THE LIU

“Through the Fire: Resist, Persist, Insist”

On Sunday, February 23, 2025, the youth at Zion Hill delivered an inspiring presentation celebrating African American history. The theme of the event was "Through the Fire: Resist, Persist, Insist," developed and curated by Sis. Elisa Dixon. This powerful theme drew inspiration from the scripture in The Book of Daniel 3: 16-18, illustrating the resilience of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego as they faced trials.

The program commenced with an engaging Call to Worship, proclaiming, "Extra, Extra, Read All About It!" Following the prayer, the Kiroho Dancers performed a moving rendition of “It Is Well with My

Soul,” capturing the struggles faced by the biblical trio when they were cast into the fiery furnace.

A heartfelt welcome was delivered by one of our Azizi sisters, and 2 of our teens gave an occasion that reminded everyone of our inherent strength to endure and overcome challenges. Throughout the program, we experienced "If Black was a Color", “The Sound of Resistance,” “The Sound of Persistence,” and “The Sound of Insistence,” as shared by our talented youth.

The Azizi Children’s Choir and Generation 8 Choir uplifted the audience with their harmonious message: to remain thankful, steadfast, grateful and we should

not let anyone turn us around, for we serve an amazing God. During the event, youth shared their personal stories, detailing their own journeys of perseverance and determination.

Ultimately, the youth challenged us to emulate those who stood up to King Nebuchadnezzar, reminding us that even amid adversity, we must resist complacency, persist through challenges, and insist on justice for everyone. Kiroho Dancers danced to a rendition of "Precious Lord" reminding us once again that with the support of our precious Lord, we are assured that God will guide us through every trial we face. n —Reverend Brenton Cox

Just A Season

As we journey through one of the most turbulent seasons in this nation’s history, I want to remind all of us that it is just that – a season. Despite a puppet president who blindly covets the contemptible position of dictator; despite an unbridled billionaire who, apparently void of conscience, has been given the power to upend, and in many cases destroy, the lives of millions of people; despite a political party who has the apparatus to stop both the would-be dictator and the boisterous billionaire but refuse to use it, terrified of a negative outcome in the next election; despite a diabolical group of determined ideologues who, following their fiendish Project 2025 agenda, have seized this opportunity to impose their morally perverse will upon the country and in some ways upon the world; despite a sizeable portion of the American electorate, who have not yet awakened to the dire nature of these present circumstances and who do not yet realize that they too can become victims in this atrocious process; despite all of this turmoil, strife and inordinate display of insatiable greed, this is still just a season.

Seasons can bring excruciatingly harsh conditions and even cause tragic casualties; nevertheless, they pass with the steady march of time. They do not possess the ability to continue indefinitely, though they appear forceful in operations and expansive in presence. Seasons have expiration dates – they indeed end. And so will this one, although it sometimes seems so very entrenched, comprehensive and blatantly evil. The best-selling author and philanthropist, Sarah Ban Breathnach understood this and thus wrote, “The dry seasons in life do not last. The spring rains will come again.”

Let us, therefore, not treat this season as if it has permanence. We are a people of faith, and we insist that this attribute belongs most fundamentally to God and to those to whom God graciously grants it. Instead of sinking into a horrible pit of despair over our present seasonal situation, we should walk boldly in divine hope, tenaciously calling out, confronting, and combating all that opposes God’s justice, peace and love.

During our trek through this troublesome and trying time, may we recall the encouraging words of the Hebrew prophet who declared: “Though the fig tree does not blossom, and no fruit is on the vines; though the produce of the olive fails, and the fields yield no food; though the flock is cut off from the fold, and there is no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will exult in the God of my salvation.” (Habakkuk 3:17-18). n Pastor Parker

Faith & Finances: Trying and Trusting

This year’s Faith & Finances event was an overwhelming success, bringing together more than 360 attendees for a morning of empowerment, education, and inspiration. Participants enjoyed a delicious breakfast before engaging in a diverse selection of 11 dynamic workshops, each designed to provide valuable insights, tools, and resources to help them elevate their financial well-being. Each attendee selected three workshops tailored to their interests. A few attendees and facilitators shared their experience from the session they attended.

