Heatherwick Studio’s “ Gigantic Planted Pergola” in Toranomon-Azabudai district in Tokyo.

01 Balance & Lineweight The project by Heatherwick Studio is chosen. An abstract art of lines, planes and solids is derived from the Gigantic Planted Pergola in Toranomon-Azabudai district. This is the first exploration in producing a balance art made up of the simplest elements: dots, lines, planes and solids.

Different line weight is applied to depict more interesting artwork.

Part of the abstract art with balance of lines, planes and solids are Cropped into a square.

02 Design Principle & Transformation The square later undergoes a series of transformation: rotation, overlap and enlargement to bring out the sense of movement. A spiral form is finally achieved with a sense of rotation into infinity.

03 Collage & Materiality Using the Line Abstract, a collage is created by using materials with its own original color. The choice of material has to be wise, considering the texture, color and effect that would be brought out. Red color cotton thread was chosen to represent the entire spiral movement. Red with its striking color would draw attention from the viewers.

Green and black threads are used to highlight the planes surrounding the spiral red color thread.

Wooden skewers are used to fill up any gaps, at the same time pointing at the ‘infinity’ where the spiral movement is disappearing.

01 Deriving Concept Based on Story This is our first contact with concept. We are informed that each project and artwork we are developing should be derived from concepts that would eventually pave our way towards the end result.

In this case, we are to make up a short story. Based on the story, we construct our own conceptual sketch and later translate it into 3D concept model to better represent out story.

My story is titled ‘Narrow Squeak’ as it is a short story recapping a narrow escape from a plane tragedy with the injection of sci-fi element. Therefore, my conceptual sketch represents a series of hardships before finally escaping the danger. The pointy triangles represents the characters while the squares represents the hardships. There are a lot of sharp geometry used to represent the danger.

03 Model Making By applying what we learn in first project, we are to present a balance of lines, planes, solids and voids in our Final Model. Not to mention, our design should embrace design principles as well. In this case, my design principle is movement.

The Cat-Taker Cattery: Novaturient

Conceptual Model

01 User Analysis This is our first project with a determined user- felines and collaborative project with SPCA to provide a conducive cattery for the felines to rest and move around. It measures up to 2m in height, 2m in length and 2m in width.

02 Novaturient Novaturient means a strong desire to seek changes in life. Unlike typical cattery, this cattery is a new approach of designing cattery The conceptual model concludes the design approach by designing three major space which are space for play, stray and stay.

The design is inspired by the saying: ‘A cat has nine lives; for three he plays, for three he strays; and for the last three he stays.’

01 Concept: Water Lilies Water lilies are chosen to be the concept of the flexible kiosk. The gentle bloom of the water lilies located at the site inspired the mechanism of the kiosk.

A simple conceptual model is made to represent the idea. The ‘petals’ revolve around a central axis creates a simple yet elegant mechanism for the operation of the kiosk.

02 Mechanism - Affordances When in closed form, Liliana measures up to 2m x 2m x 2m while in open form, it measures u to 2m x 3m x 3m where the height remains unchanged. When designing the mechanism of operation, the affordances are considered to ensure users are able to operate the kiosk without any difficulty. The kiosk can shelter 3-5 person when fully open.

01 Client/ Researcher: Renault Renault is chosen as the client of the cabin. Renault’s most famous car- Renault Trezor inspired the conceptual sketches below. A series of hexagonal fin-like shapes on the skin of the car is transform into various possible geometry and aligned on streamline axis.

01 V Shade House The signature V shape timber louvers on the façade will be a focal point of the building as well as to shade direct sunlight from East. The V shape is inspired by the V shape leaves of the rain trees that exist on the site.

02 Site A Coach’s Quarter is to be built inside Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) to accommodate a residential area for the coaches that visit UPM for seasonal training event.

03 Requirement The requirements include 4-bedroom suites along with common areas like living area, entertainment area, dining, etc. The built-up area measures up to 150sqm.

The site has a gentle slope from West towards East and a steep slope from South to North.

01 Putra V Shade Gym Putra V Shade Gym is a gym designed for UPM athletes to better train themselves in a conducive environment. Besides, this Gym holds community spaces for students as well which promotes students’ interactions.

The use of greeneries on the building blend the building into the site.
