A BUILDING BOOM INDEED!!!

I

t was truly an honor to serve as Principal of the 2024 Vacation Bible School. This year we really shook things up as we focused on building Christ-like character in our homes, church and communities. Our Theme this year was “A Building BOOM in Fruitful City” and our Theme Scripture came from Galatians 5:22-23 (NRSV): “By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

There is no law against such things. Our goal was to make every student feel welcome and to bring our theme to life. The Beautification Ministry provided the most uniquely attractive display of a fruit spread at the entryway centered between two Wel-

come Banners produced by our Graphics Designer. We also hung Welcome Banners from the ceiling in the Love Center Upper and Lower level. Every student received a “BOOM Badge” with one fruit of the Spirit highlighted on that badge. Each person was asked to wear their badge nightly–these BOOM Badges served as a reminder that God has given all of us access to Christ-like character by way of His Spirit that helps us make this world a better place no matter where we are.

From the youth to the adults, each lesson focused on building Christ-like character that makes us better representatives of Christ no matter where we are.

Our youth lessons focused on the fruit

of the Spirit which we all should aspire to live by. Each lesson was brought to life with teaching tools that included videos, karaoke, activity books, Power Points and arts & crafts. The youth teachers were very excited and every one of them worked hard in their planning to give our youth the best experience in the five days we had.

The adult classes were just as exciting and the adult teachers were excellent in their preparation, creativity and the delivery of each topic discussed nightly. The Book titled “Building A City on A Hill: African American Communities of Purpose.”

They covered topics like: “Build on Jesus" which focused on Christian discipleship (continued on page 3)

A Simple Invite

n the first chapter of John’s gospel (43-51), we read the account of Jesus calling a man named Philip to follow him. Without any comments regarding the exchange between the two, the narrator, after identifying Philip’s hometown as Bethsaida, communicates

that he went and found Nathanael and told him about Jesus, who was from Nazareth.

Having obviously heard of the tainted reputation this little village in the district of Galilee, Nathanael asked, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip replied, “Come and see.” From this simple invite, Nathanael also became a devout follower of Jesus.

I want to encourage each member of the Zion Hill family to extend a simple invite to someone to “come and see” – come and see what is happening in this faith community to improve and enhance people’s lives; come and see our love for one another and willingness to serve inside and beyond our immediate fellowship; come and see how we attempt to address some of the needs of all generations as they deal with their own particular challenges; come and see the integrity with which we try to carry out all aspects of ministry.

Such a simple invitation requires no detailed analysis or meticulous preparation. You only need to tell others what you have experienced and suggest that they come and find out for themselves. Indeed, it might be the simplicity and openness of this kind of request that has the most appeal, for it permits people to make their own discoveries and draw their own conclusions in deciding whether this ministry meets their needs. For the rest of this year, let us “Shake It Up!” with the practice of a simple invite to family members, friends, and even some strangers as the opportunity allows. This could go a long way in helping to improve conditions in an all-too-often troubled world and to correspondingly build up God’s Beloved Community. n —Pastor Parker

and the cost involved when we choose to follow Christ; another topic was, “Building Strong Families” which focused on commitment as an essential characteristic that binds families together and how our covenant relationship with God establishes our identity and purpose. There were also other topics our teachers had to choose from such as “Skills to Build”, “Building God’s House”, Joshua’s Building Blocks” and more. Students in all the adult classes were attentive, engaging and consistent in their attendance. Every student was able to take home a Student Workbook. We ended up with a total attendance of approximately 300 Youth & 557 Adult students. Praise the Lord, who does ALL things well!! We had a Building BOOM indeed!

With that said, I would like to personally thank the Planning Team who were willing vessels for God’s use and eager to help in whatever way they could. To EVERY teacher, from youth to adults, thank you for the sacrifices of your time, talent and even some of you, your treasure– you made sure each student walked away with lessons learned and an awesome expe(continued on page 4)

To EVERY Volunteer from the Registration Team to the Greeters to the Hall Monitors and everyone in between–thanks for making the load lighter for all involved as you served in your appointed areas to the best of your abilities. The Arts & Crafts were off the charts, thanks to Sister Ramona Benson and her entire team who served to make sure students had wonderful crafts to take home nightly. To the Special Needs teachers who stepped up and stepped in to give our special needs children the help

they needed during their VBS experience your service was greatly appreciated.