Testimonials from Presenters, Facilitators, and Attendees

The impact of the event was evident in the positive feedback received from both presenters and participants. Here are some highlights:

Rob Pugh – Workshop Facilitator, “How’s the Real Estate Market”

“I truly enjoyed working with the Faith & Finances committee for the first time. The

team did a phenomenal job organizing the event and ensuring a seamless experience for facilitators. The QR code system at workshop entrances was an excellent addition, making it easy for attendees to provide feedback. My co-facilitator, Jasmine Mathis, delivered a highly informative and engaging presentation. The audience was engaged, asked numerous questions, and even stayed after the session to continue the discussion. I look forward to future opportunities to work with this committee.”

Gwen Daniels – Workshop Facilitator, “Homeownership and Mortgage Process”

“I had the privilege of co-facilitating with Mr. Carl Robins, a Vice President Mortgage Banker at South State Bank. His expertise and approachable style made the complex process of homeownership accessible and engaging for attendees. Many participants expressed their gratitude, stating that this workshop was life-changing and provided them with essential knowledge to pursue homeownership. It

was heartening to see such enthusiasm and appreciation for the church’s commitment to financial literacy.”

Bradis Jimmerson – Workshop Facilitator

“I was honored to assist with this year’s Faith & Finances event. Upon entering the classroom, I found that Mr. Kalvin Bennett and Ms. Koreen Gibbs had beautifully set up the room, complete with banners, business cards, and magnets. Zion Hill’s IT Ministry also played a crucial role in ensuring a smooth technical setup. The energy in the room was fantastic, attendees came eagerly to learn, asking thoughtful questions about tax returns, retirement accounts, and rollover penalties. The QR code system encouraged valuable feedback, reinforcing another successful year for Faith & Finances.”

Paul B. Lee – Georgia SHIP Counselor “If I had to rate this event on a scale from 1 to 5, I would proudly give it a 5-star

rating. Having participated in these events for several years, I can confidently say that this was one of the most well-organized and engaging sessions I’ve attended. I look forward to next year’s event!”

Norma Borom – Attendee

“I wish I had met Dr. Labat years ago. My attitude toward financial planning was once indifferent, but Dr. Wendy’s guidance has encouraged me to think critically, develop a plan, and work toward a more secure financial future. Her faith, determi-

nation, and personal success serve as an inspiring foundation for anyone looking to strengthen their faith and finances, regardless of their age.”

Looking Ahead

Pastor Parker’s leadership and vision have been instrumental in fostering a culture of financial stewardship within our faith community. His unwavering commitment to equipping believers with the tools for both spiritual and financial growth continues to inspire and guide us forward.

The success of this year’s Faith & Finances event is a testament to the dedication of Pastor Parker’s vision, the organizing committee, presenters, and attendees who are committed to financial empowerment and spiritual growth. As we reflect on this year’s event, we eagerly anticipate continuing the journey toward financial wellness and faith-based prosperity in the years to come.

May God continue to bless and guide us as we strive to be faithful stewards of His provisions. n

ONI's Young Adult Game Night

ONI's

Young Adult Game Night

on Friday, February 21st was nothing short of a blast! More than just fun and games, it was a powerful reminder of the importance of community and belonging. In a world filled with responsibilities, it’s refreshing to take a break, laugh, and connect with your church family. And the best part? Our community is growing and on the come-up!

A huge thank you to our fearless leader and president, Bro. Simeon Hendricks, for his leadership in

making this night possible. We kicked things off with an opening prayer before diving into #CultureTags—a high-energy game that had everyone thinking fast! With categories ranging from “TV & Film” to “Church Sayings,” the competition was fierce. If you haven’t played before, imagine trying to guess phrases like "IABAHF" (I Am Blessed and Highly Favored) with only

the first letters as clues. Let’s just say, Sis. Sanari Hendricks and Sis. Carla Brown dominated the game, keeping everyone on their toes! (Shoutout to

Sis. Janay Mosley for putting us on to this gem.)

From there, we spread out for rounds of Spades, Checkers, Scrabble, and Out of Bounds (aka Black Taboo), filling the room with laughter, strategy, and a little friendly rivalry.

