Zilco - Myler Bits: Catalogue and Dealer Handbook

The creators of Myler Bits - Ron, Dale and Bob Myler offer a philosophy behind every one of their bits. The bit is a communication tool, and to effectively communicate with a horse, the horse needs to be relaxed. To properly bit a horse, the rider needs a bit which allows the horse to be relaxed. The Mylers have designed an entire bitting system to effectively communicate with any horse at any level of training. Based on bitting a horse appropriately through his training, the system works by releasing points of pressure and using softer bits as the horse progresses. Because of the bit variations available, the system may seem complex, but it is really quite simple. Each mouthpiece is coordinated to a horse’s level of training which is generalised into three levels. The levels are used as a guide for bit selection as you match the horse and rider’s needs. Sales staff should familiarise themselves well with the Myler program and it’s philosophies, and be knowledgeable with regards to bits and bitting. We encourage all sales staff to read the Myler “The Level Best for Your Horse” book and watch the DVD.

There are some basics one needs to properly bit a horse using the Myler system.

• Familiarity with the horse’s mouth and points of pressure caused by the bit

• Familiarity with the basics of bit parts and measurements

• Familiarity with the features of Myler bits and how they work to achieve a relaxed and receptive horse

• The horse’s and the rider’s needs. How advanced is the horse’s training?

• Is there resistance? What kind of mouth does the horse have?

• How advanced are the rider’s skills?

This information can help sales people to assist the customer in selecting the proper Myler Bit. With the proper bit, the horse will be relaxed, ready and willing to receive the rider’s communication.

1. Tongue

This is the most sensitive part of the horse’s mouth. Traditional bits designed specifically to apply tongue pressure (eg: jointed snaffle) create a backward and downward pressure into the tongue when pressure is exerted on the reins. A Horse may evade this pressure by poking out his nose or coming behind the vertical, seeking his own relief.

If pressure is constantly maintained on the tongue, these bits can also prevent the horse from swallowing properly. If the horse is constantly working against pressure with his tongue, he builds up muscle tension and strength through his entire lower neck, which then causes the horse to overdevelop muscle on the underside of the neck instead of his top line, and it becomes more difficult for him to relax at the poll.

2. Bars

The bars are rather sensitive too, but most horses have much more tolerance for pressure on their bars than their tongue. Most of the traditional bits work off the bars in some way. Bits which use the bars put backward and downward pressure on top and/or downward and inward pressure on the sides of the bar, depending on the mouthpiece.

3. Poll

This is located at the second vertebrae, and is where the horse “breaks” or relaxes his head. Because of the design of many traditional bits, the horse may not have the desired relief from tongue or bar pressure when he is relaxed at the poll and thus the rider may find resistance when attempting to maintain the frame.

4. Curb/Chin

Most bits that apply curb pressure have shanks and are characterised by the use of curb or chin straps. The curb pressure is upward and forward on the chin groove where the mandible nerve is located. This pressure encourages the horse to break at the poll for relief. The leverage rolls the mouthpiece forward and downward.

5. Palate

Ported bits create palate pressure when the shanks are lifted, with the highest point of the port rolling into the palate. The degree to which a port affects the palate depends on palate height of the individual horse. If properly designed to complement the curve of the horse’s palate, the port creates a forward and downward pressure, encouraging the horse to tilt his head and break at the poll.

Regardless of whether we are talking about a “traditional” or a Myler bit, ALL will apply pressure at one or more of these “Points of Pressure”. The design of the bit and how it applies pressure is the most important consideration. The best designs apply pressure to the various points in such a way that it is most comfortable for the horse to work “On the bit” and to maintain his frame.

Understanding which mouthpieces apply which sort of pressure is key to working out what the signs of resistance are being caused by.

Knowing the equine mouth is crucial to proper bitting. Be familiar with the points of pressure caused by the bit.

The following diagrams will help to identify specific parts as referenced in this handbook and other Myler educational material.

1 Mouthpiece Measurement

Traditional Shank bits are measured laying flat as shown.

The mouthpiece measurement is taken from the inside of one cheek to the inside of the other cheek.

Myler Bits mouthpieces are measured with a curve in the mouthpiece as shown in (A).

Always allow 1/8” to 1/4” (3 mm to 6 mm) extra mouthpiece outside the horse’s lips at each side.

2 Cheek Measurement

Cheeks are measured from the top inside of the purchase ring, straight down to the same plane as the centre inside of the rein ring. This measures the difference from the bridle to the rein when it is fitted to the horse.