There are so many moving parts that go into having a great and fulfilling time at VBS and we want to thank those who served in other supportive roles: Bro. John Brown & Facilities Team for setting everything up as requested, Rev Cox & the Youth Ministry, Chef Jacques & the Culinary Ministry for great food every night, Dr. Sarah Haynes & the Seeds of Love Ministry for donating seeds for our youth to plant, Sis Clyreon Harris & Joy For Life Ministry for putting together 1000 BOOM Badges,

Aretha Ragland & the Beautification Ministry, Bro. Nick Bartley our Graphic Designer, Photography Ministry, Bro. Alvin Leon & Media Ministry, Bro. Fred Bryan & Music Ministry and to Sis. Important Facts on Gut Health

T

he gut (gastrointestinal tract) contains trillions of microscopic organisms (various species of bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites) that can be divided into harmful and helpful. These organisms make up what is referred to as the gut microbiome. Achieving a balance of helpful and harmful organisms in the gut is important for gut health, which in turn impacts one’s overall health.

The gut microbiome plays a role in the digestion and absorption of nutrients, production of vitamins, excretion/elimination of waste and protection of the body by boosting the immune system and eliminating harmful agents that are ingested. Scientific evidence suggests that maintaining a healthy gut microbiome may even protect against several inflammatory diseases, but additional research is needed to confirm whether this is true.

Taking antibiotics may lead to unfavorable changes in the gut microbiome, particularly if antibiotics are used frequently or for prolonged periods.

Eating large amounts of processed food can also lead to an imbalance between healthy and unhealthy organisms in the gut.

Signs of an Unhealthy Gut n Frequent episodes of stomach discomfort, bloating or gas n Change in bowel habits (diarrhea or constipation) n Heartburn and/or acid reflux n Getting ill after eating certain foods (food intolerance is different from food allergies) n Severe cravings n Headaches n Mood swings or irritability n Difficulty sleeping Strategies to Promote Gut Health To promote a healthy balance of gut

microbiomes, limit intake of the following: n Foods high in saturated fat n Artificial sweeteners and foods high in natural sugar n Deli meats n Canned/packaged foods n Emulsified foods (examples include mayonnaise, mustard, salad dressings, margarine, peanut butter, coffee creamer, ice cream, toffee, caramel and some chocolates) Probiotics are foods and/or supplements containing live microorganisms which maintain or improve the healthy bacteria in the gut. Prebiotics are foods that nourish the probiotics in the gut. Consuming probiotics

and prebiotics can have a favorable impact on gut health however, eating excessive amounts of probiotics may result in bloating. Probiotic foods include yogurt with live cultures, sauerkraut, pickles, kimchi and kombucha.

Prebiotic foods include whole grains, soybeans, legumes, bananas, berries, artichokes, asparagus, leafy green vegetables, onions and garlic.

A diet rich in fiber helps to promote a healthy gut microbiome.

2024 Annual Church-Wide Fun Day Picnic

T

he 2024 Annual Church-Wide Fun Day Picnic was shaken up in conjunction with our church’s 2024 Theme: “Shake It Up!” The time of the event was changed to: 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., a late evening start time instead of our usual 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. timeframe!

On Saturday, June 8, 2024, after four days of Intense and Adventurous Bible Study during our Annual Vacation Bible School (VBS), members and friends arrived at the rear of the church’s campus to participate in our Annual Church-wide Fun Day Picnic! The DJ was playing our favorite Gospel tunes as he welcomed us to another Fun Day Picnic!