All in all, it was an incredible night filled with fun, love, and community. If you missed this one, don’t worry, we’d love to see more 20-and-30-somethings at the next event. Trust us, you won’t want to miss it! n

Celebrating 31 years of Dedicated Service by Pastor, Dr. Aaron L. Parker and First Lady Shelia S. Parker

Members of Zion Hill Baptist Church are honored to celebrate Pastor Dr. Aaron L. Parker and First Lady Mrs. Shelia Smith Parker for their 31 years of leadership and faithful service to our church and community! This year’s theme: “A Faith Walk of Sowing, Serving & Shepherding” is appropriate as they have sowed into the ministries and served faithfully. As a loving Shepherd and Anointed Servant Leader, Pastor Parker has been “faithful over a few things” and God has made him a Shepherd over many (Matthew 25:21). Since January 1994, as the tenth Pastor of Zion Hill Baptist Church, Pastor and Mrs. Parker along with their children, Aaron Larry, Jr. and Asha Liana, have dedicated their lives to following God’s commandments to love and serve. Their precious granddaughter, Laila, has joined in this walk as a young disciple of Christ.

In Hebrews 11:1, faith is defined as, “the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen”. With divine wisdom and applying stewardship biblical

principles, Pastor Parker sowed the seeds of tithing based on faith and created an infrastructure to operate and handle the church business and finances, which has led to financial stability and transparency among members. Led by the Holy Spirit, during an economic recession, Pastor Parker, a Prayer Warrior, along with Mrs. Parker, together with their unwavering faith and trust in God, successfully faced and overcame many challenges. Under his vision, Zion Hill’s current location was built on 43.5 acres of land, 15 years ago, to accommodate the church’s growing membership, expand programs and meet the needs of the church family and the community. Under Pastor Parker’s extraordinary leadership and accomplishments, he has sown the seeds of faith and laid the foundation for teaching and preaching for salvation through Jesus Christ in accordance with God’s will and His Word.

As a powerful teacher and preacher, Pastor continues to speak with fervor and

conviction, moving our congregation to “boost our faith” and increase our personal faith walk with God. He is obedient to the great commission to “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit; teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

Pastor Parker’s visionary leadership and desires to provide opportunities for members to enhance their services are achieved in the Love Center, our multi-purpose facility that provides: The School of Love, Learning and Service (SOLLAS); community outreach, after school athletics, recreation and fitness; JOY (Just Older Youth) for Life; Seniors Ministry Activities and Services, Summer Enrichment Programs for the Youth, meetings and fellowship.

With faith, grace and poise, Mrs. Parker has made distinguished

Welcoming Our Newly Baptized Members to Zion Hill Baptist Church

On February 9, 2025, we joyfully welcomed Laila Harris, Donald Menifee, Michael Menifee, and Caira Jones into the family of Zion Hill Baptist Church through the sacred ritual of baptism. Their decision to publicly affirm their faith marks a powerful step in their spiritual journey, one that we celebrate with gratitude and love.

Baptism is more than a ritual—it is a profound symbol of renewal, rebirth, and belonging. As they emerged from the waters, they embraced a new chapter in Christ, cleansed and strengthened by the Holy Spirit. This sacred tradition is deeply rooted in our African heritage, where

water has long been a source of spiritual purification and transformation. From the ancient Nile River of Egypt to the cleansing rituals of West African traditions, baptism carries the legacy of our ancestors who understood water as a vessel of divine grace.

As a church family, we stand beside our newly baptized members, praying for their continued growth, faith, and service in God’s kingdom. May their journey be filled with wisdom, strength, and the unwavering love of Christ. Welcome to Zion Hill—we are blessed to walk this path with you!

Passionate and Purposeful

On Wednesday evening, February 26, 2025, the atmosphere was filled with anticipation and excitement as Sis. Sheree Dickson (above left) and Sis. Adina Martin (above right) continued their journeys as ministerial candidates, delivering their initial sermons passionately and purposefully. This marked a personal milestone for each candidate and a significant moment for the congregation. As we witnessed these inspiring beginnings, it was clear that both ministers were stepping boldly into the work God had prepared for them, with hearts full of conviction and a deep commitment to spreading His word.

seeking her ministry calling. Sis. Dickson's inspiring initial sermon, "Preparing for the Promise," was grounded in Genesis 12:6-8, where she recounted God's call to

John 14:27, reminding us that God's peace accompanies those who trust His promises.

As he introduced Sis. Martin, Pastor Parker shared her struggle with accepting her calling. He likened it to Jacob's wrestling with the angel, with both ultimately recognizing the necessity of obedience to God's call. Sis. Martin's sermon, "Standing Firm in Hard Places," drew from 2 Chronicles 20:1-19, telling the story of King Jehoshaphat's victory through faith in God. Acknowledging the human tendency to fight in difficult times, she stressed the importance of yielding to God. Her uplifting message outlined three key strategies for standing firm – inquire of the Lord, take your position in the Lord, and worship God. Before taking her seat, Sis. Martin reminded us that while we are engaged in spiritual warfare, we must not forget that the appearance of the impossible never diminishes God's power to deliver.

