboard to dive into our own thoughts or applications, or giving an application from a biblical text without first interpreting the text being considered. At other times, we totally ignore the historical, grammatical, and cultural background out of which a particular passage comes. As a result, many who name the name of Christ are biblically deficient, notwithstanding many years of instruction in Bible-believing churches. And then, perplexed, we wonder why so many of God’s people are spiritually anemic, unstable, following divergent doctrines, and making shipwreck of their lives. This is not an unrealistically harsh appraisal of the present hour – but it is, the Bible declares, an indication of the nearing of the end of the age (2 Timothy 3:1-7; 4:1-4). Today, there is not so much a need to defend God’s Word as there is a need to proclaim it. Perhaps Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the prince of preachers, said it best. When asked if he defended the Word of God, Spurgeon responded, “Yes, the way I would defend a lion. I just open the cage and let it out.” God’s Word is eternal; it is true; it is alive and powerful and sharper than any twoedged sword. It need only be pulled from the scabbard and bared for use by a courageous band of believers; its hot, flashing blade will do the work. The Bible is the only thing that can stop the insane, out-of-control, spiraling descent of the planet Earth. May we be found faithful in living lives transformed by the eternally true and gloriously living Word of God! u

Middle East P Tenuous Peace Treaties n March 26, 1979, millions watched their TVs in fascination as Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat signed the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty in Washington, D.C. Considering the history of the two nations, this first official attempt at JewishArab peace was a shocking but welcome development, the hope being that Israel’s immediate neighbors would follow. Notwithstanding Jordan in 1994 – and the recent Abraham (peace) Accords initiated by former President Trump with some of the Gulf states and African nations – they haven’t. And though both peace agreements have held, they are tenuous as the Bible is clear that at the end of the age Israel will be abandoned (Jeremiah 12:7-9; Micah 5:3; Zechariah 14:2; Luke 13:34-35). In the minds of peace-seekers, such political goodwill between Israel, Egypt, and Jordan conjures visions of permanent reconciliation in the Middle East. But is true peace in the Middle East possible? The answer is, “Yes,” but it will never occur in this era of human history.

O

Egypt: A Primary Player in God’s Peace Plan In determining when peace will permeate the Middle East, we must look at two particular books of the Bible. The first is Exodus. It is stunning that modern-day Egypt was the first to make peace with modern-day Israel considering the ancient 18

hostility between them. As you recall from Exodus, Israel dwelt and was enslaved in Egypt for 430 years before God freed the Hebrews. When Israel was “reborn” in 1948, Egypt was her fiercest enemy, making the eventual peace treaty that much more astonishing. Perhaps this is the reason Egypt is promised such a shining future in the Millennial Kingdom – the 1,000-year reign of Christ which will be established on Earth following this era of human history and preceding the establishment of the eternal state. Regarding Egypt’s place in the Kingdom, we must look at the second book, Isaiah: In that day shall there be an altar to the Lord in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at the border thereof to the Lord … And the Lord shall be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians shall know the Lord in that day, and shall do sacrifice and oblation; yea, they shall vow a vow unto the Lord, and perform it (Isaiah 19:19, 21). The term “In that day” is the key to the time frame in question. “In that day” generally refers to one of two things: God’s judgment at the end of this age, or the period of time just following that judgment, the Millennial Kingdom. In other words, though the majority of blissful promises made in the Old Testament concern Israel, there are many others intended for other nations, and Egypt is one of them.

ZION’S FIRE | MARCH-APRIL 2022

MIDDLE EAST PEACE WILL PREVAIL

Peace Will Prevail A Worshiping Nation According to the passage, true worship of God will exist in Egypt, as indicated by the words “an altar to the Lord” (Isaiah 19:19). Reason dictates that if there is an altar, there must be a sacrificial system to go with it. There will be such a system in Israel during the Millennial Kingdom (Ezekiel 40-43). That system will extend to Egypt. What will be the reason for this sacrificial system in Egypt? “And the Lord shall be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians shall know the Lord in that day” (Isaiah 19:21). Egypt’s conversion, however, will come at a price: In that day shall Egypt be like unto women: and it shall be afraid and fear because of the shaking of the hand of the Lord of hosts, which he shaketh over it (Isaiah 19:16). As a result, Egypt will cry out to the one true God for deliverance, and He will deliver: And the Lord shall smite Egypt: he shall smite and heal it: and they shall return even to the Lord, and he shall be intreated of them, and shall heal them (Isaiah 19:22).