Registration began at 3:30 p.m.! As

everyone arrived, they were asked to stop by the Registration table so they could register for the games and events; pick up a name tag, and their Zion Hill wristband! There were three colors for the wristbands: purple for the Adult members, Orange for our Guests and Lime Green for the Kids. The wristband was a surprise keepsake for those attending the 2024 Annual Fun Day Picnic.

The Fun popped off at 4:00 p.m.! Most kids dressed in their swimming attire, headed towards the Giant Water Slide for their first splash of the day, returning again and again to cool off on such a hot day!

Kids and adults were very excited to see the Artic Swings and Turbo Tub Carnival Rides return this year! People stood in line to get as many rides as they could throughout the evening! The line didn’t

end until the rides were shut down!

Even though a full “Schedule of Events” was planned, printed and posted, almost everyone just sat around eating, talking and fellowshipping with family, friends and guests that they had met during Vacation Bible School!

“The Petting Zoo” was a big hit too!

You could feed, pet/or hold the chickens, ducks, goats, miniature pig or rabbits for as long as you desired. The Petting Zoo staff was supposed to leave at 6:00 p.m., but I observed the father and son playing catch football, much later. They finally joined in on the other festivities of the day offered by the Church!

The Concession Stand offered snowcones, cotton candy, and popcorn throughout the day. The funnel cake fries were the last of the fare offered that evening.

The Zion Hill Choo-Choo offered train rides during the picnic and were enjoyed by the young and old. There were bounce houses, an Obstacle course, Putt-Putt Golf, and a Game Truck too!

The Sand Art table allowed the kids the opportunity to use their creativity to create their own sand art in a bottle!

The clown stayed busy Face-painting and balloon-animal making for the kids.

Bid Whisk and Spade games were played under the deck. Hulu Hoops and horseback rides were also part of the entertainment! Also, there was volleyball and basketball going on in the gym for the teens! There was something for everyone to do, if they wanted to move from the seat!

Dinner time began at 5:00 p.m.! The DJ announced it was time to eat, Pastor Park-er led us in Grace and the lines formed immediately, because everyone was ready to eat! We had so much food that one plate would not do—because there was: hot fried fish and chicken tenders; hot dogs, hamburgers, turkey burgers, vegan burgers, potato salad, coleslaw, pasta salad, baked beans, corn on the cob, a vegetable medley, assorted chips, watermelon and ice cream! There was our famous Zion Hill Punch, assorted sodas, lemonade, water and Hugs for the kids that lasted all after-noon to quench our thirsts! The Culinary Ministry was on point as they served the delectable meal with a smile!

The Health Ministry Table was well-coordinated too, the table was fully staffed all evening-long with trained Professional medical personnel that volunteered to provide medical/or emergency care if needed.

About 7:00 p.m., the Food Truck pulled up; a line was formed as people began to place their order for Tacos and Nachos! The food was so good! The line ended just as the rides and other attractions began to shut down. We all grabbed our chairs and quickly moved about the parking lot searching for the perfect spot to view the fireworks show.

Looking at the top of the Parking Deck, a beautiful sign let us know that we were at

the “Zion Hill Annual Church-Wide Fun Day Picnic” and about 8:45 p.m., a loud boom and a bang signaled the beginning of the fireworks show! Bursts of vibrant colors soon filled the sky! Pop! Pop! Pop! went the fireworks, as the congregation looked on with eyes and mouths wide open with pure amazement! There was cheering, screaming and clapping! Pure Joy was felt by all who attended and were proud to have been a part of such another Fantastic Annual Church-Wide Fun Day Picnic!

So many of our guests were so surprised that all that they ate, received, and enjoyed was offered at “no costs” to them and the members! They were very thankful to have experienced Zion Hill’s Fun Day. Security was in Full force, and many said that it was safe environment for kids just to run and play and just have FUN! One of my VBS students said that she

had “so, much fun that she will come back again next year!” Some of the members remarked that “this was a great evening of Fun, Fellowship, Food, and Relaxation!”

As the crowd dispersed, I couldn’t help but reflect on the VBS Theme for this year: “A Building Boom in Fruitful City.”