Both messages were more than sermons; they were powerful declarations of faith and obedience to God's calling. As he

This marked a personal milestone for each candidate and a significant moment for the congregation.

In his introduction of Sis. Dickson, Pastor Parker highlighted her unwavering passion for God, noting how her divine fire compelled her to act after four years of

Abram (later Abraham) and his journey to the Promised Land. She emphasized God's faithfulness in fulfilling His promises when we remain steadfast, stressing that preparation is key to receiving God's promises. As we wait in this season of preparation, we must be willing to endure the weight of His blessings. God never forgets His promises and ensures His gifts are protected from misuse or abuse. We must also be ready and willing to go when He calls. Sis. Dickson concluded with the Good News from

prepared to confer the candidates' licensing, Pastor Parker requested the congregation to signify their approval and support by standing. The congregation responded with unanimous agreement. We joyfully welcomed Minister Sheree Dickson and Minister Adina Martin to the vineyard, trusting that God will continue to guide and empower them as they fulfill their callings and serve His people with faith and dedication.

Faith-Based Nutrition

Our daily routine consists of our nutrition and what we consume physically and spiritually. Nutrition involves consuming food and other nourishments that help support life. Balanced nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle by providing the necessary vitamins, minerals, and energy from different food groups. A balanced diet lowers the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers.

A Balanced Diet and Healthy Living

A balanced diet applies to a dietary pattern that includes a variety of foods from different food groups in appropriate proportions to meet our bodies’ nutritional needs. These

food groups consist of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, low-fat dairy products, and healthy fats. Fruits and vegetables provide an abundance of vitamins and fiber. Whole grains deliver complex carbohydrates, fiber, and vitamin B. Lean proteins are essential for muscle growth and repair. Additionally, low-fat dairy products provide calcium, vitamin D and protein. These are the foods God has given us for our health and well-being. And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good” (Genesis 1:11, ESV).

Nutrition and our faith in God, play significant roles in maintaining our health

and well-being. Be mindful of what you consume and treat your body as a temple. Consuming a balanced diet and God’s word will support our growth physically, spiritually, and mentally. “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4, ESV). n

contributions to the church ministries, and profoundly affected church members and the community. As the founder of the SIS (Sisters in Sync) ministry, with its mission to empower women to serve in the spirit of sisterhood, model Christian principles and exemplify qualities of virtuous women, she has contributed significantly through the years. As the Ministry Leader Coordinator for the dynamic Rites of Passage program for the past 26 years, Mrs. Parker has impacted lives of many teenagers in their development and transformation into young men and women. Through the years, the program, developed in the context and spirit of traditional African custom, helped transition more than a thousand young females into womanhood and young males into manhood.

During the past thirty-one years, as the Shepherd of Zion Hill, Pastor Parker has served as the catalyst for church

growth. Membership has grown to over 5,000 and innovative spiritual and educational programs have been implemented. Under his divine guidance, programs increased to more than 50 community outreach ministries; children, youth and young adult ministries expanded, Christian educational, enrichment and community programs grew and continues to do so; scholarships to high school graduates and students attending colleges and universities and financial support to Atlanta’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities escalated; and support provided to the Community Development Corporation, which serves the needs of women and children, flourished. Community outreach is a priority and all ministries are committed to serving. Donations of over $6.7 million have been provided for outreach.

As faithful servants, Pastor and Mrs. Parker, dutifully serve within the church, in the communities and in our motherland.

We are blessed to have a Pastor who provides services for members through all seasons of life from babies to seasoned saints, during times of joys and bereavements and for those with benevolent needs, as well as, communities affected by major natural disasters. They traveled across the continent in support of the “Mission of Hope Meal program for children in Folah Bong County, Liberia, West Africa, in which our church provides two meals a day, five days a week to young students there.

We are thankful for God’s anointed, faithful servant leader, Pastor Dr. Aaron L. Parker, our Shepherd, and First Lady Shelia Smith Parker, a Virtuous Woman, as they continue to sow, plant good seeds of righteousness and serve faithfully. They exemplify “living to love and loving to serve”, we are indeed blessed by their faith walk and service to God! n