2 Ring Measurement

There are some common features throughout the Myler Bit™ range. Some of these features are available on all bits, while others are key features in some of Myler’s unique designs.

1. Mouthpiece Metals

Most Myler bits include a fine copper inlay to encourage salivation. Mouthpiece metals vary between English and Western bits. Most Western bits are made of Sweet Iron and copper inlay, while most English bits are made with Stainless Steel and copper inlay. Some solid Sweet Iron, Stainless Steel and Cyprium mouthpieces are also available.

Stainless Steel A rust free metal alloy known for its strength and durability. Stainless Steel has little taste and can dry the mouth.

Copper Inlay Small strips of copper are placed in the mouthpiece to encourage salivation, creating a softer mouth (see image)

Sweet Iron A strong metal with a sweet taste as it slowly oxidises or rusts. Encourages the horse to salivate, creating a softer mouth. Note that it is normal for a sweet iron bit to appear black or rusty as it ages. This is the nature of the metal.

Cyprium Gold in colour, a composite metal of brass and copper alloy. It combines the strength of brass with the palatable qualities of copper. It encourages salivation, creating a softer mouth.

2. Curved Mouthpiece

This permits the horse to swallow more easily, encouraging the horse to relax. Many traditional bits lie flat on the horse’s tongue, restricting swallowing and often leading to resistance of the bit. With curved mouthpieces, Myler Bits distribute pressure more evenly across the tongue than traditional designs.

3. Independent Side Movement

Many Myler mouthpieces are available with the “Independent Side Movement” feature. Information regarding which bit models are available with the Independent Side Movement feature is shown on the “Myler Bit Mouthpieces” page.

The Independent Side Movement feature allows a rider to isolate one side of the bit. With traditional bits, a rider is not able to cause pressure to only one side, leading to mis-communication and resistance. With Independent Side Movement, a rider can choose to affect only one side, assisting in lifting a shoulder, or for balancing, bending and collection.

4. Pinch, Resist and Release

This teaches the horse to relax at the poll and stay in his “comfort zone”. With rein pressure, the mouthpiece collapses inwards onto the bars and rolls downwards onto the tongue. Once the horse relaxes at the poll, the pressure is released and the horse learns to stay in the pressure-free position.

5. Hooks

Some Myler bits are available with hooks for connection of reins and bridle cheeks. These offer leverage for models that are designed to be “direct action” bits. This feature rolls the mouthpiece forward and downward onto the tongue and bars with rein pressure, encouraging the horse to relax at the poll. Most traditional ring bits only apply backward pressure into the tongue and bars, which can lead a horse to resist.

The bit attaches to the bridle and reins, with the rein or cheekpiece going from the outside of the bit, through the slot and fastening as shown. The bit will appear like a traditional ring bit from the side. With Full cheek bits that only have one hook, it is important to use a bit keeper to secure the position of the bridle.

Curved Mouthpiece

Bit resistance signs are an indication that the current bit is causing discomfort via excessive pressure on the tongue and/or bars of the mouth.

There are many signs of resistance. Some physical ailments can cause the horse to be unwilling to work. Other factors such as stiff hands or ill-fitting saddles can also have an effect. It is important to rule out these factors and recognise the signs of resistance brought about by improper bitting.

Bit resistance signs are an indication that the current bit is causing discomfort via excessive pressure on the tongue and/or bars of the mouth. When a horse is resisting the bit, he is concentrating on what is happening in his mouth, which means that he is not listening properly to what the rider is trying to communicate.

Some of the common signs of bit resistance can be recognised by the answers to the following questions.

Does the horse:

• Drop behind the bit?

• Go above the bit?

• Lean on the bit? Grab the bit or chew on it constantly?

• Run through the bit and/or refuse to stop?

• Drop his shoulder?

This horse, being ridden in a “regular” bit is showing signs of resistance.

Fitted with an appropriate model of Myler bit, the horse is now relaxed at the poll and working ON the bit. Overall, it is better balanced and is moving more freely through the shoulder.

The first recommendation for resistance is to go softer. Offer the horse a bit with fewer points of pressure. Some suggestions are:

• For a horse who drops behind the bit, try a bit with less tongue pressure and possibly Independent Side Movement.

• For a horse who goes above the bit, try a bit with tongue pressure and tongue relief

• For a horse who does not stop, consider a shank or combination bit with leverage pressure and mouthpieces offering some tongue, bar and palate pressure.

• For a horse with an over active mouth, look for a bit which offers fewer points of pressure, especially tongue pressure.