The kids focused on three of the Fruits of the Spirit: Love, Joy and Kindness! Zion Hill is on this hill “Living to Love and Loving to Serve” trying to cause a Building Boom in God’s Kingdom by sharing Christ in this city called “South Fulton” and our commu-nity at large!

May the lessons that you learned in VBS; the Fun you had on Fun Day, and the fireworks “Shake It Up” something in your Life to cause some type of change/movement to do better during the remainder of 2024! n – Sis. Pauline Anderson

Spreading Love and Hospitality: Zion Hill Baptist Church Courtesy Guild Ministry

I

n today's fast-paced world, where self-centeredness can often overshadow kindness, the presence of a Courtesy Guild with Zion Hill Church stands out as a beacon of light. This essential ministry plays a vital role in fostering an atmosphere of love, hospitality, and inclusivity within our church community. In this article, we will explore the various functions and initiatives undertaken by our church's ministry, as well as its impact on both members and visitors alike.

Creating a Welcoming Atmosphere:

The ministry courtesy committee serves as the face of the church, ensuring that every person who enters our doors feels warmly welcomed and embraced. This committee strives to make each feel valued, understood, and loved as part of our congregation. By providing a warm smile, a listening ear, and a helping hand, the committee members make it their mission to create a positive and inclusive atmosphere that reflects God's love for all.

Greetings and Ushering:

One of the primary responsibilities of the Courtesy Guild Ministry is greeting and ushering members and visitors during church services. These dedicated individuals are present at the entrance of the church, ready to extend a warm greeting and assist anyone with any needs or inquiries they may have. Through their attentiveness, they ensure that everyone receives a personalized welcome, fostering a sense of belonging within the congregation.

Information and Assistance:

Whether it's directing newcomers to different facilities or providing information about various ministries and events, the Courtesy Guild serves as a valuable point of contact for all inquiries. Armed with a wealth of knowledge about the church

community, they are equipped to guide individuals to the right resources or connect them with others who share similar interests. Their role in addressing concerns, answering questions, and offering assistance helps to create a more engaging and supportive church environment.

Event Planning and Coordination:

The Courtesy Guilde plays a critical role in assisting other ministries with various church events. From fellowship meals and programs to outreach initiatives, these dedicated volunteers work behind the scenes to ensure the smooth execution of each endeavor. Their attention to detail, commitment to excellence, and willingness to go the extra mile often result in unforgettable experiences that bring our church community closer together.

Hospitality Ministry:

A vital aspect of the Courtesy Guild's work is coordinating hospitality throughout our church visitors and members. Helping with our Culinary Ministry by serving refresh-

ments for church functions, organizing meals for families in need, or catering to special requests during events, the compassionate individuals function as the church's hosts. Their dedication to service and commitment to meeting the needs of others exemplify the spirit of Christ's teachings, setting an example for the entire congregation to follow.

The Courtesy Guild is an indispensable asset to our church community. Through their unwavering dedication, welcoming demeanor, and servant's heart, they exemplify the love of Christ, fostering an environment of hospitality and inclusivity. As a united force, this ministry plays a vital role in making our church a place where individuals from all walks of life can find solace, acceptance, and spiritual nourishment. 2024 Rites of Passage Registration Information ABOUT ZHBC Rites of Passage Program: Established in 1994, The Zion Hill Baptist Church Rites of Passage Program helps to prepare youth for adulthood. The program is composed of two groups: “KENTAKE” for young females and “ADIGUN NKOSI” for young males. The mission of this ministry is to teach some of life’s essential, character-producing lessons in the African, African American and other cultural traditions.

Eligibility: The 13-week program is designed for teen girls and boys ages thirteen (13) to eighteen (18). Zion Hill youth as well as youth throughout the Atlanta metropolitan area are welcome to apply.

Cost: There is no cost for participation in the program.

Registration July 7 through July 28, 2024: The Rites of Passage program registration will begin July 7, 2024. Applications will be available in the Information Center and Church Office.