Assyria: Part of God’s Peace Plan Wonderfully, Middle East peace in the Millennial Kingdom will not be restricted to Israel and Egypt: In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians. In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land (Isaiah 19:23-24).

ZION’S FIRE | MARCH-APRIL 2022

Yes, Assyria. This is the same Assyria which boasted nefarious Nineveh as its capital, and later spread its tentacles to include barbaric Babylon. And, like Egypt, Assyria has been an ancient enemy of Israel. Assyria still is as it encompasses large land areas of modern-day Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Iran. And yet, during the Millennial Kingdom, this region – from Egypt to Assyria – will reside in peace, with Israel as “a blessing in the midst of the land.” Amazing! Considering what is happening in the Middle East today, the Isaiah passage seems but a dream which has no counterpart in reality. However, we must take God at His word. He has promised that a day is coming when Egypt-Israel-Assyria will form a triumvirate of lasting peace, the likes of which the world has never known. Of this “dream team” of peace, the Lord says: “... Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance” (Isaiah 19:25).

The Day Is Coming Such words are almost too staggering to believe, but believe we must. As the world continues its freefall to destruction, may all believers be heartened by this almost inconceivable fact: The region of the world which is now humanity’s greatest threat to peace will one day be the fountain from which all blessings flow through our soon-coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. Unquestionably, the Bible teaches there is coming a specific time of great adversity and divine judgment upon the earth, but along with it we are given the promise that one day there will be true and lasting peace in the Middle East. Middle East peace will really happen. So, believer, fight the good fight in Christ, His glorious day is coming! u

BRANCH – John 15:2

A

branch of something is NOT the main thing. For instance, the branch of a tree isn’t the main trunk and a branch office isn’t the main office. A branch is merely an extension of the main thing.

Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

20

Jesus told His disciples they were branches. HE was the main thing, and they were merely extensions of who He was. In John 15:1-2 Jesus said, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.” Jesus said, “Every branch in Me.” That’s an interesting analogy. As branches of a vine are anchored into the main vine, so the disciples of Jesus were anchored into Him. The word “branch” refers to “a limb or shoot.” Actually, this Greek word klema comes from the root verb klao, which means “to break” – specifically, to break off a piece of bread. In other words, a branch is

a piece of the main thing, like a piece of bread was once a part of the main loaf. Jesus is using the idea of a branch in a spiritual sense. Really, He is saying to His disciples, “You are a piece of Me. It’s as if someone broke off a part of Me and that part became you.” Cloning is big these days, and the idea of cloning is that a small piece of DNA can be taken from an individual to make an identical replica of that person. That’s the idea here. Spiritually, we’re a part of Jesus – a spiritual clone of our Savior so that people can see Jesus in us. He is the vine, and we are the branches. Can people see Christ in you? They can if you’re a real branch. u ZION’S FIRE | MARCH-APRIL 2022

A WORD FROM THE WORD

CORRECTION – 2 Timothy 3:16

G

etting on the right track is essential to ending up where you want to be. If you’re on the wrong track, you need to make an adjustment and correct your mistake.

For some people, that’s an easy thing; but for others, it’s a real challenge. Make no mistake about it, though, correction is essential and change is necessary. In 2 Timothy 3:16 we read, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” The Word of God is profitable for reproof and correction. Reproof is discovering what you did wrong; and correction means knowing how to get it right again. The Bible is what helps you do both. The word “correction” means “to straighten up.” It has the idea of reforming – of getting it right again – of making a course correction, from going the wrong way to going the right way. ZION’S FIRE | MARCH-APRIL 2022

I remember my mother telling me, “Danny, you straighten up! No more teasing your sister. Be good!” We’ve all had that experience. When you read the Word of God, it’s like hearing your mother tell you all over again, “Straighten up. Quit doing what’s wrong and start doing what’s right!” The Bible not only reproves us, it also corrects us – and that’s important. God not only points out our sin, for the purpose of reproving us – He also shows us the way of righteousness in order to get us on the right path. The Bible isn’t all negative – “Don’t, don’t, don’t!” It is also very positive and tells us the things that please God. The Scriptures are profitable for correction. Therefore, straighten up now. Get on the right track, and walk with Christ! u