• For a horse who drops his shoulder, select a bit with Independent Side Movement.

From this information, it is possible to narrow down a range of mouthpiece types that will address the resistance problems being experienced.

The appendix in the back of the Myler educational book “The Level Best for Your Horse” details the functions of each mouthpiece and what behaviours they are designed to address.

Myler bits mouthpieces are chosen according to the horse’s training and experience as shown below:

2 Offer a variety of pressure points to take the horse as soft as they will allow. Use mostly bar pressure, with the mouthpiece rolling downward on the bars.

3 May offer palate pressure depending on port height.

4 May feature hooks and/or offer independent side movement, allowing the rider to isolate and lift one side of the bit.

May offer curb or poll pressure, depending on the cheek or shank design.

Dispersed pressure for a kinder, softer message.

Utilising various pressure points, Myler Combination Bits offer simultaneous interaction of the mouthpiece, curb strap and noseband. When rein pressure is applied or released, the Myler Combination Bit automatically disperses or releases direct action and leverage pressure to the horse’s mouth, chin, nose and poll.

Pressure is spread between the four areas instead of concentrated mostly on the mouth as with traditional bits, allowing the rider to send a softer and kinder message.

One of the special features of these bits is the “free play” allowed by the sliding mouthpiece. When light rein pressure is applied, the horse has an opportunity to respond before the mouthpiece contacts a “ring stop” and completely engages, applying more downward pressure.

By applying mouth, nose, poll and curb pressure, the Myler Combination Bit offers humane and effective control and communication for horses at all experience levels.

Because Myler Combination Bits offer the horse a “comfort zone” when the horse is light, they encourage horses to relax at the poll and therefore are excellent for all levels of horses, from training to finished.

When fitted, the noseband should rest above the soft break of the nose. It should be noted that because of the height of the cheekpiece on combination bits, it is likely that riders will need to put additional holes in the cheek straps of their bridles and/or get shorter cheeks for their bridles.

Keep plenty of Books and Book/DVD packs in stock

Don’t underestimate the power of these materials. The education of the customer in the philosophy of the Myler system and how they can more effectively communicate with their horse is key. The better educated they are regarding how each bit works, the more open they are to trying it for themselves.

Keep a good selection of the recommended mouthpieces in stock

If you don’t have it, you can’t sell it. Many sales of Myler have been lost by not having the most popular mouthpiece selections available for customers to try. Our sales people can help you with selecting a range of popular bits, suitable for the type of clientele you cater to.

Don’t attempt to “bit” the customer’s horse

We can’t emphasise this enough. Help the customer by explaining the basics of tongue pressure and tongue relief. Help them figure out what level of bit they are currently using (according to the Myler Level system), what signs of resistance they are experiencing and what level of bit from the Myler range would be most suitable.

Give them choices, but there is no definitively correct answer. This is where the Rental system kicks in. From the choices you offer, the customer can then try some options out.

Just as it is important to select an appropriate mouthpiece for the horse’s requirements, it is also important to coordinate the rider’s hands and chosen discipline.

Believe it or nor, there is some logic behind the way Myler codes are applied. In many/most cases, it is far easier for all of us, if you use the Myler number when ordering (or referring to) a particular model. The Myler descriptions are so complex that even a small difference in the wording can make a HUGE difference in the bit itself.

At the very least, you should always provide us with:

• The FULL description of the cheekpiece or the cheekpiece code (eg: “J” - Eggbutt with Hooks)

• The Mouthpiece CODE (eg: MB04)

• The Mouth Size (eg: 5”)

From this information we can easily piece together the exact bit you are looking for.

Even if a customer only gives you a Myler code for the bit they are after, it becomes quite easy to “decode the code”. A Myler bit code ALWAYS starts with “89”. This part of the code will not change between models.

Note: All Myler Mouthpieces are 12mm in diameter - unless otherwise indicated.

It is stongly recommended that the horse is trained at home in the Myler bit that is most appropriate to his own needs and level of training. The horse should then do his test in the most suitable “Dressage Legal” bit as shown below. Most horses adapt very well to this practice. They continue to advance in their training at home and benefit from spending the majority of time in the bit that is most suited.

According to EA National Dressage Rules, the minimum diameter of the mouthpiece is 10mm for Ponies including Young Pony competitions and minimum 12mm for Horses (14mm in Young Horse competitions - see EA rule 9.1.2). All Myler Mouthpieces are 12mm in diameter - unless otherwise indicated.