Registration spaces are limited. Applicants are strongly advised to thoroughly review the schedule requirements to ensure they will be able to meet the criteria for successful program completion. Participants who do not complete the required sessions may be dismissed from the program.

Registration Deadline Applications must be picked up, completed and submitted to the church office by 12:00 pm, Sunday, July 28, 2024. There will be NO exceptions.

Welcome to “Good Ground”

E

very day the Lord allows us to see is indeed a great day. June 30, 2024, was extra special as we celebrated and embraced 21 candidates for baptism. While baptism isn’t a foreign concept to many, understanding its significance is key. Baptism is an outward expression of wanting to join the fellowship with other believers.

The process consists of crossing your hands on your chest, being dipped or leaned back, water is applied to the body then you are brought back up and guided out the water.

Each step has a particular importance to help develop the overall meaning.

First, you cross your hands across your chest, this symbolizes the decision to die to yourself/flesh/worldly desires. John 12:25, CEB says, “Those who love their lives will lose them, and those who hate their lives in this world will keep them forever.” This scripture helps to deliver the message of dying to the ways of the world to follow Jesus Christ. Second, being dipped or leaning back, this symbolizes an

act of trusting what you feel but can’t see.

God is ALWAYS with us even during times it doesn’t “feel” like it. During this step, one has decided to trust those around them, when they can no longer see, to not let them fall. This concept is applicable to God as Deuteronomy 31:6, ESV says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” This scripture reminds us that no matter where we go or who’s around, God is ALWAYS there. Third, water is applied to the body then you are brought back up. The water symbolizes a cleansing, a renewing and a rebirth and being brought back up is the start of the change process. Psalm 51:10, ESV says “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” This scripture is a confession of change and asking God to give you what you need to serve Him and live righteously. Lastly, being embraced and guided. One is received afterwards by

those that are excited to welcome them into the body of believers in Christ Jesus.

The Lord instructs us to be witnesses and share the good news, so when others have listened and decide to join the body of believers, it’s truly a celebration. John 12:32, ESV says “And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”

It was joy to see the excitement from the children to the adults going through this process. Many family members, friends and church members were present to bear witness and encourage our new members. When the candidates returned, Minister Adina Martin welcomed the candidates into the fellowship with a powerful encouraging word. She stated they are on “good ground” at Zion Hill and to be open to learn about God and allow themselves to be rooted in God. Pastor Parker concluded baptism by representing the church body by offering of the “right hand of fellowship” to the candidates. n – Sis. Michelle Phalo

A Day of Prayer at Zion Hill

A

s incense of the burnt offer-ing was offered both morning and evening before the Lord on the altar in Exodus 29:39, Numbers 28:4, and by David in Psalms 141:1-4 requesting that God counted his prayers as incense and his raised hands as the “evening offering,” so did Pastor Aaron L. Parker lead Zion Hill’s congregation in prayers of incense before the Lord on Sunday, June 30, 2024. Morning service permeated with songs of petition led by Pastor Parker including the hymn and spiritual “Pass Me Not,” “Lord, Help Me to Hold Out,” as well as the song of response, Yolanda Adams’ “I Am Just a Prayer Away” heartfelt and passionate delivery by Minister Niomie Bren-Wilson to set the tone and tenor of prayer. “Our world is in trouble,” said Dr. Parker,”our world needs some more God in it so we come today to pray for the world.” He emphasized that the purpose for prayer on Sunday morning was to bring “cares, concerns, heartaches, pains” and to “seek recovery from conflict” and ask the Lord to “set justice, peace” and to seek the Lord God’s presence.

In doing so, Rev. Dr. Joyce Brown, Deacon Craig Hendricks, and Elder Joy Bates delivered three powerful prayers for the nation, for families, and for the oppressed.

Rev. Dr. Brown petitioned God for healing, peace, a clear path, strength and deliverance.

Zion Hill’s praise team continued the dialogue of prayer singing “Worth” to declare that God thought we were “worth saving” and “to die for” us so that we “can be free.” Dr. Parker shared with the congregation that the family was “God’s first institution” and families have “deep, abiding needs– physical, emotional and spiritual– spoken needs, unexpressed needs, secret pain, and quiet hurt.” Deacon Hendricks lifted 1 John 5: 14, 15, to share that we have confidence in knowing the assurance of our prayers. He prayed for mothers, fathers, children, healing, mending of relationships, reconciliation, wholeness, financial stability, and peace for families.

Elder Joy Bates’ tremendously passionate prayer for the oppressed began with her utterance of “Freedom!” She cried how God “carried our ancestors through centuries of oppression and injustice.”

Under the guidance and direction of Dr. Parker, elders, ministers, and the prayer ministry team anointed members of the congregation symbolically using oil as a sign of the protection of God and the commissioning of assignments for the Kingdom of God. “Empower us to dismantle systems of oppression” because God’s Word “opposes oppressive empires,” said Elder Bates. The clarion call of “We want freedom, justice, liberty, peace” and prayer for “those who would seek to oppress,” that God would create in them “clean hearts and heal them from bigotry, hatred, racism, greed, and their superiority complex” rang forth in the appeal for healing, freedom, and deliverance.

To answer “Why Do We Pray?” Dr. Parker noted that we do not inform, force, or change God’s mind with prayer. He said, “Praying makes you aware of the presence of God. It is through the realization of God’s presence that one realizes that he or she is “not alone, but God is with you.” With an illustration of a child in a dark room upon realizing the presence of a parent, likewise, “We roam around in the world in the dark, but when we call on God, we find out that we are not alone in the dark,” noted Dr. Parker. “That’s why we pray.” “Why do we anoint?” – Dr. Parker lifted and illustrated the Psalms 23:5-6

and Biblical examples of Samuel anointing Saul and David, Elijah anointing Elisha, and Jesus' declaration of Isaiah 61 that the Spirit of the Lord anointed Him to spread the good news. As the praise team melodiously ministered “You’ve Been So Good to Me,” Dr. Parker reiterated, “Anointing is not just for your protection; it’s also about your assignment. You don’t just come so that you can be blessed; you are anointed to do something–a charge to your life to go forth and do the will of the Lord in the world.”

Under the guidance and direction of Dr. Parker, elders, ministers, and the prayer ministry team anointed members of the congregation symbolically using oil as a sign of the protection of God and the commissioning of assignments for the Kingdom of God. May this day of prayer and anointing be sweet incense in the nostrils of our Heavenly Father! ■

Zion Hill Staff is Shakin’ It Up! Let’s congratulate our new staff members

Joining our Music Ministry team, Sister LaToya Brooks has filled our Orchestra/Instrumentalist Director position. Sis. Brooks will support the ministry goals of Zion Hill Baptist Church by developing a high-quality, spirited, inviting music ministry within and outside the congregation through the Orchestra/ Instrumentalists Ministry. With two decades of band and music leadership experience, Sister Brooks brings a wealth of talent and gifts to the Zion Hill staff. She currently serves as an Elementary Music Specialist for the Atlanta Public Schools System and a Clinician/Marching Band Technician with the Fayette County School System. Sister LaToya worships under the leadership of Bishop Dale C. Bronner, Pastor of Word of Faith Family Worship Cathedral. She is married to Brother Adam Brooks, who serves as a guest musician with the Instrumentalists, and they have three beautiful daughters: Aria, Skylar and Kai.

Zion Hill also welcomes Brother Quandrell Claybrooks to our Music Ministry as our new Generation 8 Choir Director. In support of the ministry goals of the church, Brother Claybrooks is also responsible for developing a high-quality, spirited, inviting music ministry within and outside the congregation through the Youth Choir, Generation 8. A Performing Artist, Educator and Entrepreneur, Bro. Claybrooks is wellequipped and pleased to utilize his God-given gifts for service at Zion Hill, his church home. As an awardwinning educator and Morehouse College Alum, Brother Quandrell also serves as the Director of Choral/ Theater Activities at Westlake High School. We enthusiastically welcome Brother Claybrooks to his new servant role at Zion Hill.
